In this sermon, Pastor Scott Worthington preached from Acts 7:54–60, the story of Stephen’s martyrdom.

There is a version of Christianity being sold that says following Jesus means everything will go well for you. But the truth is this: Follow Jesus, and you get Jesus, come what may.

Stephen was a faithful follower of Jesus who was martyred for speaking the truth of God’s Word. His story reminds us that we too will face hardship as we follow Jesus. But in whatever we’re facing, we can take comfort in knowing that we are not alone. God is with us.

In this sermon, Pastor Scott preached from Acts 5:27-42.

As the disciples continued proclaiming the good news, they faced increasing persecution. Yet rather than obeying the demands of others to stop, they chose to obey God and remained faithful to their mission. In the same way, followers of Jesus today may face opposition when sharing their faith in places where Christ is resisted. The question we must wrestle with is this: What will we do when speaking about Jesus comes at a cost?

As the apostles faced opposition, imprisonment, and pressure to stop preaching the Gospel, God miraculously opened the prison doors and sent them right back to continue the mission. In this sermon, Pastor Tom McCormick preached from Acts 5:12–16.

In this passage, we see God moving powerfully through the early. Miracles were taking place, unity was evident, the church was highly respected by the culture, more people than ever were being saved, and many were being healed. Together, we reflect on whether God is moving with that same power in Hope Church today, and whether we truly desire to be a church like the early church.

Could it be that the reason we do not see more of God’s power is not because His power has changed, but because we cause Him to withhold it? And what would cause God not to withhold His power? That is the question we explore in this sermon.

We wrestled with one of the hardest passages in the book of Acts as we looked at the story of Ananias and Sapphira. From this passage, we learned that the greatest hindrance to the advancement of the gospel is not sin outside the church, but sin inside the church.

As followers of Jesus, do we understand the seriousness of our sin? Do we have a holy fear of God, knowing that He is not only loving, but also holy? Barabbas was a wicked, guilty, and condemned man—yet the crowd chose to set him free and crucify Jesus, the innocent and righteous one, in his place. As followers of Jesus, we must recognize that Barabbas is a reflection of us. We were the guilty ones, and Jesus, the righteous one, became our substitute. That’s the good news of the gospel.
