We were in the heat so much our days leading up to this chat, that we made sure we did this episode indoors with Air Conditioning running. This episode, we have a repeat guest and 3 new guests to chat with on the episode. Let’s start with our repeat guest, Mark, who was on our August 5th, 2021, episode titled, “FFR: Another One PTC” when we had the chance to talk about his own bicycle ride with fellow old man Martin from Portland, OR to San Francisco, CA. Anyway, I’ve been swamped lately trying to get things done as I finish my own journey and asked my friend to the write up:

I was asked by Dan to do the write up for this episode of Friends From the Road podcast.  My name is Mark Ruiz, and I was lucky enough to provide support across the Mojave Desert for Dan, Scotty, Ryan Rose, and Kevin. It was great fun and an honor to serve such a great group of young adventurers. Dan, as you may know, is headed towards the end of his adventure to ride to and through all 48 states. He is on number 47 and will complete his ride October 10 in Las Vegas. He ended up being an inspiration to the others, whom I will introduce in a sec, by his determination, positivity, and dedication to his cause, suicide awareness.

Scotty and Ryan Rose set out from San Diego to ride/rollerblade across the country. Scotty is providing support to Ryan for her attempt to break the Guinness speed record for rollerblading across the country. Scotty rides his fully loaded bicycle and provides encouragement and carries most of their equipment and lots of water. Ryan rollerblades and/or walks, when necessary, in her rollerblades 35 to 65+ miles per day. Some roads are smooth, and some are dirt roads. Scotty is there to help her up when she falls, which isn’t very often. They are also doing their adventure for Suicide Awareness. Learn more about their journey at https://www.ryanrolls.com/ and on her Instagram https://www.instagram.com/ryanthegrill/

Kevin is a machinist who bought his bike ($25), welded brackets for disc breaks, made his own frame bag and decided to ride his bike to go see family in Philadelphia. This is his second bike tour and his longest. I think Kevin was very happy to be riding with others as he expected to not see anyone for a while. Follow him on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/kruser_kev/

And myself, I am retired, and met Dan while on a bike tour this summer. We crossed the Golden Gate Bridge together with 4 other new friends. I offered to assist him across the desert. He hesitated at first but finally said Ok. I’m so glad he did. I got to spend some special time with Dan and met 3 more Friends From The Road.

Today's guest, Gregory Kampf, was kind enough to open his home to allow me to stay when passing through Huntington Beach, CA. We had connected like many of my connections through social media, reaching out months before about helping me when I got closer and as I did, it became a reality. Here we are, together in person, talking about Greg’s most recent bicycle adventure that he did with his partner, Lisa. They just got back from riding the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP), a trail that I tell everyone to go ride. Listen to find out if he thinks the same thoughts. This wasn’t his first or only trip either, he’s been doing them since 1993, listing them off in the episode! He and Lisa are both educators so most of his and their journeys happen in the summer months and during school vacations. Greg is retired now but he shares the pros of being in the education field and his own love for service and teaching, as he started teaching at the bottom, as a tutor and a playground supervisor and finishing his career as superintendent.

Gregory tells us about how he was the first person in his family to go to college and become an educator. His love for teach also fed his love for adventures on his bicycle. One of those adventures led to the one thing we all wish to avoid, an accident. Greg shares his struggles after his accident, being hit at 60 mph, that left him with a broken leg in 2 places, pelvic ring expansion and other issues while on vacation near Kansas City, MO requiring him to be med flighted. After being laid up for 5 weeks, Greg returned to work as superintendent in a wheelchair, seeing the students even more eye to eye. He just had to move at a slower planned out pace, but he overcame his injuries putting in the extra effort and was able to get back to working at full swing and ultimately being able to get back to riding.

00:00 We start the conversation with the oldest guy in the group, Paul Grigoruk, who is 77 years old and doing a section of the Pacific Coast from San Francisco to Orange County. This is something he has done every year for nearly 30 years! He will make the trip to about 10 miles away from home from which he will have his wife come get him with his pickup, where he gets her involved. They have made their marriage last now for 55 years! Paul and I have been camping together for several days; he gets up super early, 4:30am and is on the rode before 6am to avoid the morning traffic and he motivated me to get moving earlier. If this old guy can do, so should I, just not that early.

06:22 Our next guest is Troy Mayers, who has been into Mountain biking for over 30 years in the Santa Cruz area, that’s when they weren’t the bikes we have today. Now forced into earlier retirement because of the pandemic, he has got further into biking with gravel biking and starting short local tours before linking all of that into the larger picture with longer tours hoped for in the future. This trip was to make it to Big Sur CA through alternative routes. When I met Troy, he was doing just that, recon to a route to avoid cars and making it safe that much longer, I was unsure and didn’t go with him and went the crazy way, listen to how it went for him on his way to camp.

12:49 Matty and Taylor is a couple doing their first bike adventure together. Matty, is from Australia, did this route in 2019, which he says was completed different from this one. Listen to find out why! Matty met Taylor at the end of his tour and on their first date, he showed up to the date in bike clothes and he knew she was the one when she said she would love to do things like that. Now going full circle, they are reliving how they met and doing it together. Taylor has done short little trips but nothing to this magnitude, and after day 2 who would think they would make it. They share the events of Day 2! Also they are doing this as Vegans, something I was always found interesting while on the road, listen as they share how they survive. Follow their adventures

26:21 Ollie Day and Daniel Khorrami are two friends that have been friends since they were toddlers, being neighbors. They are on their first tour going from their hometown, Seattle, to Las Angeles to visit a buddy going to school there. They were on a hike when the idea came about a year ago, then 6 months ago they started kind of planning. Then a month before they set a date, June 6th. That date came and they were like “let’s leave the 9th” and then they were off. They have known each other practically their whole lives yet on this trip they would learn things about each other you only learn with this type of travel. They also share a story about the emerald triangle, murder mountain, the events leading up to it and the road angel that came to the rescue, this is a must hear! They referenced this film on Netflix, see it HERE. They share the some of the experiences they have had up to this point including the road angel they had that morning.

40:36 Cody Bryan is our last and youngest guest on the episode! He is from my home state of New Hampshire and ended up on this journey kind of by accident. He got out of college early and went back to working at his previous summer job and hated it! He quit and thought what should I do now? He knew a friend that just finished a coast-to-coast trip and got info about it. Then talked to another friend of a friend that did the Pacific Coast and then was set. Two days before leaving he bought his ticket and boxed up the bike. With the help of a friend, Hannah Fry, which helped him prepare and get started. So, he kind of just rolled into this whole situation. He also has acquired multiple pairs of shoes for climbing and trail running in between the biking, because that’s not enough. Listen as Cody shares his story while we are in Big Sur for the night! Even at 20, he reminds us to just try to go have fun.

I hope you Enjoyed this Lineup on another Picnic Table Chat (PTC) and stay tuned for another episode coming soon!

Well I keep running into these amazing people in groups that weren't groups before. So we have yet another one, a Picnic Table Chat this time at Gualala Regional Park. Cyclists out on our own adventures but have this time together.

00:00 Eddie was planning to originally do this journey early 2020 when those plans were halted. With a history of camping and backpacking he wanted to see more but go longer distances with limited time. Bicycle touring and the Pacific Coast seemed to be the spot and the way to accomplish what he wanted. He started with a bicycle bag because starting somewhere was better than nothing. Last year, he instead did Pittsburgh to Washington DC via the GAP and C and O trail. This year, he had 3 weeks off work to ride from Seattle WA to San Francisco CA. With hopes to do more adventures overseas, with thoughts of Italy. Follow him on INSTAGRAM to see all his adventures!

08:49 Our next two guests are Mark and Marty, the old guys of the group. Mark known as the slow guy is 63 years old and Martin is 73. They have been cycling buddies for 27 years now and coworkers in the education field for over 30 years. The first adventure was Seattle WA to Mexico. This trip is reliving a segment of that ride and a route they have done many times. They haven't let age stopped them, this trip started in Portland OR and will end in San Francisco CA. They love adventure and though age is a factor, they keep moving. Listen as Mark shares a hilarious story from the day on the road. Great guys, No shame!

21:02 Our third segment is with Brandon that spent the night with me the night before in Manchester CA at the KOA and road some miles with me that morning. He did his first tour 10 years ago with a friend which changed his life to a life of travelling. The last couple months he has been back home with his parents. He felt stuck and the way to change that moving. He borrowed his mom's bike with some gear and took off on the public transit to Fort Bragg CA and is working back to his parents home in the Bay area. He will finish and start his van life after and plans to work in the river areas as an experienced river guide. He loves the water and the beaches are the same for him, he enjoys the breaks and we share a moment when he is torn to ride or stop. Follow him on his adventures on INSTAGRAM

27:15 Our Last Guest is Patrick, which came from Germany to see more of America after visiting here 30 years before. He started this journey in April 2021 in Savannah, GA on the one year anniversary of his best mates death. He didn't know what to expect but started in the warmth heading across in a northerly direction. Warmth changed to riding through snow, ice and cold then back to the warmth changing time zones along the way. Patrick shares his experiences of over 4000 miles and will also finish in SF where he catches a plane home. He enjoys getting on his bicycle and the freedom of touring, we all in this episode can relate in this! He shares his experience of seeing another cycling tourist for the first time and the encounters he had along with other experiences with "road angels". Amazing stories were shared and memories that couldn't had been without the bicycle. Set mini goals to accomplish the larger goal as patrick says listen to his amazing adventure through america.

This was a great line up and I hope you enjoy the stories and find your own inspiration and motivation to do your own journeys whether that's on a bicycle or other form or movement. Stay Encouraged!

I knew when I hit the Pacific coast highway that I would see cyclists touring the ACA route and maybe some hikers along the way. I didn't expect to see so many at camp and they all had an amazing story to share! We all set up camps, got cleaned up, ate and then it was time to record at Standish Hickey State Recreation Area. We start the conversation with Brittany.

Brittany is partnered with Tom on a trip that the took from their current home in Eugene OR to Fort Bragg CA to relive a segment they did together in 2016 with their dog. After the bicycling, they upgraded to the RV and continued travelling until the pandemic. Now they have reintroduced themselves to travel with bikes again before picking up roots and beginning travel again. Listen to their story!

THEROLLINGPACK.COM INSTAGRAM

11:58 Then we have Jack and Hannah. A father/daughter combination on a trip around North California and enjoying some rock climb before and after the cycle portion. They are the first such combination I have met on this journey. Listen As Jack shares what inspired these journeys and a huge shoutout to his wife, Laura, who inspired these journeys. Oh yeah, he went across the country with his son 4 years earlier and I forgot to mention, they are on a tantum! Hannah was not wanting to do the same thing as her brother, she wanted to something different! Can you relate? Hannah Loves rock-climbing and wanted to combine that into her adventure with dad. The plans didn't go to plan from day one and they modified adapted and overcame. Listen to as they overcome these challenges together!

HANNAH AND JACK EXCELLENT ADVENTURE

31:50 Then we finish it off with the high energy and this episode’s cohost, Adam! He started in Johnson City, TN making it to the west coast and now going north through California on CA-1, He says, "I'll tell you what California has been nuts" listen to what he means in the episode! The peaceful start to his ride then turning into amazing times but chaos, like that of my own journey. He was inspired after returning as a Peace Corps Volunteer and experiencing Africa. He needed movement in his life and started thinking, how he could explore America. Now hopes to become a full-time writer and is seeking out schools now. See about his adventures HERE and INSTAGRAM

When I was on my way to Bend, Oregon, I had no idea where I was going to stay or what I would be able to do while I was there. Well, my host before arriving to Bend knew some in town and reached out. The next thing I knew I was talking to Nick Larson about staying in his tiny home that he is selling (if it has gone yet). Anyway, we both quickly learn that we had a lot of stuff in coming. One of those things is biking and the need for adventure. We made plans to do some downhill mountain biking, a new experience for me, for an afternoon at Mt. Bachelor. It was a great time other than ripping my shorts up towards the end of the day. Listen as we talk about that then we transition to the other thing we had in common, overcoming tragedy.

As many know I was hit by a car in October, and I am now back on the road fighting to not be afraid of the roadways and vehicles on them. It's a challenge even with all my experiences! The same goes for Nick in a different situation. It was Memorial Weekend 2020, Nick was planning a quick day to Mount Hood, when things didn't go to plan! What was planned as a couple hour day change into moments of life or death! Listen as we talk about this whiteout event and the chance to overcome his tragedy with those involved in his rescue. It’s really a powerful one that I hope someone is inspired by!

With the world as big as it is, it's crazy when small world things happen! I had made it into Oregon and was making my way to Portland when I began reaching out to WARMSHOWERS hosts. I contacted several with 2 responds, one of those people was Mari Rudd. At the time I had no idea but we met back in March 2020 when she was riding the southern tier with her son, Erik. After we realized we met on our journeys it became even more exciting. A one night stay would turn into 3 nights of amazing times and stories. Today we talk about Mari and Terry's first cross country adventure and how that has led to others and more. Listen as Terry shares the struggles he fought and the accident that delayed them. They would finish their first journey where I would start my years later. This is our conversation!

Mari wrote a book about their adventure called PEDAL PUSHERS COAST-TO-COAST which I am currently in the process of reading myself thru SMASHWORDS.COM

It was by chance that I met our next guest! I was in the Quinault Lake and Rainforest Region hanging at the museum when I saw a touring cyclist approaching! I out of excitement yelled, “Yeah Cyclist” and through my hands up in the air. It doesn’t matter if you’re on your journey for a day or years when you see others doing things like you, you get excited or at least I do. After chatting for a few minutes we decided to split the camping bill and stay together. The cyclist is Grant Stringer and it was the end of his 2nd day since starting his adventure. Listen as we talk about where the journey is going, what inspired the ride and the special guest that will be joining him down the road. Grant is a freelance reporter and writer so be sure to see all his stories and write ups about his adventure at BLOND MAN ON A BIKE BLOG

I went to Vashon Island to spend a couple days at the AYH Ranch Campground where I met a couple of interesting people. I had just arrived and was unsure where in the open field I wanted to setup camp. After some time, I decided to move closer to the parking area and the buildings on the property. I grabbed my stuff to move when I heard a loud motorcycle pull in. Moments later I start talking with its passengers Devin and Rowan. We kicked it off right away and before I knew it, they were telling me stories that I needed to share with you all. This weekend was also Devin’s 32nd birthday and it was great to spend time with them and share an amazing dinner. We planned to record earlier in the day, but life happened meaning the neighbor started mowing as I was getting ready to record, so we ended up getting to it later.

Listen as Devin and Row share their types of work, the adventure they have done, and the challenges faced along the journey. Row also shares her secret identity but really you already know it, she is a romance novel writer with like 14 books published! Her real identity has been kept a secret to protect her profession, what is it? We talk about that secret profession, her full-time profession and how her career has taken her on some epic adventures.

So, this episode is a bit different! I was planning to meet up with 303 Endurance and 303 Cycling founder and host of the garage talks to speak about my journey. A couple days before, I met Kyle Hamilton while on a ride! He is a high energy Mountain biker and yoga lover with a story different but similar in ways to mine. Kyle just moved to Colorado from Indiana after finish up time he served for cannabis. When he first went to jail he was weighed for the first time and the number was over 400 pounds! That was the start of this mans transformation in life which has had its ups and downs along the way.

Anyway, I told Bill about Kyle and how I planned to interview him and after talking thought it be best to do a collaboration episode. Instead of me interviewing, Bill interviews kyle and I. Listen as we share our stories of change, inspiration and hope!

After the first take didn't record on video for Bill and my sound quality wasn't great, we tried for a second time. Luckily I got the audio on the second try. Enjoy!

Something Kyle said to me on our rides from the Chinese Philosopher was:

"If you are depressed you are living in the past.

If you are anxious you are living in the future.

If you are at peace you are living in the present." - Lao Tzu

I had a conversation in the Namessential Magikal Healing kitchen with founder and owner, Patricia Akins. Tricia has been my long-time sponsor for my CBD products since starting my cycling adventures. I have been friends with the family since before I got into cycling and have always enjoyed their family operation including the fact that the products, they produce also are sourced directly from their family Hemp Farm in Massachusetts. I am thankfully restocking my supplies before going out to finish my mission of the Lower 48 States, take note as we talk about the newest product I received while visiting the facility. We talk about her initial thought of this guy just getting on a bicycle and dreaming big. Listen as we chat about her own activities and lifestyle like being an avid skier, biker, yurt owner, healer, and Sport yoga instructor. She is known as the Sport Yoga Lady providing a unique style of yoga, using movement and breath as another way to heal physically, mentally, and spiritually. During the talk she explains just what sport yoga really is and how it can be beneficial.

I got the chance to have a conversation with an old friend from the road, Erik Barstow, which I met when I travelled to his property in July 2018. The stay stuck out more for me then Erik because the property he now owns and operates the Rattle River Lodge and Hostel is at its busiest time in July and August, the time I was there. Erik was fully booked but gave me a place to stay in a house tent out back in the woods because of my mission and our veteran brotherhood. It was a nice separate place away from the rest, it was amazing. The things that stuck out the most for me was the way through hikers packed. I left the hostel with at least 20 pounds less weight, Erik and others helped with the process. Now back, today the property is different, the tent house is gone, and a larger parking lot took its spot. Listen as Erik talks about his fight with Lyme Disease, how he came to own a hostel on the Appalachian Trail, the improvements he has made since my first visit and the new venture with E-bikes, to bring more activities to the White Mountains area. Listen to our conversation.

I caught up with my old friend from the road, Alex Caicedo... Aka BumOn2wheels. It had been 5 months since our paths crossed back in Texas when he was the first guest on the podcast, so we took this time to catch up about his ride. Listen as we talk about his ride through the south, the difference we had in a state then up the east coast. Now on his 41st state, we talk about his experience since becoming an ambassador for the One Pedal At A Time Movement when he joined on his 28th state. We discuss our plans to meet in New England, how it’s been reuniting and of course, his plans for the future. Listen as Alex also discussing his experience with the Living Works Start training course that he took at the beginning of the year and how it might benefit others.

I met up with longtime friend and member of the One Pedal At A Time Movement, Rob Loesher while visiting Haverhill, MA. Ironically, Rob and I both got into cycling around the same time and have both used it as a tool for keeping our physical and mental health in check. We also took our first ride together from start to finish before recording this episode. Before cycling, Rob had a love for music that continues to this day. He really enjoys sharing that entertainment, that has been nearly nonexistent over the last year with the pandemic in Massachusetts and around the world. It hit us all hard the lack of interactions and gatherings. At the begin it was so hard but this was the chance for him to take his music to a new level. Like me, when I got it Cycling, Rob got into playing music for the wrong reasons but we both have found our real reasons for our activities. Rob is currently working on a new album and an amazing song called “Save Me” and you can hear a preview on his website, link below and stay tuned for the full album release.

With so many people working from home, it's important to keep a health balance of personal and work time. My next guest dealt with the struggle of not having a healthy balance. Listen to his story and be inspired!

I met up and stayed with my friend Mike O'Handley in Taunton, Mass while on my trip in New England. I met Mike around 2014 at his mechanic shop where he was working and living at the time. Every time we hung out regardless of the time of day or even night, Mike was working. He worked hard but missed the second half of that quote until early 2019 when the business was struggling, and Mike had done everything he could but it wasn’t enough. Mike thought he could fix things by pulling out lines of credit, but it just made things worse. The stresses of trying to keep it going and not having a healthy balance work and home led him to meet with a specialist for help and that’s when the transition began. Mike set boundaries by separating work and casual time while also going to fulfill the quote “Work hard, Play hard” with playing hard! Now going on adventures and on a new path, a path that started when he finally was willing to accept help and find balance. Listen as we talk about his OPAAT activity and it’s not pedal.

I met up with my friend Jakeb Miller to talk about camping, bikes, accidents and safety, all things we both have experience in. Jakeb and I were able to meet up at Ray Roberts Lake State Park Texas to test out our bicycle setups and camping equipment. We took a short ride then got to talking about the importance of knowing the laws for your area about cyclists and as well the importance of being seen and visible. Listen as we also discuss his family's first adventure west but not by bicycle, find out how in the episode. It was great to chat with Jakeb, camp together and ride miles together and I'm sure it wont be the last.

In this episode we speak to Heather Haberman about Jessy's Toy Box, an organization that is bringing smiles to children in hospitals all year round! I wanted to do this episode while doing the Movement Monday series but I just emotional couldn't get myself together enough to be able to do it. I am super glad to share this friend from the road and movement that left an impact on me and I know if you listen it will do it to you too! We speak to Jessy's mom to understand the reasons for starting, continuing and the future for this organization that a boy dreamed and hopes will be in every state one day!

Jessy’s mission is such an amazing way to give back to kids who need that extra pick me up especially the ones who see too many hospitals and infusion centers. they aren’t looking for big toys, just something to help put that smile on kids to help them forget why they are there even if it is for a few moments. They collect toys, books, gift Cards and many other items. They MUST BE NEW to help with protecting the kids. You don’t have to be a Super Hero to support Jessy’s Toy Box. There are many ways you can contribute towards their causes, and every little bit that you commit goes a long way in helping them fulfill their mission. Learn more below about how you can get involved to do some good.

The sign, "Make A Stranger Smile... Be The Change" has been part of my journey since September 2018 when I joined my host family on The PMA Bike Ride with founder, Joe Cox, while in Philadelphia, PA. As a bike messenger, Joe saw so many people and street citizens down on their luck. During the 2016 elections he felt defeated and truly felt that the only way to help is within the immediate community. Joe states, “in a world filled with so much negativity it should be clear that we should do everything we can to make a stranger smile. Be the change, now spread love and PMA.” Joe’s hope is to get The PMA Bike Rides in every major neighborhood throughout the country and ultimately around the world. His goal is becoming a reality with PMA being spread in Milwaukee, Chicago, Seattle, New York City and in parts of Canada. Listen to the episode and if your interested in getting involved reach out to The PMA Bike Ride! The world needs more love and PMA!

I had a chat with my friend from the road, Dan Thompson, a friend I made while riding through South Bend, IN. Dan grew up in South bend and didn't do many outdoor adventures growing up other than exploring the neighborhood woods. He was in the top 3 students for his high school graduating class and got a full ride to Indiana University - South Bend. Dan stayed mostly in the small town midwestern bubble most of his life. He expected to be like the “typical person” he knew, where you go to school, get a career, and start a family. When he was 21, things change for him and the life of adventures began! Listen as he talks about those moments and how he has done nearly all his adventures on a low budget. We talk about the milestones he reached while riding with me and the journeys that were inspired from that fun day.

I get the chance to go back down memory lane with my friends from the road, David Carden and Todd Fulmer. Though they weren't the first ones to ride with me, they were the first after a huge milestone was started. There was so many reasons why Mobile, Alabama was a great stop on my journey, listen as we talk through my time there and the many events leading up this epic segment. Among Mobile being the place where I stayed the longest in one place on my journey to starting the nonprofit organization, One Pedal At A Time (OPAAT) Movement. This episode talks about how these two friends become brothers to me and how they became cyclists over night!

Ironically we recorded this episode on our 2 year anniversary of us starting our weekend adventure.

Movement Monday has two guests that have been longtime friends, Joel Wood and Wendell Moore, on the series to discuss Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). Their friendship spans decades before becoming involved in this movement with working together in government to starting a restaurant with friends to moving to different capitals, their bond was never broken and continues to stay strong. The words “incurable” and “untreatable” are words no parent or person wants to hear but that’s exactly the words associated with Duchenne and for the many other forms of Muscular Dystrophy (MD). The Wood Family heard similar words when their son, James, was diagnosed in the early 2000’s and the family set out to change the words associated with the disease with the creation of the Foundation to Eradicate Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is one of the most serious genetic diseases in children worldwide and this form typically only affects boys but there are other forms that can affect different areas of the body and can affect boys, girls, men, and women. Duchenne MD is the most common childhood form of MD, as well as the most common of the Muscular Dystrophies overall, accounting for approximately 50 percent of all cases. The Foundation to Eradicate Duchenne’s mission is to identify, leverage, and bring to market treatments that will benefit ALL sufferers of this disease. The advancements within the last 20 years for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is creating a huge shift. This shift is making better opportunities for patients and their families with DMD that will allow these boys to live better lives as well as how they can benefit other diseases by breaking the code on Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

Today’s co-host is Air Force Veteran Michael Minor here to discuss an organization within Garmin called GPS VETS. Let’s first Start with what is GPS? Its known as Global Positioning System and it’s a satellite-based navigation system made up of at least 24 satellites. GPS works in any weather conditions, anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day, with no subscription fees or setup charges. The U.S. Department of Defense originally put the satellites into orbit for military use, but they were made available for civilian use in the late 1980s. This opened a whole new industry that has become part of our everyday lives. A company that started during this time was Garmin. Today they are one of the biggest GPS companies in the world. I reached out to them about talking about their movement because of the support I received from the company when I broke my watch on my journey. When I got to Lander, WY, Garmin upgraded my broken watch at no cost to me which did more than just track my miles. When I was hit in Arizona that watch detected the accident and sent a message to my mom and sister. They knew where I was before I was able to tell them. Those safety features have been used all over the world.

Over the past 20+ years, GPS technology has led to a spread of commercial applications across industries and sectors, including agriculture, construction, transportation, aerospace, marine and especially with the creation of portable devices that impact our everyday life. In addition to creating new efficiencies and reducing operating costs. The adoption of GPS technology has improved safety, emergency response times and environmental quality. GPS giants like Garmin are building various communities within their organization like GPS VETS to make stronger communities that can impact the lives of many. I didn't expect that GPS VETS doesn’t stand for global positioning system, but something even greater. Listen how Mike and his team are making differences within the veteran community inside Garmin and beyond. Its time to get locked in!

JT Frank co-hosts Movement Monday to talk about Consequence of Habit podcast and new nonprofit organization. Listen how this Air Force Veteran changed and continues to change his life after years of struggles. Is it possible to kick whatever bad habit is holding you back? Sure and JT realized he needed better habits, including Self-acceptance one that many of us should work on. The habits he had restricted him until he analyzed them and made the changes one habit at a time. We talk about how Athletic Brewing Company has had an impact as well! Use this code RWD20 or COH20 to receive 20% off your first order.

JT started Consequence of Habit Podcast to explore how habits relate to happiness, success, or lack thereof. Talking to others who have made massive changes in their lives by changing their habits. This led to wanting to make a bigger impact and is currently in process of filing for 501c3 status. The mission is to raise awareness and help those struggling with bad habits to get them into better lifestyles. Remember to take time to manifest positive habits examine your routines, what happiness do you get? Analyze the reward, once you know the why you do something it will be easier to find a better habit that will give you the same reward. Identify the cue, being aware of the habit and what’s reinforcing it is a positive way forward and is the first step to change.

Glen Bloomstrom cohosting the series to share with us, LivingWorks Education. Back on episode two of Movement Monday, I talked about a movement that I value very dearly and if you have followed my journey at any point through Ride with Dan USA or the nonprofit One Pedal At A Time Movement then you have heard me talk about LivingWorks Education. Livingworks is the world leading suicide intervention training organization and we believe suicide is preventable! I thought what better way to share this movement that is so near and dear to me then to bring them in to share their own organization and their newest programs.

Our co-host today is my first guest that I did not meet on my journey, yet we are strongly connected in this cause. Before joining the LivingWorks team, our co-host served for 30 years as an active-duty army chaplain working with some of the U.S. Army’s most elite! He serviced from battalion to Army Staff and all levels between before retiring as a colonel in 2011. Glen is the LivingWorks director of “Faith Community Engagement”, he also works with faith communities, the us department of defense, veteran organizations, and international militaries. I am excited for us to get to know him and the work he is doing at LivingWorks. Come join us and listen how we can start to make our communities suicide-safer!

Are you a member of a faith community? Has your community had members struggling with depression or the thoughts of suicide? Please take the time to share this critical program to your faith leaders!

Seth Rockwell, a Friend from the Road, joins us this week to chat about vanlife and the love for the great outdoors. At just 21 years old, he is living an amazing journey already full of adventures. Some of us at some point in life have had thoughts of traveling the country maybe the world in a similar fashion. For any number of reasons, we find ourselves on a different path. This does not mean you cannot fulfill that dream at some point though. If you enjoy life in some of its simplest forms this could be just what you are looking for!

Seth and I met just outside of Moab, UT at Willow Springs BLM under unique conditions. Neither of us expected to meet up again for lunch a week later. The adventure he was on was epic and spontaneous, but the most spontaneous thing occurred after! Seth was heading West originally but he changed his plans to go back East in hopes to make it for a certain event. What would be so important? Hang on as we discuss that and other changes that have happened since leaving Utah. We discuss the future and the movement ahead.

What is Van Life?

Thomas Elpel of Green University connects with the Movement Monday series! Episode 7, I want to thank you for listening to this point! Tom was recently awarded writer’s digest’s first place in nonfiction for his natural history travelogue, “Five months on the Missouri river: paddling a dugout canoe”, a work that I am thankful to be featured in. Our guest partnered with Churchill Clark, the great-great-great-great grandson of Captain William Clark of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Together they whittled and carved a 10,000 lb. log into an over 500 lb. canoe used for the journey.

Tom is known as an "Ecopreneur". He is an author, builder, conservationist, and a pioneer in experiential education through his Green University. We discuss the importance of developing a deep and interactive relationship with nature. Thomas shares how we can foster our connection to the environment and find our place in the ecosystem through hunting, gathering, and learning primitive skills. Let's find a balance between modern and primitive lifestyles. Learn new skills from Green University whether in the immersion program or a class! We all have room to learn about nature and the way life was for humanity for many years.

Family ADDventures, Nicole Santiago, joins the Movement Monday series to discuss “Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder” (ADHD). Keep focused as Nicole discusses the different types of ADHD. Just how many types are there? Listen as she explains each one and gives examples. She discusses her own experiences with ADHD as a daughter, a parent, a wife, published author and a coach. I forgot to mention she does all of these things just like anyone else but she too has been diagnosed with having ADHD.

ADHD cases have been described as far back as the textbook published in 1775 by Adam Weikard in German. Yet, the stigma still exists and the general public has little understanding of ADHD. Pay attention because it can impair major life activities including social, emotional, academic, and work functioning when gone undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. When diagnoses/understanding is known this can led to improved ways of life through treatment, coaching and a self-understanding. We discuss important information about ADHD and the facts that you may be unaware of. Join the movement to change the cycle of shame and bring change to the Stigma of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Alex had travelled 19 states by the time he met up with me in Moab, UT. None of which he planned to originally do and he is doing lots of new things these days! We replayed the Forrest Gump Hill scene and crossed into my 44th state together! We parted ways with no plans to see each other again, at least for a while. Well I ended up beating him to Flagstaff, AZ, but not in our traditional bicycle method but because of a Medical Flight. We kept in touch throughout the process and he even made a delivery to the hospital for me with some of my favorite snacks. We had the privilege to connect yet again while at the Lakeside Studio, this time in his 22nd state and his longest time on the road, EVER.

Listen as we discuss what inspired the current bicycle journey that he is on, after just completing his first trip. Alex talks about how his plans were halted in the last moments before starting his great adventure! This didn’t stop him, sure the plan changed but the movement was the same. Along the journey he was surprised when he got to follow someone he considers a personal "hero" and "professional bicycle tourer"! They got to meet and spend 10 days together. Listen for how the journey has gone so far and what the plan has in store for the future. Alex tells us how things have changed since meeting one of his "heros". Not all movements are the same but they all have the power to make change!

Welcome Everyone to “Movement Monday” a NEW series on “Heart of a Volunteer: Veterans Podcast” with me, Daniel Hurd. This series is a way to continue my movement for Suicide Awareness, after the accident that left me unable to continue my own physical movement after 44 States, nearly 18,000 miles and over 2.5 years on a bicycle with Ride With Dan USA. It also made it difficult to continue to share my own Movement for Suicide Awareness, One Pedal At A Time (OPAAT) Movement. HOV gave me a place to heal my body and “HOV: Veterans Podcast” gave me a way to continue moving but in a different way. If you’ve dreaded your Mondays before, I want you to look forward to them here with guests on movements that are powerful and inspiring!

What is Movement? You could read one of the many definitions available in the dictionary, but instead listen as we explain our definition for what movement is on this series. What started this movement in the first place? A bicycle, a cause and a stopover in Mobile, AL. We talk to a special guest that explains what inspired his involvement with starting the OPAAT Movement! The movement has changed, but the mission stays the same, bring awareness. We talk about Livingworks, and OPAAT gives the listeners an opportunity for something FREE! We’ll talk about some of the guests we will have on from friends from the road, volunteers making a difference, movement starters, and even some of those hopefuls that we hope to have on the show, including a confirmation during the show!
