On this episode Tim sits down with the leader of American's United, Rachel Laser, to discuss two recent landmark Supreme Court rulings that have major implications that affect us now and in the future.

Rachel and her team represented Bremerton School District in the recent SCOTUS case Kennedy Vs Bremerton School District. In this case a high school football coach was praying with students at the 50 yard line after games and the school said he couldn't do that while coaching. He refused to comply, was placed on paid leave and then chose not to renew his contract. He sued in lower courts and lost. A powerful shadow network of conservative evangelicals funded the case up to the SCOTUS where they ruled in the coach's favor.

Rachel unpacks why this ruling is unprecedented and also unpacks the court's decision to overturn Roe V Wade.

Jemar Tisby, author, scholar, activist and student of the renowned author and scholar Dr. William Pannell, discusses racism within Evangelicalism based on the book by Dr. Pannell, The Coming Race War. Jemar, gives the history and background on his mentor, Dr. Pannell. He explains how in 1992, Dr. Pannell identified the crisis that white Evangelicalism continues to ignore about racism both in secular society but also in Evangelical theology and churches. Tim and Jemar explore how that lack of identification of black voices within Evangelicalism makes it difficult for white Evangelicals to hear their position on racism. Jemar, explains how historical context is important to understand the current minimization of racism and its implications on society as a whole. Jemar, also explains the whitelash, or the silencing of black voices on this subject, and how it hinders the work that Jemar and other black scholars/activists/theologians do. Ben Cremer, historian, pastor and friend, breaks down the beginnings of the movement historians later called Evangelicalism. Tim and Ben, start from the beginning in pre-Civil War America and how people like Charles Phiney saw the ills within society and decided to apply their Christianity to the community around them. Ben, explains these Revivalists, as they referred to themselves, saw slavery, women’s subjugation and the predatory practices of the rich on the poor as immoral. This led to the Second Great Awakening and the abolitionist movement. Tim and Ben, examine how this idea led to modern beliefs that differ so much from the original movement. The book Discovering an Evangelical Heritage by Donald W. Dayton is also discussed and its importance in understanding early Evangelicals.

On this episode I'm joined by Melanie from the Holy Heretics Podcast and Katherine from the Uncertain Podcast where we discuss the most recent episode from the Rise and Fall of Mars Hill featuring Josh Harris. In the Rise and Fall of Mars Hill, host Mike Cosper interviews Harris where they talk about church celebrity culture, deconstruction and Josh's rise in Evangelicalism. As the episode comes to a close there were some troubling statements made about deconstruction and the Evangelical Church so we recorded this episode to respond to them.

I highly recommend listening to the most recent Rise and Fall of Mars Hill Podcast episode for context.

Michael, from The Honest Youth Pastor, sits down with Tim and discuss how the The Honest Youth Pastor came about. Michael, explains what he believes is the Biblical model for the church. Tim and Michael, also discuss how the issue of static doctrinal statements within churches can be problematic and helpful. Michael, explains how the issue of information overload in deconstruction, can often create confusion for a believer. He also found that Progressive Christianity was more harmful than Fundementalist Christianity. He and Tim, debate the spectrum between those two extremes and the need for discussion and education for informed decision-making

Megan Madsen, a Wesleyan theologian, discusses with Tim whether or not social justice is Biblical justice.  From the Hebrew Bible to the Gospels, Megan breaks down how Judaism viewed injustice and how God expected Israel to respond to oppression of any kind. Megan, also reorients believers to an oppressed centered gospel in which the Spirit of God moves through a believer and accomplishes good deeds through them. She points out that modern Evangelicalism is centered on the white, male, heteronormative, Christian, captialist model and the gospel must benefit that believer. This is in contrast to the believer being beneficial to those around them, especially the most vulnerable in society.

Dr. Katie, professor and researcher as well as master level yoga instructor, breaks down how Evangelical spaces can co-opt our identities and provide breeding grounds for abusive authority. Dr. Katie, explains early childhood development and how that creates our formation of identity. Identity, she argues, influences what kind of relational intimacy we have as adults. Tim and Dr. Katie, explore how churches, by their very nature of subjective truth, have a greater influence than authority figures who operate from objective fact. This pushes the average church goer to conform. Dr. Katie and Tim, look at how to do embodiment integration especially for women in deconstruction spaces who were survivors of spiritual abuse/trauma.

Jamin Andreas Hubner, professor and researcher of economics , breaks down what capitalism is and how it isn’t compatible with a Biblical ethic. Jamin and Tim define some of the economic terms used in Evangelical spaces and what they really mean. They also explain how capitalism creates a coercion of labor due to the inequities in an economic system based on the employee and employer model. Jamin, then, describes an old buy forgotten model of the cooperative model in business and how it better meets the Biblical ethic of loving your neighbor.

Sheila Gregoire, author of The Great Sex Rescue and the Facebook page To Love, Honor and Vacuum, is back to break down the misleading issues in Evangelical literature about marriage and sex. Beginning with her background, Sheila explains how the book The Great Sex Rescue became one of the first comprehensive scientific surveys on Evangelical Christian women’s sexual mental well-being and pleasure. Sheila and Tim explore the myths and harmful influences of these well known marriage books by Evangelical Christian authors.

Show NotesSheila, begins by giving background on how her venture into the world of Christian women’s sexuality began. She explains how the book The Great Sex Rescue came about. Her research for the book used the first of its kind scientific survey to gauge women’s sexual satisfaction, women’s marriage health and women’s overall view of sex. Sheila, identifies four problems within the literature of well known Christian authors: The most damaging being sex is primarily for men, women were experiencing pleasure 47% less than the rate of their husbands, physical explanations for lack of pleasure not addressed, and myths about women’s sexuality. Sheila, goes on to explain how those books were not scientifically analyzed but used faulty interpretation of the data of peer reviewed material. Tim and Sheila look at the myths promoted in these well known books such as: Men have no self-control and therefore their wives must satisfy their sexual needs without a consideration of their own, issues of consent in marriage exploited by these authors, the dehumanization of men by portraying them as sex crazed maniacs, and how a woman’s painful intercourse isn’t tied to her need for non-intercourse stimulation.

I came across Matthew Boedy when I read an article he wrote critiquing Charlie Kirk’s rhetoric. I had to bring Professor Boedy on to ask him why he has an entire website devoted to Charlie Kirk and what his thoughts were on the resurgence of Christian Nationalism. Because Professor Boedy teaches rhetoric at the college level, we also dug in to talk radio and what makes their style of rhetoric so successful.

For those who don’t know, Charlie Kirk is one of the most influential and popular conservative commentators to come up in recent memory. He started a network called Turning Point USA which has a massive social media presence and is devoted to upholding Trumpism and conservative values.

This is a new series that I will be doing throughout the New Evangelicals Podcast. I believe it is essential to dialogue with the other side of the Chrsitian spectrum, to ask questons and to hear what they have to say. On this episode I interview Samuel Deuth who is a Pastor at Awaken Church in California. Samuel believes that Christians should resist tyranny and oppression by resisting mask wearing both and inside and outside buildings. Samuel’s Church has hosted Charlie Kirk and will be hosting Candace Owens this summer. I had a lot of questions for Samuel and he was kind enough to come on to answer them.

I interviewed the father of deconstructing (my title not his) Dr. David Gushee and let me tell you friends, it did not disappoint. David is well known in academic circles for writing several textbooks that are still widely used in colleges today including the book Kingdom Ethics. However, over time, David found himself more at odds with the fundamentalist take over the evangelicalism and when he wrote his LGBTQ affirming book, changing our minds, he was promptly kicked out. Since then David has spent his time writing After Evangelicalism and giving the deconstruction community better language for what they’ve experienced.
