In this episode of the FranchiseU! Podcast, Dr. Kathy Gosser speaks with Matt Kunz, President and CEO of Fastest Labs, about relationship-first leadership, franchisee coaching, and the systems required to support sustainable growth. Matt draws on more than 27 years in franchising, beginning with his experience as a Sylvan Learning franchisee. By closely following the operating model, maintaining disciplined marketing and sales practices, and focusing on execution, he outperformed many of his peers, acquired struggling centers, and successfully turned them around. That experience eventually led him to Sylvan’s corporate operations team and later to leadership roles at Neighborly, where he guided brands including Mr. Rooter Plumbing and Five Star Painting.
Today, Matt leads Fastest Labs, a private-equity-backed franchise system with approximately 250 locations providing drug, alcohol, and DNA testing services. The company serves businesses and individuals through compliance-focused solutions, rapid results, and respectful customer service. During the conversation, Matt explains why franchisees must develop a strong business-to-business sales mindset, how local relationship-building supports lead generation, and how national accounts help the brand serve clients with operations across multiple markets. He also discusses mentorship, communication, franchisee accountability, and the importance of combining proven processes with personal connection.
Matt brings more than two decades of franchise leadership experience and has helped guide several brands through significant periods of growth. Most notably, he helped scale Five Star Painting from $41 million to $156 million in systemwide revenue. He has led franchise systems ranging from roughly 230 to more than 300 locations, consistently emphasizing people, operational discipline, and long-term performance. In this episode of FranchiseU!, join your host, Dr. Kathy Gosser, as she interviews Richie Huffman, founder and CEO of Celebree School, about the deliberate path from a single preschool in 1994 to a nationally expanding franchise system. After building the company to 26 corporate locations, Richie began franchising in 2019, formalizing the systems, standards, and culture that had fueled decades of steady growth. Today, with new franchise agreements, expansion into additional states, and recognition on Entrepreneur’s Franchise 500, Celebree’s growth reflects both demand and disciplined execution.
Central to that expansion is a commitment to consistency. Celebree supports franchisees through clearly defined owner competencies, strengthened operating standards, required first-year accounting guidance, and a real estate fund designed to acquire and lease properties to operators. These structures reduce risk while preserving brand integrity.
Richie’s leadership philosophy centers on “growing people big and small.” That includes mapped career paths for educators, hiring based on nine core competencies, rigorous market analysis, and responsiveness to trends such as universal pre-K funding. Through the Huffman Family Foundation and partnerships with organizations like Ronald McDonald House and children’s hospitals, Celebree extends its mission beyond the classroom. As President and CEO, Richie remains closely engaged with franchisees, shaping a culture defined by accountability, service, and long-term vision.

You know what's great about franchising? It is that almost any concept can be franchised. And there's one I hadn't thought about. That is in the world of beauty, determining what colors look best on you. It's something that maybe those of us knew in the 80s and 90s, but House of Colour USA really knows what they're doing today. And I had the opportunity to visit House of Colour in this podcast with Ally Van Iten who is the CEO. She walks us through the franchise, the possibilities, what they do for people, and really what a wonderful opportunity it is. Please take a listen.
In this episode of FranchiseU!, host Dr. Kathy Gosser sits down with Ally Van Iten, CEO of House of Colour USA, to explore how a personal color analysis business from the 80s has grown into a thriving global franchise with over 400 stylists. Allie shares her inspiring journey from stay-at-home mom to franchisee, and ultimately to CEO, highlighting the flexibility and empowerment franchising made possible in her life. Together, Kathy and Ally unpack:
· The emotional impact of House of Colour USA’s services—helping clients rediscover confidence and self-expression.
· How Ally transitioned from running six franchises to leading a fast-growing international brand.
· Why passion and people skills matter more than a beauty background for franchisees.
· How House of Colour trains, supports, and equips entrepreneurs for success.
· The role AI might play in the future of personal styling—and why human connection will always set House of Color apart.
Whether you’re curious about franchising opportunities, fascinated by the science of color, or just love hearing a story of resilience and reinvention, this conversation is packed with inspiration and practical takeaways.

This is truly a special episode that shares an open conversation between two friends about lessons they have learned during their careers. Luckily, we are able to read about some of them in the book, Lessons From The Drive Thru.
Monica Rothgery’s Bio:
Thirty years ago, Monica was a Restaurant General Manager for a Taco Bell outside of Chicago where she struggled to understand the essence of leadership. It was a constant uphill climb. Frustrated, she couldn’t understand how to make her team care about customers, or even want to show up for work. Turnover was high and morale was low. She missed sales goals, turnover targets and of course, profit.
One very late night, after a particularly
challenging day, she sat on the floor of her dining room. As the tears of
frustration fell, she made a vow: “IF I ever get promoted out of the
restaurant, I will spend my life trying to make life easier for managers.”
Monica did get promoted and over time
discovered the secrets to achieving great results and building great teams.
Along the way she studied human behavior, organizational effectiveness,
instructional design and business strategy. She analyzed great front-line
leader behaviors to find common threads. She discovered the essentials to
becoming a great business leader and achieving results: How to…
· Embrace who you are at work
· Make your mark on the lives of others
· Figure out what is yours to do
· Become the leader that no one ever leaves.
Monica went from running one restaurant to leading 4000 restaurants as the COO of KFC in the United States. Today, Monica continues her passion to empower frontline leaders through keynotes, coaching and workshops.
