It is recorded as a ministry of Evergreen Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma under the leadership of Philip Jackson, Evergreen's Pastor to Young Adults. It's primary focus is on in-depth Bible study and the principles of marriage taught in the Bible. Most recordings are lessons from the Evergreen "Nearly/Newly-wed" Sunday School Class.
False teachers have been a threat to God’s people since the beginning. Their influence will only end when Christ comes back to receive His bride. In this section, John gives some practical signs to recognize those who try to undermine the gospel and lead believers astray. The key for the people of God to spot them is to listen to what they say and see how they are connected to other believers.

Most people will slowly save money throughout their careers for the day when they can’t work anymore. Retirement is relatively new in human history but it has become a staple in the West. Workers will make financial sacrifices today to save and hopefully secure investment income later in life. Similarly, God’s word teaches us that the worldly sacrifices we make today will produce an eternal reward later.

The term "Christian" was first use to describe the followers of Jesus in Acts 11. The term initially meant "little Christs." The Bible says that as believers progress in their faith, they will naturally start emulating God's character (fruits of the Spirit in Galatians 5). In this lesson, Pastor Philip Jackson continues his series on living out practical theology in everyday life. When a person first comes to faith, learning about God seems daunting. Challenges arise as we compare our knowledge of scripture with others and measure our “success” by how well we answer difficult questions. Often, this leads to insecurities that can ultimately drive us away from the very things God meant to heal us. In this lesson, we will explore what the apostle John saw as the foundation of Godly life and how it contrasts with the lives of the lost.

As the debates around Jesus continued, the political climate in Rome became more complicated when it fell to the Goths in 410. For the first time in 800 years, the “eternal city” was sacked. In response, the church had to bring order and the fractures between Rome and Constantinople began to grow. The first major sign of division happened about 100 years after Constantine embraced the faith (Council of Ephesus, 431). This council would debate the role of Mary and the humanity of Christ but would lose its credibility under the shadow of political intrigues.
After the condemnation of Arius at Nicaea in 325 the church continued to debate about who Jesus was. If Nicaea (325) decided “how it happened,” Constantinople (381) debated “what happened.” The big question to be answered regarded the work of the Holy Spirit in the incarnation of Christ. But, as Christianity became more popular in the empire political pressure began to grow on the church. The stakes were changing for how these questions would be answered as the weight of their answers would shape the rest of history.

The importance of the deity of Jesus cannot be overstated. As believers spread the gospel around the world, many followed Paul’s example by using cultural similarities to convince people of the truth. They leaned on Greek culture and the worldview of some of the great philosophers who taught that a supreme being ruled the world. While this was an effective evangelistic tool at first, eventually some theologians began to drift away from orthodox teaching. This led to a great debate about who Jesus was and what the church believed.

When God finished creation, He said that it was, “very good” (Gen. 1:31). Since then, His enemies have tried to poison our view of the created world and undermine it. Healthy believers have learned to see these tactics for what they are, an attack on God’s redemptive work in the world. Even now, God is working in the lives of His people to show them how to live out their salvation. But as His redemption unfolds, His children must see the tactics of the enemy and combat it with the truth of His word.

Jesus teaches that a Christian, like a tree, is recognized by its fruit. Paul provides a clear explanation of the differences between fruits of the Spirit and fruits of the Flesh. Our diligent work is required, not for our salvation, but for the cultivation for the Spirit to work in our lives. We have to ensure that we are planting good seeds for good fruit. Otherwise, we are letting the world sow; there is no good sowing from the world.
There end of the earth has been written about extensively, but very few authors acknowledge that they don’t really know how events will unfold. But for believers, God has given us instructions that help us navigate the difficulty of living in a broken world. As the world gets more chaotic, the people of God will be put on display to illustrate the greatness of their King and the security of His kingdom.
Our culture is built on fierce individualism. But God’s strategy stands in stark contrast to the American dream. As progress through life, it becomes more evident that we can’t do it on our own. How do we make time for all the things that are supposed to matter? What if our church life and our work life were not meant to be separate? What if that was God’s plan all along?

The Doctrine of Salvation is central to the Christian faith. After our rebellion against God, He could have easily destroyed us and started over. But this doctrine teaches us that’s the opposite of His character. Instead, He gave us a choice to be with Him and then went out of His way to save us after we chose to rebel.Find class notes here.
In a world that says anyone can be anything they feel like being, it is easy to forget that humanity was made intentionally and purposefully in Creation. Mankind has been searching for God since the beginning of time. The Doctrine of God is essentially an organized collection of man’s observations about Him in Scripture. God’s word is the foundation of our belief because without it we wouldn’t know anything about Him. Establishing a doctrine of Scripture is the first important step for faith. For any other discussions to happen about faith or theology, the question of the credibility of Scripture must be answered. As Jesus finished his ministry, He gave His disciples three last assignments. This event would later come to be known as the Great Commission. It was an important moment for God’s people because Jesus delegated His authority to them so that they would spread the good news of the gospel and teach others to follow Him. In our generation, people tend to think of evangelism as more like sales than discipleship. The gospel is presented as a sort of “limited-time offer” that needs to be accepted immediately. But Jesus doesn’t take that approach. He tells the growing crowd following Him that to be His disciple was a death sentence and they should be absolutely sure if they want to follow Him. In this lesson, Pastor Philip Jackson teaches about counting the cost for our families to be disciples of Christ.
In the context of the suffering that we endure as children of God, we have a means to focus ourselves on what will bring healing. God does not simply relegate us to wait out our suffering alone. He has given us a community and a purpose to help us endure. The frustrating realities of dealing with personal conflict and the wages of sin wear on us. In this section, James offers us some encouragement by pointing us again toward endurance as we frame our perspective with eternity. He calls us to look at everything through the lens of eternity by seeing things in full seasons rather than being lost in the frustrations of daily work. As with anything, our lives come down to perspective. When we consider the end result, the process is more bearable. Especially the parts that are painful and overwhelming.

The presence of the Holy Spirit may seem small at times, but Yodh (vv73-80) shows us how the constant companion we have in the Lord is what gives us humility, hope, and makes us a living testimony of the love of Christ to the world around us. As Levi Mattes concludes his series on Psalm 119, he shows how the plan was Jesus all along and how the scarlet thread of redemption is still vibrant today.
There is a natural conflict between the temporary world and the eternal world. James circles back to the theme of chapter 1 by speaking to those who have put their focus completely on the physical world and neglected the eternal. At the conclusion of chapter 4 he warns about those who set their minds on a plan without submitting to God. These same people are the ones who build their lives only looking out for themselves.

The best cure for those who think too highly of themselves is to remind them of their own limitations. James began this section of his letter by rebuking those who think they have everything figured out. He points out that their sense of entitlement has called down the forces of heaven against them. But the root cause of their difficulty is not their wicked prayers. It is their arrogant and entitled spirit.

The process of repentance can sometimes be a public spectacle. As others make themselves right with God, those who watch are still in danger of condemnation when they forget their own sinfulness. Since the product of sinful prayers is conflict, the natural result of conviction is the temptation to tear another person down in order to make ourselves seem more godly. The danger for any believer who compares themselves to others is to create a judgmental and contemptuous heart.

The promise of grace is our introduction to salvation. But the longer we live it becomes increasingly hard to remember where we have come from. How do we respond to the revelation that if we live according to the flesh we declare war on our creator? How do we cultivate a personal and family culture that is continually aware of God’s grace? James offers five practical steps in our reconciliation with God: 1) submission, 2) resistance, 3) drawing near, 4) repentance, and 5) exaltation.
There are few things more insidious than a traitor who fights against their own nation to try to destroy it. God’s word teaches us that after we are saved we move from slaves of the darkness to coheirs with Christ. As we begin to serve Him, He uses us to shine His light into our dark world in order to redeem it. But the continued struggle with our sin can continue to draw us back to our old allegiances leading to conflict. In this lesson we will explore the source of those divisions and where they come from.
Every person makes decisions about their life. But their ability to make the best choice will be determined not by where they get their information, but how they process it. A godly person will receive their wisdom from God. An ungodly person will rely on their own wisdom. In this section, James teaches us how to evaluate where we are getting our wisdom and how to identify healthy leadership.
The consequences of destructive talk are profound. In some cases, studies show that verbal abuse can lead to extreme and chronic social, mental, and even physical ailments. Scripture tells us that our words are a reflection of our internal condition. But the hope of the gospel is that the Holy Spirit intervenes in the lives of His children to supernaturally redeem their speech. It is only through submitting to godly wisdom that a sinful person can speak with the healing voice of God.
One of the greatest challenges in the 21st century is that belief is the only requirement for salvation. This has led an entire generation to fall into the trap of falsely thinking that they are saved simply because they acknowledged God at one point in their lives. But God’s word tells us that the spiritually alive will be people of action. Simply put, if there is no action, there is no life.
The Family of God is meant to be a collection of people from all walks of life. One of the sinful struggles of living in a community of people that you love is the temptation to be exclusive. As God brings new people into a church, one of Satan’s strategies is to keep them on the fringes. But James teaches us that God takes favoritism just as seriously as any other sin. If we want to be like Christ, we must receive others just like Him.

Infertility can be a the cause of deep hurt and anger. God's word teaches us that these kinds of frustrations are meant to bring us before the throne of God. The story of Hannah and Elkanah is a testimony of a faith man and his wife who bring their anger to God. In the process, Hannah's deep lamentation is transformed through heartfelt prayer into resolve and faithfulness.
