As humans, we often have the propensity to get in our own way - to self-sabotage, self-destruct, and throw away our potential because we’ve lost sight of our real purpose. Today’s guest, Derrick Moore, knows all about that. A recovering addict, author, and motivational speaker, Derrick is here to talk all about what it takes to change your life and get out of our own way and why God is all about second chances. You’ll be inspired by this conversation!

Redemption stories are a big theme here at Grace Moments. We believe in the power of hope and God to bring good out of any pain or personal failure and love having guests on who personify these truth. Today’s guest is no exception. Tullian Tchividjian was a well-known pastor, author, and speaker with a pretty good faith pedigree to boot as the grandson of Billy Graham. But a very public downfall left him with a broken life, broken family, and no ministry. Having recently written a book in which he vulnerably lays out his failures and the journey to forgiveness and redemption he’s been on since, he’s kindly agreed to sit down and talk about what he’s learned and how he’s experienced the mercy of God. Regardless of what you may have heard in the past about his story, I hope you’ll listen to his thoughts today as he shares his journey, his passion for helping others discover God’s radical grace, and how the faith community can be better at confession and forgiveness.

There are sadly moments in our human experience where it becomes evident that a season of our life is coming to an end... where a goodbye you never thought you'd have to say is inevitable or a painful but necessary walking away has to take place. In one way or another, it has become clear that you don't belong "there" anymore. Bad breakups, divorces, getting passed over for a promotion at work, moves, friendships going sour, job changes - all these things test how gracefully we can transition from one chapter to another. And this episode gives you some key lessons that will help make this a bit smoother.

Prayer can seem so ordinary and so routine if you are a person of faith who shares a relationship with God. It is natural to utilize prayer to petition or bless Him for various situations in this life. But sometimes there can be a limit to how honest we're willing to get with Him in our prayer life, almost like we've placed a holy limit on how raw and real it's okay to get with God about ourselves and circumstances. This episode explores our need for unedited prayers and why practicing candidness is not only alright but invited by Him. Come, let's spend a few minutes together and perhaps discover a deeper honesty in our conversations with the Divine.

Each one of us keeps our own personal trophy case in our heart where passions or meaningful achievements live. While it is great to be proud of things we've accomplished, if our successes are all that define us, we will be disappointed and let down when we feel others haven't validated those successes as we'd hoped. We can also sometimes start to treat our faith this way as if bringing our trophies to God somehow earns us special points. This episode discusses why God alone should have your heart and why it's important in life to do things "as unto the Lord and not for human praise."

As we encounter personal, spiritual, relational, and overall general challenges in life, it can be easy to become cynical, jaded, and despairing about the condition of others, ourselves, and even life itself. Differences in opinion, practice, personality, and even the existence of pain and loss can get in the way of finding the good around and within us. This episode is a caution against allowing the bad parts to cloud and overshadow the good ones and why negative thinking always has to be held in check. There are moments in life when we all come across problems that seem to be far too insurmountable - situations that, to the human perspective, feel impossible. And sometimes, these can lead us to question if said circumstances are too hard... even for God. In this episode, we'll tackle the issue of unbelief and why knowing the dependable track record of God is key to having hope and good mental health. Home is a place many of us have mixed feelings about: some have pleasant memories, others do not. We have a mixed and complicated relationship with doubts. We all have them but we also despise them because they scare us and cause us to ask things that make us uncomfortable. Especially in faith circles, doubt can sometimes be looked down upon. So this episode aims to untangle misconceptions surrounding doubt and help us see the helpful place these questions have in solidifying our beliefs. Easter is coming up, and this episode is a refreshing reminder that God's redeeming work isn't just relegated to Him alone - He invites us to join with Him in the restoring plan He is working out... one that is constantly ongoing and active. And because He rose, we have hope and can rise and be transformed in our own lives. If you're struggling with old patterns that die hard or pain that seems pointless, you will find this uplifting.Visit and subscribe to my blog at: www.graceopens.blogspot.com Twitter: @opentograce2015 Instagram: @opentogracealaska Parler: @Opentogracealaska MeWe: Katherine Singer
Gardening terms are often commonly used in Bible passages as ways for God to describe His cultivating and transformative work in our lives. But, in today's not-so-agrarian world, we can be a bit removed from these metaphors and the picture they produce of our own hearts and journeys. Today's episode shows you a handful of lessons we can learn from gardens about spiritual growth. Whether or not you're into gardening yourself, you'll find this encouraging. While less familiar to the faith community now than in generations past, the hymns have offered a solace for people in suffering that few other things can afford. Perhaps surprisingly, many of the authors of the great hymns we know were themselves individuals who struggled greatly with pain and problems. This episode is a reminder that your situation is no different than that of others, and you are not alone in what you are going through. With it being Valentine's Day this week, today's episode is dedicated to the topic of relationships... but particularly, people-differences in relationships. God has created each one of us as unique persons with our own ways of doing and thinking and being but sometimes, those differences, however attractive initially, can become incredibly annoying over time. In this episode, you'll learn about how to see both yourself and others in a new light, hopefully leading to better communication, compassion, understanding, and healthier community as we learn how to "love one another" in the ways we each receive and give it best. All of us deal with anger at different times over different things. Some of it is warranted and some, not. Most of the time, our anger ends up hurting ourselves and others instead of being harnessed to point us toward deeper things that must be addressed. Anger is built into us to be our warning sign, yet we often ignore it as such. In this episode, you'll find a frank discussion on what science and faith have to say about anger and why getting control of it is so important. Common things like loss, trauma, transition, health problems, and adversity of any kind are certainly frequent and obvious contributors to mental distress. But what the health industry doesn't often talk about are the subtle things in our daily routines and diet and products that are equally, if not more so, adding to the mental issues we are dealing with. Today's episode touches on some surprising data and discoveries that prove the healing changes we need may not involve such drastic intervention - they can simply be done at home, given the proper knowledge. Suffering has a way of skewing our view and sowing lies in our mind that things are so bad they can never get better. It's a common, human problem to assume the worst after you've experienced the worst. But hope means we keep turning our faces into the dark and believing that the pain won't last forever, and sun will shine again. Digging into the wisdom of a 19th century poem, this episode will look at why it matters so much that you wait expectantly for the dawn. People using religious means to emotionally hurt and manipulate others is becoming a real concern in communities of faith. And the even more disturbing thing is that churches and faith leaders are turning a blind eye to it and are ill-equipped to handle it. This episode is a candid discussion with previous guest Rachel (Redman) Skidmore about how to address this and why the faith community needs to become a house of hope instead of a house of pain. We all love lightbulb moments - times when we suddenly see things with clarity like never before. We also love it when it happens to someone else. But the truth is, we can’t rush that moment. Nothing we say or do will bring it any faster because each of us has to be ready to accept and understand that reality and sometimes, coming into or being brought into that reality before we’re ready does more harm than good. A key facet to achieving mental wellness is learning the value of non-negotiables - identifying and sticking to certain principles that are unwaveringly true parts of who you are, what you believe, and how you desire to live your life. Many of us, sadly, compromise these things in an effort to please others and end up becoming a version of ourselves that isn't authentic and real. This episode will encourage you to unashamedly live out the things that mean the most to you and to not be afraid to pay attention to that gut instinct that God put inside you to help guide you on the way. Worry is a real thing, and many of us deal with it on a regular basis. The problems we face can appear to be so pressing, so strong, that we forget to put them in perspective and instead, stress ourselves out over things that God has already told us not be anxious about. Worry is bad for our brains, for our overall health, and for our souls. And, in today's episode, we're going to be talking about how to deal with this issue and rediscover our peace in the midst of an anxious world. In times of extreme hardship, it can be difficult to remember that outsiders are watching how you handle what you're walking through. The way in which you carry your pain can reflect for good or bad on the faith you hold and the God you follow. Understanding this gives a whole new perspective to how and why you go through painful times - this isn't just about you and your own growth but also about making much of God and putting Him on display to a despairing world. This episode helps widen your view on suffering and remind you that the purposes of God for taking you through challenges are always bigger than you realize. It's common for those going through loss to have to process insensitive, awkward comments, suggestions, and opinions from others who have either not gone through something similar or who have forgotten what it felt like. These remarks can often be incredibly draining and distracting. Today's episode is aimed at helping those looking in from the outside to understand what grief is really like and why their compassion is so essential to helping the mourner move through their loss well. Human nature is prone to admit need or acknowledge weakness while also not being ready to accept the help or do the hard work of necessary change. In the mental health industry, many therapists and counselors see this problem often. The degree to which you're willing to take on the difficult work of healing is the degree to which you will recover your life and well-being. This episode is a challenge to those who are perhaps sitting on the fence regarding needed changes in their lives - an encouragement that the uncomfortable but necessary steps toward wholeness are always worth the time and effort. In a fast-paced world where nearly everything is accessible at our fingertips and we can obtain instant food, information, assistance, or experiences immediately, the average person has lost something of the ability to be patient and let things run their course. Past generations were, perhaps, better at allowing life to develop and trusting God for answers to prayer or resolutions that seemed impossible. For this episode, you will be reminded of the simple truth that, with God, delays don't always mean denials and sometimes, God intentionally lets things take longer in order to work out His perfect plans. Often, when it comes to anything worth appreciating, things take time. And we would do well to join with God in that timing and wait well for the eventual outcome. Mental health research in the past several years is further exposing and emphasizing the critical link between a child's growing up experience and their eventual mental wellbeing (or lack thereof!) in later life. Studies show that how a little one is raised, for good or bad, shapes their overall perspective and their coping mechanisms that they will use to combat stress, suffering, and relational problems as they age. Many people who later seek counseling or therapy acknowledge that their issues stem from negative childhood patterns and experiences. This episode helps give parents, future parents, and individuals some tools that will make parenting kids (and yourself!) easier. This is a must listen for all who want to understand the link between childhood and mental health. Much of life's journey is a movement from the house of fear - where concerns and doubts and worries and questions reside - into the house of love, where God lives: that place of home where we are free to be authentically ourselves and are taught how to do life in a new way... a way filled with gratitude, hope, joy, closeness, and fruitfulness. Sadly, many of us, even if we have begun this journey, still find ourselves emotionally and spiritually homeless. We need to be brought deeper into the house of love so we can taste even more what life in our Father's care is all about. This episode explores the difference between the two houses and why the house of love is for all prodigals searching for a place to belong. Let's face it: sometimes there are seasons in life when we're just simply not okay. Crisis points happen and losses surprise and love fades and betrayals abound and pain occurs that threaten to tear us to shreds inside, and we're not sure we're going to make it... or even how to deal with and process what has taken place. Suffering has a way of stripping us of all forms of security and causing us to doubt if there truly ever is a sunrise on the other side of this darkness. A 19th century hymn-writer once wondered that too and today, we take a look at his story and how he found a way to sit with his sorrow while also choosing to still believe in his God. Even when you're not okay, there's a way to still be okay because God has promised it will be. Not that things will get better immediately or that everything that happens is always good, but there will be a day, one day, when you realize you made it. And in this episode, we'll talk about how to hang on until that happens. We live in an instant results society. Most of us, admittedly, aren't that great about being patient and holding out for the things or results we most want. Contentment isn't exactly our strong suit. But when it comes to certain things in life, waiting is the only way forward. There are situations that come up where all we can do is pray... and be still until God gives us an answer. And sometimes it can be extremely difficult if, after doing all that - and maybe for an extended period of time - God's outcome or response isn't what we hoped for. This episode aims to help us learn how to wait well. To exercise patience and to practice contentment when it feels like time is running thin on if (or when) you'll get an answer or resolution. If we're going to grow as people and know how to keep the faith when it seems like God is dragging His feet in certain areas of our life, we need to understand what it means to have hope when God delays. Music has been shown to be a powerful aid in the maintenance and rebuilding of mental health. Scientific tests show that listening to music and specifically, the art of singing, do wonders for calming down our central nervous system and resetting the functions of the brain in times of stress. This obviously isn't a new concept as many passages of the Bible were written around varying aspects of song: praise and worship as well as laments. In this episode, we discuss the power of music to ground us in difficult times, using the chorus of a recently-released Christian song. You'll be reminded about the things that hold true regardless of the challenges life brings and that a risen and reigning Lord who loves you is always something worth singing about. The unpredictability of life can often make us feel like we're at the whim of uncontrolled chaos and pain, left to fend for ourselves on a sea of suffering with no end in sight. Hard times happen and sometimes, they come in ways that confuse us and make us question the hand of God in their midst. How you view the sovereignty and rule of God over the happenings of the world and your own individual life will often determine how you interpret the meaning behind what is happening to you, someone you love, or even the world in general. And this episode will specifically focus on Psalm 97 as a blueprint of how to better understand the workings of a righteous, just, and loving God amidst the sin and suffering of a fallen world. This world offers us so many opinions, perspectives, unsolicited advice, and agendas. There can be a whole lot of voices that speak into our lives, framing our identity (for good or bad!) and shaping our inner voice by which we talk to ourselves. Both our own inner voice and the voices of others can be extremely powerful, creating the lens through which we see life. And those voices can also be projected onto God and determine how we think He talks to us as well. What voices you are most tuned into and how you speak to yourself, as well as how you think God speaks to you, impact your outlook more than you know. That's why this episode will unpack the weight behind these voices and help you figure out how to untangle the ones that need to be muted in your life so you can better hear the voices that matter. Most of us look at healing of any sort - physical, emotional, spiritual, mental - as being a destination. We picture it looking a certain way and find ourselves incredibly disappointed or even angry when it doesn't go the way we hoped. We've been taught to see healing as this end in itself rather than realizing that it's actually a process, a journey. Healing doesn't always mean the wound goes away or the cure is found. Healing is actually about trust and growth and learning to be refined in the midst of what we go through, even if the scars remain or the pain never go away. Since today's episode falls on Valentine's Day this year, its focus is around the larger concept of loving well - of what we ought to be praying for and desiring for one another, regardless of what sort of relationship we may be in. We were designed BY Love and FOR Love, and it is imperative that we reflect that in the way we invest in each other as friends or family. We are created to exhibit the heart of God in how we interact yet sadly, most of us practice relationship on a far more superficial level than He intended. Paul's prayer for the Ephesian believers so many centuries ago still rings true as a model of how God wants us to intentionally invest and build connection with one another. Today's episode will offer a lot of perspective and motivation when it comes to going deeper with the people in your life! Leaders of any kind play a bigger role in the mental health of those they're in charge of than perhaps they really realize. Many don't understand how certain policies or approaches to running things may be negatively affecting those under their direction, causing unnecessary confusion, frustration, or emotional hurt. This episode is primarily aimed at leaders who want to better understand how to make changes in their workplace environment so that those who work for them are able to thrive and enjoy their job rather than be crushed by it. If you're a business owner, executive, pastor/ministry leader, athletic coach, military officer or NCO, teacher, or even just a parent or somebody looking to create a healthier atmosphere for those you care for, this is really worth a few minutes of your time. You'll take away some ideas that just might totally transform the work experience for those you lead! Memories can be powerful things. They help us stay connected to deeply impactful parts of our stories and who we are. God designed our physical brains to be able to store and pull up important images, feelings, sensory experiences, and sounds that help us tap into things, people, and places worth remembering and learning from. But what about the memories that you'd rather forget? What about the things that are hard to forgive? What about the memories that kinda feel stuck inside your mind and you've yet to make peace with them or find a place for them in your life's landscape? Today's episode goes personal and draws from some thoughts I've had recently on reconfiguring memory - of how to reframe painful situations and choose how you want to travel with that memory going forward, however difficult it was. This is an important truth to sit with, so take a few minutes and listen in! Psalm 23 is one of the best-know and well-loved passages of Scripture. Many quote it or recite it in moments of difficulty. Many learned it as children. But how many of us have actually stopped to do a deep dive into the truths contained in this short but powerful few verses? There are many cordials of comfort here for us to glean from, particularly in times of uncertainty or pain in our lives. In the seasons where it's easy to forget the goodness of God, Psalm 23 reminds us of what we can depend on and cling to, even when life is difficult or unknown. Today's episode takes a look at these truths and consoles our heavy, anxious spirits with the assurance of the Good Shepherd's provision, protection, and presence always. As we've just rung in a new year, many people are setting goals for themselves - New Year's resolutions - for 2023, and most of those goals include variations of trying to live a healthier, less distracted, more focused life. However, weeks down the road, a lot of folks have fallen back into their old routines and given up on the objectives they set for themselves. Every person, if they were honest, is probably living way below the potential and capability they have and have chosen to settle for the career and the life available to them instead of what's actually possible. This episode unpacks some of the common distractions and diversions that keep us from chasing the big, bold, beautiful life God intended for us and why it would do us all some good to take a step back from our normal rhythms and ask ourselves what life could look life if we gave ourselves permission to go after what truly fulfills and inspires us. Many mental health issues stem from an unhealthy relationship with boundaries - either an established boundary has been violated or there never was one put in place to begin with. Most of us have never been taught the valuable impact of having healthy limitations in our lives, particularly relationally, that guard our limited yet precious inner resources and help us operate from the best of ourselves. Today, this episode looks at why boundaries are both biblical and essential for mental health and how we can establish them in a loving but honest way. All of us have storms we go through in life, some easily passed and others, endless. But either way, they are inescapable. Sadly, many don't ride out the storms that well and end up nearly drowning in their force. Using the example of the eagle, we'll go through some practical lessons on how to not only navigate the storm but also, to rise above it. Last year, my New Year's episode centered around a metaphoric "pile of stuff" I personally had to tackle come 2022. In that podcast, I shared about all the things I emotionally and mentally had to overcome in order to be "ready" to do the hard thing and close a bittersweet chapter in my life. I also challenged you to tackle your own infamous pile of stuff in the new year in hopes that we could keep each other accountable and inspire one another to get past what was holding us back. Now, I'm here to update you how my own journey with this went and hopefully encourage you that doing the hard things, however unpleasant, always pays off in the end. Welcome to a special Christmas episode of Grace Moments, where we'll discuss the reasons why the arrival of Jesus in human form so long ago gives us both hope and strength for the personal challenges we face today. The simple fact that God loved humanity enough to send His own Son to earth in order to accomplish redemption's plan is proof that there is no length He won't go to in order to be with us and be Himself for us in whatever we're going through. Even if the holidays are hard for you this year, this episode will uplift your spirits as you reflect on the birth of Christ and the true reason for the season. So many of our struggles can be traced back to fear on some level, and most of us aren't taught how to properly engage fear in the way it deserves. Today's episode is going to take a look at the life of a man who knew about fear on a massive scale: multiple threats to his life, political upheaval, captivity... he saw it all. Yet, he understood how to combat his fear with truth, and there's a lot we can learn from his example. Come, take a few minutes to glance at the biblical story of Daniel and discover why it's possible to get a grip on the fears in your own life. In many situations, assumptions equate with a certain level of trust - by assuming something, we're placing some confidence or assurance in it. However, when it comes to the ways of the human heart, assumptions can be deadly. Where it involves the core relationships between ourselves and others or ourselves and God, assumptions can literally destroy trust and create distance between us and those we care about most. If we don't learn how to grow our own curiosity and make room for alternative story lines, we can damage connections in ways we would never dream or desire. Today's episode walks you through the importance of having an open mind instead of jumping to conclusions, especially where it involves somebody with a difficult past or mental distress. Understanding how to ask more questions instead of thinking you have it all figured out will save you a world of pain moving forward. For many, the holidays are a special time of celebration and tradition, of joining with loved ones and making memories that only come around once a year. Unfortunately, others don't have quite the same relationship with this season, and there is a lot of sadness, loneliness, depression, or confusion that comes with it. Past experiences or current hardships have made it difficult for them to appreciate and enjoy the holidays with any sort of pleasure. It's just a stretch of time to get through and cope with. This episode addresses this discrepancy and why it's important to come up with a game plan for how you're going to survive and salvage the holidays, even when it looks different from everyone else. Today, you're going to be given permission to create a meaningful season for yourself that reflects your story and your feelings and you'll also be encouraged to look for Jesus in the midst. Welcome to episode #100 of Grace Moments! Thank you to everyone who has tuned in and supported it thus far. Cheers to many more!
When life is relatively easy, thanks can be a fairly obvious response. When God's gifts come in the form of answered prayers and favorable outcomes, we can quickly sum up the gratitude due to Him for working on our behalf. But when life gets hard and what comes from God's hand appears ugly and undesirable - when results aren't what we hoped they'd be, and pain is wreaking havoc on our life - thanks isn't often our natural response. It feels abnormal to bless God in the face of great trials and suffering. But the Bible's command and the science's data show us that gratitude is the way through shattered things. That God often gives some of His most precious gifts through the broken way and the more we learn to see and believe this for ourselves, the more we are able to walk into challenges with hope. Today's episode shows us some ways in which we can get better and practicing thanks in all circumstances and thus, fulfill God's will for our lives.

The human brain and heart is wired for love, created for attachment and affection at its most basic level. God made us with the ability to desire closeness and acceptance. Sadly, many of us experience failures in this quest for satisfaction and turn to things like sex, money, careers, food, or even substance abuse to fill the longings of our heart that only God can meet. We've turned His good gifts into the ends in and of themselves that we convince ourselves will quench our inner thirst for contentment and peace, missing out on the real and true gift God wants to offer us: the gift of Himself. This episode explains why, if you keep drawing from the wells of human relationships, financial gain, worldly success, and the like, you'll continually keep coming up empty. But if you draw from the well of salvation and come to find your rest in the arms of the Giver of life abundant, you will never thirst again.

As we've discussed many times on previous episodes, your thoughts are extremely powerful...and not always very productive or positive. How you manage your mental attitude and the beliefs and information you allow into your brain on a daily basis determines what kind of person you're becoming - for better or for worse. Most of us don't realize the role that we play in being a sort of gate-keeper or guard over our thoughts, checking to see if what is coming in is helpful or hurtful. Today's episode is going to give you tools on how to capture your thoughts - like taking prisoners in a war - and make sure that the beliefs you repeat yourself and the things you let in will allow you to find the abundant life Jesus spoke of and the life you most want to achieve.

Grief is such a complicated and difficult process. Anyone who has encountered loss knows that it can be such an unpredictable, challenging journey as you try to make sense of what has happened and somehow figure out a way to move forward. But something many circles fail to address is the role that our core beliefs we bring into that loss inform and shape how we view it. Depending on whether they are true or false, those key thoughts and concepts determine how we grieve - how we see God in the midst of it, how we make space for our emotions, how we discover good as a result of it, how we grow from and in it. Without a proper analysis of our most basic perceptions about God, suffering, ourselves, and life, grief will inevitably expose the gaps in our theological thinking and threaten to drown us in a sea of doubt and fear. This episode will be help those grieving to identify the faulty thinking that may be intensifying their anguish as well as prepare those who will grieve to walk into it better prepared.

Pain is a harsh but factual reality in all our lives. Yet many of us struggle to properly accept it or know how to develop an honest relationship with it. We find ourselves wrestling with the paradox that we can't escape it while also realizing that it has the capacity to help us grow and transform. Understanding how to relate to and harness the existence of pain in any form is a tough but necessary part of developing mental, spiritual, and emotional wellness. Because without pain, so much about who we turn into as people would be discounted. This episode talks about how the testing in your life shapes you and why developing a healthy connection with the presence of pain has the power to unleash great potential in our lives if we let it.

Words are powerful! They have the ability to wound or to heal, to lift up or destroy, to enforce lies or to speak truth. Within the God-made vehicle of communication exists an entity that can either help us move our stories forward or keep us stuck in our past - can either kill or resurrect, speak death or speak life. Whether these words are aimed at ourselves to toward one another, the principle remains the same: how you use your words matters. Today's episode explores the power of words and their impact and why each of us needs to be aware and careful about the stuff coming out of our mouth each day. Because the truth is, our actual and literal health depend on words and how they're used.

Most of us admit, at some point, that we want to change something about our personal life. We all make resolutions to "do better" and may even follow through for a bit of time. But realistically, many don't have the discipline nor the determination to actually stay the course and allow our lives to be transformed for the better. We can talk a good game but then fail when it comes to sticking out the process and letting growth do its work in developing habits and choices that reflect the life we say we want. In order for us to find personal peace, spiritual vitality, and mental wellness, we have to be willing to take ownership for our part in that journey. Just saying we want to change won't get us where we think we desire to be. This episode is a challenge to anyone who's been sitting on the fence when it comes to following through on changing their life and a reminder that real transformation begins with you - the attitude you bring, your desperation for help, and your ability to cooperate with the assistance God and others give you along the way.

Everyone has their version of what the ideal life looks like. Everyone wants a "happily-ever-after" ending to their story when it comes to love, meaning, and personal success. Yet so often, we are confronted with the reality that we don't always get the perfect outcome that we wanted. Sometimes we must face and accept the painful fact that the hopes and dreams we had have cruelly fallen apart. This episode delves into this dilemma and why we actually are foolish to expect our perfect ending here in this broken world but also why there is a true "happily-ever-after" awaiting us in eternity if we will simply adjust our expectations and hold out for it in the meantime.

Like all trees and shrubs, pruning is a necessary aspect of keeping our souls thriving. This sometimes involves painful and difficult situations that we'd rather avoid. But unless we are willing to welcome the refining work of God in our lives, none of the suffering we endure will make sense and we won't develop the strength to cut away things out of our own lives that no longer fit the larger purpose. This episode takes on a quick crash course in gardening and a lesson in John 15 about how and why God prunes us in order to grow us, change us, and help our lives to become fruitful in the long run.

In order to really understand people and know how to help them through a time of crisis, we have to be students of them. We have to learn how to read the subtle because there will be times when others hide behind a mask and are afraid to tell us the truth. Becoming a pursuer and not a pry-er is a delicate yet necessary thing. Today's episode discusses how to observe and learn to pick up on the silence of others as well as their words - to realize that it's not always what they are saying as what they aren't saying that matters most.

Part of discovering mental wellness is learning to get honest with yourself, others, and God about the un-named things in your life - the things that are uncomfortable to talk about, painful to remember, and that carry with them so much embarrassment, shame, and guilt. Today's guest has personal experience with this on a level most of us couldn't imagine. She's a college student, a rape survivor, and a beautiful soul who's proof that you can emerge from your tragedy stronger, braver, and more resilient. Most of us have moments when we just don't like ourselves. We get tired of dealing with our own drama and the complicated inner workings of our deepest souls. We get discouraged at ourselves, angry at ourselves, impatient with ourselves and this frustration can spill over into how we treat those around us too. In a word, we can often feel - untamed. Like untrained animals with wild sides we don't know how to control and are at the mercy of. This episode gets real and honest as we talk about how to deal with the complicated parts of ourselves, how to give ourselves grace to be human along the way, and why blaming others for your own problems is never the answer. Knowing when to walk away can be one of the hardest things to ever figure out. Whether it be in relationships, employment, ministry, or personal achievement, making the decision to quit can feel like failure. But what if learning how to walk away could set us free? What if giving ourselves the option to let something go in favor of a better thing held the key to maintaining healthy boundaries and quality of mental, spiritual, emotional, and physical health? Using the analogy of a sinking ship, this episode will unpack why knowing when to walk is crucial to your personal quality of life and property stewarding and being true to who you really want to become. Handling criticism and judgmental attitudes plays a big role in mental health. If we trend toward being critical or judgmental toward ourselves and, especially toward others, that's a reflection of some unhealthy patterns in our brain and emotional well-being. If we've been the recipient of it, it can cause damaging effects on our self-confidence, peace of mind, and overall quality of living. Knowing how to work through criticism and judgmental behavior is essential to having a healthy mental and emotional attitude. Understanding how to let certain things go and to become more curious about others and their stories is vital if we are to maintain vibrant relationships throughout our lives. This episode helps you learn how to become more gracious and openminded toward others' differences as well as forgiving when others don't tolerate and understand your own.

Surprises are fun when it involves something pleasurable or desired. But when surprises come in the form of tragedy, loss, or unexpected pain, we often look for a way of escape. We like the unanticipated when it's something we find enjoyable but we'll fight it just as quick when it arrives in a way we don't like. Seems our response to surprise is mixed. But what if we began to look at all of it - both the fun as well as hard surprises - as ultimately good? What if our approach to the sudden could determine whether we viewed life as an adventure or a threat? This episode focuses on how God uses the unexpected to grow our faith and why surprise is necessary for a complete and enriched life. Everyone gets discouraged sometimes, particularly when it comes to how they think they're doing in their walk of faith. Falls and fails happen to us all the time, and it's easy to think that God's love or acceptance fluctuates with our performance. Believe this long enough, and doubt and hopelessness can start to sink in. Perhaps this is you, and you need some real, down-in-the-bones inspiration today to remind you that God keeps you, loves you, and upholds you through all the twists and turns of life. Today's episode will hopefully encourage you that you are safe and secure in Him, fully and forever and that nothing you do or anything that happens can ever change His love for you or remove you from His care. Mental health has become an increasingly bigger topic in recent years and well it should! We definitely need more awareness out of there of the emotional struggles people go through and to let them know it's okay to not be okay and to talk about their difficulties. There certainly should be more conversation around finding solutions to these issues, and Christian circles are primed to be on the front lines in fighting the mental health stigma. After all, God intended His Church and His family to be a place where broken people can be heard and healed. But in order for this to happen, compassion needs to be accompanied by action. It's not enough to just recognize the problem... especially if God has equipped you on some level to help. Today's episode talks through Jesus's way of meeting needs and why one-at-a-time love is the way to solving the mental health crisis in the long run. In many cases, our perceptions go beyond just shaping our reality to actually BECOMING our reality and sometimes, inhibiting us from the life of bold faith and trust that God wants us to have. We look at situations and come to false conclusions that, in the moment, seem real but ultimately keep us from noticing God's sovereignty, care, and control. Fear is easy, but faith can be hard... because fear is our default and faith must be learned. In this episode, you'll be reminded about what it means to check your perceptions at the door and take a hard look at what is REALLY going on - to look up instead of pay attention automatically to your internal "Look Out!" and be willing to see your circumstances as God sees them and not just what it looks like from your personal perspective. Have you ever thought about the role quiet (or lack thereof) plays in your mental health? Scientific research shows that even just a few minutes a day of solitude does wonders for helping the human brain process and properly store information, thus greatly affecting your overall wellbeing and the shape of your thoughts and actions. Sadly, our society doesn't encourage quiet, and most of us are at a deficit when it comes to having enough stillness in our daily life to really effect any positive change. In this episode, we're going to look at both medical and biblical proof of why quiet matters and how we can not only incorporate it but also learn to cherish it as a way of life. What do you do with the perceived (or actual) negatives in your life? Do you detest them? Avoid them? Resist them? Or do you incorporate them as a vital aspect of your personal growth? Challenges and trials of any kind are never fun and often, in the moment, it's hard to see how they can produce any lasting good in our lives. But what if those very things we deem worthy of avoidance at all costs are actually the things that can't be avoided if we're to become people of strength and resilience and hope? Today's episode uncovers the secret power of hard things and, with some metaphoric help from old photography, why supposed negatives can actually lead to positives. For many people struggling with mental wellness, lack of purpose is a big issue. Perhaps the hurtful actions or words of others or the doubts and fears within prevented them from discovering their purposes or at least caused them to lose sight of it for a time. Learning how to rediscover (or find out for the first time!) what drives you to get up every day, what motivates you to learn, serve, and grow in your life is a huge part of healing and progress in the mental wellness journey. Understanding that God has mapped out a beautiful path for every person and that all particulars flow from a bigger meaning is key. In order to live a productive and fulfilling life, you have to know your why. Today's episode will unpack how to discover this for yourself. Emotions. Feelings. What complicated things they are! Unpredictable, unruly, challenging. It's hard sometimes to live with and deal with yourself in all the twists and turns that come with being you. It can be frustrating and downright frightening to face the jumble that is your inner life and to give yourself grace and permission to feel and experience things you'd rather run from and avoid. Pressure of some sort happens to all of us, and most people would admit that the last couple of years have brought an even greater share of it. And not everyone has responded well. While there are always going to be moments of intensity and testing in life, and we can't often anticipate how or when they'll come, we can always control our reaction to them. All of us come up against hard transitions in life (either by choice or forced upon us) that challenge our identity and make us grieve a necessary ending. At the same time, such times can cause us to pursue new chapters and develop greater resilience and be open to opportunities we might never have found otherwise. Back in the day, newspapers used to have an "Opinion" section where personal viewpoints were voiced for the public to read and reflect on. In today's society, we now have the internet for such things. However, the world of social media and instant news have taught us how to readily give our take on something without giving space for other ideas and making room for the unique journeys of other people. Some have become walking POEs (personal op-eds) that force their views on others - critics who cross the line of constructive advice and actually undermine the God-given passions and dreams of others by their refusal to hear another perspective. This episode will teach you how to edit your critics, thanks to the wisdom of former Olympic champion, Scott Hamilton and why learning how to respond to the nay-sayers in your life can lift your mood and give you the confidence to chase God's plan for your life unapologetically. At some point in our lives, all of us experience rejection. Someone lets us know, in no uncertain terms, that we've failed their expectations and aren't enough. But, when it happens, it can mess with our confidence and our overall mental well-being. Today, we're going to address this and how to move forward after you've been excluded, kicked out, and pushed aside. You've likely had conversations with others who were going through a hard time and felt at a loss for words regarding what to say in response to their suffering. And the easiest answer you've been able to come up with is, "Have you seen a professional?" It's become an easy way for us to pass the buck when it comes to being there for those struggling, assuming the so-called "experts" can do a better job at listening and supporting than we can. But what if God specifically sent that person to us and gave us a special divine assignment? What if we began to live with a "why not me?" attitude and opened ourselves to the possibility that we can offer more to the hurting than we give ourselves credit for? Today, we're going to be talking about living life with your eyes open - about making room for the possibility that you can do much more for the broken ones along your journey than you think and why it just might change your own life if you welcomed the opportunity to let God use you instead of letting your personal discomfort get in the way. Is it found in the impressions we create on social media, or how we're viewed by others? Our society certainly thinks so. But what if the thing that makes for true beauty was actually authenticity? Do you ever struggle to get past the voices in your life that have held you back? Have you come across people in the past that always talked-down your biggest dreams or squashed your greatest ambitions? Many times, people don't realize just how much such comments have taken a toll on their mental wellness and they've given up pursuing the things that most make them tick, turning them into somebody they don't even recognize simply because others told them it was too hard or too impossible or they'd never make it. Chasing after your God-given abilities and goals is part of the adventure of life and nobody else has the right to determine where you end up except God and your own effort. This is YOUR life, so let's take a minute to re-take some power from those memories and re-visit what you might've given up on, to ask if that could actually hold the key to your greatest purpose. It's an inevitable fact of life that we will find ourselves, at some point, in the dark: perhaps about our faith or ourselves, about God or about situations. We will struggle to face our fear as we're presented with circumstances that bring to the surface every insecurity and question we've ever had. We'll battle doubt as all the truths that were once so clear now seem obscured. Learning to walk with God in the dark is challenging in every way, but it's an unavoidable reality. Today's episode dives into the contrasts of a God who is both Light of the World and a God who hides Himself. A God who speaks openly in the brightness of day and a God who also meets us at night. Talking to God honestly matters. Sadly, most of us feel like we need to sugar-coat our petitions because we think certain things are "off-limits" when it comes to conversing with God. Truth is, there's nothing we could ever say that He doesn't already know. And, when we go to Scripture, we discover that candid prayers are not only accepted but encouraged when it comes to how we talk to God. Today's episode will encourage you to be blunt with God, to practice the art of lament, to speak openly with your Heavenly Father, knowing that you are intimately seen and known and that nothing you confess or verbalize can ever cause Him to turn away.

All of us have, at one time or another, held on too long when we should've let go...kept on saying yes when we should've stood our ground and said no...remained in a situation rather than cutting ties and walking away. There's guilt associated with admitting something has run its course - a feeling as though one has failed even if you did your absolute best or succeeded at the endeavor. Truth is, sometimes endings are necessary. Without the ability to end something, we never grow. Real change happens when we're willing to take a leap and walk away from even good things or things we deeply treasured in order to obtain the best things - the truly important things. Today's episode aims to inspire you to be willing to do the hard thing - to turn loose and trust that the finality of one season of your life will only lead you into the next.

How did you deal with the reality that, instead of the answer you'd wanted to receive, you were given a Divine "no?" Today's episode discusses the fact that we all face circumstances where it feels like God's will is against our own, but what we do when we're up against that determines much about how we grow through pain. Learning to accept the "if not..." in each of our lives is key to discovering more about how God works and how He wants us to trust Him even when things don't make sense.

Everyone's fears can often be traced back to a single lie. For all the ways fear may manifest itself, there is often one, big fear-giant that summarizes them all. Today, we're going to be talking about (and hopefully identifying) the fear-giants in our lives with the goal of gaining greater insight as well as a proactive plan on how to face and fight that fear with faith. It's time to take down some Goliath's, so let's get to it!

The Summer Olympics kick off later this week and we're taking the opportunity to explore the concept of success: how our culture views it versus how God views it. Today, we're going to be redefining success. I hope you'll join me!

Many Christians believe that doubt is wrong - that, once conversion has happened, faith should be easy and we should never question God. But if we look at Scripture and practical, personal experience, we discover an entirely different picture: doubt is common, and it is natural! Doubt is a part of the realistic human story. Yet it's what we do when we doubt that makes all the difference. Today, we're looking at how to believe when you dis-believe and why doubt can actually prove to be the deepening of your faith.

We all have chapters in our stories that we're afraid to reveal. There's a part in each of us that just wants others to see the best aspects of ourselves - our successes, our achievements, our talents - and wants to hide from them the worst - our failures, our hurts, our struggles. This episode is all about embracing all of your story...not just the parts you like. There's beauty even in your scars and, today, we're going to be talking about how to let your narrative speak. God has written the story of us this way for a reason, and it's time we begin accepting it. It's time we start to live as wounded healers.
