This is the 200th episode and the season finale, and I'm closing out the season by defending the most controversial breakfast on the internet: oatmeal.

I'm only half joking. Yes, I answer all of your oatmeal questions in this episode. Steel cut versus rolled, how to add protein, cooked versus overnight, and whether it deserves its reputation as a heart-healthy food. But the real conversation is about something bigger. If a humble bowl of oatmeal can make us anxious, then we have some food noise to untangle.

I share why so many of us are overcomplicating food and what information overload does to our confidence. My hope is that you finish this one feeling calmer, more confident, and ready to spend less time thinking about food and more time living your life.

Whenever I talk about intuitive eating, women tell me the same thing: "I love the idea, but I don't trust myself around food." And when I talk to dietitians who help people shift from a weight-centric to weight-neutral or inclusive practice, they find it hard to communicate the idea of self-trust. If you can relate to either of these, this conversation is exactly what you need!

This week I'm joined by Fiona Sutherland, an accredited practicing dietitian, author, and mentor from Melbourne, and one of the most thoughtful and experienced voices in the world of nutrition. Together we explore why self-trust feels so hard in midlife, especially when your body, hunger, and energy seem to be changing overnight.

Fiona and I unpack how years of dieting can chip away at your confidence, why outsourcing your food decisions to a plan feels safer (and what it costs you), and what gently rebuilding trust actually looks like, starting with curiosity instead of control. We also talk about why reaching for support is a sign of courage, and the surprising ingredient Fiona believes most of us are missing in midlife.

If you've ever wondered whether you can trust yourself again, I think you'll leave this one feeling a little more hopeful. Listen now.

Is it perimenopause, or are you just finally fed up with the world? Honestly, it might be both.

In this listener Q&A, I'm answering the questions so many of you have been sending me, and they're the kind that probably sound familiar. We start with mood, because so many of us feel more irritable, less patient, and a lot less willing to tolerate things we used to put up with. I'll walk you through what's happening with your hormones and neurotransmitters, and why your reasons for feeling done are still valid even when biology is part of the picture.

From there, I tackle the big one: the belief that decades of dieting have "broken" your metabolism. I talk about what's really driving the lose-it-gain-it cycle, why intermittent fasting leaves so many women feeling awful, and the food guilt that shows up over something as ordinary as two slices of bread.

I also answer a question that pulled at my heart, from a parent who overheard their daughter say she needed to "walk off" her dessert. If you've ever heard your own voice come out of someone you love, this one is for you.

If any of this lands, I'd love to keep the conversation going. You'll find a link in the show notes to send me your questions for the next Q&A, and if you're ready for support:

What is acceptance is the requirement for growht? What would life look like if you just stopped trying to fix yourself?

That's the question at the heart of this conversation with returning guest Alli Spotts-De Lazzer, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Certified Eating Disorders Specialist who has spent nearly 20 years working with people around eating, body image, and the experience of living in a body.

We dig into why self-esteem is a shaky foundation in midlife, when opinions of ourselves rise and fall with every hormonal shift and identity change. Alli's working definition of self-acceptance cuts deeper: choosing to stay with yourself even when shame, judgment, ego, or fear try to pull you away. It's knowing yourself, plus self-compassion, plus the willingness to face reality.

The biggest misunderstanding we tackle: acceptance is not resignation. Resignation says "it is what it is, there's nothing I can do." Acceptance says "it is what it is. What's next?" One keeps you stuck. The other creates the conditions for growth.

We also do a live, unscripted experiment using my own belly and body image history, which turned into one of the most unexpectedly moving moments I've had on this podcast.

Alli also shares news about her new book, My Child Has an Eating Disorder: An Essential Guide for Parents of Kids, Teens, and Adults (Bloomsbury Academic, 2026).

I sat down with Cadence Dubus, founder of Brooklyn Strength, host of the Busybody Podcast, and we talked about why midlife movement gets so complicated when you’ve been trained to chase fitness rules, perfect routines, and a specific body. We unpack how to rebuild trust so movement supports real life, not a pass-fail scoreboard.

  • Why the "one size fits all" fitness world was never designed for bodies that cycle, fluctuate, and change (like ours)
  • How metrics like step counts and Apple Watch data may be creating noise instead of information
  • The difference between being a baker (give me a formula!) and a cook (I'll figure it out), and why both are valid starting points
  • What it actually looks like to work with someone on movement from a somatic, body-centered approach
  • How to know if you're doing "enough," and why your body's cravings are more reliable than any tracker
  • Why joy and play might be the most underrated missing ingredients in midlife fitness culture

About Cadence Dubus: Cadence Dubus is the founder of Brooklyn Strength, a 16-year-old fitness and wellness company offering movement coaching and courses virtually and in person. She is also the host of the Busybody Podcast. Cadence's work is rooted in somatic movement, body autonomy, and helping people find sustainable fitness practices that fit their actual lives. I'm bringing back one of my favourite conversations this week because May is Osteoporosis Awareness Month, and this topic is too important to let it gather dust in the archive.

If you've ever left a bone density scan feeling more confused than when you walked in, or got a result that said "osteopenia" and weren't quite sure whether to panic or carry on as normal, this episode is for you.

In this conversation, I'm joined by Rebekah Rotstein, Pilates instructor, movement educator, and founder of the Buff Bones method. Rebekah was diagnosed with osteoporosis at 28, which means she has been living with and studying this topic for nearly two decades. She brings a perspective that is part patient, part expert, and very relatable.

We get into what bone density testing actually measures and where it falls short, why osteopenia is not something to brush off or ignore, what strength training for your bones really looks like (and why you do not need to be standing in front of a weight rack to do it), and the important difference between your bone density conversation and your fracture risk conversation. They are parallel, but they are not the same thing.

I also share my own take on calcium and why the "just take a supplement" approach has underperformed, and what it really means to nourish your bones with the whole capsule, not just one ingredient.

About Rebekah Rotstein: Rebekah Rotstein is a Pilates instructor, integrated movement educator, and founder of the Buff Bones method, a medically endorsed exercise system for bone and joint health with certified instructors in more than 30 countries. She serves on the Society for Women's Health Research Bone Health Roundtable and has been advocating for earlier bone screening since her own diagnosis at 28. If you're feeling confused by all the menopause fitness advice, this episode will clear that up for you!

I am so glad to welcome Dr. Maria Luque back to The Midlife Feast. Maria is a menopause fitness expert with a literal PhD in this space, and she is one of the very few people I trust to cut through the noise in the increasingly crowded menopause fitness world. And there is a lot of noise. Self-proclaimed experts, clickbait advice, "you must lift heavy four times a week or your bones will crumble" fear-mongering. No wonder so many of the women I work with feel paralyzed before they even start.

In this conversation, we get into:

  • Why the fitness space has become a swamp of misinformation, and how to spot it
  • The Sally story (a composite of so many women I talk to) and why feeling behind is keeping you stuck
  • Why capacity, not willpower, is the real conversation, and why "we all have the same 24 hours" makes both of us want to punch a wall
  • Movement snacks, lowering the bar, and Maria's even better idea of throwing the bar away
  • Why functional goals (lifting your dog, getting up off the toilet at 80, playing with grandkids) are far more sustainable than weight-loss goals
  • How to celebrate the small wins so you actually want to keep going
  • The missing ingredient in midlife, and it might not be what you think

This is the conversation I wish every woman in perimenopause and menopause could hear before another fitness influencer convinces her she is failing at something that was never designed for her in the first place.

If clients come to me because they are out of capacity, not out of knowledge, this episode is the same conversation in fitness form. You already know enough. You just need permission to trust yourself.

About Dr. Maria Luque: Dr. Maria Luque is a menopause fitness expert, health science professor, US Air Force veteran, and mother. She holds a PhD in Health Sciences focused on quality of life in menopause, and her work brings a weight-neutral, evidence-based perspective to the often confusing world of fitness in midlife. I noticed a three-year stretch where I’m barely in family photos, even though I was there., and I don’t want that for you. In this episode, I share 3 practices to shift away from chasing "flattering" and choosing presence instead, so you can be visible in midlife and stop letting pictures decide how you feel about your body.

I talk about:

  • Why the point of a picture is the moment, not your good side
  • Reframing photos as time capsules rather than auditions
  • How to stop letting selfie culture (and the 99 deleted shots) shape how you see yourself
  • The reframe I borrowed from a recent guest that I cannot stop thinking about: visibility is generosity
  • Why staying in the picture is one of the most powerful things you can do for the women coming up behind yo

I’m sure you have a friend who needs to hear this, so I’d love if you’d share this episode with them! And if this episode helps you keep a photo instead of deleting it, I would love to hear that too. You can always send me fan mail through the podcast website.

This summer, your only assignment is to be in the photo. You don't have to love it. You don't have to feel beautiful in it. You just have to be in it. The moment matters. The world needs more pictures of midlife women living in their bodies.

If this episode resonates and you want real support around body image before summer hits, there are still a couple of spots left in my six-week Midlife Body Image Lab if you're listening before May 16th.

I'm joined by Dr. Helen Wall, a GP and registered menopause specialist from England, and author of the new book ADHD and Menopause (May 14th, 2026). Dr. Wall speaks out about the intersection of ADHD, neurodivergence, and hormonal changes in women.

In this episode, we get into the science behind why estrogen fluctuations destabilize dopamine signaling in the brain, and why that matters so much more for women with ADHD (diagnosed or not). We talk about masking, the hidden costs of over-functioning, why women and girls are still being missed for decades, and how progesterone sensitivity can make things even more complicated. We also explore the connection between ADHD and PMDD, and what options exist for women who are navigating both menopause and neurodivergence.

This episode offers the science, the validation, and the compassion to help you understand what's going on.

I also share my own experience being diagnosed with ADHD at 19 and then watching it "unmask" when perimenopause crash-landed at 37. This one gets personal, and I think you'll feel seen.

About Dr. Helen Wall: Dr. Helen Wall is a GP and registered menopause specialist with the British Menopause Society. She advocates for neurodivergent women who have been misdiagnosed, mislabeled, and left to burn out without understanding what's going on. Her awareness of the ADHD-menopause connection grew through her daughter's neurodivergent journey and the patterns she began recognizing in her own menopause clinics. Her new book, ADHD and Menopause, is available on May 14th (and for pre-order) wherever books are sold.

Have you ever talked yourself out of wearing something, going somewhere, or simply being seen because of what your body looks like? This episode is one you're going to want to save and share!

I sat down with Lise Thorne, who you might know as @walking_this_way on Instagram, after one of her reels stopped me mid-scroll. In it, she walked into the ocean in a bikini on a family vacation, no filter, no preparation, no waiting for a "better" version of herself. That video went around the world because women everywhere saw themselves in it.

Lise is 49, a mum, a triathlete, and she is loudly on a mission for women to take up space. We talk about the moment she looked at a photo of her 16-year-old self and realized her body was never the problem, it was the story she was telling herself. We get into how our Gen X generation was taught there was one right way to have a body, why the critical voice in our heads isn't protecting us anymore, and why tiny steps toward being seen are where the real magic happens.

This is one of those conversations that will leave you feeling like you just got a pep talk from a friend who truly gets it.

Have you ever been having a perfectly good day, feeling comfortable in what you're wearing, and then caught a glimpse of yourself in a mirror and you suddenly feel the floor fall out from under you? That moment of being yanked out of your body is something I hear all the time.

Meet the comparison lizard, the part of our brain wired for social comparison. It used to be a survival skill. Now it's a make-work project that fuels body dissatisfaction, especially in menopause when both the scale and the shape are changing in ways that feel unfamiliar.

Here's what I want you to know: food work and body work are not the same. I've worked with hundreds of women who feel great about their relationship with food but are still getting pulled into bad body image moments that send them right back toward the diet cycle. When I sent a newsletter about this recently, the responses flooded in. You're not alone, and your body is not the problem.

In this episode, I'm sharing the research on body dissatisfaction and intuitive eating in midlife, why body appreciation is the evidence-based path forward, and details about the Midlife Body Image Lab, a six-week program built around guided experiments to test and change the belief that your body is the problem. This isn't a course with videos and worksheets. It's coached, community-based work where we do the experiments together. If you're listening in April or early May 2026, you can join us. Otherwise, hop on the waitlist for the next time doors open.

What if the dreams you thought you missed the deadline on are the ones you're meant to follow now?

Becca Kidwell spent her 30s teaching high school English, convinced it was too late to pursue a creative career. She'd learned what so many of us Gen X women can relate to: if you didn't lock in your path by 30, the door was closed. But then something shifted and she started noticing older artists who were just beginning their careers and thriving. She met her now-husband, who encouraged her to move to New York and start a theater company, and on her 40th birthday, she performed her first cabaret show.

Ten years later, Becca is releasing her debut album, What You Don't See, on her 50th birthday. And the title track? It's about something so many of us feel in midlife but rarely say out loud: I'm tired. I'm tired of performing, of smiling through exhaustion, of pretending I have endless capacity. But what you don't see is how tired I really am.

In this Story Session, Becca shares her journey from being afraid of being seen to stepping fully onto the stage as herself. We talk about the permission piece that midlife gives so many of us, the resilience it takes to keep showing up for your dreams, and why creativity isn't just for the young. If you've ever felt like it's too late to follow a passion, chase a dream, or try something new, this episode is for you.

You know that moment when you catch your reflection unexpectedly and think, "Who is that?" Not in a curious way, but in a way that feels like you don't recognize yourself? If you've had that moment, this episode is for you.

In this episode, we're talking about the evolution of body positivity and acceptance, the challenges of embracing body diversity in a culture that's currently shrinking, and how we can find peace with ourselves right now, in the bodies we're in today.

Kristina brings such clarity to the difference between body positivity and body acceptance, and why acceptance isn't resignation. She shares her own story of body grief, what it felt like to lose the identity that came with being thin, and how she found freedom on the other side of that grief. We also talk about the contraction and expansion happening in our current cultural moment (hello, GLP-1 era) and why this might be the final push before more of us say "enough."

If you've been stuck in body grief, if you feel betrayed by your changing body, or if you're exhausted from fighting yourself, this conversation will meet you right where you are.

In this episode, you'll learn:

  • The difference between body positivity (a social justice movement) and body acceptance (a personal practice)
  • Why body acceptance isn't resignation, it's actually the path to real change
  • How to move through body grief instead of staying stuck in it
  • Why your body isn't betraying you, even when it feels that way
  • What's underneath our resistance to body changes in midlife (spoiler: it's not about the weight)
  • How to stop sourcing your worth externally and start finding safety within yourself

If your cravings feel more intense than ever, you're not alone.

In this second helping (my creative take on replay 🤣) of episode 117, I'm tackling one of the most-asked questions in my inbox: why do cravings feel so out of control in perimenopause and menopause, and what can you do about it? Spoiler alert: it's not about cutting out sugar or having more willpower.

I break down the three types of hunger (physical, taste, and emotional), explain why perimenopause symptoms like sleep disruption and hot flashes amplify emotional hunger, and share a framework for decoding your cravings instead of fighting them. Whether it's the 7pm snacking spiral, the weekend binge, or those intense drive-thru cravings when you're alone in the car, I walk you through how to press pause without judgment and respond in a way that addresses what you need.

This episode is for anyone who has ever felt hijacked by a craving, blamed themselves for lack of control, or wondered if menopause is making everything harder. Because yes, your hormones matter, but the solution isn't another restrictive food rule.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • Why cravings are normal and everyone is an emotional eater to some degree
  • The difference between physical hunger, taste hunger, and emotional hunger
  • How estrogen and progesterone influence appetite (and why perimenopause amplifies cravings)
  • Why restricting foods you enjoy intensifies cravings for those exact foods
  • The critical skill of pressing pause without saying no
  • Real examples of decoding evening cravings, weekend patterns, and alone-time eating

Food freedom is permission to say yes to cake, but it's also permission to say no to dessert because you're full, satisfied, and know you can have it anytime you want. That's the level of trust and attunement I'm talking about in this conversation with Sam Previte, registered dietitian and founder of Find Food Freedom.

Sam is one of those dietitians whose passion for intuitive eating comes through in everything she does. From her popular social media accounts to her private practice, Sam has built her career on helping people make peace with food and their bodies. But she wasn't always an intuitive eating dietitian. Like so many of us, she came out of school steeped in weight-centric nutrition and personally struggling with disordered eating.

In this episode, Sam shares her journey from diet culture dietitian to becoming one of the loudest advocates for food freedom. We talk about what it really takes to unlearn decades of diet rules, how to build interoceptive awareness when your signals feel unreliable (hello, perimenopause), and the question on everyone's mind right now: where do GLP-1 medications fit into intuitive eating work?

In this episode, you'll learn:

  • What food freedom actually means (and why it's not just eating whatever you want)
  • How Sam went from teaching intentional weight loss to becoming a passionate intuitive eating advocate
  • Where GLP-1 medications and intuitive eating can coexist (and where they can't)
  • How to build attunement when your body's signals feel disrupted by perimenopause or menopause
  • Why hobbies might be the missing ingredient in your midlife journey

Almost every day, someone tells me they're exhausted, tired, or completely burnt out. But burnout isn't just another word for tired - it's a medical diagnosis with real science behind it. It relates to your capacity, your ability to recover, and importantly, it's deeply impacted by your environment and your hormones.

In this conversation with Dr. Ashley Margeson, a naturopathic doctor and burnout expert, we dive into what burnout really is, how it's different from everyday stress, and why women in midlife are especially vulnerable. If you've ever felt like you're carrying a backpack that gets heavier and heavier but you can't put it down, this episode is for you.

Dr. Margeson breaks down the four stages of burnout using a brilliant bank account analogy, explains why our declining progesterone levels in perimenopause shrink our stress buffer, and shares her practical ripples, waves, and currents framework for building capacity when you're already depleted. We also tackle the hard question: how do you recover from burnout if you can't quit your job?

In this episode, you'll learn:

  • The symptoms that define clinical burnout (and how it's different from stress)
  • The roles of estrogen and progesterone when it comes to burnout recovery and how unpredictable hormones in perimenopause amplify stress and make recovery harder
  • The four stages of burnout: savings and investing, paycheck to paycheck, overdraft, and SOS mode
  • Ripples, waves, and currents: actionable capacity builders you can use today
  • Why organizational policies matter as much as individual actions in preventing workplace burnout

Laughing, coughing, sneezing... if these everyday moments have started feeling a little less carefree and a little more leak-prone, you're not alone. And despite what you've been told, the answer isn't just "do more Kegels."

In this conversation, movement teacher and pelvic floor expert Lauren Ohayon shares why the pelvic floor doesn't just "squeeze." It dances, responds to gravity, and works as part of a whole-body system involving your breath, core, and nervous system. We talk about why menopause brings new pelvic floor challenges (spoiler: it's not just estrogen), how belly-gripping and chronic tension patterns create downstream problems, and why feeling safe in your body is foundational to pelvic floor health.

If you've been living with light leakage, pain with intimacy, or that uncomfortable feeling of prolapse, this episode offers a refreshing, shame-free perspective on what's happening and practical ways to support your pelvic floor that go way beyond squeezing.

About Lauren: Lauren Ohayon is a longtime movement teacher who has spent decades helping people reconnect with their bodies. After a back injury in her early 20s led her deep into biomechanics and anatomy, she created Restore Your Core, an online functional strength program focused on core and pelvic floor health. Lauren's approach blends somatic movement, storytelling, and nervous system work to help people feel at home in their bodies again.

Decision fatigue isn't about willpower - it's about how many decisions you're being asked to make when your capacity is already maxed out. And if you've been caught in the diet cycle for years (or decades), you know exactly what I'm talking about. After 25 different diet plans competing for space in your head, every meal becomes another minefield of "am I doing this right?" questions that leave you exhausted before you even start cooking.

In this solo episode, I'm sharing Sarah's story (with her permission), who spent the last year working with me to finally break free from diet mentality and decision fatigue. She's having regular, balanced meals without stress, her cholesterol and blood pressure are down, and for the first time ever, she didn't spiral in the bathing suit change room.

I walk you through exactly how we got there, including the biological layer that makes decision fatigue even more challenging in midlife when brain fog, and hormone fluctuations that are all competing for your mental bandwidth. But here's the good news: there are gentle framework strategies that can actually reduce the number of decisions you have to make, help you enjoy the process (not just chase the outcome), and keep you moving forward at your own pace.

In this episode, you'll learn:

  • Why decision fatigue is structural, not a character flaw, and why women in midlife are especially vulnerable
  • The biological layer: how brain fog and cognitive changes in menopause make familiar diet patterns even more tempting
  • Three framework strategies to reduce decision fatigue around food (and why frameworks are NOT the same as rules)
  • How the FEAST framework works in my community to support long-term behavior change without the all-or-nothing trap
  • Why enjoying the process matters more than rushing to the outcome

If you've ever hidden in the back of a family photo, skipped a headshot session, or cringed when you saw a candid picture of yourself, this episode is for you.

I sat down with Kristen Vallejo, a portrait and branding photographer based in upstate New York, who has made it her mission to help women feel comfortable and confident being seen.

In this conversation, we unpack why so many of us (especially women navigating midlife) have such a complicated relationship with being photographed. We talk about the role social media has played in making us feel like every picture has to be perfect, why menopause can make it even harder to recognize yourself in photos, and how we can start to shift that.

One of the most powerful reframes Kristen shares is this: visibility is generosity. When you hide from the camera, you're also withholding yourself ( your gifts, your presence, your relatability) from the people who need to see you. That hit me in a deep way, and I think it will for you too.

We also talk about body diversity and representation, why photographers aren't looking at you with the critical lens you're using on yourself, and some practical tips to make any photo session feel less like a pressure cooker.

Kristen's missing ingredient in midlife? Novelty. And I love that answer.

In this episode, we cover:

  • Why so many women approach the camera with terror, and what's underneath it
  • How social media has raised the bar for "acceptable" photos and what that costs us
  • Why going through menopause can make seeing yourself in photos feel particularly confronting
  • What body neutrality looks like in practice, even in a portrait session
  • The power of representation and why your visible presence matters more than you think
  • Practical tips for preparing for a photo session without the overwhelm

About Kristen Vallejo: Kristen Vallejo is a portrait and branding photographer based in upstate New York, specializing in entrepreneurs, small business owners, and those with animals in their work. She's passionate about capturing the real person behind the lens — not just a polished pose. You can find her at kristenvallejo.com and on Instagram at @kristenvallejophotography.

Feeling overwhelmed by conflicting advice about menopause and HRT? You're not alone, and you're not imagining it.

In this eye-opening conversation, journalist and author Fiona Clark (MenoWars: Why Menopause's Moment Has Gone Horribly Wrong) joins me to unpack why the menopause conversation has become so polarizing. What started as a grassroots movement of women advocating for better care has evolved into a confusing battlefield of conflicting claims, FOMO-inducing headlines, and monetized advice that leaves women more overwhelmed than empowered.

Fiona brings her unique background, which includes a degree in anatomy and physiology, decades as a journalist, and her own experience navigating menopause to help us understand how we got here. We explore the "menopause wars," from the rise of influential voices making claims that science doesn't always support, to the gatekeeping accusations that emerge when medical professionals push back, to the dangerous erosion of trust in evidence-based medicine.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • How the menopause advocacy movement transformed from collegial to combative
  • Why testosterone has become the latest battleground (and what happened when Fiona stopped taking it)
  • The FOMO epidemic: dementia, heart disease, and what the research actually shows
  • Why "gatekeeping" accusations undermine the scientific process
  • The commercialization of menopause and how confusion gets monetized
  • What HRT can (and can't) do, and why cutting out the noise matters more than anything
  • Why women deserve to make informed decisions about their bodies without everyone else's opinions

Fiona's message is clear: it's not about being pro- or anti-HRT. It's about cutting through the noise, understanding what science actually supports, and reclaiming your right to make informed decisions about your own body without FOMO, fear, or unsolicited opinions.

If you've felt confused, frustrated, or exhausted by the menopause information overload, this conversation will help you find your footing.

About Fiona: Fiona is an award winning investigative journalist who spent the first 20 years of her career in the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. She covered the 1991 coup in Soviet Union, the Balkans War and went on to be supervising producer of its current affairs equivalent of the BBC Newsnight. Her degree is in Sports Medicine and some 20 years ago she went into medical publishing. She has written for The Lancet and various other medical publications. For the past 8 years she has been working in the menopause space and is the co-founder of the Menopause Research and Education Fund and the author of MenoWars - a look at the state of women’s health through the lens of the current debates in menopause.

Ever feel overwhelmed by conflicting nutrition advice? One influencer swears by seed oils while another demonizes them. Your feed is flooded with "80 grams of protein" meal challenges, and you're left wondering: what should I actually believe?

In this episode, I sit down with Colleen Christensen, registered dietitian, recovering perfectionist, and the compassionate voice behind the wildly popular @No.Food.Rules Instagram account. Colleen shares her personal journey from competitive dietetics student to her struggle with eating disorders, and ultimately to becoming one of the leading voices helping people unlearn decades of diet culture programming.

This conversation is a masterclass in cutting through nutrition misinformation. Colleen breaks down why seed oils have become the internet's latest villain, what's really happening with the protein obsession, and why authority bias keeps us trusting the wrong "experts." But more importantly, she shares the one thing that changed everything for her recovery: learning to experiment with food instead of following rigid rules.

In this episode, you'll learn:

  • Why reading the headline isn't enough, and how to actually evaluate nutrition studies
  • The two biggest nutrition myths getting in the way of normal eating right now
  • How to become your own best experiment (and why that's more powerful than any meal plan)
  • Why the education piece matters just as much as the inspiration
  • What it really means to find joy in midlife eating, beyond just saying "all foods fit"

If the word “selfish” still triggers guilt for you, this episode is the permission slip you didn’t know you needed. I’m joined by the ever-wise Suzy Reading to explore why so many of us in midlife struggle to receive support, set boundaries, and prioritize our own needs — even when we know better.

We unpack the deep roots of people-pleasing, the pressure to be endlessly self-reliant, and how we can start to reclaim selfish as something powerful, not shameful. If you’ve been doing all the “right” self-care things and still feel depleted, this conversation will help you connect the dots — and offer a new, more compassionate way forward.

Welcome to 2026, where it suddenly feels harder than ever to talk about menopause, health, and nutrition without the conversation getting hijacked by weight loss. In this longer-than-usual episode, I’m joined by family physician and writer Dr. Mara Gordon (who proudly describes herself as an “anti-diet doctor”) to talk about the question that's been on my mind lately: Is a weight-neutral menopause still possible?

Mara and I unpack what weight neutrality actually means in real-world healthcare, why the “weight loss fixes everything” narrative has gotten louder again, and whether GLP-1 medications can fit into an informed, values-based, body-autonomy-first approach to care.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • What I mean by “weight neutral” (and why it’s not the same as “anti-weight loss”)
  • Why menopause weight changes can create so much urgency, fear, and pressure
  • How to support weight-neutral conversations even when cholesterol, blood sugar, or blood pressure change
  • The “Mediterranean pattern,” and why nutrition strategies can help without turning into restriction
  • GLP-1s: what they can do well (and what they cannot do)
  • Why a lot of expectations about weight loss are shaped by culture, not medicine
  • Why “I want to avoid meds” is often about something deeper than the medication

About my guest, Dr. Mara Gordon
Dr. Mara Gordon is a family physician in Camden, New Jersey. She’s also a writer, including NPR’s Real Talk with a Doc column, and she writes a Substack newsletter called Your Doctor Friend, about healthcare being a mess and how we can figure it out together. She’s also working on a book about diet culture and medicine, expected in 2027.

What if the loudest voice at your meals isn’t hunger, but an overactive alarm telling you you’re doing it “wrong”? In this episode, I dig into the link between food guilt and relentless food noise, and show how midlife shifts, hormones, sleep, mood, and capacity can crank that alarm even higher. Sometimes the routines that feel the hardest to change are the ones that once helped us cope. In this episode, therapist and eating-disorder specialist Signe Darpinian breaks down how those patterns get wired into the brain, why diet culture reinforces them, and how midlife is actually an ideal time to reshape habits with clarity and compassion.

We dig into what it really takes to unwind the patterns that feel automatic, especially the ones that show up at the end of a long day or week. You’ll hear how small, well-timed shifts can loosen the grip of old routines and create space for choices that actually feel good.

We also explore simple tools for calming the mental swirl that fuels cravings and second-guessing, along with a gentler approach to movement and nourishment that supports energy, mood, and a steadier sense of self. It’s all about building habits that fit your real life, not forcing yourself into rigid rules.

If you’re stepping away from dieting and looking for routines that feel kinder, more sustainable, and more you, this conversation offers encouragement, clarity, and a practical path forward.

What if the fear of “looking older” isn’t really about wrinkles at all, but about relevance, visibility, and power? I welcome registered dietitian and author Deb Benfield to dig into internalized ageism and the subtle ways culture teaches us to distrust our future selves. We walk about how it gets tangled up with diet culture, wellness trends, and perfectionism. Together we unpack why compliments like “you haven’t aged a bit” keep youth on a pedestal, how patriarchy and ableism shape appearance pressure, and what it takes to build a truly age-affirming life. We talk about:

  • Defining internalized ageism and why it starts early
  • Separating facts of aging from fear-based stories

We all want to simplify nutrition (and life!) but are we going down the wrong path when it comes to finding "one thing" for nutrition in menopause? Laura Clark RD and I talk about how real progress in midlife comes from flexibility, self-trust, and simple, satisfying meals. We break down the hype around protein, fiber, and even the microbiome so food feels calmer, kinder, and more doable. In this episode you'll hear:

• why chasing a single fix creates stress not change
• how Laura’s practice shifted from weight-centric targets to nuance
• protein without perfection and what steadies your morning
• fiber and microbiome benefits without counting or 30-plant pressure
• simple plate-building: protein, carbs you enjoy, and some crunch
• escaping on-it off-it thinking and perfectionism loops
• social comparison traps and giving yourself permission
• redefining progress as small choices that stack
• adding fun back into food and midlife

If your closet feels like a battlefield and getting dressed has turned into a daily reminder that your body isn’t the same as it used to be, you’re not alone. In this episode, I’m joined by personal stylist Jacquelyn Prattipati, who helps women in midlife rediscover confidence and comfort through clothes that fit the body (and the life) they have now.

We’re talking about what “feeling put together” really means, why style has nothing to do with size, and how to stop waiting for a smaller body to wear what you love. You’ll walk away with practical tips for finding clothes that fit today’s body, letting go of the “someday jeans,” and remembering that your body isn’t the problem, your clothes just need to catch up.

Menopause can scramble your mood, planning, memory, and appetite cues, especially if you’re living with ADHD. My guest this week is Diana Reid, RD and we dive into how shifting estrogen affects dopamine in the brain and why that can make meal planning feel impossible, grocery stores overwhelming, and evenings vulnerable to emotional hunger and snacking.

Together, we map the hidden steps that turn “what’s for dinner?” into a 30-step project and show how to lower the cognitive load and decision fatigue. Think forecasts instead of rigid schedules, two to three-day meal windows, and a “nutrition capsule wardrobe” you can refresh monthly for novelty.

We also get real about dopamine seeking, emotional hunger, and the link between ADHD and binge patterns. The antidote isn’t restriction, it’s regulation and pleasure. Learn how to prevent primal hunger with predictable protein and fiber, add texture and heat for sensory satisfaction, and plan pleasure on purpose!

If this conversation helps you feel seen, subscribe, share it with a friend, and leave a review so more midlife listeners can find food freedom and confidence.

Midlife brain fog and overwhelm aren’t signs of falling apart. It’s really just your biology getting louder. Dr. Jen Wolkin, a Harvard-trained neuropsychologist, explains how perimenopause can reveal ADHD that’s been there all along and why compassion, not willpower, brings clarity.

We unpack how estrogen shifts dopamine and norepinephrine, why hormone swings magnify time blindness and emotional reactivity, and how perfectionism and people-pleasing crumble under midlife’s mental load.

You’ll walk away with simple tools for clearer focus and steadier mood, including protein-forward meals, grazing stations to beat decision fatigue, and scripts for asking for help. This episode is science, validation, and relief all in one.

The words “diet and exercise” often feel like a trap door into diet culture and the diet mentality. Given that the theme for this year's World Menopause Day is lifestyle medicine, I wanted to explore lifestyle medicine through a behavior-first lens and share compassionate, doable choices that actually fit your life. Starting with real stories—a cholesterol scare that triggered a Google spiral and a breast cancer survivor who felt she “failed” exercise—we'll explore why language carries weight and how reframing goals can lift the pressure without losing the science. I reframe lifestyle medicine as behavior change medicine and share practical ways to support menopause with flexible food patterns, mindful eating for satisfaction, and low-capacity day forecasting.

We'll cover:

• Why words matter
• Behavior change vs chasing an outcome
• Redefining healthy eating
• A plant-forward and fiber focused approach
• Persistence vs consistency as a food strategy
• Mindful eating to boost satisfaction and awareness
• Forecasting meals to reduce decision fatigue
• Capsule menus and targeting tough meal times
• Personalization over perfection in menopause care
• Community resources and ongoing support

Head to menopause nutritionist.ca to learn more about my one-to-one and group coaching programs, free resources, and where to get your copy of Eat to Thrive during menopause.

Isn’t it wild that you can do everything “right”-be the devoted mom, caregiver, spouse, or friend, and yet still feel like you’ve lost touch with the “real” you? That’s where our conversation with writer, speaker, and coach Jen Butler begins. It’s a candid look at how midlife cracks open our default scripts around food, alcohol, and identity, and how choosing peace can be much more fulfilling than trying to take up less space in the world.

Jen shares her early entry into diet culture, the moment a nutritionist prescribed restriction that stole her period and presence, and the turning point when she stopped paying for being smaller with health and joy. We also talk about alcohol as a coping mechanism, how honesty sparked change, and why removing the fog made room for deeper work: food freedom, identity beyond motherhood, and creative ambition.

Now, as a coach and author of Mom Rediscovered, Jen invites women to reclaim their space and redefine midlife on their own terms. If you’re ready to trade perfection for presence and roles for a richer identity, this conversation will resonate.

Feeling lost in a sea of conflicting advice about autoimmune disease? It can be especially tricky during perimenopause and menopause when hormones throw everything off. Dr. Alison Danby, a naturopathic doctor who specializes in autoimmune health, is here to break it all down with clear, science-backed guidance that feels like a sigh of relief.

What you won’t hear is any ideas about cutting out gluten, dairy, or sugar, or following strict AIP protocols. Dr. Danby explains why those extreme diets can actually hurt your gut and why a Mediterranean-style approach supports your microbiome, heart, bones, and overall wellbeing, without the stress.

We also chat about the surprising role of stress in triggering autoimmune flares and how simple things like better sleep, gentle movement, and stress management can be more powerful than complicated food rules.

Whether you’re just starting to figure out your autoimmune journey or have been managing it for years, this episode gives you permission to relax around food and focus on what really helps your body heal.

“How could I, an educated scientist married to a doctor, not know this was happening to me?” At 45, Béatrice Séguin was floored to realize she was already in menopause, after years of missing the signs.

In this honest and energetic story session, Béatrice shares how that wake-up call turned her into a menopause advocate and led to her podcast This Time of the Month (TTOM). We talk about why so many women are caught off guard, how old research still shapes today’s care, and the new pressure to “do menopause right” with the perfect diet, supplements, or hormones.

But there’s good news. We encourage trying what works for you! From hormone therapy and vaginal estrogen to lifestyle shifts and antidepressants, this episode opens up the full menu of options.

Most importantly, it’s a reminder you don’t have to figure this out alone. Whether you’re in perimenopause, menopause, or supporting a friend, this conversation brings validation, real talk, and community to the midlife transition.

From hot flashes and sleep struggles to surprising cognitive strengths we gain in menopause, she shares what’s happening inside the brain, as well as how to support it through the transition.

You’ll walk away with science-backed strategies, a fresh perspective on midlife cognition, and maybe even a laugh or two (yes, we talk creatine and the importance of laughing at ourselves in this season). This week’s episode is extra special for TWO reasons! For one, we are kicking off Season 6, and my sister Friedel is interviewing me! We’re diving into my new book, Eat to Thrive During Menopause, and why I felt called to write it after my own surprising start to perimenopause at 37.

Instead of talking about what to cut out, I share why I focus on what to add, such as fiber, phytoestrogens, and carbs that actually satisfy. We also bust some common menopause myths and talk about how intuitive eating can help you feel at peace with food in this season of life.

Friedel shares some of her favourite recipes from the book (pumpkin flax muffins, anyone?) along with some of her behind-the-scenes memories of me while I was writing it!

Join us for a sweet conversation about food, midlife, and finding joy in this season of life.

What if menopause wasn’t something to endure, but something to embrace? After asking my Instagram community about the unexpected gifts of midlife, their answers revealed just how liberating this season can be. From deeper friendships and renewed creativity to freedom from dieting and people-pleasing, their stories echoed a powerful shift, and one rooted in self-awareness, strength, and permission to live more authentically.

These insights inspired my new book, Eat to Thrive During Menopause, which blends intuitive eating with symptom-supportive nutrition. No tracking, no rules, just nourishment. Even though this is the Season 5 finale, this episode invites you to see menopause not as an ending, but as a new beginning.

Have you ever hesitated to open up with other women because you feared judgment, competition, or being labeled as “too much”? If this hits home, I’ve got good news: you are not the problem.

In this episode, author and comedian Tova Leigh shares stories from her new book Good Girls Gossip and explains why reclaiming gossip, as deep, truth-sharing connection among women, is revolutionary. We talk about letting go of the “good girl” roles we’ve outgrown and what it means to live more authentically in midlife.

Tova introduces her powerful “and also” mindset, which allows space to be both messy and wise, uncomfortable and growing. It’s a simple shift that invites freedom from perfection and black-and-white thinking.

This is a conversation about real talk, shared wisdom, and the beauty of being witnessed by women who see you as you really are.

In this episode, I sat down to chat with our very own Joyful Movement Coordinator in the Midlife Feast. At 49, Christine received an ADHD diagnosis after years of masking. She shares how perimenopause brought long-overlooked symptoms into focus.

We unpack how midlife hormonal shifts can amplify ADHD traits and why rigid fitness plans rarely work for neurodivergent brains. As a movement coach, Christine offers a refreshing approach to movement in trading consistency for persistence, flexibility, and self-compassion.

We also bust the motivation myth and share simple mindset shifts that make movement feel doable, even on low-energy days.

If traditional routines haven’t worked for you, Christine’s approach might be the reset you’ve been looking for. And if you love what you hear, don’t forget she shares more inside The Midlife Feast community, including videos and tips for all fitness levels.

Standing in your closet thinking, "Nothing fits anymore?" It’s not the best feeling, but can I let you in on something? You don’t have to hold onto your “lose weight wardrobe”. In this encouraging conversation, stylist Dacy Gillespie helps us reframe how we think about style in midlife, especially when our bodies, styles, and preferences have changed.

Together, we explore why comfort isn’t “giving up,” how style can help you reconnect with who you are now, and why that “lose weight wardrobe” may be doing more harm than good. You’ll also get a big dose of validation: most clothes aren’t made to fit you—and that’s a design flaw, not a personal one.

If getting dressed has felt frustrating or disconnected lately, this episode offers a refreshing new lens: style as self-care, self-expression, and an invitation to show up for yourself just as you are today.

In this episode, I get to bring you a very special guest, someone whose work has transformed my whole practice, and who has been helping people heal their relationship with food and their bodies through intuitive eating for three decades!

In this conversation, Intuitive Eating co-founder Evelyn Tribole shares why this compassionate, research-backed framework is more relevant than ever—especially during menopause.

We explore how symptoms like sleep disruption can throw off hunger cues, why decades of dieting create a fear of "losing control," and how that fear is actually your body trying to protect you. Evelyn breaks down the biology behind these patterns and offers a deeply freeing perspective for anyone tired of blaming themselves.

You'll also hear why intuitive eating works even with midlife health conditions, and how shifting from restriction to "nutrition by addition" can make food feel joyful again. Most of all, this episode is an invitation to stop fighting your body—and start finding what truly lights you up.

Feeling hungry all the time? Or do you feel like fullness just doesn’t land the way it used to? You’re not imagining things—and it’s not about discipline either. Hormonal changes in menopause can change how you experience hunger, and that can be disorienting.

In this episode, we answer a listener’s honest question about feeling constantly hungry, and explore how biology, behavior, and hormones all intersect. We break down the three types of hunger—physical, emotional, and taste—and why food noise can feel especially loud right now.

You’ll hear how estrogen impacts fullness signals, how sleep and brain energy play a role, and most importantly, how to work with your changing body, not against it. We share ways to build satisfying meals, spot emotional hunger with compassion, and reconnect with your body's wisdom.

This one’s for anyone in or around menopause who’s ready to stop fighting hunger—and start listening to it.

Why are we SO drained in midlife? Dr. Sarah Vandeboncoeur returns to unpack the exhaustion so many women feel—not just from perimenopause, but from decades of overgiving.

Most of us enter this phase already running on empty, juggling work, family, and endless to-dos. Add hormonal shifts, and let’s be honest- something has to give. That irritability and bone-deep fatigue? They’re signals, not flaws.

We break down the "energy budget"—because just like money, energy isn’t unlimited. Sarah shares practical ways to escape the exhaustion trap: setting one true priority, doing daily "capacity checks," and sprinkling joy into your day before burnout hits.

If you’re caught in the cycle of perfectionism and depletion, this episode offers both relief and a way forward. It’s time to reclaim your energy for what truly matters.

Did you know science shows that mindfulness can do more than just help you relax? It can improve sleep, reduce anxiety, and might even slow brain aging? That’s more than just symptom relief!

Diana Winston, director of UCLA Mindful, joins me to explore how meditation can support your menopause experience. She makes mindfulness accessible for everyone, even those who feel too busy or think it’s not for them.

Diana shares practical tips for beginners, like starting with just five minutes a day using free apps like UCLA Mindful, or the Happier app, which has just released a new mindful guide to menopause. She also introduces the simple STOP technique to help ease anxiety and break the cycle of rumination.

Instead of viewing menopause as a loss, meditation can help reframe this season as an opportunity for greater authenticity, power, and freedom. Why not start here?

After years of dieting, the advice to "eat when you’re hungry, stop when you’re full" can feel frustrating and oversimplified-especially if you’ve been trying to “get” intuitive eating This week, fellow intuitive eating dietitian Julie Duffy Dillon joins me to help us understand some of the common roadblocks that keep us “stuck" and why reconnecting with your body’s natural cues takes patience. Most importantly, that healing is possible at any age, size, or health condition.

We explore why dieting’s pull is so strong and why there’s so much value in naming why diets have given you a spark of feeling hopeful or empowered.

With intuitive eating, weight gain can feel like failure, but Julie reminds us it's normal for our bodies to change — and why accepting this is key to healing and feeling like you’re making progress. Julie also shares insights from her new book, Find Your Food Voice, and encourages us to let go of diet culture so we can focus on healing from the trauma it’s caused.

If you feel stuck, this conversation is a powerful reminder that you are not the problem in the intuitive eating equation!

I'm celebrating a huge personal milestone—10 years of embracing intuitive eating and un-dieting—and I’d love for you to join me as I look back on my journey.

In this episode, I’m sharing what it’s really been like to navigate the ups and downs of perimenopause while also unlearning the harmful messages of diet culture. I'll explain why intuitive eating is more than just another set of rules. It’s a mindset shift that can free you from the exhausting cycle of diets and body shame (but one that takes practice and lots of self-compassion!)

I’ll also share what I’ve learned about body neutrality—what it means to feel good in your body without the pressure to love every part of it, and why the messy middle of intuitive eating (the “screw it” phase) can actually be a valuable part of healing.

Whether you're just starting to rethink your relationship with food or feel stuck in the messy middle, I hope my story offers encouragement and solidarity.

We dive into the myths surrounding weight, BMI, and body composition, especially for women in midlife and beyond. Did you know that October is ADHD awareness month? It is! 🙌🏽

In this story session, I invited community member Jenny to share her ADHD story with us, from her childhood diagnosis in 1984 to the challenges she’s faced in perimenopause. She opens up about the brain fog, anxiety, and her decision to shift away from traditional stimulant medications towards practices like yoga and hiking for relief. I loved hearing her articulate her insights into the unique relationship between ADHD and intuitive eating.

We explore the hurdles of recognizing hunger and fullness cues, as well as Jenny's practical approach to gentle nutrition—focusing on easy, low-effort meal prep. She also talks about the power of community, self-compassion, and how she manages daily life with ADHD using simple strategies like post-its and physical activity. This episode is a comforting and empowering listen for anyone navigating ADHD in midlife.

Can you imagine a world where food choices are driven by joy, not fear? Today I’m joined by non-diet, weight-inclusive dietitian Abbie Attwood to explore the three most common roadblocks to intuitive eating. We dive into the "messy middle," that tricky space where you’ve left behind diet culture but haven’t yet found your sweet spot with your eating habits.

These common hiccups include:

➡️ the impact of fear-based nutrition messaging
➡️ the discomfort of navigating a world without food rules and
➡️ managing feedback from those who don’t understand your decision to step away from dieting

Perhaps most importantly, we highlight the critical role of self-compassion in moving past these roadblocks. Whether you’re struggling with emotional triggers around food or looking for simple ways to make food decisions, this episode will help you move closer to food freedom and body acceptance.

We dive into the genitourinary syndrome of menopause, hormonal changes, and whether those popular biofeedback devices really work. Plus, we both advocate for the benefits of pelvic floor physiotherapy as part of your health routine.

Isn’t it refreshing to hear this dieting trope “you are what you eat” turned on its head? In this episode, I had the privilege of chatting with Dr. Emma Beckett, an Australian nutrition scientist and the brilliant mind behind You Are More Than What You Eat. Dr. Beckett’s book dives into the science of eating behaviors, but she makes it all so relatable and easy to understand.

We’re cutting through the noise and addressing why dietary myths and labels like “good” or “bad” can mess with our health and our relationship with food. Dr. Beckett’s approach is all about enjoying your food without stressing over perfection, embracing a flexible and intuitive eating style that actually makes food easy and fun.

Is it just me, or is the “fight menopause” messaging starting to feel a bit stale? Yes, midlife 100% comes with its challenges (many of which we’ll tackle together in Season 5 with the help of some fantastic experts and guests).

But to kick off this season, I wanted to share three reasons why I think life post-menopause is pretty awesome. My favorite being that midlife is this incredible opportunity to transform your relationship with food and your body.

I’ll share how we can learn to work with our bodies rather than fighting them. Join us as we discuss how movement and food—focused on how it makes us feel, not how we look—can make the menopause journey more empowering and even fun.

Welcome to this week's episode of the Midlife Feast, our season four finale! 🎉 For this special episode, I invited my sister, Friedel to join me. We dive into our shared experiences and differences, especially around menopause. While I went through early menopause, my sister, at 46, is just starting perimenopause. Her journey this past year reflects what many go through, wondering, "Is this perimenopause, or am I going crazy?"

Join us as we chat about the five key things she's learned and wished she had known. We laughed a lot during this episode and think you will too.

See you in September 2024 for Season 5 of the podcast!

Welcome to another episode of the Midlife Feast! Today, we're diving into my favorite topic: intuitive eating and breaking free from the dieting cycle. Joining us is the incredible Dr. Alexis Conason, a US-based psychologist and author of Diet-Free Revolution.

We're not just scratching the surface here; we're exploring the behavioral and emotional aspects of intuitive eating. Dr. Conason’s approach, woven beautifully with storytelling, offers a fresh perspective that resonates deeply with those on the journey to reclaiming their relationship with food and their bodies.

Whether you're a seasoned dieter or just dipping your toes into this paradigm shift, this conversation reminds us that we're not alone. Dr. Conason’s insights reassure us that we're not broken, and perhaps most importantly, we’re not to blame.

Join me and parent coach Oona Hanson for a compassionate conversation about the tangled relationship between diet culture, body image, and family dynamics. Drawing from both professional expertise and personal journey through eating disorder recovery, Oona offers helpful insights into the subtle ways language shapes our beliefs about food and self-worth, and how these patterns impact the next generation.

Together, we call out why parenting in the face of eating disorders is so tricky to navigate, and why we have to prioritize understanding and advocating for early intervention over blaming ourselves. We cover fostering positive body image (including how social media plays a part) and Oona shares practical strategies for instilling positive eating habits in children, especially young athletes.

Building and maintaining new movement habits can feel daunting, especially if you don’t enjoy moving as much as you did in the past, or are learning to navigate changes to your physical abilities in midlife. But as my guest and I both agree, fitness culture has way overcomplicated what counts as success when it comes to fitness goals.

In this episode, personal trainer and nutrition coach, Michael Ulloa joins me to share his inclusive (and refreshing) perspective on fitness. We peel back the layers of industry myths, especially those that relate to us in midlife and menopause, and reveal just how achievable and personal fitness can be.

We have a great chat about the overwhelming mess of health and fitness messaging. If you’re ready to normalize making intuitive and informed decisions that prioritize body autonomy, join us! We’ll also discover what Michael type of movement packs the biggest punch for your mind and body, even if you only have eight minutes a day!

If dieting has left you flat-out exhausted mentally, physically, and emotionally, I want to assure you that you are not the problem. The problem is that diets and food rules have called the shots for decades of our lives. New diets mean new rules. More rules mean more confusion. And in midlife, we’re starting to realize that our brains and bodies are tired of trying to do more with less.

But why do you keep wanting to try another diet? And why do most healthcare professionals still recommend them? To help us unpack the many layers of the problems with dieting, I’ve invited Dr. Amy Porto to join me. She will help us understand why dieting “success” is so fleeting and why your real superpower lies in giving yourself permission to explore what hunger, satisfaction, and pleasure mean to you.

So grab a snack and fuel your mind and your body as you listen to this powerful episode!

The body acceptance and un-dieting journey is not for the faint of heart. It’s why so many people tell me they will be ready to work with me after they try this “last diet” one more time. Body image work tends to bring up more questions than answers and it takes a lot of courage to sit in all of the emotions that come with the questions.

To help us unpack the many layers of this conversation, I’ve invited nutritionist and body image coach, Steph Dodier to help us understand why our brains naturally associate being thin with being safe, why others feel threatened by people who feel at home in their larger bodies, and how to see your body as a vehicle to experience your life instead of a sign of your worth.

Steph will guide us through what it takes to rewire our brains on this topic and why the experience of being rejected can empower us to learn the strength of resilience and trusting ourselves.

In my work supporting women in midlife and menopause, there are some regular and recurring themes to the questions I get. Whether it’s a client, someone in the community, or DMs, they typically go like this:

“I don’t understand what’s wrong with me.” or “There must be something I’m missing.”

I always reassure them by saying, “I can’t tell you how common that is.”

Why is it so common? If you’re over 40, you can thank the 1980s for many of the beliefs you have about food, nutrition, and health. Having grown up in the days before the internet, we didn’t have the luxury of choosing what information we consumed. We were all fed the same messages as the pool of mainstream media was much smaller and less diverse.

In this episode, I’m going to share three beliefs that diet culture fed you and why they are likely overcomplicating your relationship with food and your body. Then I’ll give you three questions you can ask yourself if you’re ready to start un-dieting these beliefs and find a more peaceful relationship with food and your body.

When we begin to heal from all the damage diet culture has had on our growth and development, it can feel very urgent to get it “right” for our kids and learn how to keep diet culture out of our homes. While this deserves to be a top priority, it requires a lot of grace.

In this episode, nutritionist and fitness coach, Tracey Harper helps us understand why rewriting the narrative for the next generation demands that we continue healing in our relationships with food and our bodies. She will help us frame up conversations that invite young people to get curious about how they relate to their bodies, as well as how to help kids reflect on the impact that the media has on their mental health.

If you worry about the damage that’s already been done, I invite you to join us. This episode will remind you that a growth mindset is key to helping young people embrace body diversity and food neutrality.

In this special story session, Christina Testut—a kindergarten teacher and champion of body acceptance—joins us this week on The Midlife Feast to share her inspiring un-dieting journey and the lessons that quarantine taught her about embracing body diversity.

She shares why her weight-loss “success story” became unsustainable, physically, mentally, and emotionally. As a mother and educator, she recognized the urgent need to redefine beauty standards for impressionable young people and took a powerful stand by transforming her epiphany into a children's book celebrating all body shapes and sizes.

Tight pants. Bloating. IBS. Food sensitivities. If you’re one of the many people who have experienced gastrointestinal discomfort in midlife, you know how complex this issue is.

Dr. Kim Bretz ND is joining me to answer some of the most frequently asked gut health questions. She will help us understand that there’s a fair amount of confusion about our gut because we’re navigating both physical symptoms and perceptions all at once. We’ll dive into FODMAPs, why digestive diversity is so important, and why self-directed diets not only add discomfort but actually put us at risk if we don’t know when and how to reintroduce foods.

We’ll also touch on why trying to self-diagnose gut health problems can be an unexpected path to disordered eating patterns.

Diet and wellness culture do a fantastic job “shoulding” all over us, especially when it comes to the habits we put into place. This pressure does not mix well with our already strained capacity in midlife, making it necessary to ask ourselves if the habits we keep are serving us anymore. That’s why I’ve invited health coach and behavior change expert Heather Sayers Lehman to help us dive into this work.

Habits can be powerful tools, but they should be a reflection of how attuned we are to our own needs and preferences-not diet culture rules. We’ll unpack why we need to focus less on willpower and more on self-compassion. You’ll be so refreshed by the way Heather helps us approach habit change in a way that actually feels aligned and makes the ROI easy to recognize!

In addition to the emotional and physical changes that can come with midlife, have you ever felt discouraged when you realized that your relationship with your spouse or partner was having its own midlife crisis?

If so, you’re not alone, but you don’t have to stay stuck. Since we’re celebrating Valentine’s Day this week, I thought it would be the perfect time to invite relationship expert Carrie Cohen on the show to talk about why feeling disconnected in relationships and marriage in midlife can happen without us even noticing. She will let us in on why midlife is another transition for our relationship that will need plenty of communication and negotiation until both partners land in a sweet spot.

Best of all, Carrie shares some incredibly practical and powerful tools you can implement in your relationship to get the spark and connection back on the menu again!

Today we’re tackling a topic we haven’t yet devoted an entire episode to but certainly deserves one! I’ve invited Nutrition & Body Relationship Coach, Deb Benfield to help us explore the subtle but profound impact of ageism on body image in midlife. We cover so much in this one conversation including aging body liberation, what it means to carry internalized ageism, and how that intersects with disordered eating during midlife.

The episode emphasizes the importance of self-compassion, acknowledging losses, and practicing body acceptance. Deb and I get to express our excitement about this life stage, challenge societal norms, and promote a positive and fresh perspective on aging.

One of the biggest challenges of midlife is the fact that so many of us feel flat-out exhausted, even after 8 hours of sleep! That’s why I invited the Fatigue Fixer, Dr. Sarah Vadeboncoeur, ND to help us understand why this chronic exhaustion is so common but also more complex than just having low iron levels.

Sarah will share the four areas you need to explore to discover what's zapping your energy these days. We’ll also dive into why ”meno-rage” could actually be a gift and why we need to allocate more time each day to meet our own needs for nutrition, movement, rest, and pleasure.

Everyone comes from somewhere. It’s a simple, perhaps obvious statement, but one that is more relevant than we might realize. In this episode, I’m joined by psychologist, speaker, and author, Dr. Jody Carrington. Jody believes that finding the courage and the safe places to tell our stories is what we need most as we navigate a distracted and disconnected world.

While I haven’t known Jody for long, we quickly connected over the bathing suit story she shared on her podcast (what she calls the connector of all stories). I hope that by sharing some of these relatable battles with body image, you’ll realize you’re not alone. Jody will also talk about two of the biggest tools for recovery in moments like these: gratitude and agency.

You have a story too, and it needs to be told. Join us if you are craving friendships where we can trade in comparison for the confidence to finally take up space.

If the pressure from wellness culture leaves you feeling fearful and anxious because of its unattainable standards, it's probably safe to say that it's not truly promoting well-being. And if you've invested time, money, or energy in the myths and promises of wellness culture, you probably haven't seen much ROI on those either.

In this episode, I’m kicking off 2024 with a guest who needs little introduction-Registered Dietitian and author of The Wellness Trap, Christy Harrison. We are taking a deep dive into why clean eating became so trendy (and dangerous), why we are drawn to the fear-based messaging of wellness culture, as well as why it’s so irrelevant to such a large population of the world.

If you’ve been craving an approach to food and body image that is more gentle, nuanced and includes priorities like mental health, community, and the understanding of socioeconomic influences on health disparities, you won’t want to miss this episode!

You know the overwhelming and even sometimes paralyzing feelings you battle when you catch a glimpse of yourself in the mirror or a photo? It’s when the image we see in front of us doesn’t match the image in our brain. That’s body grief.

In this episode, I’ve invited Registered Dietitian, Amanda Mittman to tackle this subject with me. We’re calling out why body grief has so many layers you might not be aware of, and why it becomes even more complex when the curve balls of perimenopause and aging are added to the mix. While there is a lot to process, you’ll be encouraged to know that you don’t have to stay stuck here either. Amanda shares some incredibly practical strategies for how to move through the pain and into body acceptance, reminding us why it’s just the opposite of just “giving up”.

Do you ever have days where you start out eating fat-free for breakfast, go vegan for lunch, and end up eating keto for dinner? Food rules are so appealing and yet so confusing. The problem is that there’s no “best” diet and they all have the same predictable result.

In this episode, I’m joined by Dr. Sylvi Martin who will help us expose why so many elements of wellness culture are getting in the way of your ability to thrive and have a normal relationship with food. We’ll also talk about why where you get your information matters as well as why you need to focus on adding foods to your plate instead of trying to keep them off the menu.

In this episode, I invite you to listen as I sit down with Midlife Feast Community member, Laura, a veteran dieter who's now embracing life as an intuitive eater. Laura generously shares her 40-year dieting journey, beginning at age 11, and why it’s so easy to buy into the lie that if you’re not seeing results on a diet, well, you simply aren’t trying hard enough.

We debunk common myths like equating intuitive eating with “giving up” and explaining how it can truly nourish your soul and heart. Laura opens up about her previous restrictive eating habits, and how she now seeks balanced meals that satisfy more than just the palate. We discuss the liberating feeling of giving yourself permission to enjoy food, and how even dining out and treats can fit into a healthy relationship with food.

Dr. Dodell emphasizes that diabetes doesn't discriminate based on body size. He advocates for a personalized, intuitive approach to eating, highlighting the importance of listening to your body. We highlight the fact that diabetes can bring emotional challenges, including stigma around medication and feeling like you've failed if diet and exercise alone don't cut it.

So, if you or someone you know is dealing with diabetes, regardless of body size, this episode offers a reassuring and hopeful perspective. You're not alone in this journey!

When I did an open call in our Midlife Feast Community for anyone who was willing to do a story session, I was thrilled when long-time member Melissa jumped at the chance to share her story. She shares how she has transitioned from lifetime member of Weight Watchers and all the tracking, measuring, and counting that came with it, to enjoying the freedom of being an intuitive eater.

Melissa also shares her hard-earned wisdom of why we can’t rush the process of un-dieting and why it requires practicing self-compassion at every step. She shares why how she can enjoy a whole piece of cake (instead of 4 bites for 4 points) and she shares the sheer delight she finds in indulging in real coffee creamer each morning.

When you hear the word “exercise”, what’s the very next word that comes to mind? Pain? Sweat? No thanks? It’s incredibly common to make these associations with movement because we’ve been conditioned to believe that unless we are miserable, it doesn’t count.

In this episode, I’m talking with weight-inclusive fitness trainer, Jamie Carbaugh who will share why she is so passionate about choosing movement for more-of everything! Whether it’s more flexibility, better sleep, or dance parties, Jamie helps her clients meet their goals by ditching rigid exercise ideas and fully surrendering to our body’s intuitive desire to play.

When it comes to the diabetes conversation, have you ever felt like common sense was the missing ingredient? If so, you’re 100% correct. The fear-based messaging like “you’re just one donut away from diabetes” indicates how out of control it’s become. What I want you to walk away with is knowing that you can make peace with food, even with diabetes- and one of the best ways to do that is through adopting an intuitive eating approach.

To help us tackle this topic, I’ve invited Danielle Bublitz, a weight-neutral registered dietitian who not only specializes in supporting clients with all different types of diabetes but has also lived with diabetes herself since she was a teenager. Danielle will help us debunk some of the most harmful myths about diabetes and help us understand why having diabetes is not your fault.

Are you convinced that with your welcome to midlife and menopause letter, you’re also doomed to develop insulin resistance? It’s not much different from believing that every pregnant woman will also develop gestational diabetes. Is it possible? Sure. Does it happen to everyone? Definitely not.

In this episode, I’ve invited Registered Dietitian, Val Schonberg back on the show to help challenge some of the most common assumptions about insulin resistance for women in menopause. Your body composition can change significantly in menopause, but it doesn’t automatically mean you’ve developed insulin resistance. In most cases, it just means you’re human. Join us as we celebrate normalizing bodies of all shapes and sizes and building boring balanced plates!

Wondering why in the world would a naturopathic doctor and dietitian would suggest that food is not medicine. It’s a great question and one I wanted to tackle for the last episode of season 3. There’s no doubt about it-food does incredible things for our bodies. It fuels, supports, and nourishes us every day. But here’s a little secret: broccoli alone can’t save your life. Food is just food!

The pressure we feel to choose only the most “perfect” foods often ends up taking so much of our time and attention in an already demanding season of life. In this episode, I’ll be sharing 5 ways you can lower the bar to improve your health. I would love to know which one takes the pressure off your relationship with food the most!

I’ve already got so much in store for you for Season 4, so take a minute to catch up on any episodes you’ve missed and I’ll meet you back here in September!

Midlife is the ultimate “messy middle”, isn’t it? But when we take time to listen to our bodies, get comfortable with not having control, and surround ourselves with authentic community, there are a lot of gifts to discover in this season too! In this episode, I’ve invited Ann Douglas, the author of Navigating the Messy Middle, a book that brilliantly unpacks the challenges and experiences of women in midlife, especially those of us who are parenting teens at the same time!

Part of what makes this middle so messy is that it’s easy to feel like you’re always dropping a ball, between juggling the demands of caretaking, parenting, maintaining a career, or even dodging fear-based media around health and wellness. In this episode, we talk about these familiar challenges and hopefully provide you with a bit of reassurance that you’re not alone, and it will get better. But here’s what I hope will be your #1 takeaway: life is far from over. Midlife is the chance to become your own expert in self-compassion, expression, growth, and trying on new hobbies, all for the joy of it!

**Have you ever noticed that as you embrace midlife, you discover this newfound ability to stop doing all the things that just don’t serve you anymore? Isn’t it fantastic? My guest today Kate Codrington is joining me to help us understand that this fresh confidence and freedom has a name, and is also known as the autumn of perimenopause.

But you might be more familiar with the experience of “meno-rage”, where your emotions feel completely out of control which leads us to explode and feel overwhelmed by the fallout. Kate helps us understand that this is an invitation to become aware of the gap between what you need, and what you’ve received at this point in life. When we can identify what we’re missing, we’re better able to find ways to express and use this energy for good and invite more pleasure into our lives daily!

Today I have a very special treat for you in this Q&A session with Registered Dietitian Amanda Bullat, who (spoiler alert) I am thrilled to announce will be joining us as a regular expert resource in the Midlife Feast community very soon!

In this episode, we tackle three of the most-asked questions about un-dieting in midlife. The answers to these questions are helpful for anyone who has considered intuitive eating before but maybe got bogged down by the most common challenges and misconceptions related to un-dieting.

We talk about how tempting it is to sprinkle in formerly “successful” dieting strategies while you learn to become an intuitive eater, as well as how to challenge the most common fears that pop up when you let go of tracking, measuring, and dieting.

If listening to this episode prompts more questions about starting your intuitive eating journey, make sure to register for the Intuitive Eating Foundations Course which is my free gift to you for the month of June!

If you’re navigating any stage of midlife right now, there’s a good chance wellness culture has made an impact on your relationship with food. While the principles of wellness culture tote the appearance of supporting your physical health, the moralization of food can wreak havoc on your mental health by heaping on unnecessary guilt and shame.

In this Story Session episode, a Midlife Feast Community Member joins me to share her journey of un-dieting from wellness culture. She’s learned the importance of letting go of restrictive food rules, how to question societal expectations, and how to prioritize a more balanced sense of well-being.

When we discover the courage to challenge wellness culture's influence in our lives, we can develop a more sustainable relationship with food. And the real payoff is that we have more room for self-discovery and creativity in midlife-two key ingredients for making midlife that much sweeter.

While you may be 1000% sure that spending the rest of your life on a diet is NOT the life for you…have you ever found yourself thinking that the path to becoming an intuitive eater doesn’t feel all that intuitive? If so, welcome! This episode if for you.

The good news is that you are not alone! How do I know? Because of the messages I regularly get from women who are all in what I call the “messy middle” on the road to intuitive eating. Yes, intuitive eating begins with understanding how to stay in tune with your body’s hunger and fullness cues. But it often feels overwhelming as you learn to navigate all of the other reasons we eat. So in this episode, I'll help you sort through three common speed bumps that can bring your intuitive eating journey to a screeching halt. Come listen and see if these reasons are keeping you stuck too.

But what I’m most excited to share with you in this episode is that for the month of June, you can get one week of 100% free access to my Intuitive Eating Beginner’s Course.

If movement had zero impact on your body size, would you still choose to move? If the answer is no, then I encourage you to join me and Christine Chessman in this episode to learn why joyful movement is key to making movement sustainable in midlife and beyond.

If you’ve started an intuitive eating journey, it is not uncommon to feel the desire to break up with your usual workout routine too. In honor of Osteoporosis Awareness Month,  I’ve invited movement educator Rebekah Rotstein to shed light on the topic of bone health. It’s incredibly common to avoid thinking about the strength of our bones until later in life, which might be too late if your goal is to be resilient and independent as you age. Rebekah shares the many factors we need to understand about bone health and what screenings we need to ask for starting in perimenopause if we haven’t already.

If you’ve begun your menopause journey, you’ve probably had to deal with hot flashes by now. When they first start, they can certainly take you by surprise, especially since the experience of them can vary a lot from person to person. But however they show up, they are always uncomfortable and disruptive.

In this episode, I’m going to break down what is happening in your body (more specifically in your brain) when hot flashes strike. I’ll also share what foods you might be eating or drinking that can impact how often you have them, as well as simple (and tasty) foods you can eat to support the rollercoaster of hormone changes in this age and stage of life

When you’re looking for a medical provider in midlife, finding someone who iscommitted to listening, staying curious, and staying up to date on research are just some of the top priorities. But when you can find a woman who has some skin in the midlife game, well, many times you’ve hit the jackpot.

My guest on today’s Story Session is health coach and dietitian, Tracy Kelly. She’s sharing her story about how her practice has been transformed as a result of having recently started perimenopause. As universal as the symptoms of menopause can be, each of us has a story to tell. This episode will inspire you to lean into your experience, ask more questions, and discover how to live authentically in what likely feels like someone else’s body on a lot of days.

You probably already know that protecting our bones in midlife and beyond is a top priority. The problem is that like much of the health information we’re exposed to it doesn’t always translate into practical how-to strategies. Instead, it can induce a lot of fear about getting an osteoporosis diagnosis, also known as the “silent disease” since there are so few outward signs and symptoms.

In this episode, I’m joined for a second time by my friend Niamh Daly who will help us understand what is really happening to our bones in post-menopause. She will also help us understand why focusing on movement, balance, and posture are key to slowing bone loss.

You’ll also walk away from this episode with examples of simple low-impact exercises you can do anywhere throughout your day. It’s high time to challenge the idea that movement only happens once a day in concentrated bursts. Your bones will thank you when you do!

What memories do you have of diet culture as you were growing up? If you’re like many parents in our community, there’s a good chance you’d like to spare your children from these experiences altogether. That’s why I invited Registered Dietitian and author of Diet-Proof Your Daughter, Amelia Sherry to the podcast. We take a deep dive into understanding what’s at the root of our desire for our kids to be healthy and have a healthy relationship with food.

Even if you’ve worked hard to keep diet culture out of your house, there are so many ways our kids can still feel pressured to fit into certain body shape expectations. Amelia will share some helpful questions you can ask your kids in order to challenge common examples of diet, food, and health misinformation. We will also talk about ways to help our kids feel welcome to try, enjoy, and have access to all kinds of food (even sugar) so that they learn how their bodies can communicate with them. If you’re curious about raising intuitive eaters, this episode is a perfect place to start!

While you would probably guess that the average age of women going through menopause is between 51-52, you might not know that approximately 1% of women go through menopause prematurely before age 40. In today’s story session, I am joined by Midlife Feast Community member, Jen, who is sharing her experience of going through Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI).

It’s easy to imagine how disruptive and confusing it would be to experience symptoms like hot flashes and long gaps between periods at the age of 31. You’ll discover how Jen put the pieces together pre-diagnosis and learned the best ways to support her health post-diagnosis, which included joining The Midlife Feast Community!

Midlife can be one of the most overwhelming seasons of life. It honestly feels like everything you are responsible for is a non-negotiable. But if you’re feeling like everything in your mind and body is pointing towards burnout, then something has to give- how do choose what to say no to?

In this episode, I’ve invited my friend and Burnout and Alcohol Coach Wendy McCallum back on the show to walk us through how to start making these kinds of tough decisions in midlife. What I love about Wendy is that her advice is so practical and empowers you to take action on what you want most starting today, not tomorrow.

So if you’re searching for ways to show up more intentionally for yourself and everyone around you, do whatever you have to do to let a ball drop for the next thirty minutes and tune into this episode. If you’re burnt out on dieting, you’re probably interested in exploring a concept we talk about a lot around here: gentle nutrition. While most people are eager to get to the “good part” when learning to eat intuitively, gentle nutrition is one of the last steps of the journey of intuitive eating. Why? Because we have to un-do a lot of the default programming leftover from years of dieting and diet culture.

In this episode, I’ve invited fellow non-diet dietitian Rachael Hartley on the show to take a deep dive into understanding gentle nutrition- including who it’s for, how to apply it, and the most common hiccups that people experience along the way. Join us if you’re ready to examine your relationship with food!

While you may have expected many of the physical symptoms of menopause, the one that might really take you by surprise is brain fog. If you find daily tasks a real slog, you’re struggling to focus, or just forgetful in ways you would have never dreamed possible-know that this is a very common midlife experience. But what is really going on and is there anything we can do to better support our brains in this season?

In this episode, I’ll share how hormones are the culprits (yet again) and the good news that brain fog won’t last forever! While what you eat won’t make the brain fog totally disappear, there are several things that you can do to support your brain, which I’ll share too. I’ll also let you in on one of the sneaky reasons that brain fog intensifies-and it’s one I bet you haven’t considered!

When it comes to movement and exercise, how do you define what “counts”? Are you tempted to think that exercise has to be miserable if it’s going to have an impact? If so, you’re definitely not alone, and today’s conversation is just for you.

Join me and my return guest, Dr. Maria Luque, as we take a deep dive into understanding the reasons we have come to believe that the only legitimate forms of exercise must feel like pure torture.

We’ll also discuss why most people mistakenly make body change their motivation for working out, and how staying stuck in that mindset may be hurting your efforts to work on your body image. If that sounds familiar, it’s time to refocus your energy and your efforts. Then you can start making sure that having fun is your number requirement for getting - and staying active.
Please note there were some volume challenges due to unstable wifi during recording, but this conversation was full of so many important takeaways, I couldn't keep it from you!

Rise and grind. No pain, no gain. You snooze, you lose. The overuse of phrases like these is why we’re so damn tired. Rest is not a reward for productivity. It’s a need, and it’s critical for us to function.

While rest is 100 % necessary, discovering what rest means to us personally can be challenging. That’s why I’ve invited psychologist, author, and expert in self-care and rest, Suzy Reading to the show. She will help us explore why we struggle with rest and how doing it well helps us get in tune with our values. Listen and take a close look at your relationship with rest. Then let’s all commit to being underachievers, shall we?

Here she has thoughtfully curated stories of women who had the courage to trade diet culture’s empty promises of happiness for a more peaceful and fulfilling path.

One of the biggest ways the health and wellness industry has failed us is by continuing to promote this idea that one-size-fits-all. Join us to discover more about why the problem is not you. Your story is just still unfolding and midlife is the perfect time to discover peace and fulfillment in your relationship with food and your body.

As many of you already know since I shared it on Instagram, I  recently celebrated my 1-year menoversary. It’s officially been one year since my last period, which also means I’m now in post-menopause. Having taken the time to journal and track this journey, I was able to compile a lot of information and compile a list of 8 things I wish someone had shared with me before perimenopause started.

Being part of the “lucky” 20% of women who start perimenopause before 40, I wanted to let you in on what you should look for things you can do to support your body, and even the surprising things you can look forward to!

I hope this will really fill in any gaps or unanswered questions about this stage of life that you might still have. If you were one of the many women who reached out in response to sharing my story, thank you so much for your encouragement, your questions, and for sharing your own stories. Let’s keep the conversation going!

Midlife is often when the toll of a decade (or more) of time spent trying to lose weight through dieting sets in. And what follows is a new sense of panic, driven by the idea that if you haven’t been able to get comfortable in your own skin by now, time is running out. And as new research suggests, it’s this body dissatisfaction that puts many women at risk of developing eating disorders later in life.

In this episode, I’ve invited Val Schonberg, RD to expose the roots of eating disorders in midlife and why so few people, including the medical community, are noticing how widespread this struggle is for women in perimenopause and menopause. Join us as we talk about why it’s so easy to hide an eating disorder, how we can unintentionally encourage them, and how to identify more of what we can control without compromising our health.

You are not broken. Can I say it -maybe shout it again? We’ve just all been silently suffering and floundering alone when it comes to reproductive health in menopause. Thankfully doctors like my guest today, author Dr. Kelly Casperson have decided enough is enough. It’s time to tell the truth.

In this conversation, we’ll dive into the impact of marketed perfection on this season of life, why sexual health changes in midlife, and the difference between sexual desire versus arousal. We also unpack the overwhelming amount of misinformation around taking hormones and why they could be the missing ingredient for several aspects of our overall wellness.

When you know better, you do better. And if you're like many of the women in midlife I talk to, your desire to move away from diet culture may be in part motivated by your desire to change things for the next generation...I know mine was.

But getting diet culture out of the house means not only changing our behaviour, but also the language we use to describe food, bodies, and even health in general.

In this episode, dietitian Jenn Messina RD helps us understand why so many of us were programmed into diet culture from a young age, how to go back and repair when you say something you don't mean, and even how to talk to other family members when diet talk is the uninvited guest at the table.

As I get ready to mark my 1-year meno-versary, I reflect on some of the ways that our generation's experience of menopause is different than that of our mothers and grandmothers, including how we talk about it, how we treat it, and how we're helping women thrive in their second season.

But, I also talk about what we still need to work on (in a big way) and what I think is the biggest "missing ingredient" in midlife.

Iron deficiency is by far the most common nutrient deficiency among women, but the chances of being low in this VIP mineral increase in perimenopause. And as Maryann Jacobsen RD and I discuss, you don't have to be clinically anemic to feel the effects of low iron. Did you know that globally, cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death in women? Research suggests that 1 out of 2 women don't, and this conversation with Dr. Alex Verge ND about cholesterol, heart health, and menopause is full of things women need to know as they go through the menopause transition. We discuss myths about cholesterol, the role of diet vs genetics, and why dietary dogma often gets in the way of making changes that stick.

Dr. Alexandra Verge is a naturopathic doctor who loves talking about heart health. In her 20 years of clinical work, her focus has shifted from general practice to issues more commonly experienced by people as they age; arthritis, diabetes, osteoporosis, and, in particular, cardiovascular disease. In fact, in recent years, Alex would say that the subject has, well, captured her heart. This week's episode is a story session about Lindsay's experience of going into menopause at 42, and what she'd like others to know about her experience.

While perimenopause is often missed, or misdiagnosed for several years, it's even more likely to be missed for women who go into menopause early before the age of 45.

And for women who stop having periods earlier than expected, it's important to have a hormone-savvy practitioner on their team to help them manage the long-term risks of being without estrogen for longer than expected.

Maggie Landes is a board-certified physician, public health nutritionist, and anti-diet wellness expert. Her dual-mission is focused on not just helping women in midlife escape the grips of diet culture and recover from their lifelong turbulent relationship with food, but Maggie, in her Pro2Pro services, supports other health professionals to participate in, and promote, a weight-neutral approach to practice.

She is also the creator and host of “The Eatfluencer Podcast” where she and her guests unpack all the issues related to constructing a healthy, complete, and high-quality life unlimited by the oppression of diet culture.

We've all heard the advice about strength training in midlife and menopause, but not everyone knows why it's so important, or how to create a relationship with strength training that fits into your life.

And like most things related to exercise, the conversation around strength training often gets caught up in talk about metabolism and weight, leaving many women feeling like they're doing something wrong if it's "not working".

So I love the conversation that I have with Dr. Maria Luque because we talk about what strength training actually is, why it's important to maintain muscle in midlife, how much and how often we should be incorporating strength-focused movement, and how to avoid the pitfalls of "all or nothing" thinking.

Dr. Maria Luque is a fitness expert, health science professor, menopause nerd, and busy mother passionate about sharing knowledge and helping women lead healthier, happier lives. She's the creator of Fitness in Menopause, a company dedicated to helping women navigate the challenges and rewards of menopause. This week's podcast is a bit different than most of the "story sessions" I've done before. Like me, Crystal was bitten by the midlife creativity bug and she wants to inspire you to "start anywhere" too!

Crystal Garrett is a broadcaster turned podcaster and host of the Start Anywhere Podcast. She is also a communications consultant, running and motivation coach and Pilates instructor.

Crystal says she has two passions: telling stories and running. She has more than two decades of experience as a renowned broadcast journalist, TV and radio host, anchor, reporter, and producer. Crystal is also former national-class middle distance runner and former member of Canada’s national team for 10 K. She has helped coach two university teams to championship titles.

Crystal says she owes everything good in her life to running, which she discovered accidentally at age 12. Since then, running has been an ongoing source of joy, confidence, friendships, and travel opportunities. Running opened the door to her career in broadcasting. Crystal met her husband of 25 years on her university track team, and she still runs for fun with him several times per week. Occasionally, she runs with her three teenaged children. We also cover the topic of meal timing, and what you should be eating to get more zzzs.

Dr. Leigha Saunders is a naturopathic doctor obsessed with all things sleep. In her waking hours, you can find her on a mission to help other women gain energy, balance their moods, regulate hormones and sleep deep at night - particularly as they navigate hormone changes from PMS to menopause.

Her goal is to help women reclaim their rest so they can do what sets their soul on fire during the day. Leigha's ultimate mission is to help women chase their dreams, not exhaustion!

Outside of work, you can find Leigha on her paddle board, under one of her mom's homemade quilts with a coffee or tea (depending on the time of day, of course!), soaking in her hot tub or playing fire rescue with her son.

This story session shares Cherie's story of going into perimenopause in her mid-30s, earlier than anyone was expecting. Cherie shares how she felt when her medical provider dismissed her concerns, and how she's had to expand her support circle to get the help she needed to cope with meno-rage and body changes, two common early symptoms of perimenopause.

Women who enter perimenopause before 40 often feel dismissed when they bring up the possibility of hormone changes related to perimenopause, and are more likely to go years before getting treatment.

Is hormone replacement therapy (HRT) everything it's cracked up to be? Who should (and shouldn't) use it? When, and for how long? Do the benefits outweigh the risks?

These are just a few of the questions I cover in this episode of The Midlife Feast with my guest Dr. Annice Mukherjee, a consultant endocrinologist,  hormone expert, and author of 'The Complete Guide to  The Menopause'. Dr. Mkherjee brings her three decades of experience to the midlife table, along with her personal experience of going through early menopause due to a cancer diagnosis ten years ago.

We discuss why women were scared off of hormone therapy in 2001, and what has changed in the past 20 years since the results of the WHI study were published.
