The Healthiest Podcast on the Internet! We are rebranding as we get ready to launch season 4. So we are also moving our content from Appetite for Change and Drinking, Drugging and Gaming - all under our new logo! But fear not - Your favourite episodes from DNC will still be here too! Just look for the titles and you will (hopefully) find what you are looking for.We are going to be talking about all things Health Promotion - in essence giving you a little "Food For Thought"! We will be looking at stress, sleep, the impact of the built environment, how to be an HP Ambassador (even if that seems hard and somewhat terrifiying), we'll talk about inclusion and othering and why the latter needs to be avoided. Hope you will join us in the New Year as we launch season 4 - our biggest and best season yet!
Most people (probably) think they know R2MR - test number one, what do those letters and numbers stand for? If you said, "Road to Mental Readiness" you would be right. But test number two is, how many programs do they have? You'll never guess...and also, do you know they have an App?
Let's just say there is a lot more to R2MR than meets the eye, and in this episode my two amazing guests, Alanna Brochu and Mike Toms help me do a deep dive into all things R2MR.
Enjoy this fabulous conversation as we wrap up Season 9!

We know how important physical, mental and even emotional and social wellness are. But for some reason we tend to either overlook or negate how important spiritual wellness is. Capt Gabriel Snyman joins me on this episode to talk about what it is, why it's important, and how we might inadvertently already being more spiritual than we think. It's a fun and interesting look at what it means to be spiritual, how it affects everyone, and how it's an important component of making members even better soldiers. When you think about the military...what are the things that first come to mind? Deployments, postings, serving your country going to different countries to defend their sovereignty...
But what about the CANEX? This is an institution that has been around a lot longer than many people are probably aware. CANEX serves the military community in a very unique way. They are located on most Bases and Wings and provide members with the essentials from mess kit to washing machines. You can go there to get your gas and your lottery tickets, to get your post office box (depending on where you live) and in some locations they are full on grocery stores. But the people at the CANEX are also special because many of them are CAF spouses and children. So the connection to the military runs deep. In this episode, we talk all things CANEX with Asst Manager Jen McDonald and you'll be surprised to learn how many things your local CANEX can help you with!

We are taking a slightly different approach to our Nutrition Month episode, because as it always does, it follows Heart Month and so we thought it only appropriate to talk about both but with a twist. Most people think of heart disease as a man's problem, but it turns out to be one of the number one killers of women too. But because it presents differently in women, it is often overlooked or written off as anxiety...Ahem...
Anyway - we are going to look at nutrition as it pertains to both heart and bone health with a bit of a focus on women but also what everyone should be doing to protect their hearts, strengthen their bones and ensure that they maintain their muscle mass.

When we think about "Men's Health" our thoughts might go to Movember, and prostate cancer or testicular cancer, or even heart disease. It doesn't always go straight to mental health, even though the first three letters are M-E-N...
So in this episode, I'm talking with Maj Robert Reid, Psychiatrist/Flight Surgeon and Mental Health Clinical Lead here at CFB Edmonton, and we're unpacking men's mental health, in the context of the human condition and the way we have all been conditioned to believe certain things about how we should all be. This is particularly true when it comes to that thorny topic of what it means to be a man, and what it looks like to go through life either meeting that stereotype or fighting back against it, and how both have an impact on mental health.
Men's health is in trouble. While most research does exist based predominantly of men - whether regarding heart health or suicide - the reality is that more men still die by suicide at a rate of almost 3 to 1 and so we know that men remain at higher risk. Why that is multifactorial, but we need to get to the bottom of it so that they can get the help that they need to be healthy and able to meet the many, many challenges that the world is constantly throwing their way. In a way that isn't toxic, doesn't undermine their personal autonomy and isn't viewed as being in competition with women's health - of any kind. When we take care of the men - everyone benefits...so hopefully this conversation will encourage you to do the things that you can, to help you be the best version of yourself OR be there to support others in their journey.

If you have ever had a conversation with a child or a partner while driving in the car, or while doing the dishes or some other task, you will understand the value of creating a space and an opportunity to decrease the cringe factor by finding a neutral environment and one where eyeball to eyeball contact is neither required nor possible. We all need to have a place to talk about things - general things, hard things, uncomfortable things, and sometimes that is difficult to find - for all kinds of reasons. Enter gaming - not pew pew gaming necessarily but board games and we're not talking checkers either, although that could certainly work as well. No we are talking about War Hammer and Magic the Gathering. Dungeons and Dragons and things of that nature - where people with intense passions and a desire to find a place of likeminded folks to share that with gather to game and...to talk. Not on purpose, but because it is a place of common ground - multiple common grounds as it happens. This conversation with MCpl Evan Harper from 1 PPCLI is a fascinating look into how we can build community, build camaraderie and help people connect in ways that allow for so many positive things to happen. If you have always wondered or are looking for your people, then check out this episode - it's a gooder!

Post annual briefing season, here's a bit more of what we really want members to know that we can do to support them, in their units, to be the most operationally ready - but also the best versions of themselves they can be. It takes a combination of individual action and organizational responsibility to create the environment that allows all that to happen, and health promotion can be the secret sauce to get that going. We hope you take us up on our offer to come to you to help to create a plan, together, that will move CFB Edmonton to the top of the charts in 2026.
It's Christmas time...(can you hear the tune in your head)? Not sure how it's halfway through December, but here we are. We dug this one up from the archives, polished it up, turned it from an actual song (yes - it's out there somewhere on Facebook/Instagram) and turned it into a podcast worthy episode. This time there is music but Nicole and I are not singing. You're welcome. Hope you enjoy this frolicking good time counting down the 12 days of Christmas - Health Promotion style.
Here are our favourite festive snacks:
Nicole's favourite: Christmas Crack Saltine Cracker Toffee
Vanessa's favourite: Skor Bars with Ritz Crackers
Charissa's favourite: Classic Shortbread Cookies
Tolulope - declined to participate since he doesn't do the baking so thought it would be cheating...in the spirit of Christmas, I'll let that excuse slide down the chimney:)

You might not think of National Addictions Awareness Week, well, ever...but this year, it's worth thinking about because addictions are a growing concern. Prevention is key. Awareness is how that starts. What do you know about addictions? How do you feel about addictions? What impact does it have on you? Your work? Your family? Your future? It depends on where you fall on the spectrum of use - of pretty much anything. How much and how often do you drink? How much and how often if ever do you use cannabis or other drugs, prescription or otherwise? How often do you spend playing video games, or scrolling social media or gambling, or shopping or pick something that is taking away time that you used to spend doing something else? CWO Chris Thombs and I talk about addictions through the lens of anchoring it in hope - the theme of this year's NAAW campaign. We have a frank discussion about what we need to do as individuals and what supervisors can and should be doing to help those they are responsible for, be the best versions of themselves they can be. It's about building community, because that's where healing takes place. The opposite of addiction is connection, and it's up to all of us to create that. Enjoy the episode.

Do you know what and OSI is? Or what OSISS is and what it stands for? If your answer is no or you're not sure, then this episode is for you! Terri-Ann Winfield is a Peer Support Coordinator and is my guest for this first episode of Season 9! (Yes - how are we already in Season 9?!?!)
This is a great episode that talks not only about what OSISS does, but also why it's so important and how storytelling and the need for a shared space and community where healing can take place is so vital. It's something that CAF members and their family members can use and rely on, to help them when there is an OSI that is affecting them - because everyone is affected by an OSI, not just the person who has one.
Here is the list of contacts that Terri-Ann mentioned in the episode. Please reach out to any of them - take that first step and start the journey back towards wellness.

Here we are at the end of another season, albeit a slightly abbreviated one. A few fewer episodes, but those that we got in the can highlighted some amazing guests, offered helpful (we hope you think so too) insights, and showcased the incredible resources available to CAF members in Edmonton, and in most cases at many of the bases and wings across the country.
In this wrap up episode, Nicole and I talk about how to get the most out of your summer leave - however long you have and the reasons it's so important to take real advantage of the downtime when you have it. It's been busy - no one needs to tell you that, and it's unlikely to change, so making sure that you are able to recharge so you can fire on all cylinders is super important. So is making sure that when you are doing the things to help you enjoy summer, you're also taking care of some of those foundational pieces - like water and sun safety, hydration and of course we wouldn't be Health Promotion if we didn't (ever so briefly) mention nutrition!
We hope that you all have the best block leave and look forward to bringing you another season in the fall!

April is all about the Dental Hygiene and celebrating and promoting Dental Hygienists. In 'studio' for this episode we have Capt Ian Pressé who shares with us the things we need to consider when it comes to our oral health, how we need to care for our gums and teeth and the surprising history of cigarettes and the military. We talk about the difficulties of quitting, and how some members find themselves being "smokers" in the first place and the different supports that are in place to try to help those looking to kick that habit find success - whether it's a first or a seventh attempt. If you or someone you know is considering giving up smoking, whether that's cigarettes, vaping, chewing, or nicotine pouches (maybe even cannabis) this episode might indeed give you some Food for Thought:)

So that's not really the theme for this year, but you'll have to listen to hear that origin story...Join Base Dietitian Cheryl Nickurak and I as we tackle the official theme - in all its "robustness" looking at the socio-cultural aspects of food, the trends that she is seeing in her practice and hear her answers to some "questions from the field". Nutrition is about so much more than just food and this conversation considers just how much more and how, in these trying times (on so many levels) food can be the one thing that we can just keep simple, so that we can keep doing what we need to do everyday. In our lives or in our jobs.

It's that time of year again - January - Blue Monday has come and gone and it's Bell Let's Talk. While the topic of mental health should be talked about openly and authentically all year, BLT is a good excuse to put it front and centre and have conversations that get at the heart of helping to overcome the stigma around talking about mental health, and at it's core is about getting and keeping people well. Joining me for this year's conversation is LCol Jim Hardwick, 3 Cdn Div Chaplain, and I couldn't be more excited. I hope you enjoy this in depth, heartfelt and completely amazing episode - and apologies for the background noise. The HVAC in the media room in the Crystal Palace was a little aggressive.
Below, are some resources that might be helpful to get people started on their road to mental wellness. Remember that asking for help is NOT a sign of weakness - it is a sign of strength and can inspire others to take control of their mental (or any other kind of wellness) too.

When people hear or think about Health Promotion (and we know most people don't) it is probably related to the workshops they may have taken, the briefings they may have had to sit through (trust us - we don't love annual briefings either!) or maybe a booth where we were making or handing out samples of food, or talking about Bell Let's Talk or something similar. But what is Health Promotion really all about, particularly here in Edmonton?
If this burning question has been keeping you up at night (and we know it has), then this is the episode for you! Our amazing HP Manager, Tolulope Oluyemi is joining me to talk about his work in health promotion before coming to Canada and ways that we are working to shift what and how we are doing things here. It's a hopeful, fun and informative conversation that will hopefully leave you wanting to both know more and do more, when it comes to creating health promoting habits or opportunities in your life or at your unit!
If you would like to get in touch with us, you can email healthpromotionedmonton@cfmws.com and we will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

A bit of a departure from our past episodes, today Nicole and I talk about hopes and dreams - in terms of things we have upcoming, stuff we're working on and things that we think could really be different if we approached it in a more outside the box and creative way. Mindset is everything when it comes to embracing change, and let's face it, we know that's hard.
So here's our take on what we hope and dream might be able to become reality, if we all find a way to work towards a common goal of being as good as we can be in the circumstances we find ourselves AND perhaps, collectively, working together to help to shift those circumstances to ones where they actually support that mission - helping members be as good as they can be.
Have a great summer - and if you would like to check out what we have on the website, in terms of resources or you would like to sign up for a workshop or book the annual briefing for this year, here is the link to our page:

When you think about going to Dental at CFB Edmonton, you might be thinking about the last time you flossed or how it's time to get that cavity filled or for that root canal. But when you're there, do you notice anything...different? We did. When my colleagues in Health Promotion came back from a meeting there, they were singing the praises of the different things that had been implemented at Dental to make it an exemplary place to work. So I had to know and I'm happy to share this conversation about what Dental did to make it a fun AND productive place. Every unit or regiment or location is different, but there are things that can be done that will fit the community and culture anywhere, to make any workplace one where people are excited to work, to show up everyday and to contribute and be productive. I'm personally going to take one idea and implement it at Health Promotion, which I am super excited about - listen to the episode to find out what that is!

It's March meaning that there are many themes happening - Nutrition Month which we've covered before, but it's also Social Work month, Addictions month, Neurodiversity month and I want to talk about all of them, as well as throw in some props for Sleep. Christie Mellan, Addictions Counsellor and Social Worker from CAF Health Services joins me to talk about all these interconnected themes and helps make sense of things that can often keep people from recognizing their need for or feeling like it's okay to reach out for, help.
If you or someone you know is on the fence about tackling issues around mental health or addiction or both, this is a conversation you will want to hear.

How do you define mental health? Mental Fitness? Resilience? Do you know when to fold 'em and when to run - and I'm not talking about if you've got nothing but a pair here? Mental Health is more than a buzz word, but are we really getting the message and doing what we need to do to be there, offer help, know where to go for help or perhaps hardest of all, ask for help. Join me and my guest, Skylin Herba from CAF Mental Health Services as we dive into this topic and talk about practical ways that we can double check that we are doing right by our mental health.

Think you know about messes? Do you go? Do you avoid going? Why? What is the history, why do they exist? How have they changed? What do they offer? These and many more questions are answered by my two amazing guests, Dawn DeCosse, Edmonton Garrison Officer's Mess Manager (EGOM), and Maj JP Wright, PMC of the EGOM. It's an interesting and insightful discussion that will definitely impact your understanding, dare I say even belief in the relevance of messes. Things have changed, it's not 1979 anymore, and if these two have anything to do with it, messes will be here for a long time to come. Have you been to YOUR mess lately? Go. Go now. You will be (pleasantly) surprised:)

On this first episode of Season 7, we are honoured to discuss the challenges and steps that we all need to take to move towards a place of Truth and Reconciliation as we approach the second National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. MCpl Phoenix George of LdSH(RC) speaks about what the day means, both generally and to her personally, her role as the Alberta Military Co-Chair, Defence Indigenous Advisory Group. It's an informative, thoughtful and thought provoking conversation about something that many of us never learned in school, but that we must all come to terms with if we are to be able to really become both an organization and a country that is truly committed to treating all people with respect and dignity, free of prejudice and discrimination. It's a long path, but if we follow MCpl George's advice, we can all get there. Together.

We've all tried to start something new, and a lot of times we either lack that kick in the pants to actually get going, or we are gung ho at first and then things go off the rails somehow. We know how important it is to have good habits - that will keep us healthy, make sure that we pay our taxes on time or remember to take out the garbage (sometimes the bar is very low!). But what goes into creating a habit, what good do they do and what are some of the things that we might need to be aware of so that we don't go down some dark rabbit hole by accident? Join Fitness Instructors Kristin Atkinson and Scott Paradis as we tackle the issue of habits as part of the launch of our June Project 30 Healthy Habit Challenge!

In this (longer than usual) episode we hear from two experienced CAF members who between the 2 of them have 14 tours and years and years of experience both military and life. We talk about men and mental health, not because there aren't women in the military or because women don't have mental health challenges, but because men tend to be more resistant to acknowledging and doing anything about it. It's a tough conversation to have, with yourself and each other, but as you will hear, when you push those feelings down, things don't generally get better, in fact they can very quickly spiral downwards to where rock bottom isn't just a hypothetical thing, but a very real place.
But all is not lost - there is change happening, albeit not as fast as we may want or need, and the good news is there is something that everyone can do to help make sure people, your coworkers, colleagues, battle buddies have to go through alone.
Hope that you enjoy hearing the candid stories shared by MWO Mitch Booker and WO Nolan Swetlikoff - they were so open and generous and shared so much great information it was a real pleasure to have this conversation. If you or someone you know is struggling, please know that there is help out there for you, maybe as close as the person standing next to you on the shop or hangar floor.

It's Mental Health week, so what better way to celebrate, than to talk about talking to others to help them? But when we do that, what are we tapping into? Compassion, empathy, sympathy? Does it matter? Join us this week as we talk to our very special guest, a Chaplain with the CAF, right here in Edmonton (it's a surprise who it is - you'll just have to listen) about a topic that has become something more than a passing fancy. You'll hear him describe what is in and out-side of your arcs, and how to make sure that you do right by each other, but also remain mindful of yourself. We'll talk about vulnerability, authenticity and might even throw in a few more feeling words, just to really seal the deal! I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed having this conversation - it was a joy and I know that virtually everyone will walk away having learned something and will be inspired on some level.

If you've ever been outside after a bad day and felt better by virtue of just where you found yourself, then you have experienced the healing power of nature. When you stop to think about the sheer volume of gimmicks and fads that are out there, it is a wonder there are people eating real food at all...unless it's clean...whatever that means. What are you hearing about or seeing in your various feeds? In this episode we tackle some of the things that we've been hearing a lot about lately, but that sadly, have been around for some time. Some of these things have more lives than box of cats. Have a listen and maybe learn a couple of things about asking questions to make sure that what you are getting, using or signing up for are actually going to be safe, healthy or effective.

So you're thinking about using a Pre-Workout Supplement, or maybe you already are and you have some questions. What are they, what's in them, what are they actually doing or supposed to be doing? These are good questions to be asking, and really, ones that should be asked any time someone tells you that you "should" be buying something. We should all be able to make an informed decision about what we put into our body, especially if what you are trying to do is be healthier or fitter or whatever. Supplements while "regulated" still have a lot of wiggle room, in terms of actually doing what it is that they claim to do. The "research" that they use to base this on is often exaggerated in terms of what the results actually are and how it is being interpreted to make buyers believe that what they are getting is going to positively influence their goals in the gym or the weight room or wherever. Today's episode tries to provide the facts that are needed in order to make that informed decision.
Here is the link to the Healthline article 11 Best Pre-Workout Supplements (healthline.com), but there are a ton. The journal articles referenced are cited in this document so it's interesting when the results are somewhat contradictory to what s end up being promoted. Which goes to show that the old adage of Buyer Beware is as true now as it ever was.

Meal Planning - it can be a daunting thing to consider. How do you start, what do you include, is there a "right" way to do it? These questions and more will be answered in this episode as we dive into Meal Planning with Base Dietitian Cheryl Nickurak. We'll look at simple ways to start, how to make the most of canned goods that doesn't rely on Top Chef'esque skills to get something on the table and what the benefits of meal planning can be in a variety of situations.
If you are looking for a template to get you started, you can check out https://albertahealthservices.ca/assets/info/nutrition/if-nfs-weekly-menu-planner.pdf to see a very basic starting point that has additional links to other things to consider. We also have a nice series of meal planning handouts at Health Promotion so email us at healthpromotionedmonton@cfmws.com and we can get you set up with those.
When you just don't want to think, this link https://www.albertahealthservices.ca/assets/info/nutrition/if-nfs-sample-meal-plans-for-healthy-eating.pdf can get you started and also provides a blank template if you start to feel inspired. And this link https://www.albertahealthservices.ca/assets/info/nutrition/if-nfs-quick-and-easy-meals.pdf will give you some extra "food for thought" to help you start filling in your planners as well.

Eating well doesn't have to be complicated, and it certainly shouldn't be overwhelming. When we cut ourselves some slack, it's a lot easier to enjoy food as well as make sure that we are making choices that are not only going to support our health, but also be tasty, economical and full of variety - which as we all know is the spice of life! Enjoy!

When we think about a person who has had a heart event of some kind, we often think about the things that they have to do for their rehab and recovery in terms of the physical things. Changing their diets, changing what they do for or how often they participate in physical activity. But what about the effect of such an event on our minds, on our mental well-being? And how about the effects of our mental state on our risks for having a heart event? Join us this episode as Nicole and Heather take over at the mike and talk about the Heart and Mind Connection in a way you might not have previously considered.

Self-care is perhaps more in vogue now than it has ever been, but it is still something that can cause some confusion, misgivings and in many cases even a sense of guilt - both for doing it and not doing it. So in this episode we tackle why we all need self-care, what it is, what it is sometimes confused for and how to do it in a way that is manageable and hopefully sustainable. If you think it's all about cucumber slices, have we got a lot to talk about with you!

When was the last time you had a deep and meaningful conversation with someone? When was the last time you just shot the breeze and talked about anything that came to mind? Who are the people that you had those discussions with? Is this the norm? Or was it unusual? We all fit on a broad spectrum of people who talk to one another (or ourselves) all the time all the way to those of us who say as little as possible, except under very particular circumstances.
What we hope this episode does, is to create the circumstances such that everyone wants to engage in some form of conversation more often than they currently do. We need to practice talking about the stuff that doesn't matter, so that we can get better at talking about the stuff that does. We need both kinds of conversations and the more we can practice when the stakes are low, the better we are likely to be when things get a little more intense!

It's a wrap - Season 5 concludes with a look at what we can do to keep our wellness top of mind even as we try to find the time to unwind, recharge and enjoy this time of year. It can be stressful for people so finding ways to continue doing the "right things" but maybe in a way that is a bit more flexible is key to being able to tackle the New Year with the energy and motivation needed to get through 365 more days of ups, downs and reality checks. Join Nicole and Charissa as they break down some of the simple things that you can do to find the sweet spot on that often wildly swinging pendulum to keep your physical, mental (and even financial) wellness on track over the holidays.

If you would prefer to just jump right into your workout and get into it, you are not alone. There are many people who don't give warming up the props it deserves. And if you'd rather hit the shower and grab some grub after your workout, you are again, not along. Lack of time, too many pressing priorities and a lack of understanding of why these two components are but some of the reasons they are often overlooked. Join us as two special guests, Jena MacLeod and Philippa Arbiter, share their extensive knowledge of just why we need to rethink how we start and finish our workouts!

People LOVE their protein. Whether it's Alberta steaks the size of your head or a big plate of chicken wings (not really that much protein there by the by) or a protein shake at some time in your day, it has an almost mystical quality to it. It's as though the angels sing when proponents of protein wax poetic about it. But alas, it's just not all that magical. It's important, we all need it, some need more than others, but it is not the fast-track to buff-dom nor will it guarantee weight loss. So listen in if you would like to hear the truth the about protein.

Hello listeners - this is just a short and quick monopod as we are struggling with the onset of cold and flu season. So we are a little short-handed, but I wanted to make sure that we had something to deliver to the airwaves so I'm talking about success...what does it mean in the context of performance and the topics that we have been discussing this season? I hope that you find it thought provoking and that it, not exactly lets you off the hook, but eases whatever self-or societally induced pressure there might be to "be" a certain way.
It's also MOVEMBER, so I would encourage you to check out the "Don't Change Much" podcast put on by the Men's Health Foundation - listen to it here https://menshealthfoundation.ca/dont-change-much-podcast/ and check out the most recent episode featuring Kevin Bieksa.

It's hard to say exactly when the idea of carbohydrate loading really, solidly took off and when it might have started to either wane in popularity or that people realized that there are specific circumstances in which it is truly helpful. Energy drinks - it's hard to know how many people drink them, but it's a safe bet to say that it's a lot. Seeing as how there are always 2 for some dollar amount deals at your gas station or convenience store, the marketing is working and people are snapping them up like hotcakes, or in this case, canned-pick-me-ups! In my university days, there were those students that relied on Wake-Ups to get through exam crunch time, but there is no longer just one option out there. From Energy shots, to extra-caffeinated cola's to every imaginable iteration of energy drinks, there is something out there for almost everyone. Join Nicole and I as we take a look at the why's and the cons (there might be a few pro's but you'll have to tune in) and how you might be able to navigate the landmines that are energy drinks!
The mediocre middle. What is it? How do we get there? Should we avoid it and if so why? And how? All these questions and so much more will be answered as Jeremy and I kick off Season 5 of the Food for Thought podcast with a look at how we workout in a way that might inadvertently lead us down the garden path where we don't actually want to go. How do we become aware of this? Who might we talk to to make sure we get where we DO want to go in terms of our physical training plan? And if you are leading PT in some capacity, how can you do it so that everyone benefits, not just a few? All this and more in today's episode! Hope you listen in.
We're baa-aaack! After a delightful summer break we are going to be back bringing you all things health - and in this season we're kickin' old school - well back to where we began by refocusing on nutrition - specifically as it relates to those love 'em or hate 'em macronutrients, training in a way that will help you avoid or at least be aware of why you might be seeing less progress than you would like and other things that will help you make choices that help you get the most out of the effort you put into being healthy. Hope you'll join the crew as Heather, Nicole, Jeremy and me, your host, Charissa McKay offer you up our selection of interesting topics that will hopefully push you out of your comfort zone...just a little.
When do you feel like a relationship is being negatively impacted because of an impasse you find yourself at? Why are you at an impasse? Is it because you have both dug in your heels and you refuse to budge? The proverbial line in the sand has been drawn? Why is there no progress, no middle ground, no resolution? Tune in to this final episode of Season 4 where Jeremy and I take a look at why we need dialogue. Why simply being two people talking may not be good enough to get to the middle ground and that resolution and what some of the, yes, sacrifices might be that will have to be made, by you young grasshopper, if you hope to find a way past whatever it is and move forward with whatever that relationship is - work, marriage, friendship. Therapy might still be necessary, but everyone can work on getting better at dialogue.
We talk a lot about respect in our workshops, as part of Respect in the CAF, when we talk about creating an environment in the classroom that will be conducive to learning, so please let's be respectful of one another, our opinions, viewpoints and stories that are shared. But what I think we might still be missing the mark on is the very real issue of not only respecting diversity, but taking it to the next level where we are also inclusive. In other words, what are we doing to not only try to create a diverse mix of people to shape our organization, but do what is necessary to make them feel like part of the team, and that we all belong not in spite of our differences but because of them. Tune in to listen to an engaging conversation where Heather shows us how to show up and be brave and take the next steps towards making room for inclusion.

It might also have been aptly titled, 'why are you so angry?' but the fact is that anger is something that we have all experienced, in many quarters seems to be at an all time high and is something that a lot of people are uncomfortable with - either because they are on the receiving end of unjustified or ill-communicated anger, or are not super stoked about how it's the one emotion that they exhibit...maybe a bit too regularly. So on this episode we take a look at what it is, why it's not the evil that some would make it out to be, and how we can manage it in a way that it won't hurt our health or those of the people around us. Both those we love and those we may only mildly tolerate :)
Active living, physical activity, exercise - are these words the same, variations on a theme, and if not, how are they different? Join Charissa and Jeremy as they dive into the meanings, differences and translatable tips on how to get more movement into your life. Not only because of the decreased risk of conditions we have all heard about, but for some of the more surprising benefits that come from saying no to sedentary living. If you are active, you'll want to hear how to make sure that stays a focus. If you aren't active, you'll want to listen to find ways to start building movement back into your life in a way that can be maintained for the long term.
If you think that taking care of yourself is selfish, then you need to listen to this episode and Nicole Emerson takes over the controls and we have a terrific conversation about self-care. We talk about what self-care is and isn't, how we can make it a priority, the role that work (and leadership) has in making self-care both more attainable and less needed (oh the irony). So listen and get some great take-aways (without any MSG) that will help you "fill your cup" so that you can continue to do what you need to do - for yourself AND for others.
As the country (and countries around the world) start to loosen restrictions, there are people that are happy and some that are worried and maybe less happy. EVERYONE has been impacted by the last two years, and we know that the social connections, we have, we lost and we need to build or rebuild, are going to be key in how we cope moving forward -whatever that ends up looking like. So join the whole HPS team from Edmonton as we talk about what we can do, what we might need to consider and how we can all play a role in making the future one that respects all of our positions and concerns, but that allows for meaningful communication and dialogue as we navigate the ongoing way forward.
From the Gut Microbiome in our last episode, to the other half of the gut-brain connection, today we are talking about the Mind Diet! Join Cheryl Nickurak and I as we tackle the ways that we can protect our cognitive health, navigate allergies and still make choices that support local growers/producers while considering the environment! There's lots to cover and there are some fun recipes mentioned that you may want to give a try - so tune in and learn how to eat well and protect that gray matter at the same time.
It's Nutrition Month - the 40th Edition of Nutrition Month and we are going to be talking about some of the big themes this year and how they impact our choices, our health and the health of our planet as well as taking a look at the teeny tiny inhabitants of our gut - the gut microbiome, what it is, what it does and why we need to look after it. Join our Base Dietitian Cheryl Nickurak and I as we embark on a lively discussion that covers the big to the small as it pertains to nutrition.
Ah sleep - for some, a nightly given, for others something they would gladly have more of and for others a wistful and elusive dream. Why is sleep so different, so difficult (at times) and so important? Find out all this and more as your HP Dream team dives into sleep - join, Heather, Nicole and Charissa as they discuss the need for, the benefits of and the effects of too little, sleep. It will be time well spent if it means that you can find a few quick tweaks to increase your odds of getting your required shut-eye!
Whether you are in a committed romantic relationship or not, it's a good idea to make sure that we have people in our lives that we like to be with, are fun to hang around with, will (hopefully) keep us out of trouble and will be there when we invariably are let down, frustrated or in need of a good venting session. But it's not always easy, especially if your friends are in a hometown on the other side of the country or your partner is pissed at you for being posted to Edmonton. Listen to Nicole and Tamara share tips to help you keep your relationship in the green, and ways to build new relationships if you find yourself here and on your own!
It's Bell Let's Talk week so what better subject to tackle than Mental Health. It is one of the biggest challenges resulting directly from the effects of the pandemic, and we need to do a better job of helping one another, supporting one another and calling out those that would mock or belittle the need for or those who ask for help. "Join the conversation" with Nicole Emerson and I as we talk about the stigma, the barriers that continue to exist around acknowledging and seeking help and what we can do, based in part from some of the suggestions found in this year's Bell Let's Talk campaign, to help make mental health as easy to talk about as yesterday's news or what's for supper!
It's that time of year again...not only are we rolling out a new season of our rebranded podcast, (hello everyone and welcome to Food for Thought) but many people are dusting off their annual New Year's resolutions. Too often they involve eating better, getting "back into shape" or something like that. We'll be tackling food in March, but for this first episode join Heather Gareau-Miller as we talk about what a good, solid, long-term fitness plan looks like and how you can make sure you are going to be able to participate in the marathon of life, as close to injury free as the fates will allow as possible - provided you make some good choices. On our CAFConnection page you will be able to download a "recipe" that will make sure that you are covering all your bases when it comes to a well-rounded workout/fitness plan.
Here it is - the intro for our re-branded podcast! Everything you ever wanted to know about being the best you can be - mentally, physically and emotionally. From sleep to working out (smarter not harder) to stress and substance use, we are going to cover it all in Season 4. With new guests, old favourites, and your team Edmonton Health Promotion Specialists guiding the way, this is going to be a great season of content and we're excited to share it with you. Looking forward to connecting with you soon!
People drink for many reasons - do you know yours? There are both positives and negatives to drinking, the catch is that depending on your motivation for drinking - it can quickly become a slippery slope.
We know that stress and anxiety, which are a part of life, are reasons some people drink, and we also know that the pandemic has increased the stress and anxiety - which means that the risk for problem drinking has also increased. Even now as we return to more normal routines, there are still many concerns people have related to the everyday life stuff that continue to require coping strategies, and unfortunately, drinking is a coping strategy for many.
Listen to an in-depth discussion of what you need to consider when you are dealing with stress, when drinking might be getting to be a problem or what to look for when you think someone you know might need help.
Drug use has been either hidden, villainized or both and neither helped to deal with the whys around why people used. With the legalization of cannabis there have emerged a number of new problems as people feel more comfortable being open about their use, or trying it for the first time.
Anecdotal evidence has long suggested there were medicinal benefits, but it is only now that we can start to do the research to determine what, how much, when etc. cannabis use can be helpful.
In the meantime, there are regulations in place in the CAF that mean that recreational use still falls within a pretty limited scope and so it is important to know what that scope is so that you don't endanger your career, yourself or others.
Listen and learn and find out if you are in the green (no pun intended) with respect to your drug use and make sure that you are not a trajectory to health or life problems.
Gaming and gambling have literally gone viral as online versions of both have taken the stage. People can choose to participate in online gaming and gambling 24/7 and there are consequences to that - both in terms of potential financial cost, but the costs to mental health, relationships and quality of life.
It can be a fun way to pass the time, maybe connect with like-minded others or feel the thrill of the win. But as with all activities that have the potential to be addicting, gaming and gambling come with a bit of a dark side.
Join us for an interesting look at gaming and gambling. Knowing what the signs are when things start to get out of hand and knowing how to get help before you have to dig yourself out of a hole are the ways that you can make sure that your gaming and gambling stays in the green.
Join Edmonton's Health Promotion Specialists as they discuss what success could mean to you - if you choose to redefine it and picture it in a way that is drastically different from what society has us believe is success. Understand how the conversations that we have with ourselves and the different sources of influence that impact that conversation also impacts how successful we can (or can't be).
Join us if you are tired of being your worst enemy and want to get off the hamster wheel of guilt and failure and learn how to be better not because you are following some new diet or exercise plan, but because you get to choose what success looks like for you and build on the momentum of those little successes to eventually get you over the other side of the finish line.
Have you ever wondered why you keep setting goals and you keep not achieving them? Are you tired of "failing"?
Maybe what you need is a little James Clear and his Atomic Habits to get you sorted!
Join Edmonton's Health Promotion Specialists as they walk you through how getting your systems in order increases the chances that the success you redefined in Episode 1 is going to come to fruition. You may have simply been underestimating the number of steps that went into any one thing - so that the habits, rituals or behaviours that you want to have to get you to the other side of that finish line, never really get off the ground. The intention was there - you just needed to break it down a little more -so listen in and learn how to take it to the next level.
If you still believe that there are good and bad foods and that you are good or bad for eating them, then join your Edmonton Health Promotion Specialists as they smash that notion into far left field.
We all have a relationship with food - some are just a little more dysfunctional than others. It doesn't mean that you are weird or messed up just that you need to go a little deeper than thinking it's all about the macros if you want to finally get your eating and food choices to where you want them to be. And that is not going to happen without recognizing that food is often both a trigger and a coping strategy.
If you want to straighten out your relationship with food then this episode is for you. Building on some of what we discussed in Episodes 1 and 2, we'll help you recognize that not until we start to unpack some of the underlying issues that we may have with food that it's unlikely that we are going to be able to stay on the other side of that finish line for very long. The bungee cord of "bad habits and triggered eating" is going to pull you back until you tackle those triggers whether they are situations, people, feelings or whatever.
Buckle up - this one is a bumpy ride.
Wouldn't it be nice if we could all have a do over or a mulligan?
Well, when it comes to getting to the other side of that finish line - there are as many clean slates as you need! Sound crazy? Well it isn't so much crazy as a radically different way of stopping ourselves from beating ourselves up for making mistakes. Last I checked we were all still human and there is no one that hasn't made mistakes. It's what we choose to do after that really makes or breaks whether you are going to be "successful" or not.
If you learn to live in the now, appreciate where you are now and then make choices that will help you get to where you think you want to be - using those systems we discussed in Ep 2 or realizing that we need a good and proper relationship with food (Ep 3) - then you will find yourself on the other side of that finish line.
But beating yourself up after every set back isn't the way to do it. You need to be your best cheerleader - not (only) your worst critic.
Join your Edmonton Health Promotion Specialists as they wrap up the A4C series looking at ways that new beginnings helps to accomplish happy endings.
Are you tired of living feeling like you are being controlled by your food, your body image, or what the world is telling us that we should look like, be like, and eat like? If you are ready to have a different conversation with yourself and explore what your relationship with food is and how you would like to take back control - then check out the trailer and tune in for the rest of the series.
It's unlikely that you have not heard of the BMI, and it's even less likely that you don't have stories about how BMI impacted (mostly negatively) people's lives and careers. Listen to Nicole and Charissa talk about the interesting history and path that the BMI took from it's mathematical origins to a tool that has in truth, done more harm than good. It's the last episode before the rebrand, so sit back and get ready to learn how we can undo some of the damage that BMI has done and move forward in way where we all end up winners on the other side of that now infamous finish line.
Could it be that it's really just as simple as counting your macros - those carbs, proteins and fats and you will soon be rockin' that beach body? Or is there something that "they" aren't telling you. Join Heather and I as we tackle this next myth - is it nutritional accountability or a bald-faced lie? Find out by hearing some real life numbers to see whether this is a dream come true or nothing more than smoke and mirrors.
Join Jeremy Peressini and I as we talk about how the myth around being able to crunch your way to a 6-pack may have come to be and what we need to know about carrying on with trying to achieve the potentially impossible. What are the other things we need to think about when we are doing activity, whether that is living an active lifestyle or "working out"? What are our goals and how have they been impacted by the mythology around weight, health, nutrition and fitness?
Join Nicole Emerson and Charissa McKay as they look at and unpack some of the myths around weight loss. They will dig into why there is still this pressure to "lose weight" and why it is way harder than the social media influencers, pop culture and the diet industry would have you believe. you may not like the answer - but truth is often a hard pill to swallow.
On Season 3 of the Nutrition Challenge Insiders Podcast we tackle the myths that have been haunting and plaguing us in terms of "diets" and "exercises" that end up just letting us down. Join our great team of Health Promotion and Reconditioning Specialists as we crack these myths wide open and challenge the pop culture approach to what we should eat and what we should do to be healthy.
In this last episode of Season 2, Nicole and I take a look at the role of the Social Determinants of Health, specifically, Social Support, on how we can continue on our journey to wellness when things aren't as easy as they might once have been. Between the pandemic and daily stressors, without social support (and we'll look at different ones) it's really hard to stay the course. We all need help from time to time, and when there are systems in place to provide that support, it's easier for us to keep fighting the good fight!
