Mel MacIntyre is a Certified High Performance Coach.

She says “What’s it like to be on the receiving end of you?”was one of the most important questions she has ever been asked. Age 21, Mel was being coached to understand her personal impact on people. It set her on the path of self-discovery and began her quest to become the truest and most authentic version of herself. Mel says it was mind-blowing to experience how a simple, powerful question could lead to life changing self-discovery. She had a fire in my belly that kept her going when things felt really challenging. Then one day in a maelstrom of life defining events and traumas, the fire went out. And Mel burnt out. Mel then retrained as a coach and has been featured on the BBC and in The Guardian. She helps other people to become the best version of themselves.

Rachel Druckenmiller says ‘For much of my life, I silenced myself.” She describes herself as an overachiever, the “good girl.” She says ‘I only let people see the put-together version of who I was. When I needed help, I kept quiet because I didn’t want anyone to think I couldn’t handle it or that I was inadequate or incompetent in any way.’ Rachel is a singer who loved to sing and write, but didn’t share my voice publicly because she was afraid of judgment, rejection, or being embarrassed. She silenced so much of her joy for the sake of hustling to get ahead. It’s like she was living her life on mute. Rachel has been recognized as the #1 Health Promotion Professional in the U.S. in 2015, a 40 Under 40 Game Changer by Workforce Magazine in 2019, and one of The Daily Record’s Leading Women of 2020, Rachel is a national thought leader in the field of wellbeing and employee engagement. This conversation was instigated by a WhatsApp message that Nilesh sent to Saiyyidah ‘off the cuff.’ I don't normally listen to voice messages but it was his text before hand that was kind, appreciative, and curious in tone.

This side note explores life, not as balance but as harmony. In a rich, diverse and varied conversation that I had with Nadine Benjamin we spoke a lot about the idea of harmony, as opposed to balance.

When one reflects on the information that we receive about personal and professional development, and about how to be in the world, there's a lot of desire that's made for the idea of balance and as we learned in that particular conversation balance isn't always a helpful thing. It implies that if you've got a lot of stress going on at one end of the spectrum, you also need a similar amount of joy to balance that out, most of the time.

When we're operating at the ends of the spectrum it just is not healthy. And that's why I love the idea of being in harmony.

This sidenote is from a conversation with Amnah Shurfa and is all about journaling.

Now there are a number of different benefits of journaling and as xena and I discussed in the podcast it can actually have a really profound impact on what you do during the day on the outcomes that you have and. Also, with alleviating anxiety, stress and even depression, this is researched and documented. So you may have anecdotal experience of what I’m sharing but there's also significant amount of research, now that backs this up and one of the things that I found really quite empowering when I was doing my training as a positive psychologist is the impact that journaling can have on assisting one to provide or to find a direction, to gain clarity, and also to identify things that they don't want to do.

As I reflect on the conversation that I had with Dr Cynthia Whittaker I feel as if I really want to speak about different types of tears. There are plenty of other subjects that I could have discussed in this side note. But I think there is something special about the quality of tears.

Biologically, here are three or four different types of tears depending on who you speak to - there's a basal tear and emotional tear and a reflex tear.

I'm not going to speak about those things, because if you're looking for the biology and the chemical difference between tears, then I would say, go to Dr Google and ask for advice there because there's a lot of really good information out there.

What I would like to do is to speak about our response to the different types of tears that we have.

Today’s Sidenote is all about why you need a strategy. As I was speaking with Dorita Hatchett one of the things that became really, really apparent is the reason for having a strategy. Some people may call it a plan, a plan of action, some kind of idea that propels you into the future.

As a project manager myself, I like to have both a strategy and a plan. Today we're going to be looking at why strategies are important and it doesn't matter whether you're looking to plan your next holiday or whether you're thinking about what's going to be happening in the future of your career. A strategy is really, really significant. And it starts with helping you to gain clarity over the direction and the priorities you are seeking in your life.

Today's Sidenote is all about taking care of yourself, when you are taking care of others. This topic builds on a conversation that I was having with Dr Joanne Sotelo psychiatrist and high performance coach. The reason why it's so significant is because often when we are in the midst of taking care of others, of working, of getting caught up in all of the agendas that other people have for us, we forget to prioritize ourselves and take care of our being.

I'd like to give you a really strong encouragement to not just listen to the words that I'm saying, but actually to viscerally take them in and to decide what you are going to do in terms of taking care of yourself. I think we live in a time where we all know that self care is important, but not enough of us do it.

This side note is about the power of the pause and comes from the conversation with Jesse Harless.

You can listen to the full podcast here.

As Jesse and I had a conversation regarding mental health, the business and the speed of life in so many different things, what really struck me was our discussion around pausing.

If there's anything that has come out of the experience of the last couple of years, it's the need for being able to stop and reflect.

And, as I wrote in the book RESULTS The Art and Science of Getting It Done, I think there's a really, really significant gain that we can have when we stop, even if it's just for a few seconds, and the process that I outlined in the book is about resting, resetting and recovery.

Rest, reset, recovery.

Going against out usual need for speed in culture.

Stillness and silence.

Pause can be 60 seconds of breathing, a day or longer.

This side note is about alignment with your teachers from a conversation with Brandy Agerbeck.

You can listen to the full podcast here.

As I was speaking with Brandy Agerbeck, so many different things came up and one of the key things was ideas and the concept of alignment with your teachers. As an adult we might be listening to this and thinking "well, I don't have any teachers anymore", but you do. Because books that you read, things that you watch on TV, your coaches, your trainers, your support... they all have the opportunity to be your teacher - if you will allow them, but it does require a little shift of perspective.

So how do you get alignment with your teachers?
