In this week's episode, I chat with Fiona Tande, a wildlife filmmaker whose journey started in conservation. We will discuss the world of wildlife filmmaking on the African continent as well as the upcoming Pridelands Wildlife Film Festival.
Fiona is the director at Pridelands Wildlife Film Fest - Africa's first wildlife film festival now in its 2nd edition taking place between 26th and 29th July 2023.

This week’s episode is rather an unusual one. It was recorded at 4100 meters Above Sea Level, around the warmth of a campfire on a rainy and very chilly night in the mountains.
In this episode, we take a deep dive into the lives, traditions, and history of the Gishu and Sabinyi people.
I am joined by Alex one of the guides from Mountain Elgon National Park, a true son of the land narrates this mysterious story with its many contrasts.
We will explore the uniqueness of this mountain which protects the world’s largest high caldera and still protects the world’s largest caldera base.
We will certainly talk about the ancient ritual of circumcision as well as the more controversial subject of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
Our journey of discovery will also lead us to the story of Kintu who many know to be the first Muganda; but very few know to have been one of the sons of Masaaba, the most sacred ancestor of the Bagisu people.
As the rain drops beat against our small iron sheet shelter and the sparks from the campfire fill the air, we will also learn about the linkage between the Sabinyi people of Mount. Elgon and their Jewish brothers from Biblical Jericho.

Juma joins me from the slopes of Mount Elgon; a region that he knows as well as the back of his hand.
He was born and bred in the east and is certainly the perfect ambassador for tourism in this stunning part of the country.
We will also explore some of the bucketlist activities in Eastern Uganda and also shine the light on a new wave of tourism development and promotion that is now driven by youthful lads who are using photography and modern technology to change the narrative and put the region in its well-deserved place.

Is Trophy Hunting Conservation?
This week we have a respectful conversation with Jens Ulrik Høgh, an expert pro-hunter and outspoken defender of the hunting community, and Dr. Matthew Schurch, the Africa Wildlife Specialist at the world-renowned Humane Society International (HSI).
Jens Ulrik Høgh is a seasoned hunting advocate and a hunter himself with experience in leading and participating in hunting trips. He's been involved in publishing hunting magazines since 1992 as both publisher, editor, and freelance writer/photographer specializing in guns and equipment, historical articles, and hunting reports. For the last few years, Jens has focused specifically on communicating the position of hunting to non-hunters through mass media in Denmark as well as internationally. He joins the podcast on behalf of the hunting community to help us understand how and why they do what they do.
The Humane Society International (HSI) is an organization that stands up for animal protection in countries across Africa and in other parts of the world. HSI runs active campaigns to improve conditions for farmed animals as well as our own wildlife that roams the African plains. They address issues such as what they call inhumane practices and conditions revolving around animal welfare, illegal wildlife trade, threats to endangered species, the slaughter of marine mammals, the use of animals in research and testing, the suffering of animals for the fur trade, and more.

On this day 69 years ago, the fateful plane crash that involved American journo and novelist, Ernest Hemingway and his wife, Mary Welsh Hemingway in Murchison Falls National Park made headlines around the world.
But the story was even crazier
Hemingway, a tall, powerfully built man often wore a mustache and was a man of action as well as a writer of action stories. He’d covered both the Spanish Civil War and both the First World War and Second World War as a correspondent. He was well-celebrated across the globe.
That fateful day of January 25, 1954, the chartered plane carrying the novelist and his wife on a sightseeing trip cracked up in the wilds near the Murchison Waterfalls a couple of moments after failing to land in Masindi for routine refueling.
The area where they crashed was one of the most inaccessible spots in Uganda dominated by crocodiles, elephants, buffaloes, lions, and other big game but also one of the most beautiful.
The news made headlines across the globe, as the famous scribe and his wife were feared dead. Obviously, no one imagined they’d have escaped the crash and if they had; the wilderness wouldn’t have spared them.
Long story short, the duo were fortunately found and rescued by a launch-trip taking tourists to the falls. They would, later on, be transferred to Butiaba, on the shores of present-day Lake Albert, where they boarded an evacuation plane destined for Nairobi, Kenya.
Shortly after take-off, that plane caught fire and plunged to the ground as well. Quite shockingly, everyone on board escaped alive but it’s reported that Ernest sustained brain and spinal injuries that he would live with for the rest of his life.
A police rescue party then transferred the Hemingways to Masindi Hotel, which if you didn’t know, is Uganda’s oldest hotel. And to this day, you are able to visit the room he stayed in, lightly conserved but more like it looked several years ago.
As a result of Hemingway’s life-cheating story, several foreign tourists flocked to Uganda’s Murchison Falls National Park. And you might just say… that’s still the case.
Well although he’d proved immortal, Ernest Hemingway was found dead of a shotgun wound in the head at his home 7 years after the double-crash. His wife, Mary, said that he had killed himself accidentally while cleaning the weapon.
What a life!

This month the World Wildlife Fund revealed in their latest Living Planet Report 2022 that over 69% of global biodiversity has been on a continuous decline since 1970 with the biggest reductions being seen to happen in what we know to be the world’s most biodiverse continents.
The report shows a 94% Biodiversity loss in South America, 66% reduction in Africa; and 55% reduction in Asia- Pacific.
As we continue to vividly see and feel the adverse effects of climate change and biodiversity loss, this week global leaders will gather again in Egypt for COP27, The 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference.
Now, in a world where conservation communications sound more like doomsday prophecies than they do about the positive strides made; how do we mobilize more funds, how can we create more awareness, and basically, step up support for the wilder things on earth that need our voices the most?
How can we raise more funds for conservation and how do we ensure that these funds are spent for the right reasons to help support conservation efforts especially locally?

Welcome to the Jonathan Benaiah podcast where we talk about the earth, images, words, wildlife films and photography, and occasionally, music.
Today’s topic, as you already see... We will be talking about what you would need to set up a travel podcast, and this is me talking about what I’ve got set up over here. And this is critically pieced together to cater for the times that I am not in the office and on the road somewhere in a cottage at a safari lodge or basically out of town where I do not have the luxury of a workstation.
On Saturday 3rd September 2022, we, a team of tourism content creators, will venture out on a motorised traditional canoe into the papyrus maze that forms the famed Mabamba Swamp, hoping to see the Shoebill and many more feathery treasures as they lightly skip over the lily pads or hang on weightless leaves in this Important Bird Area (IBA). Be sure to tune in right on time as we lose sight of shore and venture deep into this Ramsar Site to test some of our newest audiovisual equipment, and just have fun. We will “try” to broadcast a combination of on-boat as well as aerial images to bring a close-to-intimate experience exclusively for your eyes and ears. Ask those burning questions and have them answered in real-time by one of Uganda’s expert bird guides, tune in and participate in the real search RAW, WILD and REAL. Experience the battles to overcome unreliable internet reception, and brave the sun with us all through the comfort of your phone, tablet, or computer. And if all goes well... we can all celebrate an amazing wildlife encounter.
