Welcome to the latest episode of our podcast, where we delve into the fascinating story of Sampson, his convictions, and his struggles against God. Sampson, one of the most enigmatic figures in the Old Testament, was a judge of Israel who possessed immense physical strength, thanks to his long hair, which he had vowed never to cut. However, Sampson's strength was not matched by his moral character, and he often gave in to temptation and committed acts of violence and debauchery, much to the dismay of God and his followers.
Throughout the story of Sampson, we see him repeatedly disobeying God's commandments and indulging in sinful behavior, such as consorting with prostitutes and seeking revenge against his enemies. Despite being blessed with immense power, Sampson was unable to overcome his weaknesses and remained a flawed, deeply human character.
Our hosts, Jon Nate and Matt, go deep into the psychological complexities of Sampson's character, exploring the various factors that drove him to commit the acts he did. The Parable of the Good Samaritan
25 On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
26 “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?”
27 He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’[a]; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[b]”
28 “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.”
29 But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
30 In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii[c] and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’
36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”
37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”
Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

Like Abraham before him, Isaac sends Jacob to marry a woman from among his own people, who worships his God, instead of a local woman. Though Isaac had originally intended Abraham’s blessing for Esau, he now seems to be reconciled to the fact that it belongs to Jacob—Jacob will carry on Abraham’s and Isaac’s blessings of land and offspring. Esau, meanwhile, tries to do something that will gain his parents’ approval.

When Isaac is old and unable to see, he calls Esauto him. Isaac explains that he doesn’t know when he will die, so he wants Esau to hunt and prepare some game for him, just the way he likes it. Overhearing this, Rebekah tells Jacob to get two kids from the flock; she will prepare them for Isaac, and Isaac will then give Jacob his blessing. Jacob worries that if Isaac touches him, he will know that Jacob is not Esau—Esau is much hairier. So Rebekah covers Jacob with Esau’s garments and also places the kids’ skins on his hands. Then Jacob carries the prepared meal to Isaac.
Recall that earlier, Esau yielded his birthright to Isaac because he was hungry. Now Jacob (with his mother’s help) deceives his brother more cleverly. The story is filled with tension, as Rebekah outfits Jacob and hurriedly prepares Isaac’s meal while Esau is out in the fields. Blessings bestowed by a patriarch before his death were considered to have a shaping influence on sons’ lives, hence the high stakes of the moment
When Jacob comes in, he tells Isaac that he is Esau. Isaac wonders how the game was hunted and prepared so quickly, but Jacob claims that God granted him success. Then Isaac wants to feel his son to be sure of his identity. Touching Jacob’s skin-covered hands, Isaac satisfies himself that although the man sounds like Jacob, it is really Esau. He eats the meal Jacob has brought, then kisses Jacob and blesses him. The blessing includes the prayer that Jacob’s brothers will bow down to him.
While Genesis doesn’t pass judgment on characters’ behavior, Jacob deceives his father, and Isaac does appear to doubt whether this is really Esau. Again, tension mounts as Isaac makes up his mind and goes forward with the blessing. When he pronounces the blessing, it’s clear why Jacob wanted it so badly; Isaac’s prayer seems to assume that Esau is the chosen inheritor of Abraham’s blessings, not Jacob.

There is a famine in the land, so Isaac goes to King Abimelech of the Philistines in Gerar. The LORDwarns Isaac not to go to Egypt, but to settle in Gerar as an alien; God will be with him and bless him and his descendants here, fulfilling his oath to Abraham. So Isaac settles in Gerar, telling the local men that Rebekah is his sister, not his wife—like Abraham, he fears that he will be killed and Rebekah taken, because she is beautiful. One day, King Abimelech sees Isaac “caressing” Rebekah and realizes the truth. He warns his people that nobody may touch Rebekah.

Abram is now 99 years old and probably feeling a little impatient with Gods promises because God comes to him, again and renews their covenant together.
The name ‘El Shaddai’ (all powerful, all sufficient and giver of many blessings, rich and abundant) is used for the first time in scriptures.
Abram fell on his face (prostration) first to his knees and then pressing his forehead to the floor in reverence of El Shaddai.
Abraham gets his name changed—now it is ‘father many nations’—-what encouragement by the Lord!!
The covenant that El Shaddai had with Abraham is renewed and as a sign of it—all the males under Abrahams charge are to be circumcised.
God heard Abraham’s prayers about Ishmael (his son through Hagar) and He understands Abrahams concerns…we serve a loving and understanding God
God Promises to bear another son through Sarah (who also has her name changed) Abraham laughs but not cynically, maybe in shock and happiness. We can safely assume this because there is no rebuke like we see with Sarah.
Abraham humbles himself and submits to El Shaddai’s commands that VERY day. What a great example to us, don’t put off obeying our Almighty Savior. Obey today.

Context—Abraham is feeling pretty good, around 75 years old, and he just defeated 4 kings in the previous chapter.
Fear not Abram, I am your SHIELD; your reward shall be very GREAT. God promises HIS believers over and over that we should be afraid, He always has our backs (Romans 8:28) and this is the first time that He assures us of this, which is really a beautiful thing.
“Firsts”
- The first use of the phrase “the word of the Lord came” .This phrase is used over 100 times in the Old Testament.
- The first time God said “fear not” to anyone.
- The first time God is called a “shield” Frequently used in the Psalms to describe God’s protection for His people.
- The first time anyone is said to have “believed” in the Lord. The New Testament uses the word “believer” as a synonym for “Christian”
2 divine encounters with the Lord and Abram—during the night and at (sundown) I noted this because Abram probably wasn’t expecting this at all given the time.
How amazing that God comes EXACTLY when we need him! Abram was perhaps slipping off the straight and narrow and God in his infinite and mighty wisdom knew this and appeared before him, not once, but twice.
Abram really wanted an heir (Eliezer is his steward)
FAITH!!! God promised him already in 12:2 “I will make you a great nation”, but he probably was growing impatient especially in his old age.
Lift your eyes to the HEAVENS! Have faith and God will reward that and come EXACTLY when you need Him most.
