As she's getting out of the carriage one day, she sees a little dingy figure standing on the stairs, watching her. Her name is Becky and she is a servant of the house. Sara tries to befriend her, and Lavinia snottily points out that it's unseemly to hang out with servant girls.

Then, Lavinia, in true Mean Girls fashion, sniffs and huffs and says that they should call Sara "Your Royal Highness” when they find out her father is investing in a diamond mine.

We already don't like Lavinia, but it gets worse when she fights with Lottie, who is about a decade younger than she is. God, Lavinia, get a grip.

Ermengarde St. John is a very weird girl and has a decidedly weird name. She's not super smart, poor thing, and is blown away by Sara's ability to learn French.

Miss Minchin isn't very nice to Ermengarde, and because of this, Sara feels the need to reach out to her. Sara is super friendly and kind, so Ermengarde decides Sara will be her best friend (not weird at all).

Then, Sara meets Lottie, a little girl prone to tantrums. and constantly uses the fact that her mother is dead as a bargaining chip. Sara tells Lottie that she doesn’t have a mama either, so she will be Lottie’s school mama.

It's all rainy and gloomy—not exactly the most cheerful start to Mary's new life in Yorkshire. As they drive in a horse-drawn carriage, they pass a large, barren patch of ground, no trees, no birds, no nothin’. It’s the moor. Mary takes one look at this big, empty, bleak stretch of land and decides, "I don't like it".

Mary wakes up in her new home, the next morning, to the sound of Martha, the young housemaid that will be attending her. Martha is somewhat shocked that Mary can’t dress herself. So, Martha breaks down and gets her dressed, letting her know, all the while, that this is not a permanent state of affairs.

This book was written in 1915, when women were largely viewed as domestic non-beings whose primary roles were marriage and motherhood. Yet Charlotte Perkins Gilman wrote courageously about a world made better because women were in charge. It amazes me that 111 years later, we still haven’t fully caught up to her vision.

Welcome to Season 3. For the next few weeks, we will be presenting GRIMM WOMEN: And the End of Ever After. Original Grimm tales written by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. The Introduction, Afterwards, and Villain Voices written by Cathi Colas.

This still falls under the realm of Classics, but with a twist. I brought together some of the more memorable Grimmcesses and since I have always been on the other side of that coin, I wanted to hear from their antagonists. So, they have a say in this too.

I wasn’t sure, when I was putting this together, whether it was still relevant. But I was having an eye-opening conversation with my daughter the other day and I realized that even today, the damage done by Disney to little girls remains. Disney has way better role models now, but back in the day, not so much.

My daughter is getting married in June. She is planning an extravaganza for a wedding. Unfortunately for her, her parents come from plain stock, so the bill is being footed by my daughter and her fiancé, who don’t have this kind of cash.

I asked her why she was doing this and not putting the money down on say, a house? She told me that all her life she dreamed of the ‘fairytale’ wedding. She spent her childhood watching Disney princesses and she almost felt programmed to want this. Not only that, she felt she deserved it.

My daughter is truly a Disney princess come to life. She is beautiful, ethereal, but she is also 31. When do we release the litany of messages that bombard us with the belief that with beauty comes the promise we will have it all.

Did I do this to my daughter. Probably in the beginning. The collection of old VHS movies gathering dust in the attic is testament to my indoctrinating her. I didn’t mean to do this. I just wanted her to be quiet for an hour.

Anyway, this is my take on beauty, Grimmcesses, the voices of the villains, and the end of ever after.

In the present day, Sam finds that her boss trusts her enough to pull the case back into the department with Sam as the lead.

Alice, Robert, Ace, and Alice’s mom are all discussing the meeting once everyone has left only when Lily Thomas comes running into the theatre in her bathrobe screaming.

Back at the office, Sam checks in with members of her team and gets some less than welcome news from her boss.

Next week, Sam and her boyfriend Special Agent Terry Sloan visits Sam's mother, irrevocably damaged since the shooting at her son’s wedding. The visit reminds Sam she has many unresolved issues—and many questions—about the event that destroyed her family. Later that week, Sam and Gordy interview an art dealer who may have information on what Arley Fitchett was hunting.

Fitchett believes his lead on a fabled 18th century treasure puts him a position to bargain. In the following chapter, a young deputy with the Talbot County Maryland Sheriff’s Office is called to the scene of a grisly discovery, a garroted body washed on shore. Just two months into her new job, Sam is charged with finding out who murdered the popular guide and treasure hunter, Arley Fitchett. Once again, she is embroiled in a serial murder case. They meet for dinner and Wendy determines that although Steven looks like his photo, his interpersonal skills leave a lot to be desired. Things soon become uncomfortable for Wendy, and she ends their dinner date early. Steven’s reaction is highly inappropriate, and his response to her leaving is our first clue that he is more than just socially awkward. Wendy is distraught after the date, and his words, “You just wait,” continue to echo throughout the story.

As they meander further down the path they run into a beautiful cottage owned by Miss Lavender Lewis. Anne is intrigued when she finds out that Lavender used to be engaged to Paul Irving’s father.

Tune in today for the final episode of “The Wedding Crasher” by Nikki Stern. Today we tie up the lose ends. Jeff Simpson, Kaylee’s husband is out of town in a hot flash with his 2 sons, leaving Sam to deal with Kaylee’s remains. The Birdstown Sheriff’s office is in shock and dismay not knowing how the Wedding Crasher could be sitting amongst them not knowing who she really was. Sam tries to reach Dr. Sommers to no avail. Sam tells Terry she is leaving Tennessee and looking for a job closer to where her mother is in the nursing home. Terry and Sam finally decide the tension between them needs to be alleviated.

Anne finds Marilla with her head buried in her hands. Marilla just found out that if she doesn't give up all eye-straining work she'll be blind in six months. She doesn't see the point of not working if she's going to be alone. A few days later, Marilla decides to sell Green Gables.

Anne won't let her. She's made a decision of her own: to decline the scholarship. She's taken a teaching position a few towns over, so she can help Marilla. She'll drive to the school each day and board there on weeknights in the winter. Marilla knows she should argue but she's too grateful.

Season 2 starts on Monday, June 6, This season is dedicated to the Short Story. On Mondays we have “Madame Cruller’s Couch and Other Dark and Bizarre Tales” by Elizabeth Massie and on Wednesdays it will be “The Brothers Grimm Fairy Tales” by Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm. This ain’t for kids, those Grimm’s are hard core. I think you’re gonna like it.

Marilla and Matthew aren't doing so well. Matthews been having a lot of problems with his heart, and Marilla has pain behind her eyes. Also, the bank that's holding all their money is in trouble.

As winter turns to spring, fear the Wedding Crasher may return, frustrates Sam and her staff, as does the fruitless surveillance of Tommy Simpson. And Terry shows up with the last pieces of the puzzle, which point to a culprit much closer at hand than anyone suspected

Near the end of Anne's summer before Queen's, she's asked to speak in a big concert at the White Sands Hotel.

Diana spends time dressing her up beautifully, and she, Diana, and Jane ride to White Sands with a local boy at the wheel.

When they get there, Anne is escorted to the performers' dressing room, full of ladies in way fancier clothes. Then she's seated near a girl who makes fun of the local talent, calling everyone "rustic." Poor Anne feels like a joke.

This week we watch as Tommy Simpson, one of the prime suspects in the murders of Emily Upshaw and Tara Fence, has a meltdown and hints at an accomplice. Back in Tampa, Terry and his task force arrest William Sorrel, the top liaison for a Philadelphia mobster operating in Florida. It’s a major victory though the man dropped foreboding hints that point to Sam. Terry also goes back to the Wedding Crasher’s first victim and discovers something the investigators might have missed.

Anne is growing up and decides to spend her summer almost completely outdoors since she considers it her last summer of being a child, and Marilla lets her run free because a doctor told Marilla she's too pale and needs fresh air.

Marilla actually cries to Matthew about how much she'll miss Anne when she notices how tall and grown-up she looks. How things have changed since Anne first came to Avonlea

On a chilly winter’s day, Sam decides to visit the site of the first murder and focus on the meaning of one key element of the Wedding Crasher’s ritual—the white oak trees. Several pieces of the puzzle come together. Then, when a surprise witness comes to the office, Sam is ready to pull in a suspect she thinks is good for at least one of the murders.

Next week, one of Sam’s persons of interest has a meltdown following his interview with the sheriff, giving us a clue as to who might be responsible for Emily and Tara’s murders. Meanwhile, Terry investigates mob activity back in Florida and discovers a chilling connection to Sam’s past.

Aunt Josephine invites Anne and Diana to visit her and attend the Exhibition, which is like a giant fair.

Diana schemes to have her parents to ask Marilla so she'll let Anne go.

Marilla relents, just like she has recently relented on fashionable clothes. (Anne has a bunch of them now.)

The Exhibition is fun—Anne and Diana watch Avonlea folks win prizes for cooking and farming. They also watch a horse race and have their fortunes told.

They get to sleep in Aunt Josephine's spare room, but it's a disappointment compared to the majesty of spare rooms in Anne's imagination.

The next night, they see a singer perform opera, which makes Anne cry. Then they eat ice cream.

In the today's episode, Sam focuses on Brad Goodrich and discovers his connection with Bitsy Newsome may have been both personal and professional. But is he the Wedding Crasher? Meanwhile, Terry remains as connected to Sam’s investigation as he possibly can. But when questioned by his girlfriend Mercy, he has to ask himself is HIS interest simply professional or does he have something personal at stake?

Tune in today for Episode 14 of "The Wedding Crasher" by Nikki Stern. Tara Fence, the young deputy, is killed in what at first appears to be a single car accident. However, Sam finds more than a little out of place, including evidence the car was sabotaged. Even as she delivers the eulogy at Tara’s funeral several days later, she promises to catch whoever caused the death of the promising young woman.

Next week, we listen as the investigations into the three murders continue into the unhappy holiday season and Sam closes in on the most promising suspect yet.

As Matthew watches Anne with her friends one night, he notices that she seems different from the other girls but he can’t figure out why. After mulling it over her realizes she is dressed differently. It’s the puffed sleeves! He then decides that he is getting her a fashionable dress for Christmas. Also, in an effort to spice things up a bit, Anne and Diana start the Story Club.

The church also gets a new minister and that minister has a wife. Said wife takes over Anne's Sunday School Class and she lets them ask questions! What a concept! Marilla invites the Allans over for supper and tells Anne she can make the cake. Anne gets so excited, you don't want to know what happens to that cake.

Tune in today for Episode 11 of "The Wedding Crasher" by Nikki Stern. In today's episode Sam spots a suspicious figure in a hoodie. She and Terry give chase only to get shot at as the suspect escapes The unexpected gunplay in the mall parking lot infuriates the Nashville chief.

Terry is called back to his field office in Florida leaving Sam feeling as if she's spinning her wheels until the perfect suspect walks into the station.

Tune in today for Episode 10 of Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery. Diana uses the signal system she and Anne created, to get Anne to come over. When she meets up with her friend, Diana tells her she wants to take Anne to the Debating Club concert for her birthday. She invited Anne to stay overnight and said they can sleep in the spare room, which Anne considers a high honor.

However, Marilla said Anne can’t go (oh the injustice of it all)

Matthew thinks Marilla is being overly strict. His strategy for convincing her? He just kept saying "I think you ought to let Anne go" until Marilla could no longer stand it. The strategy works.

Sam attends Emily Upshaw’s funeral and finds herself eyeing a number of potential suspects. A tip from a Nashville PD contact sends them racing to a shopping mall to see if the target of a planned sting to catch a serial molester might be their killer. While they begin as observers, they become dangerously involved when Sam sees a shadowy figure in the surveillance camera.

One afternoon, Anne spies Diana outside beckoning to her. Anne rushes out, and Diana tells her she is still forbidden to play with Anne so she has come to say goodbye. The two have a sentimental, melodramatic parting. When Diana cries that she loves her bosom friend, Anne says, “Nobody ever has loved me since I can remember. Oh, this is . . . a ray of light which will forever shine on the darkness of a path severed from thee, Diana.” Anne asks for a lock of Diana’s black hair to keep as a memento. To combat her despair over losing Diana, Anne decides to return to school.

Later, Diana rushes into the house and cries that her three-year-old sister Minnie May is sick with the croup, and neither she nor the babysitter know what to do. Matthew quickly harnesses the horse and goes for the doctor, while Anne and Diana rush back to the Barry house, Orchard Slope. Having cared for three sets of twins at Mrs. Hammond’s home who all got croup regularly, Anne knows how to care for Minnie May. Matthew arrives with the doctor at three A.M., by which time Minnie May is sleeping peacefully.

Sam is back at her desk, trying to compare Emily Upshaw’s murder to Bitsy Newsome’s (“the same and not the same,” she thinks) when she gets a frantic call from her aunt. The gunman whose actions took the life of Sam’s father and brother and critically wounded her mother has been released from a psych ward after twenty-five years. Sam calms her aunt, but when she returns home late that night, someone takes a few shots at her, endangering her elderly landlady as well as Sam. The actions leave Sam not shaken but furious.

Though Anne has received little schooling prior to her arrival at Green Gables, she winds up being the smartest girl in class. Although she likes being intelligent, she would much rather be good looking. Diana tells Anne about the smartest boy in class, Gilbert Blythe, who is soooo handsome, Anne couldn’t give him the time of day. Later Marilla lets Anne invite Diana over for tea. Marilla said they could each have a small glass of cordial but Diana drinks 3. Yikes. Let’s see what happens

Today, we see that Emily Upshaw’s death brings an unprecedented level of national attention to Pickett County. To add to the pressure on the investigators, Emily’s grief-stricken and well-connected father reaches out to a family friend, the district’s congressman. His involvement may or may not be politically motivated, but his presence promises to make things difficult for Sam, Terry and their bosses.

Anne returns home one afternoon to tell Marilla about an upcoming Sunday school picnic. It’s too exciting for words and oh, and there's going to be ice cream there, which Anne's never had before. Marilla says Anne can go but when she realizes her amethyst brooch is missing, Anne may not be going anywhere for a long time.

Today we are introduced us to Emily Upshaw, the self-aware daughter of Tom Upshaw, a well-connected local builder. Like all teenagers, she has her moments of rebellion. Unfortunately, her actions have consequences for the entire family, as we learn in the next chapter. Meanwhile, Sam is pulled across county lines and into another homicide that may or may not be the responsibility of the serial killer she’s hunting.

Anne is going to Sunday School and Marilla made sure Anne had some clean, serviceable dresses. Anne leaves the house embarrassed by how plain they are and decides to accessorize. Even though Anne might've looked boho chic by today's standards, the Avonlea girls in her Sunday school class think she looks ridiculous (how rude). They have no ‘scope for imagination’.

When Anne returns home, she tells Marilla she didn't like Sunday school. Marilla is shocked. Then Anne goes into one of her speeches, telling Marilla all her thoughts about church and Sunday school.

Some of Anne's thoughts: Mr. Bell's opening prayer was too long, the minister's sermon was uninteresting because he doesn't have enough imagination.

Marilla secretly agrees with Anne but would never let her know.

Sam revisits Dr. Jayne Sommers, the psychiatrist attached to the Nashville police department, where she once served as a homicide detective. We learn that Summers may have her own set of problems involving a threatening outsider curious about Sam’s issues.

Later, Sam discovers yet another possible suspect when she joins a monthly poker game that includes several prominent local figures. Is this the break she’s been looking for?

So Mrs. Rachel Lynde arrives at Green Gables, and after describing her illness (grippe) to Marilla in great detail, she brings up Anne., and even before seeing her, Mrs. Lynde doesn't approve, reminding Marilla that she has no idea how to raise a child.
Mrs. Lynde tells Anne the Cuthberts couldn't have chosen her for her looks. She calls her skinny and homely (meaning ugly), points out her freckles and compares her hair color to carrots.
Anne doesn't take it lying down. She stomps her foot, tells Mrs. Lynde she hates her, calls her a rude, impolite, unfeeling woman, and asks her how she'd feel if someone told her she was fat, clumsy, and didn't have a spark of imagination.

Sam, along with a Nashville detective assigned to the Bitsy Newsome case, interviews Bitsy’s fiancé, a shrewd, self-possessed attorney who may have underlying rage issues. Interest in the case cools, leaving Sam alone with her nightmares and her suspicions that there might be more to Bitsy’s death. But what?

Marilla realizes that Anne does not know how to pray. At the asylum, she was taught that God is “infinite, eternal, and unchangeable,” a description she thought grand. She explains that she rejected God because Mrs. Thomas told her God gave her red hair on purpose.

Anne launches into the stories of her former "friends," Katie Maurice, a reflection in the glass in front of a book case, that she used to pretend was another girl, and her echo, who she pretended was a friend named Violetta. Exhausted, Marilla sends Anne to her room to finish learning the prayer.

Sam and Terry reunite, the first time in a brief fling several years earlier. Though the reunion may be awkward on one level, Sam is relieved to find their working rhythm is intact. They’ll need to have each other’s backs as they assemble a task force with representatives of myriad state agencies. That meeting is a cakewalk compared with their first encounter with a fearful public, a hungry press, and a couple of opportunistic politicians.

Along the way, he thinks about love past and present, but mostly about his obsession with bringing The Wedding Crasher to justice. Meanwhile, Sam and Abdi visit the shop selling vintage wedding dresses, where they meet the delightfully eccentric Hattie McCoy.

Marilla is shocked when a young girl shows up with Matthew. They were expecting a boy! Anne is devastated by the fact that she is once again "unwanted". The next day, Anne slowly begins to win over the reluctant Marilla, but she is still going to go to Mrs. Spencer's and try to rectify this mistake.

**Sam is back in her office, preparing to alert her staff about the newest victim. There is concern amongst the deputies, not just about the possible return of a serial killer, but also about the fact they may have to take a backseat to the FBI. Sam’s feelings on that subject are mixed.

Following a restless night punctuated by recurring nightmares, she returns to the office to work with her right-hand assistant, Abdi as they learn more about Bitsy Newsome, the latest victim of their elusive killer.**

Set in the late 19th century, this story is about the adventures of Anne Shirley, an 11-year-old orphan girl, who is sent to two middle-aged siblings, Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, who had originally intended to adopt a boy to help them on their farm in the fictional town of Avonlea in Prince Edward Island, Canada.
