When you look up “Personal Jurisdiction” in Black’s Law Dictionary, it directs you to the entry for “Jurisdiction.” We won’t do that to you. We’re here because there’s not enough good information available for law students and new attorneys to make informed choices about their careers.
Join co-hosts Allison Freedman and Hallie Ritzu as we talk to a variety of people within the first 10ish years of practice to hear about their journeys to fulfilling careers and the advice they have for getting there. From government to start-ups; politics to academia; in-house to legal aid—we’ll get the scoop on what it’s really like to work in different areas of the law, so you can chart your own course for success.
E.K. McWilliams leads Strategic Response for Block (formerly Square), a financial technology company that provides payment, banking, and consumer financial services. In that role, E.K. provides counsel in connection with complex investigations, external inquiries, and proactive regulatory compliance initiatives.
Before joining Block, E.K. was Chief Regulatory Counsel at Green Thumb Industries, and an associate and then partner at Jenner & Block in Chicago. Prior to law school, E.K. was also a field organizer, a community organizer and research analyst, and Chief of Staff for the Wisconsin State Legislature.
E.K. has a Bachelor’s in Philosophy from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a Masters in Comparative Social Policy from Oxford, and a JD from the Northwestern Pritzker School of Law.

Jennifer Belmont Jennings is an estate planning attorney at MGD Law in St. Louis, Missouri.
Prior to her current role, Jennifer was a wealth advisor at Wells Fargo Advisors and Hightower Wealth Advisors, both in St. Louis. Jennifer is a Certified Financial Planner. She is also one of the co-authors of Women in Law: Discovering the True Meaning of Success. Jennifer is a committed community volunteer, and serves on the Board of Directors of YouthBridge Community Foundation and Fathers and Families Support Center St. Louis, and Rooted Sisters. She was recognized as a St. Louis Business Journal 40 Under 40 in 2020, and is a member of the Estate Planning Council of St. Louis.

Elissa Knoff is a partner at Bookoff McAndrews, a boutique patent counseling and prosecution firm in Washington, D.C. In her role at the firm, Elissa counsels companies on developing and leveraging their patent portfolios. She represents clients ranging from startups filing their first patent application to Fortune 500 companies. Through secondments, Elissa has worked in-house at a major medical device company. Prior to entering practice, Elissa served as a law clerk to the Honorable Timothy B. Dyk at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. After her clerkship, she worked as a patent litigator in BigLaw.

Sherri Burr is the Dickason Chair and Regents Professor Emerita at the University of New Mexico School of Law. Sherri joined the UNM faculty in 1988, after receiving her bachelors from Mount Holyoke College, a master’s in International Relations from Princeton’s School of Public and International Affairs, and her JD from Yale Law School. Sherri was the first African American woman to receive tenure and promotion to full professor in New Mexico.
Sherri has taught intellectual property, art law, entertainment law, wills and trusts, and international law, among other courses. She has also authored and co-authored over thirty books, which have won numerous awards. Her 27th book, Complicated Lives: Free Blacks in Virgina, 1619-1865 was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in History.
Sherri has also frequently written items for the general public, and even produced and hosted her own television show—ARTS TALK, which won numerous New Mexico and National Federation of Press Women Awards. She has served on countless boards and associations, including serving as president of the New Mexico Black Lawyers Association, and her current service on the boards of the Albuquerque Museum and the Authors Guild Foundation.

Victoria is a global government enforcement attorney at Trafigura in Geneva, Switzerland.
Before her current role, Victoria was an internal monitor and senior legal counsel at HSBC in London. Victoria has experience in private practice both in the UK and in the US. She was a white collar attorney at Steptoe and Johnson and at Katten in Chicago. She has experience guiding financial institutions, multinational corporations, and senior individuals through government and internal investigations, regulatory enforcement actions, and commercial litigation, with significant monitorship experience.

Michael Bloom is the founder and CEO of Praktio, an interactive online learning platform for training in contracts, transactional skills, and litigation skills.
Michael has also served as a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan Law School, where he founded and directed the Transactional Lab & Clinic, as a Lecturer in law at the University of Chicago Law School, and as an associate at Sidley Austin.

Patrick Maillet is currently Government Relations Counsel at the Legal Services Corporation (LSC) in Washington, DC. LSC is the largest national funder of civil legal aid for low-income Americans, ensuring equal access to justice for those who need it most. Since it was established by Congress in 1974, LSC has operated as an independent nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, providing essential grants to support high-quality civil legal assistance for individuals facing economic hardships.
Prior to this role, Patrick was earning his JD from the Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law in the evenings while also working full time during the day for U.S. House Representative Betty McCollum. Patrick started his work in the house as a legislative correspondent. He later become a legislative assistant, and after graduating from law school in 2021, he took on the role of legislative counsel for Representative McCollum. In addition to his current role as counsel for the Legal Services Corporation, Patrick also joined the United States Army Reserve as a Judge Advocate General in 2024 and continues to practice this work, as well.

Clare Diegel is the Director of the Professional Standards Division at the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office in Minnesota. Prior to this role, Clare was a staff attorney at the ACLU of Minnesota, and a public defender in both Minnesota and Seattle. Clare also clerked at both the federal district and circuit court levels, first in the Central District of Illinois and later on the Ninth Circuit. Between her two clerkships, Clare worked at Kirkland & Ellis in Chicago.

The Honorable Kevin Newsom is a graduate of Samford University and Harvard Law School. After law school, he clerked for Judge O’Scannlain on the Ninth Circuit, and went on to clerk for United States Supreme Court Justice David Souter. Between and after his clerkships, Judge Newsom worked at Covington & Burling in Washington, D.C. In 2003, he was appointed the State of Alabama’s Solicitor General. And in 2007 he returned to private practice, this time in Birmingham Alabama, until 2017, when he was appointed to the Eleventh Circuit.
Among other things, Judge Newsom is known for his exceptional legal writing, concurring with his own opinions, and promoting a fun and welcoming yet rigorous chambers environment.
Karissa Kang is a 2024 Yale Law School graduate, and is now clerking for Judge Newsom on the Eleventh Circuit. During law school, Karissa was the Editor-In-Chief of the Yale Law & Policy Review. She also spent her summers working at Susman Godfrey in Houston, Texas; Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz in New York City; and the New York State Attorney General’s Office in their Antitrust Bureau.

Christina Otero Geeza is a partner at Otero Geeza Law in Miami, Florida. She has a broad corporate practice with a concentration on various types of lending transactions and real estate matters, as well as trust and estate matters.

This episode was created in partnership with the University of New Mexico School of Law’s Association of Public Interest Law (or APIL) and New Mexico’s very own Equal Access to Justice. APIL provides funding and education related to public interest law to UNM’s law students. And EAJ supports some of the most important public interest organizations in the state, including New Mexico Legal Aid, the New Mexico Center on Law and Poverty, and DNA People’s Legal Services.
Importantly for this episode, APIL and EAJ have teamed up to provide scholarships for students to undertake important public interest work during the summers while they’re in law school. Alicia was one of last year’s recipients of an APIL Fellowship funded by EAJ. During her fellowship, Alicia worked at the Southwest Women’s Law Center, an organization the provides free legal services to Native women experiencing domestic violence and/or intimate partner violence.
Alicia was also recently selected to be part of the Community Governance Attorney Program, which was established by the New Mexico legislature in 2019 to provide legal services for land grant, acequia, and colonias communities. She will serve these communities while working at New Mexico Legal Aid following graduation.

Jeremy Wilson is VP of Legal at Fabletics and TechStyleOS in Los Angeles, California, where he has worked for over three years. Amy Chua is the John M. Duff, Jr. Professor of Law at Yale Law School where she teaches contracts and international business transactions, among other things. Her areas of expertise include international business transactions, law and development, ethnic conflict, and globalization and the law.
You may also recognize Amy as the author of the international bestselling memoir Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, which was translated into 30 languages. Amy’s most recent book, The Golden Gate, is a historical murder thriller set in the Bay Area.
Amy is a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School, where she served as an executive editor of the Harvard Law Review, and was the first Asian-American to serve in that role. Amy started her legal career as a law clerk on the D.C. Circuit, and went on to practice at Cleary Gottlieb. She then joined academia in 1994 and has been a professor at Yale Law School since 2001.

Rebecca Petrilli graduated from Wittenberg University with a BA in English and Art History, then received her JD from Case Western Reserve University School of Law. She is a first-generation lawyer and one of very few people in her extended family to receive a bachelor's degree. She's worked for Themis for six years and, before sitting for the bar exam, was a Themis Rep in law school (all three years). She used Themis for the MPRE and the bar exam, passing both on the first try. She's passionate about helping students pass the bar with as much ease as possible. She enjoys reading, gardening, and spending time in nature.
Taylor Williams graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2015 with a double major in psychology and legal studies and a certificate in criminal justice. In college, she worked in two psychology labs - one studying psychopaths in prison and the other working at Mendota Mental Health Institute, which is the inpatient hospital where people who successfully pled insanity are treated. She earned her JD from Georgia State College of Law in Atlanta in 2019 and was planning to continue working in family law, but everything changed after she failed the Georgia bar and her boss cut her salary by roughly 30% with no warning. When she switched to Themis to prepare for the UBE, her score went up 26 points, and she passed in every UBE jurisdiction. She attributes her success on the bar exam to Themis's MBE performance data and director support. At the time we recorded this episode, Taylor had worked for Themis for over 3 years as a Sales Director. She has since moved to a new role as an attorney recruiter with Skywater Search Partners. Roshanna K. Toya is an enrolled member of the Pueblo of Isleta where she was born, raised, and resides today. She currently practices civil rights, criminal defense, and Indian law at Rothstein Donatelli in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Before going into private practice, Roshanna clerked for the New Mexico Court of Appeals and the U.S. District Court for the District of New Mexico.
Roshanna is also familiar with the internal workings of tribal governments as she has served her Pueblo as an associate justice for the Isleta Pueblo Appellate Court since 2013. She now serves the Pueblo as the Chief Justice of the Appellate Court. There she presides over cases related to probate, domestic relations, criminal law, employment law, and any other types of disputes that are appealed from the tribal court.
Roshanna is a 2005 graduate of New Mexico State University, where she earned her Bachelor of Criminal Justice. She also earned her Master of Criminal Justice and Master of Social Work from NMSU, and she is a 2019 graduate of the University of New Mexico School of Law.

Serge Martinez is a Professor at UNM School of Law, where he teaches, writes and practices in the area of housing law, with a focus on the rights of renters and improving housing stability. He has served as Associate Dean for Experiential Learning since 2019, meaning he heads up all of the clinic and externship programs at the law school. In 2020, Serge also helped launch Amparo, a nonprofit that assists renters facing eviction and supports tenant organizing in Albuquerque.
Before joining the faculty at UNM, Serge taught at Hofstra University School of Law and National Taiwan University College of Law, and worked as a senior staff attorney at the Urban Justice Center's Community Development Project, where he represented tenants and tenant associations in New York City. Serge is a graduate of Yale Law School and Brigham Young University.
Elizabeth Elia is an Associate Professor at UNM School of Law, where she Elizabeth teaches courses related to property law, land use, real estate development, renewable energy development, environmental law, poverty law and clinic. She is also an active participant in shaping housing policy in New Mexico at both the state and local levels.
Before moving to New Mexico in 2017, Elizabeth worked in D.C. as a transactional lawyer specializing in the development and preservation of affordable housing across the US and its territories and served on D.C.’s Affordable Housing Strikeforce. Elizabeth holds an LLM degree from Georgetown Law, a JD from American University Washington College of Law, and a BA from New College of Florida.

Lauren Myerscough-Mueller and Megan Richardson are both Staff Attorneys at the Exoneration Project, a non-profit based in Chicago, Illinois, which provides free legal services to fight for the wrongfully convicted and free the innocent. Since its founding in 2007, the Exoneration Project has exonerated more than 200 clients.
Prior to starting at the Exoneration Project, Lauren represented the wrongfully convicted at the Illinois Innocence Project, and practiced as a criminal defense attorney in the Chicago area, both as a private attorney and a state public defender. She has also been an adjunct professor at the University of Illinois Springfield and the Southern Illinois University School of Law.
Megan started her legal career at Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP in New York, before becoming a Clinical Fellow in the Innocence Clinic at the University of Michigan Law School. In that position, she worked with students to represent the wrongfully convicted and co-taught a clinical seminar encompassing both substantive law and lawyering skills.
Lauren is a 2008 graduate of Washington University in St. Louis and a 2014 graduate of the Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law. And Megan is a 2008 graduate of the University of Michigan and a 2015 graduate of the University of Michigan Law School.

Leon Howard is the Deputy Director of ACLU of New Mexico (ACLU-NM). After graduating from the University of New Mexico School of Law in 2009, Leon worked as a staff attorney for ACLU-NM, concentrating on First and Fourth Amendment cases. Next, he left for the private sector where he continued to focus on civil rights. In 2018, Leon returned to ACLU-NM as Legal Director, where he led the affiliate's legal department and litigation efforts. Now, as Deputy Director, he facilitates the organization's legal, policy, and communications departments. Leon is a board member of the New Mexico Innocence & Justice Project, past co-chair of the New Mexico State Bar Committee on Diversity (8 years), part-time faculty at the University of New Mexico, and Past Vice President of the New Mexico Black Lawyers Association. In 2020 Leon was awarded with the New Mexico State Bar President's award for his commitment to improving diversity in the legal profession. When Leon is not immersed in civil rights issues in our community, he is either walking his dog, Kaepernick, or working at his tougher jobs--being a husband, father, and setting perfect fantasy football lineups.
Sovereign Hager is the Legal Director of the New Mexico Center on Law and Poverty. She has more than 10 years of experience working to advance economic and social justice. In the last five years, as an attorney at the Center, she worked extensively to increase access to public benefits in state and federal court, as well as in community, administrative, and legislative forums. She is an established expert in New Mexico on the complex regulatory framework for public benefits programs, eligibility for families that include immigrants and frequently provides expert testimony to the legislature. Ms. Hager has secured major court victories on behalf of her clients to increase access to food and medical assistance, drivers’ licenses, and other programs. Before joining the Center, Ms. Hager worked for two years on the Navajo Nation for DNA People’s Legal Services’ Medical Legal Partnership, where she handled a broad range of legal issues impacting the health of patients at an Indian Health Service facility. Her advocacy included public benefits, domestic violence, special education, housing, and consumer and workers’ rights. Ms. Hager has past advocacy experience working to improve farmworker pay and living conditions and enforcing fair housing laws. Ms. Hager is a graduate of Syracuse University (J.D., M.A.).
Riley Masse is the Housing Stability Managing Attorney at New Mexico Legal Aid. Riley is a graduate of the University of New Mexico School of Law. She was a member of the first class of Fellows for Transformative Advocacy at UNM Law.

Andrew Herrington-Gilmore is the Associate General Counsel of the Chicago Bulls. Prior to his work at the Bulls, he was an associate in Chicago at both Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP and Paul Hastings LLP doing primarily mergers and acquisitions and private equity work. Maria Griego is the Director of the New Mexico Center on Law & Poverty’s Economic Equity Team. In this role, she works to expand and protect access to safe and affordable housing in New Mexico and eliminate unjust fines and fees imposed by the legal system. Maria has been at the Center since 2014, and previously worked in both the Healthcare and Public Benefits teams where she focused on improving hospital financial aid policies and increasing access to child care assistance and Medicaid.
Prior to joining the Center, Maria practiced family law and served as a volunteer family court settlement facilitator helping parents reach mutual custody agreements in the best interest of their children.

1️⃣ "Nobody's life is perfect." - LinkedIn profiles and resumes tell a story but they don't tell the whole story - we all have successes, failures, setbacks, and personal problems that impact the decisions we make about our careers.
2️⃣ "There is no yellow brick road." - Your first job might not be your dream job. Your dream job may be different than what you imagined in law school.
3️⃣ "Embrace change." - It's okay to switch jobs. It's okay to pursue a new area of the law long after you graduate from law school. You don't need decades of experience to be able to try something new.
4️⃣ "You shouldn't do it alone." - Mentoring, networking, and friendships make all the difference in finding new opportunities, dealing with difficult work environments, and feeling connected to a professional community.
5️⃣ "What does success mean to you?" - Our favorite question on Personal Jurisdiction! This quote from Anna Quindlen sums it up perfectly: "I am successful on my own terms. Because if your success is not on your own terms, if it looks good to the world but it does not feel good in your heart, it is not success at all."

Karla Johnson is a Senior Staff Attorney with the Kinship Caregiver Law Project at the New York City-based civil legal services organization, Mobilization for Justice (MFJ). She has spent the last 3 years representing grandparents, siblings, aunts/uncles and fictive kin in custody, guardianship, and foster care cases. She also represents clients in special immigrant juvenile and adoption matters. Prior to her work in kinship care, she practiced in MFJ's special education law group for about 6 years.
Karla is a 2006 graduate of Smith College where she earned her BA in psychology. Karla earned her Master of Public Health in Health Behavior and Health Education from the University of Michigan School of Public Health in 2014 along with her JD from the University of Michigan Law School that same year.

Bridgette Carr is a Clinical Professor of Law and the Associate Dean for Strategic Initiatives at the University of Michigan Law School. She is also the founding director of the Law School’s Human Trafficking Clinic, the first clinical law program solely devoted to addressing this issue comprehensively. Bridgette is also a first generation college graduate who wasn’t sure law school was for her. She didn’t so a journal or apply for a clerkship, and instead spent her spare time during law school working at a local legal aid office and an asylum shelter. Despite now being an expert on human trafficking, Bridgette hadn’t heard of human trafficking work until after she graduated from law school.
Vivek Sankaran is also a Clinical Professor of Law at the University of Michigan Law School. He directs both the Child Advocacy Law Clinic and the Child Welfare Appellate Clinic, through which law students represent children and parents in trials and appellate proceedings. He is also a father of three boys, he loves coaching youth sports, and he is learning to play the guitar.

Noah Nix is a third year law student at the University of Georgia School of Law in Athens, Georgia. Currently, Noah is serving as a legal intern in the Appellate & Trial Groups at the office of the Federal Public Defender for the Districts of Colorado and Wyoming. Jonah Perlin teaches legal practice and advanced legal writing courses at Georgetown Law as a full-time Associate Professor of Law, Legal Practice. In this week's episode, the fifth and final episode in this series, Jonah speaks with Doron Gold, a psychotherapist and former practicing lawyer (primarily in the area of family law) from Toronto, Canada. Doron works primarily with lawyers, law students, and judges as well as other professionals. His personal experience working in the legal profession, coupled with his many years of experiences working with lawyers in distress at the Ontario Lawyers' Assistance Program (OLAP) give him a unique and valuable perspective on the challenges faced by these individuals. In addition to treating lawyers, Doron presents regularly on issues related to mental health for lawyers. Bridgette Carr is a Clinical Professor of Law and the Associate Dean for Strategic Initiatives at the University of Michigan Law School. She is also the founding director of the Law School’s Human Trafficking Clinic, the first clinical law program solely devoted to addressing this issue comprehensively. Bridgette is also a first generation college graduate who wasn’t sure law school was for her. She didn’t so a journal or apply for a clerkship, and instead spent her spare time during law school working at a local legal aid office and an asylum shelter. Despite now being an expert on human trafficking, Bridgette hadn’t heard of human trafficking work until after she graduated from law school.
Vivek Sankaran is also a Clinical Professor of Law at the University of Michigan Law School. He directs both the Child Advocacy Law Clinic and the Child Welfare Appellate Clinic, through which law students represent children and parents in trials and appellate proceedings. He is also a father of three boys, he loves coaching youth sports, and he is learning to play the guitar.

Leah Litman is a Professor of Law at the University of Michigan Law School. She teaches and writes on constitutional law, federal courts, and federal sentencing. Her research examines unidentified and implicit values that are used to structure the legal system, the federal courts, and the legal profession. Leah’s scholarship has appeared in several top law reviews. Her work also appears in popular media, including The New York Times and Slate.
Leah is also the co-host of Strict Scrutiny, a popular podcast about the United States Supreme Court and the legal culture that surrounds it. Strict Scrutiny has a different voice–one that celebrates the contributions and opinions of women and people of color. She is the co-creator of Women Also Know Law, a tool to promote the work of women and non-binary academics. Leah also maintains an active pro bono practice. For example, she was part of the litigation team in Garcia v. United States, one of the successful challenges to the rescission of the DACA program, for which the team was recognized as California Lawyers of the Year.
Prior to her position at Michigan Law School, Leah clerked on the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals and on the United States Supreme Court. Following her clerkships, she worked at WilmerHale in D.C. She was a Climenko Fellow and Lecturer on Law at Harvard Law School, and an Assistant Professor at the University of California, Irvine, School of Law. Leah has won several awards for her teaching--in 2021 Michigan Law students awarded her the L.Hart Wright Teaching Award, and in 2019 she won the Professor of the Year Award while at the UC Irvine School of Law.
