The temple of Jerusalem had been rebuilt but the fortifying wall lay in ruins thus it had no protection. Nehemiah led efforts to once again build the wall and to secure the city. Our lives to lay ready for attacks from opposing forces. We need protection from the Lord's Word and means of grace, without them we are sitting ducks for the enemy.

The name of God is never once mentioned in the book of Ester however, do not think that it’s pages are not teaming with our Lord’s story. Here we see a queen willing to give up everything to save her people, later we witness a King (Jesus) who too gives his all to save his people.

Both Zechariah and Haggai sought to have the people rebuild the temple. This endeavor was both important but also served a sign of something more important to come. We too have been called to build, to not be afraid, while simultaneously remembering what is most important, that which God has dedicated to us. May we worship him both here on this earth and in our heavenly home.

God did many miracles though his messengers. On many occasions it would seem as if they were done for, outnumbered, or a lost cause, but God in his infinite power reveals himself in their weakness. It was love at first sight! Boaz and Ruth were married and had a son. The women of the city celebrated Naomi's joy, for Naomi had found a redeemer for her family name. The child was named Obed, whom the reader discovers is the grandfather of King David (Ruth 4:13–17). Jesus is your kinsman-redeemer! Christ came to us while we were still sinners.

During the time of the judges in Israel, the cycle of rebellion, consequences, repentance, and restoration – over and over again – leads us to wonder about the intelligence of our ancestors in the faith. But we are no different then they were when it comes to trusting God and living out His will for us. Disobedience leads to punishment, followed by repentance, which leads to deliverance!

Well, today it seems we have come to a detour in The Story. The people of God are a road trip. And on this trip they are going to get themselves into a heap of trouble. Like passing a driver’s test today, there are simple things to keep in mind. Don’t be afraid to ask for directions. And remember, others are in the car with you!
Moses really values the presence of God. He knows when God is down in the middle of our lives, we will receive blessing. He wanted that for himself, and he wanted that for the people he leads. Moms and dads, you want that for yourself, but you also want that for the children you lead.

During the centuries of slavery in Egypt, it seemed God remembered His promise to make the children of Abraham great in number, but it also seemed that He forgot the promise to make them great, to make them blessed and a blessing. Bitterness that’s left unchecked can grow deeper and deeper, robbing you of the life God desires for you. All bitterness starts out as a hurt. God’s Word for today will help us the next time we feel angry or resentful, to prevent a seed of bitterness from being planted in our hearts.
Do you have a difficult time being wrong? Why do you think that is? Jesus was the most right and least judgmental person who ever lived. We should live the same way because we don’t change people by judging them. We change them by loving them.
How do you typically respond when you get angry or offended? This Sunday we will think about how we could respond with love instead. God’s Word shares some ways we can protect our mind, heart, and mouth from unwholesome talk. Being offended is inevitable. Living offended is a choice.

Loving God with all our mind is done when our thoughts dwell on Him – His holiness and goodness and love and mercy and beauty… Then we respond with prayer, praise, singing, and worship. When we love Him, it causes us to desire to know Him more, to know Him better, and to discover what blesses Him.

Paul was uncompromising, committed, and staunch. As a Jewish leader, from the depths of his soul, he fought against the Christians and their message of Jesus’ resurrection. “Stop doubting and believe!” Jesus said to Thomas. Prepare for an emotional roller coaster. The great and holy week begins with the cheers and seeming triumph of Jesus' entry into Jerusalem. No sooner, however, do we say, "Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord" than we realize we have been ushered to the foot of the cross and the darkness of the shocking outcome of His coming – suffering, hatred, blood, and death. Our joyful, hopeful expectations have been dashed and we have been reduced to despair. This is what John the Baptist meant when he called us to repent. So He will take the repentant, tearful soul and restore life in the resurrection, life even better than we had ever dreamed or hoped. Life doesn't always turn out the way you expect! Despite human scheming, God had in mind a plan for His Son. While some would lay the blame for Christ's death on the mob at hand and the seemingly relentless and fated chain of events, Jesus indicates that He is not the helpless victim of circumstances. He is willing to proceed to His sacrificial death outside of Jerusalem, and then as He said, "on the third day I will reach my goal." Claudius took a liking to him until Valentine tried to convince him to embrace Christianity, whereupon Claudius refused and condemned Valentine to death. Valentine refused and Claudius' command was executed outside the Flaminian Gate February 14, 269. In every generation martyrs have testified that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and Savior of the world. Without their testimony, where would we be?! Have you ever had a house guest that overstayed their welcome? Maybe it was guests who didn’t have the best manners or respect for your household. Maybe you had guests that were visiting for Thanksgiving and all you could think was “next time they are staying in a hotel!” Jesus seemed like he was a guest coming into our world when in reality he was the owner. He was patient, caring, honoring, and much more but was still hated and eventually killed. God could have evicted us at any time but instead gives his one and only Son that we may receive an undeserved inheritance.

Have you ever planted a small fall garden before? Maybe you were trying to grow squash, sweet potatoes, pumpkins, you name it. Well if you have most likely you know the frustration of weeds growing in your garden. They can look unsightly and attempt to deprive your intended crop of needed nutrients. Yet in the end your seeds will prevail. In our parable for today Jesus describes both the righteous and the unrighteous who simultaneously live in the world. As Christians we must both be on our guard and keep the faith knowing that our God has and will further prevail.

There were many different types of metal armor invented in the Medieval Ages. As weaponry advanced so did the evolution of armor. Many different setups were created for a variety of battle situations. We don’t always think about being at war but Paul reminds us not to become complacent. Let me tell you, it works great, until someone refuses to yield or doesn’t take the initiative to merge. Often the concept of yielding or submission, especially in the union of marriage receives a bad rap. However, it is a major tool God equips us with to promote healthy marriages expressing mutual love.

As a child it bothered me when someone would copy what I was doing. Finally one day my dad said “didn’t you know that imitation is the highest form of flattery?” And he was right, imitating the behavior or actions of another is to pay them a compliment. Paul calls us as the church not to imitate the sinful ways of this world but to be imitators of God, children of the Light.
