This time around there are Just two main items on the agenda - The Empress Elizabeth’s ongoing, and so-far frustrated efforts, to secure the Romanov succession and the political machinations and intrigues that would eventually lead to the outbreak of the Seven Years War.
Oh and finally and as indicated by the title there is someone from outside of Russia who gets to play quite an important and intriguing role in our proceedings.

It's January 1744 and Peter Fyodorovich the heir to the Russian throne and his aunt Elizabeth have got some German visitors to entertain and one of them is the almost 15 year old Sophie Friederike Auguste of Anhalt-Zerbst. In the meantime Prussia and France are again plotting against Bestuzhev and the Austrian empress, Maria Theresa, has her eyes on Silesia.

Today in a slightly longer episode than normal we’ll be covering the period between October 1740 and December 1741 which is 15 months and not a year but I think you’ll agree that ‘The 15 months of living dangerously’ doesn’t quite have the same ring to it.
In this episode, we’ll be concentrating on further events centred around the Russian court in St Petersburg, which taken as a whole, and as per the deliberately mysterious and enigmatic episode title, may or may not point to the beginning of the end for the Miloslavsky branch of the Romanov dynasty.
Diplomacy with with the Persians, war with the Ottomans, an outbreak of Bubonic Plague and reform on the home front - plus I pronounce 'L'Hermitage' in a really strange way...
After a couple of decades of peace most of Europe get's back to a more normal state of affairs with The War of the Polish Succession.
Meanwhile back in Moscow, Anna had her own succesion decision to make and Elizabeth Petrovna needed to be careful.

This time we start off with an outline of the Byzantine empire and a look at what was going on down there around the time, or just prior to, the foundation of Novgorod
And then we’ll take a look at the ‘discovery’ of a new Rus base and then finally we’ll check out what was going on in Novgorod and what Rurik was up to (and spoiler alert - it’s not a lot but there is one notable event).
At last the chronological narrative begins and we’ll be investigating how and when and by whom, the first proto-russian political entity, of a sorts, was founded.
We’ll also look at the different chronicles and sources that track the history of the period, spend a bit of time looking at their background and then look at some of the issues these sources present and try to piece together what probably happened.
And finally we'll do a whistle stop tour around Europe and Asia and see what’s going on in the year 860.
This time around I’ll be looking at the historical background, covering a vast period that will start way, way back when the first known human habitation occurred in the area we now know as Russia.
And along the way we’ll meet Neanderthals, Denisovans, Proto Indo-Europeans, Kurgans, Scythians and Slavs
I’ll end-up some 1.5 to 2 million years later just prior to the birth of the first political entity or state that was considered to be proto Russian.
In the first of two scene setting episodes we are going to start off with a high-level look at the geography of Russia pointing out the main features which will hopefully serve as a useful backdrop for future episodes.
