correction to the episode:
While some Tejanos did side with the slaveholding states, others sided with the Union, holding on to the notion that slavery was immoral, or they chose not to support a government who advocated for it, as Mexico had abolished slavery before Texas became independent. What happens, though, is that as white Americans moved westward into Texas, the population who was already there had to make the choice to assimilate in White America or retain their heritage. Those who chose the latter were often denied rights, castigated as "others" and in some instances forced back into Mexico due to threats. The NPS has a decent summary.
