We all know that communication is a powerful tool that can either build or break relationships. Our words possess this amazing ability to inspire, motivate, and uplift others. But, here's the catch: they can also have unintended consequences that leave a lasting impact. When we make seemingly harmless statements based on our own experiences or abilities, we might inadvertently shape the thoughts and beliefs of those listening. It's like having a superpower that we need to wield with caution.
I share my strategies to ensure that your conversations have a positive effect:

I’m a people pleaser. Fact. I’m getting better now - or at least I’m more in control of it simply because I’ve experienced the destructive consequences it brings.
I often tell this story to help others going through similar experiences because by sharing your unique story, you can connect with others and provide them with valuable insights based on your own experiences. In turn, they will support your vision, cheer you on, and remind you to be true to yourself.
Have a think today about the following questions and explore whether now is the time to start re-writing the story you really want to tell.

When we were children, before countless individuals dampened our creativity, crushed our dreams, and made us feel the need to conform for acceptance we possessed vivid imaginations and the ability to think beyond the obvious. We had the innate power to connect with others simply by sharing what was on our minds, unfiltered and uncensored, wearing our emotions on our sleeves. But all to often now, as adults, we are bound by the "should haves" and "aught to’s.”.
In this episode I question what would happen if we adopted the mindset of a child when it came to allowing ideas to flow freely, embracing our emotions and quite frankly, just having a bit of fun with out stories.

When we embrace our own struggles and share how we’ve triumphed over them, we can inspire others and give them hope - surely that’s worth any comfortable feelings or fears you might have?
Take a moment to consider how you could delve into your own personal stories as a means of offering guidance and hope to others.
Being vulnerable and open about your insecurities can foster a profound sense of connection and motivate others to embrace their own vulnerabilities and find strength.
Celebrating successes and milestones demonstrates that progress is possible, reassuring others and encouraging them to preserve and celebrate their own wins.
Share resources, strategies and experiences to provide hope for those seeking supporting or looking for a way forward.
By living your truth and being unapologetically you, you become an authentic role model for others. Your courage, resilience, and determination inspire others to embrace their own stories, dreams, and aspirations, instilling in their ability to create positive change and fostering hope for a brighter future.

I’m seeing a growing trend among small independent brands, even those who set up initially with profit in mind, to embrace a more community-oriented and environmentally conscious sense of purpose.
It’s a powerful acknowledgement that we all have a role to play in shaping the world around us, for better or worse. But how do you tell your story, when you’re more about the collective benefit of what you do, rather than the individual. And how can you use that story to attract and unite people being your cause?

Whenever I get creative block I find myself annoyingly singing Natasha Bedingfield lyrics. Which as you can imagine, doesn’t help at all. But if you were a teenager of the 90s, you’ll probably recognise it… Tryna find the magic. Tryna write a classic. Don’t you know/ Wastebin full of paper. Clear rhymes see ya later! Oh and the best line of all - nothing I write is ever good enough.
Truth is, even the most imaginative minds sometimes experience creative block when it comes to telling their own business stories. Don't fret! Today I’m going to share some effective ways to overcome creative block and unlock your storytelling potential.

As small business owners, we often have to make tough decisions, like putting up our prices to ensure we’re paid our worth against a back drop of a cost of living crisis.
But here's the thing: by incorporating storytelling techniques, we can not only communicate the reasons behind the price increase but also help our customers see the value and benefits they will receive.

Imagine you're a baker who has perfected a new gluten-free bread recipe. How do you talk about your product?
Do you say, "Most bread on the market is filled with unhealthy preservatives and processed ingredients. They're terrible for your health! But MY bread is gluten-free. Or do you say? "Imagine biting into a slice of warm, freshly baked bread that's not only incredibly delicious but also gluten-free.
In this epidote I explore how to talk about the benefits of what you sell without coming across as pushy or negative.

Did you know that some of the most powerful stories you can share for your business are the ones that come out of your customer’s mouths? But they are not always free flowing. It’s time to dig a little deeper beyond the surface and engage in some more meaningful conversations with your customers. Here are some ways to help you do just that.
Truly listen to your customers. Practice active listening by giving them your full attention, maintaining eye contact, and showing genuine interest in their experiences. Encourage them to share their stories and allow them the space to express themselves fully. By actively listening, you create a safe and open environment where customers feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and emotion - empathy, good for trust and relate tips
Instead of asking simple yes-or-no questions, ask open-ended questions that encourage customers to elaborate and share more details. For example, ask questions like "Can you tell me more about that?" or "How did that experience make you feel?" This prompts customers to dive deeper into their experiences and provides you with richer, more insightful stories.
If 1:1 interviews are not your thang, consider surveys instead - Survey Monkey is a great tool for this. Design questions that explore their motivations, challenges, and the impact your product or service has had on their lives. This allows customers to reflect on their experiences and provide thoughtful responses that can form the basis of powerful stories. Understand why the challenge matters to them; ask for their drivers, what they’re trying to achieve personally, what will happen if they don’t get it. And use this info - create different personas and target your stories to them.

Did you know that Joan Collins, famed actress, 80”s glamour puss and AUTHOR who penned an entire autobiography without actually writing? And what did she do instead? She dictated it all onto a recorder.
So, if writing really isn’t your thing, why not record what you want to say into your phone and transcribe from there? There are even apps that can do that for you. Or why not go bold and ditch the words altogether. There are lots of great illustrators out there who can take your ideas and turn them into pictures. One of my favourite’s is a lady called Sam Warburton.

Virtue signalling - superficial displays of virtue and value, does absolutely nothing when it comes to maintaining authenticity and building trust with your audience. I would go as far to say, it can actually be pretty damaging to your brand too. But it’s not always easy to know when you’re doing it, especially if there something happening in the world that everyone seems to be commenting on (think Black Lives Matter, International Women’s Day, Pride month etc)
In order to make sure you don’t fall into the tap, I share some tips to help you think about your messaging and stay authentic to what you believe in.

When it comes to business storytelling being specific is your new best friend. But how do you go about getting specific?
Step 1 - Define your ideal client/s so you can personalise your message specifically to their needs, wants and desires. Make them the main character of your stories - rather than you or your products or services.
Step 2 - Think about that ideal client every time you pick up the pen or open your laptop to write. Make sure every business story you tell is about them, the needs they have and how their life is made better as a result of their decision to buy from you.

For many small business owners, selling doesn't come naturally. Yet it's one of the many different hats we have to wear if we want to grow and be a success, whatever that means to you. I definitely learned this lesson the hard way. And now I would like to help you avoid making the same mistake as me!

I share 5 tips for using storytelling to engage and grow your audience.
Tip 1 - Find your story; identify your key message and purpose.
Think about what your audience care most about (not just what you think is interesting). Look at what problems they’re looking to solve. And use this to create an engaging and compelling story that resonates with them.
Tip 2 - Spend the time to figure out your hook - you’ve only got a couple of seconds to make an impact.
Drama and emotion are good for this. Why not share a time something went epically wrong to create intrigue and a desire to listen on?
Tip 3 - Use anecdotes and examples to bring your story to life.
Avoid listing facts and figures and use real-life examples to show your audience what you mean and how this can help them. That’s not to say don’t include data in your content if it’s relevant (cleverly placed data can boost credibility) but tell it in a story that will pique the interest of your average client.
Tip 4 - Collaborate with other storytellers
Work with other content creators, storytellers and small business owners to reach new audiences and connect with like-minded people who share similar stories and experiences.
Tip 5 - Be yourself.
Sharing stories is a chance to let your audience get to know the real you. Talk how you usually talk. Be genuine, honest, and authentic. A little bit of humor doesn’t go a miss (audience-appropriate, of course!)

Do you know what the first story ever told was about? No, me neither. But I can hazard a guess that it probably had something to do with survival. And that’s the thing. Most stories today, one way or another are about exactly the same; helping us make sense of the world around and what we need to do to survive, physically, mentally, financially, spiritually. But, why exactly is that? Why are stories just so damn important to our everyday decision making?

How do we make sure our message doesn't get lost in translation?
Everyone consumers information differently. Some people want all the details. Others just want to know where, what and why. So where does that leave us as storytellers? Keep copy brief and we may alienate those who really want to get their teeth into what we do. But go in on all the details and you could risk losing the attention of a lot of people.
In this episode I explore 3 tips for finding the balance:
Keep it relevant. Know your audience and what matters to them will help ensure your content is interesting to them
Invest time in writing a good headline to grab attention AND give those with a short attention span the information they need upfront.
Telling a story makes your content relatable, relevant and memorable. But make sure you don't leave too many gaps that are open to interpretation.

I work on a lot of brand stories for small and independent brands. You would be surprised how many business owners realise, when prodded a little by me, that their ideal customer is actually themselves. Perfect - you’ve got the ideal insight into what your customers are struggling with, how they see the world etc, because it’s you (word of warning - do test your views once in a while, they may be similar but assumption is never a good thing)
But what happens when you’re selling to an audience unlike yourself?
Even if we can’t truthfully identify with our audience, maybe you sell predominately to a different gender, different ages or people who come from a very different culture to you, we can take the time to understand them by inviting them to share their stories and more importantly, by listening to them.
Because you never know where you will find the connections, things in common, similar world views, value or ethics. And once you do, these are the areas you can use to build stronger, more trusted relationships based on shared experiences, fears, hopes and dreams.

Ok, for many of you this might be the thing of nightmares (it is for me!) but imagine for a moment that you’re stood up in front of the Dragon’s trying to persuade Deborah, Steven or Peter to invest in your business idea. All eyes are on you, beads of sweat drip down your face and you just know you’re blushing. What do you do? Baffle them with loads of numbers in the hope it’ll make you sound clever. Or do you tell them a story and win over their hearts and minds?
In this episode we explore how to use emotion when pitching your ideas and the different stories
you could you tell to fire up the heart winning chemicals in your ideal client’s brain.

If every story you tell, about your experiences, the experiences of your customers, the things you care most about is positive and all you ever do is paint a rosy picture, before long people will stop believing you. Why? Because we know that’s not the reality. And it’s fine. We can take it.
We know that not everything is perfect because we experience this in our own lives every day. So stop kidding us that there is some state of nirvana just waiting out there for us if only we did the thing or bought the widget. We want to buy from real people telling real stories that fit with the way we see the world.
In this episode I invite you to think about your own vulnerability and how sharing a little bit of it may just be the thing you need to build solid, trusted relationships with your customers.

Recently I was invited to be a guest on another podcast. I thought it was a joke at first. Maybe the host was drunk. After all, he’d had Simon Sinek (Story of Why) on his show, why on earth would he want little old me?
But he did. And I learnt something pretty major as a result - that being an expert at something isn’t about how big your audience is. How many YouTube hits you’ve got. How many best selling novels with your name on it are in Waterstones. For me, and maybe you, it’s enough to know that being an expert is about making a difference to the one person who, in that moment, needs it the most.

Today, I thought would take a step back and go over a few of the basics to help anyone that’s new to storytelling or looking for inspiration around how you can brand yourself better on - and offline. And for anyone that’s being doing it a while, these are a great reminder and a time to check in.
Number 1 - Get to know your audience.
It sounds obvious but you’d be amazed how many small brands (and quite a few large ones too) miss this. Talking to your audience, exploring what’s going on in their world helps you understand better what they need rather than making assumptions which can often turn out to be wrong, meaning you waste time, money and effort talking about or even selling things your ideal clients don’t need or aren’t interested in.
Number 2 - Invest the time to get your story straight.
Define your vision mission and values - using your insight from above to connect your story to the needs/wants/desires of your different personas. And look for the golden threat that connects them all.
For more guidance on writing your brand story, check out episodes 54-59 for a full blown masterclass you can tackle, as always, one day at a time.
Number 3 - Get visible
Try and show up regularly wherever your audience hang out - both on social media and in real life is possible, like events, networking groups etc. Get creative, for example using video in your newsletter or running a podcast. Share your success stories and invite others to do the same.

Right now there are people trying to dictate our country’s narrative. What can and can’t be said, in the ‘public interest’ whilst the same voices turn a blind eye to corruption happening right in front of them, their inflammatory words fuelling a fire we never thought would burn again in this country. It’s fundamentally wrong. And it sucks.
Today I am dedicating this episode to freedom of speech and our right to speak out when we see something that’s so very very wrong.

We consume over 100,000 words a day. Every which way we look, someone or something is vying for our attention. So how do you cut through all the clutter and get the people you want to listen to what you have to say.?
Here are my top tips for grabbing attention in your content, including emails and social media captionsP
Use emotional content to increase effectiveness. Even adding emojis make a difference with some brands reporting up to 56% increase in email open rates when they’ve used them.
Ask leading questions, posing an intriguing hypothesis or promising something so audacious are all great ways to get people to read on. But, don’t forget to provide the pay off in the first sentence or so or else your audience might not stay hooked.
Create urgency or FOMO (fear of missing out) with time bound offers, last chances and exclusivity. Nobody wants to be the one that doesn’t get picked for the team.
Offer something in return for your audience’s attention. And don’t be afraid to use the word FREE as in get my free storytelling guide (no really, you can, click )
Use stories to connect with your audience and create actions - like opening your email or clicking on a link. Keep it simple but personal, for example Mary created awesome email newsletters using a very clever storyteller’s top tips and here’s how she did it…..

Just because you’re maybe not the world’s greatest writer, doesn’t mean you can’t tell your business stories with prowess.
In fact, you’re probably telling great stories all the time when you speak with customers and chat to your friends and family. But I know that when it comes to stopping to think about your stories and write them down, it can be quite the different experience.
So how do you get over the curse of writers block?

I used to be so fearful of getting emotional when I spoke in meetings that for years, I simply kept quiet. I would hide my true feelings - because that’s what you did in the corporate world right? Well, not any more.
Being emotional doesn’t make me unprofessional. All the evidence of my work, the experience my customers get, the results I deliver for them, that’s enough for others to see how professional I am. Being emotional, well that just shows how much I care. That I have a heart. And that’s what I know my customers want to see.
Today’s episode is time for you to think about how you present yourself and how you can use your emotional side to create relatable, human-focussed content that’s great for developing deep bonds with your audience.

We are not perfect people. I am not a perfect person. We are all works in progress.
Sure you can tell a story that makes you sound like the elixir to all our problems in life (buy my course and make a million pounds in a week just like - sound familiar?) But it isn’t going to do a lot if your customer’s can’t see themselves in it.
In this episode I show you how to write a story that shows your customers you really get what’s going on with them, messy bits and all. And how you can use your experiences to demonstrate empathy not just with what they’re trying to achieve but also why it’s hard for them to get there.
If you’ve enjoyed what you’ve heard, I’d love it if you left a 5 star rating or review. It makes me feel loved and more importantly increases the visibility of my show so more women like you can benefit from it.

There is no wrong or right answer to the question of outsourcing storytelling and copywriting but one thing I am certain of, we are not super heroes. We cannot be good at everything, all of the time. There is no weakness in asking for help. In fact, it can be such a smart business move, it’s quite the opposite.

This year's International Women’s Day is all about embracing equity, wrapping our arms around a collective narrative and taking action to drive change to create an inclusive world for all - where all voices matter.
Yes this fight needs to be more than something we just write about - but our words do matter and hold weight when used correctly.
On this most important day, I share my ideas on how you can use your words to drive action:
Celebrate the achievements of women you care about and who inspire you
Use your voice to share your own experiences and what these have taught you about being part of the solution, not the problem
Tell your story about what IWD and embracing equity means to you and what you're doing in your own sphere of influence
Use your stories to raise awareness of groups or movements you are part of; shared experiences unite people and shine a light onto communities that others might not be aware of
Speak out when you see something you know isn't right. Use your words and call it. And invite others to standard with you. We're all in this together.

Today I'm sharing one of my favourite marketing and storytelling hacks. The 'So What?' Test.
If your customers can quickly understand your value, aligned with the problem they are trying to solve, they are more likely to buy from you. Yet many businesses bury that value underneath a load of marketing fluff designed to make them look clever without ever thinking about the customer.
With this foolproof method, you can put your customer value at the front and centre of every story you tell. So here's the trick. With every statement you make, everything you write, keep asking, "so what does this mean for my customer?"

When does applying a bit of creative license turn into defrauding your audience? And does it matter? Answer: YES.
Adding dramatic details to your stories is all part of painting a more engaging picture for your audience. As is creating an imaginary scenario to help your customers see what working with you or using your product could look and feel like for them, providing it's clear it's fictional.
But fabricating and presenting it as real is a different matter and puts your relationships with your audience at high risk.
I'm all for spinning a little yarn to make an already memorable story stick in your audience's head but making something up entirely. It's just not worth it.

Don't be afraid of your voice. It is one of your greatest gifts, so don't squander it pretending to be someone you are not. If people don't like what they hear – go and seek out those that do – they are your people.
For some of you, speaking with clarity and confidence in your voice may come naturally (and massive high fives if it does), but I know from experience that it's not always easy. So where do you start when it comes to developing your voice?
Begin by asking yourself why you do what you do. Every business has a story, and by turning the context of what your company stands for into marketing messaging - you can connect more closely with your customers by engaging with their own emotional needs, wants and world views.

Unless you've been hiding under a rock recently, you'll have heard about the rise of AI content creators. ChatGPT, Jasper, and even Canva are getting in on the act.
I can see its appeal - we're all strapped for time and money but the big question for me is - can you use AI to create stories?
Yes, of course. But don't expect them to do anything for you.
Storytelling is exclusively human. It's not an algorithm or database. It's woven into our DNA and into our brains' chemical makeup. It's the very essence of what makes us human. And it's about emotion. Shared experiences. Empathy. Love. Fear. Greed. Envy. Hope and Joy.
ChatBots can’t replicate that.

If you meet someone for the first time and you tell them a story, they’re 22x more likely to remember you the next time. So why do we (me included) feel it necessary to recount our whole CV, all the way back to our weekend paper round when we’re asked to introduce ourselves?
Here are three tips to help you build storytelling into how you describe yourself and your business so that no-one forgets who you are and what you can do for them.
Tip 1 - Talk directly to your audience and the problems they face, whether that’s face to face or through content. Make them the hero of your story (not you, your business or what you sell) and show them exactly how you’re going to help them and what this will mean for them.
Tip 2 - Stories follow an arc of crisis, struggle and resolution. Share a mini-crisis of your own, how you overcame it and what you learned to create impactful drama. Don’t forget to tell your audience what this experiences means to how you help them now.
Tip 3 - Impact a bit of personality and fun into your content. If you’re in person, be expressive in your body language, get up and walk round the room or share pictures as you’ll telling your story. Or create characters to tell your story for you - great if you’re selling products as you can give them their own unforgettable voice.

Business owners who don't tell their story are 92% more likely to fail in the first 2 years of trading.
Before you start panicking, that stat is entirely made up but I bet it made you look?! Fear is a potent emotion and, as such, should be used wisely when telling your stories.
Trying frighten your audience into doing something send an unmistakable message about who you are and what your brand stands for. I'm guessing that most of you, if not all of you, don't want to be seen like that.

I blew a massive promotion opportunity by using ‘we’ instead of ‘I’ at the interview because I felt I wasn’t good enough to claim my successes Ias my own. At just 23 I had experienced my first professional bout of imposter syndrome. And it didn’t feel good.
Two decades later, I see small business owners, especially female ones, making the same mistake. And I get it. You want to be taken seriously. You want others to think you’re running a “proper” businesses. Can you really do this all by yourself? YES YOU CAN!
I share why saying ‘I’ when your brand is just you is an empowering and powerful action which also helps you build connection and trust with your audience.

One of the questions I get asked most frequently is am I allowed to tell my story?
Ok, so obviously, there are no laws in place around who can tell their story. Yet, there does seem to be something unwritten which dictates, in your mind, whether or not you can tell your story.
Today I delve into the barriers we all create for ourselves when it comes to sharing our personal story.

The most effective stories are those that your customers can see themselves in. Like a mirror being held up. Yes, you might be sharing your experiences, your learnings, your fears but, and here’s the key to great storytelling, you want your customers to feel actually, its all about them.
It’s really the difference between why some stories convert to sales and others, well, don’t.
Today I share an exercise in making sure your story tells your customers’ story too.
Grab a pen and draw three columns. In the first write down a list of the challenges/problems that led you to do what you do now. In the second column write down what you did to overcome each of them. And finally in the third, write down how that experience helps you lead your customers through similar challenges.
For every challenge, solution and experience, there’s a powerful story right there waiting to be told.

We all have stories that are so ingrained in our minds we believe them to be true. Sometimes, even though we understand logically they’re probably made up, we continue to believe them as they’re a source of comfort or joy.
But what about the stories that aren’t helpful? The stories that are actually an uncomfortable source of negative emotions. Surely if we can embellish stories because they make us feel good, then we can take away the things that exist to do the exact opposite.
In this episode I explore how to re-think your negative stories for a more positive outcome.

This episode is the final part of my special Brand Story Masterclass dedicated to getting your brand story written once and for all and giving you the confidence and know-how to get out there and tell it.
If you get your brand story straight, you'll have a whole heap of content ready to go. It's perfect for your website - a refreshing change to an About Me page. Check out Lucy and Yak for a great - and highly creative - example.
Your values also hold exciting content to show others what the experience of working with you or buying your products would look and feel like them. Bring this to live on your website or social media. Oatly is bloomin' brilliant at this.
But beyond just your website or social media bio, where else can you use your story?
If you'd like more ideas, grab a copy of my workbook - How to tell Business Stories, which includes ten story templates you can customise and make your own.

Ok, this is simple. We, as people, look to work with others or buy from brands that share the same values. If you don't talk about your values, how will we ever know what you stand for? It sounds like a lost opportunity to me…
As a brand, your values are the principles that guide you in everything you do. And, if you have people working for you or plan to bring them on board in the future, they also suggest what you expect from others.
Here are my top tips for thinking about your values.

What’s your favourite movie? Mine’s Shawshank Redemption - not least for it’s wonderful storytelling but also what it teaches us about change. A little lesson I’m going to share in this episode.
Fear of change is often based on stories that stop us from achieving our potential or stop us from seeing when we’ve made massive, positive leaps forward. Stories that are so real and vivid we never think to question them and that society just loves to (unhelpfully) reinforce.
Figuring out your story can re-focus your mindset around change, creating a healthier relationship that is built around being excited about all the possibilities ahead of your, rather than giving into the fear.

I’m all for demystifying storytelling. Changing the narrative, if you excuse the pun, and making learning to tell your story much more accessible and a lot less daunting. It’s one of the reasons why I started this podcast and what motivates me to keep going. So strap yourself in, as I tackle one of the biggest misconceptions about storytelling.
1. Storytelling can only be used when being really creative or “fun”. It’s not for corporate marketing or serious issues.
Wrong. Storytelling is a way to get your message not only heard but embedded in the hearts and minds of your audience. Charities such a Mind and Crisis are great examples of organisations that have really mastered this.
2. A story has to start with ‘once upon a time’ and end with ‘and then they lived happily ever after.’
Not all stories are fairy tales. Stories are a great way to start serious conversations and can humanise subjects that are other wise hard to talk about. Check out Humans of New York or Humans of Covid 19 for incredible examples of this.
3. Storytelling can only be used for nice ‘lifestyle-type’ products.
Codswallop. Just take a look at the Maersk instagram account if you want to see a real-life example of this; compelling storytelling about shipping containers, who’d have thunk it?

Honesty. Integrity. Transparency. Fun. Ethical. Sustainable
All very worthy values but yawn, boring as dishwater. And, when something is boring, or says just the same as everyone else, your audience are just gonna sail right on past.
So how do you get them to stop, take note and say Yes! This is a brand I want to work with?
Here’s 3 tips you can start working on straight away
Tip 1 - Make sure your values are yours - not anyone else. Oh and be prepared to defend each value with evidence.
Tip 2 - Be specific - vagueness helps no-one.
Tip 3 - Ditch the boring language and have fun with it.
If you’d like to learn a bit more about why your values matter so much, check out my previous episode - How talking about your values could bag you a whole new audience.

Research shows 52% of consumers are more attracted to buy from certain brand
over others if these brands stand for something bigger than just the products or services
they sell, which align to their personal values.
So what does this all mean for you?
Whether or not you’re running a business, you are wanting people at the very least to buy
into you. And buying into someone is a lot harder if you don’t know what you’re buying into.
Understanding what you stand for gives your audience a choice. It also means you don’t need to waste your time trying to reach people who don’t share your values.
And being clear on your purpose, gives others something to connect to; a shared experience, a joint feeling which helps build stronger, more loyal relationships.
Continue the learning. Check out my next episode for tips on how you can talk about your values so they are more ‘Yes’ than ‘Yawn’.

In this episode I invite you to take a little step back as we explore the role your story can play when it comes to you getting what you want out of your life, business, career and relationships.

How do you get others to listen to you and engage with what you have to say? Simple, you just have to show up. It’s easy right. Sure. Until you actually have to do it.
It’s all very well and good saying you just need to show up consistently to build a brand. But what if that brand’s just you. And what if you haven’t ‘just shown up’ before?
In this episode I share a simple framework to help you feel more at ease with showing up and taking about what you do and why.

When you tell a story for everyone, you tell a story for no-one. All that effort and hard work you’ve put into your story, that ‘oh my god, shall I share it, what if people hate it, annoying chatter, it all goes to waste if you haven’t thought about your audience.
Here are 4 steps to help you figure out who your stories are for:
Step 1 - Write down who you don’t want to work with. If you’re in any way blocked with how you are for, being clear on who you’re not for, will really help.
Step 2 - Think about who you can deliver greatest value to, who you enjoy working with and who need what do you most.
Step 3 - What do they look like? What makes them ideal, what must they have e.g something very basic like budget to buy from you or it could be a unique problem, a stage in their life or burning desire to do something.
Step 4 - What behaviour do they exhibit that will help you identify them - do they spend lots of time on Instagram, attend certain events, turn to podcasts for self help
In my next episode, All The Stories You Can tell, I’ll explore the six questions you should be asking your audience as a simple way to create stories that not only mean something to them but also get them to act in the way you want.

It’s all in the mind. If you think about storytelling as the icing on your cake, it will feel less of an uphill struggle and more of a gentle meander to a place you really want to visit. Here are 3 tips to help you sprinkle a few stories here and there: Talk directly to your audience and the needs you know they have. This will make them feel seen and heard. If you don’t know who your audience are or what they need - do this, quick stat. I share tips on how to do this in Episodes X and X so take a listen back Use a really simple storytelling structure - like once upon a time - or even re-write a popular story like a fairy tale or a movie you’ve watched at the weekend as if you’re customer was the main character…and you were a Yoda-type character guiding them on their journey. Think about the words you use and trying adding in some more emotional or sensory words, describe how things feel, taste, sound, smell as well as just the obvious descriptors to help your audience create a mental picture. For women with something to say, The Everyday Storyteller is a podcast about making your voice matter, one day at a time.5 Star ratings and reviews help other women discover the show and learn how they can make sure their voice matters too. Storytelling. It’s something you have to feel, as well as do. It is not a quick fix. Nor is it something you can always expect immediate returns from. You need to believe in, trust in the process and build it into your everyday, making it a consistent part of the experience you provide your audience.

I’m sure there’s a gizzilion different rules but, I’m all for making storytelling simple for you, so I’ve boiled it down to just three.
Rule no.1 - Be engaging and be yourself. Flaws and all.
Rule no.2 - Show others how you can take them on a journey from where they are now to where they want to be.
Rule no. 3 - Make sure you’re clearly tell others how to get started on that journey with you.

It’s a common misconception that storytelling is all about telling people how much you rock. It’s actually all about meeting needs. If you can show someone how you meet their needs and solve their problem better than the next person, you get the gig.
If you’re just telling people you’re great, you’re not solving any problem or meeting any need (other than possibly that of your own ego but that doesn’t pay the bills!).
In this episode, we explore how real life stories can help you show others how you can change their life.
Note - if you’re struggling to know how to structure your story, here’s a simple framework for you to try. It’s from Building a Storybrand by Donald Millar, a book that’s worth reading if you’re marketing a business.

If you want others to buy into what you have to say, then you need to build trust. That trust doesn’t come from pretending to be someone you’re not, just because you feel you have to be a certain person to succeed.
No, trust comes from others understanding who you really are and what, therefore, this means to them. And how do you help others understand you better? You got it - through sharing your stories.

The ultimate tragedy is when nobody knows just how brilliant you are. In this episode, we’ll explore ways to change that.
Nowadays it’s not enough just to do a great job, you need to be showing other people just what impact you can have on their lives. And this is where your personal brand story comes into its own.
Your story lets your audience into your vision of the world; helping them understand the path you’re on, in order to connect that with their own sense of purpose and values so that they will join you on your mission.
A brand story is made up of 3 parts - your vision, your mission and your values and we will unpick each of these in more detail in future episodes.

There will always be people that don’t like what you have to say. And that’s fine. They’re not ‘your people’, they will probably never buy from you or buy into you.

For women with something to say, The Everyday Storyteller is a podcast about making your voice matter, one day at a time.
The daily show is hosted by Hilary Salzman, a firm believer that our stories are what connect us as people.
In each short episode, I'll share one thing you can do, write or think about to explore your story and create the daily habits and mindset to be your own everyday storyteller.
Together we'll break down the barriers that stop us from using our voices to achieve what you want. Whether that's growing a business, landing a dream job, championing an important cause or getting those you care about to understand you a little bit better.
For too long I let other people write my story for me, I felt guilty for taking up space and I lost sight of who I was.
Well not any longer. I've taken control of my story and so can you.
Through bite-sized information shared daily, along with tips gained through my years as a business storyteller, you'll learn to use your story to unlock your potential, connect to the people that matter and achieve what you deserve in your everyday lives, business, career and relationships.
All whilst having the confidence to say "My voice matters and I'm not afraid to use it"
