We speak with Dr. Gohar Sheikh, Director of Elign Health Centre in Burnaby & Founder of House Call for Humanity, on his work in addressing the complex relationship between pain, poverty, mental health and addictions.

According to research published by the Mayo Clinic, chronic pain and mental health disorders are not only common in the general population, but studies suggest that a relationship exists between these 2 conditions. In addition to depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders, individuals with chronic pain are at risk of other mental health problems including suicide.

In 2020 there has been over 1,300 deaths linked to drug overdoses in British Columbia. Many of those who turn to illegal drugs initially do so to manage pain. As part of the Muslim Care Centres multidisciplinary approach to addiction recovery and mental wellbeing we have facilitated Chiropractic care, in partnership with House Call for Humanity, to vulnerable individuals on Vancouver’s Downtown East Side.
