Living in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation can easily get us down, where we can become constant complainers
-
But allowing that to happen will render us less effective
-
And as with Israel, "murmuring" can lead to our own downfall - 1Co 10:10-12
AS JESUS PUT IT, "FIRST REMOVE THE PLANK FROM YOUR OWN EYE" - Mt 7:1-6 1. This passage, often misused to prevent any proper judging, is emphasizing the importance of "getting your own act together first"
- Notice, that once you have "removed the plank", you can then (and should) be used to "remove the speck" in another's eye
INTRODUCTION 1. A grave concern to any thoughtful Christian is how quickly our society is changing, and clearly for the worse 2. As some theologians would describe it, we now live in a "post-Christian culture" a. This simply means that the old norms once held true are no longer accepted by the majority b. For example, people as a majority once believed in God, that the Bible was the Word of God, and that Jesus was the Son of God; but such is no longer the case c. The majority no longer accepts certain basic principles of morality taught in both the Old and New Testament, even ridiculing those people who do as "old-fashioned" and "un-enlightened"
- About 750 B.C., an obscure farmer and shepherd was called by God to be a prophet... a. The man's name was Amos b. His mission: to warn Israel of God's coming judgment if they did not repent! 2. Sadly, the nation did not heed the call to repent... a. As a result, they were led into Assyrian captivity b. Part of Amos' prophecy that was fulfilled concerned an unusual famine that would come upon the people: A FAMINE FOR THE WORD OF GOD! - cf. Am 8:11-14
MARY WAS DISCIPLINED...
- She sat at Jesus feet and heard His word - Lk 10:39 a. Sitting at His feet was the ancient posture of disciples or learners - cf. Ac 22:3 b. It indicates she was His disciple, she wanted to learn from Him c. She was more concerned about being a good disciple, than a good hostess 2. She chose the one thing needed - Lk 10:42 a. In the end, there is one thing that is really necessary b. That would be seeking God's kingdom and righteousness - Mt 6:33; cf. 1Ti 4:8
THE EXAMPLE OF MARTHA AND MARY
A. MARTHA WAS DISTRACTED... 1. She had invited Jesus to her house - Lk 10:38 a. That it was her house leads most to think she was the eldest, head of the household b. Her hospitality is certainly commendable, a noble trait - cf. Isa 58:7; He 13:2 2. She became distracted by much serving - Lk 10:40 a. The Son of God, the Messiah, had come to her house - what an honor! b. There were likely others beside Jesus: His disciples, her family, neighbors c. She naturally wanted her sister Mary to help - Lk 10:40 3. She began to worry and be troubled by many things - Lk 10:41 a. These were not things that were wrong in of themselves b. But they took priority when they should not have c. Which caused anxiety of mind and distress of spirit! -- Martha allowed that which is good get in the way of that which is better!
- As Christians, we have many responsibilities that are proper... a. As parents, spouses, or children - cf. 1Ti 5:8; Col 3:18-21 b. As employees, or employers - cf. Col 3:22-4:1 2. Yet sometimes what is good can get in the way of what is better... a. When we fail to properly prioritize our activities b. Allowing ourselves to be distracted by what is good, missing out on what is better [A good illustration of this is seen in the story of Martha and Mary, two sisters who along with their brother Lazarus were loved by Jesus (cf. Jn 11:5). Turning to our text (Lk 10:38-42), let's examine...]
. HAGGAI'S APPLICATION TO THE CHURCH
A. WE FACE A SIMILAR TASK...
- Not the building of a physical structure
a. For God does not dwell in temples made with hands - Ac 17:24
b. The temple of God is now the church - cf. 1Co 1:2; 3:16-17
- Though a spiritual structure, God's temple is still undergoing construction a. The foundation is the work of Jesus, apostles and prophets - Ep 2:19-22 b. It grows as people are converted by the preaching of the gospel - 1Co 3:5-9
c. It grows internally as those converted do their part - Ep 4: 15-16-- So we have a similar task to "Build the temple!" (a never- ending task)
II. HAGGAI'S APPLICATION TO THE CHURCH
A. WE FACE A SIMILAR TASK...

THE MESSAGE OF HAGGAI...

"Is it time to dwell in paneled homes while the temple lies in ruins?" - Hag 1:4

The Lord's challenge: "Consider your ways!" - Hag 1:5
a. Things had not been going well - Hag 1:6
b. They should have been building the temple - Hag 1:7-8
- Because they had put building their homes before the Lord's house...
a. They prospered little; what little they had the Lord blew away - Hag 1:9
b. The Lord even called for a drought in judgment upon them - Hag 1:10-11
INTRODUCTION 1. About 600 years before Christ, Judah was taken captive to Babylon... a. Jerusalem with its temple was plundered and burned b. Seventy years later, the Jews were allowed to return 2. It was the Lord's intention that the Jews rebuild the temple... a. He stirred up Cyrus of Persia to let them do this - Ezr 1:1-5 b. But once the people returned to Jerusalem, other things began to take precedence 3. God then sent Haggai to the Jews with a simple message... a. The message was "Build the temple!" b. The message has an application for the church today [Turning in our Bib
II. THE "OTHERS FIRST" PRINCIPLE
A. AS EXEMPLIFIED BY CHRIST...

He came to this earth because He put others first - 2Co 8:9; Mt 20:28
-
We are called upon to adorn the same mind or attitude - Php 2: 3-8
a. To do nothing through selfish ambition or conceit
b. To esteem others better than ourselves
c. To look out for the interests of others
-- Jesus exemplified the principle of "others first" that He desires in us as well
IN OUR FAMILIAR RELATIONSHIPS...

Christians have duties to members of their physical families - Col 3:18-21; Ep 5:22,25,33
-

- As Jesus went about His earthly ministry, people either wanted to follow Him, or were invited by Him; yet some desired to do so on their own terms - Lk 9:57-62 a. "Lord, let me first go and bury my father." b. "Lord, I will follow you, but let me first go and bid them farewell who are at my house." 2. This "me first" mentality was fundamentally opposed to Jesus' concept of following Him... a. He demanded that one "deny himself" to follow Him - Lk 9:23 b. He required that one "hate...his own life also" - Lk 14:26

WHY WE ALL NEED TO BE PERSONAL WORKERS
A. TO FULFILL THE COMMAND OF CHRIST...

B. TO SHOW OUR LOVE FOR OTHERS...

FOR SOME, IT IS A LACK OF FOCUS...
- Distracted by things of the world
a. Stifling our efforts to bear fruit - cf. Lk 8:14
c. Making one unprepared for the day of the Lord - Lk 21:34
- Trying to do the impossible
a. Such as serving two masters - Lk 16:13
b. Such as loving both the Father and the world - 1Jn 2:15-17
- I suspect this is the major reason why people don't evangelize today
-- Are we willing to seek first the kingdom of God, making its growth our priority? [Whatever the reason for "The Greatest Need" not being met, there is no excuse. To encourage us to meet this need, consider some reasons...]
FOR SOME, IT IS A LACK OF FAITH...
- Who don't believe that God's Word is true
a. When it describes the sinful condition of the world - Ro 3:23
b. When it describes the terrible consequences of sin - Ro 6:23; Re 21:8
- Who don't believe in the ability of God Himself
a. To give them the strength to do God's will - Php 4:13
b. To give them the wisdom to teach His Word - Jm 1:5
c. To give them the courage to share His Will - 2Ti 1:7-8
-- Are we willing to have the faith to trust in God, that others might be saved?
C. FOR SOME, IT IS A LACK OF COURAGE...
- There is a fear of being:
a. Rejected by loved ones
b. Ridiculed by friends and strangers
c. Reviled by enemies of Christ
- Yet there is no need to fear such things
a. People are not rejecting us, but Christ
b. If reviled for the name of Christ, we are blessed - Mt 5: 11-12; 1Pe 4:14-16
c. If we are servants of Christ, we seek to please God, not men - Ga 1:10--
Are we willing to overcome our fears, to save those who are lost?
FOR SOME, IT IS A LACK OF CONCERN...

Not concerned for the Lord's cause, who came to seek and save - Lk 19:10
-
Not concerned for those lost and dying in sin, unlike Paul - cf. Ro 10:1
-
Not concerned for their own welfare, endangered by failing to bear fruit - Jn 15:1-2
-- Have we become so hardened, that we no longer care?
B. FOR SOME, IT IS A LACK OF KNOWLEDGE...
- Lacking knowledge of God's Word
a. Perhaps unaware that Jesus calls us to this mission - Mt 28:19;Mk 16;15; 1Pe 2:9
b. Perhaps needing to be taught again so we may teach others - He 5:12
Many are the needs of our day...
a. The need for peace in war-torn areas around the world
b. The need for food and clothing in poverty stricken countries
c. The need for loving families, civil rights, good paying jobs, etc.
-- These needs are certainly noble and very important
- Yet I suggest that the greatest need for our world is evangelism...
a. Sharing the gospel with every person - Mk 16:15
b. Preaching the word everywhere - Ac 8:5
-- A need that was met aggressively in the first century AD - Col 1:23
a. He is now both Lord and Christ - Ac 2:33-36
b. He is head over all things - Ep 1:20-23
- Christ is coming again
a. As promised when He ascended to heaven - Ac 1:9-11
b. Coming to offer both rest and tribulation - 2Th 1:7-10
-- He who died for us arose and ascended to reign and will return in judgment!
[Whether we are prepared for His coming depends upon our obedience to the gospel (cf. 2Th 1:8).
In "The Great Commission According To Mark", it is clear the gospel of Christ contains...]
a. Also fundamental to the gospel Paul preached - 1Co 15:4
b. As proclaimed by Peter in the first gospel sermon - Ac 2: 22-32
- Chris is exalted as King and Savior
a. He is now both Lord and Christ - Ac 2:33-36

FACTS TO BELIEVE
A. CHRIST WAS CRUCIFIED FOR OUR SINS...

This is likely the main point Jesus had in mind when He said "Preach the gospel..."

It was fundamental to the gospel Paul preached - 1Co 15:1-3

Why did Jesus die for our sins?
a. Because we are all sinners! - Ro 3:23
b. Because the wages of sin is death! - Ro 6:23
-- In love God offers His Son as a "propitiation" (sacrifice) for our sins! - 1Jn 4:9-10
Commission," notice the main thought of Jesus' command...
a. "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature" - Mk 16:15-16
b. Jesus wanted every person in the world to hear the gospel (good news)
- Have you heard the gospel of Jesus Christ...?
a. You have likely hear some part of the gospel
b. You might even have responded in some fashion to it
OBEDIENCE...

This brings us back to the very definition of discipleship

For Jesus clearly states:
a. We are to be taught (that is, to be learners)
b. We are to observe (that is, to be adherents or doers)
- In this way we embark on a life devoted to learning and doing all that Jesus commanded
a. We are to continue steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine - Ac 2:42
b. We are to imitate them, even as they imitated Christ - 1Co 11:1
What is baptism?
a. It is an act of submission which must be preceded by faith in Jesus and repentance for our sins - Ac 2:36-38; 8:36-37
b. It is also an act of submission which involves a burial in water, in which one then rises to walk in newness of life through the power of God - Ac 8:38; Ro 6:3-4; Col 2:12
- When done according to the Word of God, baptism then becomes an act of faith on our part which results in a wonderful working of God in our lives!
a. Our sins are washed away by the blood of Jesus - Ac 22:16; Ep 5:25-27
b. We are regenerated and renewed by the Spirit of God- Tit 3: 5-6
THE MARKS OF A DISCIPLE...
- One who abides in the words of Jesus - Jn 8:31
a. This would imply being a diligent student of the teachings of Christ
b. It also requires one to be a doer of the Word - Mt 7:21-27; Jm 1:21-25
- One who loves the brethren - Jn 13:34-35
With a love that is visible to the world ("by this all will know")
c. Made possible when we have been born again - 1Pe 1:22-23
- One who bears much fruit - Jn 15:8
a. Notice the word "much" (also found in verse 5)
b. Jesus is not talking about an occasional good deed c. But a lifestyle which prompts people to glorify God! - Mt 5:16
-- To be a disciple of Jesus means more that just a casual church member; it requires commitment to the teachings of Christ, the love of brethren, and bearing fruit

GOD'S WORD SAVES US BY KEEPING US SAVED - Ac 20:29-32
- Paul frequently spoke of this value of God's Word (especially of the Old Testament)
a. To the Corinthians - 1Co 10:11-12
b. To Timothy - 2Ti 3:14-17
- It is the lack of God's Word which has always destroyed the people of God - Hos 4:6
To help motivate us all in this regard, I wish to point out WHY it is so important to develop the habit of daily Bible reading...]
I. BECAUSE OF THE POWER OF GOD'S WORD TO SAVE - Jm 1:21
A. GOD'S WORD SAVES US BY PRODUCING FAITH - Ro 10:17

Without faith it is impossible to please God - He 11:6
-
Without faith in Jesus we cannot be saved - Jn 8:24
-
The Word Of God was written to produce such saving faith - Jn 20:30-31
D. PREACHERS FULFILLING THEIR DUTY TO THE WORD...
-
Preachers are to give heed to the Word, and to preach the Word - 1Ti 4:16; 2Ti 4:1-5
-
We should expect preachers to be "men of the Book"
a. Preaching and teaching the Word of God, providing exposition of the Scriptures
b. Not entertaining us with "pop theology" and "pop psychology"
-- Are you willing to require that preachers proclaim the Word to stamp out "Biblical Illiteracy"...?CONCLUSION

The faithful Christian realizes the value of mutual edification - He 3:12-14; 10:24-25
-
Churches often provide the opportunity for Christians to study together
a. In their Bible classes on the Lord's day, during the week, and in their homes
b. Where they can benefit from the knowledge of other Bible students
-- Are you willing to participate in such activities to stamp out "Biblical Illiteracy"...?
A. DAILY DEVOTIONAL BIBLE READING IN PRIVATE...

The truly blessed person feeds upon the Word of God daily - Psa 1:1-3; 119:97-98
-
A systematic practice of prayerful Bible reading as part of a daily devotional...
a. Will bring a person closer to God
b. Will gradually increase one's understanding of the Word of
IT'S EFFECT ON COMMUNITIES...
- Our standards of morality are skewed, where good is evil and evil is good - cf. Isa 5:20
a. We slaughter the innocent (abortion), sparing the guilty (no capital punishment)
b. We reward the wicked (movie stars, entertainers), depriving the good (teachers, etc.)
c. Divorce is made easy, adultery looked upon lightly, fornication "an affair, a relationship", homosexuality an alternative lifestyle
IT'S EFFECTS ON CHURCHES
Churches languish for lack of teachers; teachers are few for lack of knowledge - He 5:12
- Churches are led astray by false teachers and false doctrine, for how can the ignorant know what is false? - cf. 2Pe 2:1-3
-- How many churches are "dying on the vine", or into wholesale apostasy because their members cannot discern between truth and error...?
C. ITS EFFECT ON COMMUNITIES...
- Our standards of morality are skewed, where good is evil and evil is good - cf. Isa 5:20
a. We slaughter the innocent (abortion), sparing the guilty (no capital punishment)
- A growing problem is one of "Biblical Illiteracy"...
a. Not just by those in the world
b. Also in the church
-- "Americans revere the Bible - but, by and large, they don't read it. And because they don't read it, they have become a nation of biblical illiterates."
-
If we engage in activities without success, discouragement can be the result
-
Failure to succeed has led many to lose interest in various ventures
PARTICIPATION INCREASES INTEREST...
- This is true in many things
a. Sports - the difference between participants and spectators
b. Hobbies - fishing, birding, woodworking, sewing, etc.
- The more you participate, the more you want to participate
a. Sitting on the bench is no fun
b. Having an opportunity to participate just makes you want to do more
OUR SPIRITUAL ENVIRONMENT
A. THE ROLE OF A SPIRITUAL ENVIRONMENT FOR A NEW CHRISTIAN...

It plays a large part in his or her spiritual growth
-
A lukewarm or cold church environment can be devastating to the growth of a new believer
-
It can hinder or hurt the efforts of the faithful few trying to nurture new Christians
TEACHING OF GOD'S WORD IS REQUIRED...
-
As Paul instructed Timothy - 2Ti 2:2
-
Accompanied by our example (which we saw earlier in 'life transference')
-
Yet it is the Word which ultimately produces spiritual growth and change - 1Pe 1:23; 2:2
DEVELOPING DISCIPLES CAN BE A LENGTHY PROCESS...
-
The illustration of 'spiritual multiplication' in our previous study revealed that it takes nearly six years for noticeable growth to occur
-
Even Jesus spent three years in developing His disciples
-
Paul was in relative obscurity for ten years before he began his missionary journeys
IT IS TEMPTING TO WORK WITH TOO MANY AT ONE TIME...
-
Because of what others may expect of us ("You should not be working with just a select few.")
-
Because of what may be our own vain glory ("Numbers impress brethren more than quality, so I better work with many.")
PERSONAL FOLLOW-UP IS TIME-CONSUMING...
-
The needs of a new believer are often similar to that of a baby (feeding, bonding, protecting)
-
When life's busy schedule presses down, priorities will have to be made
-
Only the truly committed person will spend the time necessary to follow-up
-
Paul illustrates the kind of commitment needed - Ac 20:20,31; 1Th 2:9-12
LIFE TRANSFERENCE"...
-
Life transference - the transferring of things in your life to the life of the new Christian
-
In other words, the sharing of a lifestyle with the new believer 3. Such as Paul did with the Thessalonians - 1Th 2:8
B. OUR WALK WITH THE LORD MUST BE WORTHY OF IMITATION...
-
Otherwise, the new believer is not likely to take us seriously
-
Consider the example of Paul
a. In his conduct with the Thessalonians - 1Th 2:10
b. So he write as he did to the Philippians - Php 4:9
- We should not view Paul as an exception; all mature Christians are to worthy of imitation - cf. Php 3:17
SEEN WHEN ONE GRASPS 'THE VISION OF MULTIPLICATION'.... 1. Suppose you develop just one truly 'multiplying Christian' each year... a. Not an unreasonable goal b. For some that may not seem like much 2. If each year those 'multiplying Christian' developed one more 'multiplying Christian'... a. In two years there would be 4 b. In five years there would be 32 c. In ten years there would be 1,024 d. In twenty years there would be 1,048,576 e. In thirty-three years there would be 8,589,934,592 3. If you simply baptized 1,000 a year, in thirty-three years

Growth in the early church was described as multiplying - Ac 6:7; 9:31; 12:24

Contrast 'spiritual multiplication' with 'spiritual addition'
a. Spiritual addition - involves leading people to Christ, but that is all
b. Spiritual multiplication - involves leading people to Christ, then developing them until they are leading others to Christ
- 'Spiritual multiplication' involves four stages:
a. Evangelizing - teaching others the gospel of Christ - Mt 28:19
b. Follow-up - teaching them to observe all that Christ commanded - Mt 28:20
c. Reproducing - when they in turn begin to teach others - cf. 2Ti 2:2
d. Multiplying - what finally occurs when those taught in turn follow-up and make disciples who then teach others -
- Without 'follow-up', spiritual multiplication does not happen!
POTENTIAL FOR CHANGE IN A NEW CHRISTIAN...
-
A new convert has just expressed godly sorrow and repentance - 2Co 7:10
-
The desire to change and do what is right is at a peak - e.g., Ac 16:15
-
Given proper direction at this time, much progress can be accomplished - 2Co 7:11
-
Yet if the desire to change is not cultivated, discouragement and apathy can develop -- Thus the need to encourage the transformation process for the new Christian
UTILIZING A THREEFOLD APPROACH..
. 1. Group follow-up: nurturing the believer through the local church - He 10:25
-
Personal study: activities in which the new Christian engages on his own - 1Ti 4:13-16
-
Personal follow-up: one-to-one relationship with a mature believer to aid and inspire the new Christian's growth - e.g., Barnabas and Mark, Paul and Timothy
a. This work is best done by members serving as mentors and role models b. It should also be done with discretion (e.g., women following up with women)

CHARACTERISTICS OF "WALKING AS WISE"... (15-17)
- Doing so with great care - Ep 5:15
We are not to have fellowship with "unfruitful works of darkness" - Ep 5:11; e.g., fornication, uncleanness, covetousness, Ep 5:3-4
- Instead, our task is to "expose" them - Ep 5:11b-13
a. Things that we must "expose" are often so disgraceful, it is shameful to speak of them
b. But by "walking in the light" ourselves, we can through example and word expose by contrast these "works of darkness"
Walk In Love", with a love that is sacrificial and free from any hint of personal gain (either sexual or monetary)...that is the kind of "walk" worthy of our calling as "saints"
. Our "walk" also bears the responsibility of being a positive influence in the world in which we live, and this Paul discusses as we now consider our need to..

Paul has made it clear that it involves both putting off and putting on the new man. Walking in Truth and Holiness is not just a bunch of Thou Shalt Not's, but there are also some Thou Shalt's. As we look at the Application of how to walk in Truth and Holiness.

NO LONGER WALK LIKE THE REST OF THE GENTILES... (17-19)

c. Because of such ignorance they are "alienated from the life of God"

II. THE "WEAPONS" OF THIS WARFAREA. WHAT THEY ARE NOT: "CARNAL" OR "FLESHLY" (4) 1. E.g., weapons that may be used "AGAINST" the flesh... a. Such as the sword, gun, bomb, etc. b. These weapons may take "people" captive, but not necessarily their "thoughts"! c. Their "bodies" may be enslaved, but not their "minds" -- This was the flaw inherent in the Crusades 2. E.g., weapons that are "OF" the flesh... a. E.g., hatred, contentions, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions b. Such emotions are "works of the flesh" and are referred to in Ga 5:19-21 c. Unfortunately, these "works of the flesh" are often used as "weapons" to win arguments 1) At best all they can do is silence the opposition (through intimidation) 2) But at what cost? a) The opposition is not saved (which should be our goal) b) And the Christian who uses such "weapons" falls under the condemnation of Ga 5:21 -- So our weapons are not to be "carnal", either against the flesh or of the flesh

For Paul is defending his apostleship and ministry against false teachers 2. This "war" is one which involves: a. "arguments" b. "knowledge" c. "thoughts" -- Such is the "field of battle" in this war 3. This is a war that is fought whenever we try to... a. Lead a brother out of error b. Convert someone to Christ 4. The "objective" in this war as described by Paul: a. To defeat any argument or position which is "against the knowledge of God" (what He has revealed) - 2Co 10:5a b. To bring a person who has held such thoughts... 1) "into the captivity to the obedience of Christ" - 2 Co 10:5b 2) I.e., to become a "servant of Christ" [Such is the "warfare" of this passage. You might not have thought of it in this way, but every time we are trying to teach someone we are engaged in a "battle" for Christ! How are we to "fight" this war?]

Weapons Mighty In God (10:3-5)
INTRODUCTION

In our text, Paul writes of a "war" in which Christians are engaged... a. A war where weapons are used that are "mighty in God" b. A war that has as its objective to: 1) "pull down" 2) "cast down" 3) "bring into captivity"

Exactly what is this "war"? What "weapons" do we use?
-
Understanding the answers to these questions can help us be more useful and productive "soldiers" in the "army" of God
When we die, our membership in a local congregation ends. When Stephen died, he was no longer a member of the Jerusalem church.
But our membership in the universal church continues on after death
Local churches can easily be divided over doctrine or personalities. Such was the case with the church of Corinth.
While we can't divide the Universal Church, we can be responsible for dividing local churches
A local church when scripturally organized will have bishops and deacons. These bishops were also called elders and pastor, whose role was to oversee and feed the local congregation.
The only role or position ever given men over the universal church on earth was the apostles and they were not replaced when they died
One can be saved and not belong to a local church. Such was the case of the Enuch immediately following his conversion, and of Paul when he was in transit between Antioch and Jerusalem.
However, this should be temporary, because one should join himself/herself to a local church to grow spiritually. In the universal church, it is impossible to be saved and not belong to the kingdo
since enrollment occurs through human judgment, fallible decisions can be made. A local church may therefore have some who are Christians in name only. Hypocrites may become members of a local church, but they don't sneak by the Lord to become members of the universal church
Whether we are accepted into the local churches a decision made by the leaders or members of that church.
Sometimes people are rejected when they should be received. Other times they are accepted when they should be removed.
Evil men may succeed in kicking one out of a local church, but only the Lord determines who stays in the universal church
As the gospel spreads and people respond to it, those in a particular area start a local church when they agree to work together as one. Whereas the church universal began in Jerusalem on Pentecost, local churches have begun at different places and different times. When one wishes to become an accepted member of the local church, they must join themselves to that church. Whereas one is added by The Lord himself to the universal church, we can seek to join a local congregation ( if its members are willing to accept us)
A local church is made up of Christians in one geographical area. In contrast the universal church is made up of Christians everywhere
The church universal is made up of the saved, both living and dead. When one dies, the are still with Christ
Local churches can have their candlestick removed. We need to make sure we are remaining faithful to be in it. Thus there always will and is, one body. Death cannot prevail against it . It is a kingdom that will last forever. The church universal is made up of the saved, both living and dead. When one dies, they are still with Christ
The church universal does have organization. What organization exists is spiritual in nature. CHRIST is the cornerstone, together with His apostles and prophets as the foundation.
All Christians are "living stones" built upon that foundation, but there is no earthly headquarters for the churc
With more tha 38,000 denominations existing, i would like for us to examine challenges we face today. Although there are many, we will not examine every challenge, but a few of the more common ones faced by many churches of Christ. It might be helpful if we first carefully distinguish between the universal and the local church as revealed in the Bible
Thechurch in the first century often experienced grave challenges. Such as, persecution, false teachers, and Apostasy.
Today we see similar challenges confronting the church...false teachers leading many astray. Churches apostatizing, resulting in new religious organizations.
In this series we will examine the challenges we face today. But first, it may be helpful to distinguish between the universal church and the local church as revealed in the Bible
Such attitudes are necessary, are we will not be able with one mind and one mouth to glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ
In the scriptures, Paul cautions us about improper use of our liberty in Christ. It is true that we must stand fast in our liberty and not be entangled again with the yoke of bondage.
We should use our liberty as an opportunity to serve one another. Otherwise, abuse of our liberty gives the flesh the opportunity to destroy one another
It is important to point out those attitudes we should not have. Possessing attitudes will destroy unity in the Body of Christ. We must rid ourselves of these attitudes if we plan on growing the Kingdom of God.
We are aware of our own defects, but we do not have the same clear view of the defects of others. Therefore, we must strive to work on our own hearts and faults, then we could help others and work in unity
As we all know in order to do the work of God, we must have the right attitude. Paul focused his attention on developing attitudes which increase the likelihood of overcoming differences so that unity might prevail.
Displaying these virtues does not come naturally nor easy, nor does maintaining unity
As we take a look at these attitudes as taught by Paul to the church at Ephesus and the church at Philippi. We will learn bit by the fruit of the spirit that we must attain in order to carry out the Will of God. If we are going to reach others we must carry the fruit of the spirit
cnditions today are not really all that much different; where division exists, carnality (or spiritual immaturity) is often a major cause of the problem. This is not to say that there are never any substantive issues at stake when division occurs. But any hope for resolving differences over such issues is stifled when the parties involved are filled with envy and strife
Every denomination today began as a result of division. Religious division normally finds its origin with brethren in the local congregation unable to resolve their differences
The challenge of following Jesus without denominationalism to a great extent revolves around the problem of religious division that begins in the local church.
There are many things on the mind of humans, however, they refuse to speak on it. This broadcast is for the purpose of taliking about things you've been thinking in silent, but want to mae audible.
What is it that you need to talk about to make your life better, even stressless. Well, the door is opened for you in this broadcast. Just Say It!
The Lord has given each and every one of His children an assignment in which He expects us to fulfill. We are to be proclaimers of His Word to a lost nation. The Lord expects us to follow His commands and guidelines when it comes to His Kingdom. However, it's up to us if we are going to obey His Word and complete the task given. God is not going to make us do our assignments, but He has ways of pushing us towards them. Make the right choice and do what's expected of you.
The work of benevolence, while important, appears to take a back seat to the primary work of the church, which was edification. But there is another work of the church, which is the natural outgrowth of equipping the saints for ministry
Individual Christians are expected to be good Samaritans and help those in the world as they have the opportunity and ability.
this implies that the local church was not intended to be a social agency to cure all the social ills in the world. It has neither the organization nor resources to do so
When one looks at how the local churches organized, what it is called to do in worship, and the purpose of the gifts that Christ gave His church, I believe it is fair to say that the primary work of the local church is edification.
i.e the spiritual development of its members! But clearly there is more. The work of the local church certainly includes...Benevolence.

its work; what work it does is done as individuals who live and
work in the world
b. The church local has organization as we have seen, and as such is
capable of some sort of corporate (as opposed to individual) work

revealed about the organization and worship of the church...
a. For the Lord organized His church to effectively carry out its
work
b. And the worship ordained would certainly complement the church in

Many times people put on a show and call it worship, however, God isn't impressed with your run, dance, shout, but God is impressed by your Walk, your Worship, because if you worship Him, it must be in spirit and in truth. If we must suffer, make it worthwhile. Make sure it's not for the reasons Peter listed, such as, murder, theif, an evildoer, or for what often brings unnecessary suffering to the church: as a busybody in other people's matter. Make sure your suffering is because we areChristians.
As someone has said, "First come the cross, then comes the crown." So don't be surprised if you find yourself facing ridicule, ostracism, even physical persecution for the cause of Christ
Continuing in this lesson of persevering through our persecutions will help us understand how to move forward through the trials we face. No one said the road would be easy, but with God we can accomplish anything and finish strong
In this lesson Peter continues to discuss persecution. In the earlier chapter Peter deals with preparing for persecution 1Peter 3:13-18. In this setting he takes a quick slant that relates to persevering.
While we might not ever endure "physical" persecution, it is unlikely that we will escape occasional "verbal" or "social" persecution.
Therefore, this lesson can be of great benefit to help us persevere in such circumstances
It is true that God want us to prosper as our soul prosper. However, we can live beyond our means trying to impress others. Only to finds ourselves in a financial bind. The fact of the matter, if we follow the guidelines of the Word of God we could excel in our giving and live a prosperous life
Many people today are living from pay check to pay check. It is important to have goals and aim towards that goal when it comes to finaces. The key is setting a budget. Therefore, you must have a Plan, Patience, to fulfill your purpose in budgeting. this lesson will teach you how to properly plan and keep a budget to be successful in finances.
Paul appealed to the example of sacrificial giving when he sought to motivate the Corinthians. Through the Macedonians and The Lord
There is a purpose in everything that we do. Even in our giving we must purpose in our heart with genuine and cheerfulness of what we give. We should not give out of spite, but we should give out of love. Make a vow to move up in your giving and watch The Lord move on your behalf
Seek to give bountifully, that you might give more. Giving should be in the direction of the greater to the lesser...both as individuals and congregational
-- If the Pharisees gave tithes (actually 20-30%), do we surpass them by giving any less.
We should give because we want to and not because we are told to or have to.
Paul charged Christians to give as they prosper-1Co 16:1-2
He he instructed them to give according to what they have-2 Co 8:12-13
Our giving should be in keeping with the level of our prosperity.
Seek To Excel-Paul called for Christians to abound-in the grace of giving-2 Co 8:7
With God's aid we can abound in every good work- 2 Co 9:8-10.
Jesus tells us to surpass the righteousness of the Pharisees (remember their meticulous tithing?)- Mt 5:20; Mt 23:23
If the Pharisees gave tithes (actually 20-20%) do we surpass them by giving any less
The New Testament provides us witha rich history of giving, the greatest example being the gift of Jesus Christ
As we continue this lesson on giving, we will discover that there is a release that The Lord will give to those faithful I their giving
The Bible teaches us about giving, it also teaches us about giving above and beyond what we are commanded to give. Nevertheless, we must be cheerful in all our giving and the blessings of God will shower down upon us.
When giving to The Lord we should give your best. Whether it's in time, tithes, treasure, talents, as well as your Temple, it should be the best
From the Old Testament there are examples that will inspire us to give, such as Abraham to Melchizedek, Jacob to Godfor his safe return, Israel's free Will offerings and much more

James 2:17,20/26 declares that"Faith without works is dead". Therefore, we must put our faith into action, by demonstrating it through our works. It is important that each professing Christian examine his or her own heart and life, and make sure that they possess true saving faith which is Dynamic Faith. This can only be done by Demonstrated Faith.
We need to have a faith that is exceeding the problems and issues we face. This is the kind of faith that will blow the devil away. Unshakeable, undeniable faith.
Perhaps to shock any complacent readers, James reminds us that even "Demons" have a kind of faith

This message will encourage you and help you understand; although you may be a branch you are just as important as the tree itself.
One cannot read much of God's Word without realizing that obedience to God's " commands" are essential if we are going to enjoy God's " blessings!"
The Bible teaches that obedience is better than sacrifice. Nevertheless, there are times when we should sacrifice and still be obedient to the Word of God.
As Children of God, we are suppose to be obedient to the Word of God. If we are going to receive the blessing in which the Lord grants us we must follow His commands.
God's desire for us is that we havae joy. James says count it all joy when you fall into divers temptations. In other words, we should always have joy no matter what the circumstance.
This message will encourage those who have issues, conditions, problems, etc. Not to allow your circumastances pr situations stop you from Praising the Lord. Inspite of what you are facing, you can still worship the Lord, because he is worthy.
As a body of believers we should be able to have love for our brothers and sisters, when the love of Christ is in us. Regardless of any circumstance, when we abide in Christ there's only love that can come out.
I know sometimes it may not seem like it, but our prayers are being answered. Join us in this lesson of study.
When will we learn that apart from Christ we can do nothing. We must have a growing sense of dependency for Christ and realize He is our true source of our strength.
As we were unable to get into this lesson on last week after the Holy Spirit came in and had his way in our Bible Study. We will attempt once again to learn about the evidence of abiding in Christ.

As believers in the Body of Christ, we should live a way that's pleasing to God. We are representing God and our lives should reflect on the one whom we serve. If we are going to teach it and preach it, we must live it!
There will be differences in the church. However, our job as Christians is to work out our differences for the sake of the ministry. We are to bring unity to the church in order for the church to reach its destiny.
