This is what the world needs now: two free-thinking “seasoned” Black women speaking their truth. Shaped by 45 years of friendship that began at the prestigious Brooklyn Technical High School through the Ivy League, medical school, marriages, divorces, triumphs, parenting queer children, life-threatening illness and many many amazing adventures. Each week, besties Leslie Osei-Tutu and Angella Fraser will push against boundaries in love, culture, careers, faith, politics and out-dated assumptions about women of a certain age. Remember, you’re never too old to change your mind…or your hair! (but more on that later :-)
A few days of missing daily checkins with Ang leaves Leslie feeling some kinda way: yeah, she’s a jealous bestie.
So join us as Ang gives all the juicy updates of her adventures in Panamá and gives Leslie a few surprises to boot.

Turns out both of us Besties have obsessions. Listen to hear how we navigate our differences with empathy, even if it's forced.

We close out our summer deep dive on Tara Roberts’ Into the Depths podcast by sitting with the final two chapters, “Healing” and “Rooting,” and the question of how we tell the truth without surrendering our joy. From the Sao Jose shipwreck found in South Africa to family land in North Carolina, we discuss evidence, memory, and what repair can look like when we refuse to look away.

This week, we continue with Tara Roberts’ National Geographic podcast Into the Depths, episodes 3 & 4.
Puerto Viejo on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica is where she meets Afro-Costa Rican teen divers bringing up pieces from wrecks linked to Danish slave ships. Should descendants and local communities be the ones who name, interpret, and keep what they find or is it the responsibility of academically trained archeologists? We connect this to familiar patterns of gatekeeping, from Black hair braiding certifications to how African American midwives were pushed aside when institutions decided tradition was not “legitimate” enough.
In episode 4, Tara travels to Africa for the first time and runs into a reality many of us wonder about: Is the dream of a homecoming with open arms a reasonable or a fantastical expectation? We unpack diaspora
identity, the grief of not fully belonging anywhere, and the reframing that may be helpful in finding peace.

Leslie and Angella also share a hilarious listening mistake before announcing their first pick, Into the Depths - Podcast, a powerful series about Black scuba divers searching for slave trade shipwrecks and the history they hold.

Changing your mind can feel like a character flaw, especially when you’ve already said “I’m not doing one more thing.” Then life changes the facts, your schedule shifts, the pressure drops, and suddenly the decision that once felt right needs an update. That’s where The Besties start: one of them decides to add something back into the plan before a major move abroad, and they talk through the judgment that shows up when a pivot is visible to other people.

Your calendar is full, your body is tired, and then a shiny new opportunity shows up and whispers, just add one more thing. Besties Angella and Leslie know that voice well, and they’re putting it on the table with zero filter.
From last-chance travel plans before a major move to the impulse to stack “productive” tasks on top of family time, they trace how overcommitment gets dressed up as responsibility, ambition, or “making the most of it.”

Your phone is full of messages, photos, and threads you swear you’ll scroll back to someday. But what happens when the platform changes, an account disappears, or “someday” never comes? We’re Angella and Leslie, two 60-something Black women from Brooklyn on a joy journey, and we’re making the case for something radically simple: handwritten letters, cards, and real written correspondence.
We dig into why letter writing still matters, from the “juicy” mother-child letters that hold conversations you’d never say out loud on a call, to the boxes of old notes that become a personal archive of love.

We’ve talked for years about writing our story, but talking is safe (and cheap) and the blank page is not. This time we’re doing it: we’re each contributing to a chapter in Kim Coles’ latest anthology Legacy GIFTs, a project built around gratitude, intention, forgiveness, triumphs, and self-love. And once we say it out loud, there’s no hiding from the work of putting pen to paper.
We get honest about what writing feels like in real life, especially when you don’t think of yourself as “a writer.” Leslie shares why drafting can feel like a chore, how intimidating it is to be asked to contribute to a best-selling author’s book, and the very real nerves that show up right before feedback. Angella talks about the power of a consistent writing practice, pacing for a 3,500-word deadline, and why accountability can be both loving and ruthless at the same time.

Legacy can feel like a loaded word, like you need a big house, a perfect family tree, and a fortune to leave behind. We don’t buy that. We’re two 60-something Black women, best friends for almost 50 years, and we’re talking about legacy as something you’re already building right now through your values, your relationships, your stories, and the way you show up in community.
We also shout out a resource we believe in: The Job Liberation Summit for Black Women, co-founded by Dr. Kimani Norrington Sands and Marissa Price. It’s built for Black women navigating layoffs, toxic workplaces, exit strategy planning, financial readiness, and the emotional healing that has to happen alongside liberation. If you’re thinking about freedom, nervous system regulation, and economic autonomy, this belongs on your radar.

Angella is packing up her apartment and moving to Panama. The dream is real and the joy is real, but so is the day-to-day grind. Turning off utilities, figuring out bins, deciding what can fit in a pod, and realizing that “excited” sometimes feels like pure logistics. Leslie says she’s “pre-missing” her bestie, and they don’t gloss over how a 50-year friendship shifts when one of them will soon be living abroad
They are laughing one minute then getting misty the next while discussing the unexpected healing of letting go, and how community rituals and family love make big transitions smoother.

You know that one thing you swear you could never give up? The nightly glass of wine, the “double rice,” the burger that used to hit just right. We get honest about what happens when your body starts telling the truth and you finally listen.
The Besties start this episode with Leslie’s Dry January, not as a trendy detox, but as a real test of discipline. Then the twist hits: when she goes back to drinking, it doesn’t even feel good. That opens the door to a bigger conversation about why willpower gets easier when you realize you’re not actually enjoying the habit anymore.
Their joy journey gets practical as they connect discipline, aging and overall health to the everyday choices that make our bodies feel lighter and our minds feel clearer.

In this episode, the Besties dig into the role judgement plays in impacting one’s joy. In typical fashion, they come to this inquiry by unpacking everyday events that they have differing views about.
Do we make assumptions and judge others too quickly and harshly? If those we judge can’t hear what we say behind their backs, does it mean that our comments are harmless?
Angella and Leslie consider that the impact of this seemingly outward commentary may actually say something more. That it may provide a window to their own inner psyche and may stem from insecurity and self doubt.

Offering tea to a new home health aide who doesn’t speak English spirals into a deeper discussion about how culture, power, and language shape care and dignity. The Besties explore the different worlds they come from. Angella grew up in Jamaica, where domestic help is common and etiquette is clear; Leslie was raised in Brooklyn, where that setup feels rare and historically loaded. That contrast reveals how easy it is to project motives, fumble hospitality, or confuse kindness with condescension.

A recent YouTube video from Stephanie Perry, co-founder of ExodUS Summit, demands that Black people desiring to move abroad, wait until extraction, supremacy, American exceptionalism, and Black excellence (defined here as exalting extraordinary effort and status as the most desirable traits that Black people can have) before going.
The Besties question their readiness, as usual with deep reflection and humor.

Think aging steals happiness? Think again. As Leslie celebrates her 64th birthday.
As The Besties celebrate Leslie’s 64th birthday in Costa Rica, they share stories that are both tender and hilarious, including the moment the mic literally dropped from the makeshift inverted trash can setup and the reasons they’re done with perfectionism for good.
The heart of this episode is love: how limited time makes us braver, softer, and more precise about what we want. We’re choosing depth over drama, laughter over performance, and presence over panic. Whether you’re 26 or 76, you’ll find practical wisdom here.
If this resonated, subscribe, share it with a friend who needs a lift, and leave us a review so more listeners can find their way to intentional joy.

Sexuality often gets boxed into the bedroom, but the truth is it shapes how we move through everything: work, parenting, friendships, faith, and our relationship with our own bodies. That expansive view sits at the heart of The Besties’ conversation with licensed clinical social worker and certified sex therapist Chanta Blue, who helps women release shame and claim pleasure as a birthright. She reminds us that sex is a small piece of a much larger puzzle called sexuality, a lifelong experience that starts with how we name our bodies and continues with how we ask for what we need.

Angella and Leslie discuss caregiver guilt and the risks of letting health gains slip. The Besties of nearly fifty years share how small, steady habits can protect mood, sleep and identity when stress seems to take over life. From intermittent fasting to committing to a Dry January, they map out simple ways to restart. Instead of chasing perfection or waiting for life to “normalize,” they focus on small wins that actually fit messy days.

Ever notice how after the prayers and the crescendo of miracles, the next wave of worry comes to snatch it away? Our family just lived through a medical crisis and a hard-won turn for the better, and we’re honest about the whiplash that followed—insurance calls, care decisions, a home being modified, and the ache of meeting a new reality for a once independent son. Gratitude is real. Grief is real. Both want space. In this episode Besties Angella and Leslie ponder ways to make that space.
Whether you’re navigating recovery, supporting a loved one, or just trying to hold onto good news longer than a weekend, this conversation offers language, practices, and companionship for the middle—where the miracle and the paperwork often meet.
If this resonated, share it with someone who needs it, subscribe for future conversations, and leave a review with one practice that helps you keep joy alive. Your stories help shape what we explore next.

The Besties reflect on a morning of quiet prayer that turned into a cascade of miracles: a son spoke, moved, answered questions, and became eligible for a transfer to acute rehab.
Leslie describes the emotional whiplash of being both a physician and a mom when a loved one is ill. While Besties Angella and Leslie share their relief, they pivot to sharing practical wisdom on the conversations and structures families can have in place when crises arise.

The Besties trace Angella’s pivots from a 30 plus year corporate career in IT to becoming an entrepreneur who works in theater, showing how one bold choice can open a chain of unexpected doors. Craft, culture and courage meet in scenes from The Color Purple, Motown design, and a 40+ wig design for Legally Blonde The Musical.
The heart of the episode explores how many of us, especially Boomers, are wired for “surety”—the prescribed path through degrees, titles, and predictable outcomes but that training often punishes creative risk and keeps us from starting at all.
The episode closes with a call to those who might be feeling a rumble of discontent. Not everyone must rock the boat but if you are restless it might be worth investigate it.

**Changes in menopause are more than just mood and temperature swings; it is a rewiring of bone biology. The Besties sit down again with Dr. Toni Otway, a New Jersey Board Certified OB-GYN physician, to unpack how falling estrogen levels accelerate bone loss, why height can shrink over time, and what it truly takes to prevent fractures that derail independence. Instead of chasing a perfect bone density number, they focus on a smarter target: fracture prevention through timely hormone therapy, evidence-based medications, and daily habits that strengthen bones and reduce falls.
Dr. Otway breaks down the science of menopause-associated bone health in plain language—how bones remodel, why vertebrae compress into microfractures, and the real stakes of a hip fracture.

A FaceTime that wouldn’t connect, a birthday ice cream run, and a red box hidden under a saucer—then four words that change everything: will you marry me? We’re celebrating a surprise engagement that’s decades in the making and unpacking what it means to choose love, with clarity, later in life.
We retrace the moment—how he kept a three-month secret, returned the first ring, and enlisted his sister to find the one that felt right. From there, we go deeper: how our definition of love has shifted from a word to a practice, how small gestures keep closeness alive, and why time, at 63, sharpens decisions. We talk openly about the past marriage, the therapy that helps us own our part, and the language tweaks that prevent a casual “I don’t care” from stepping on someone else’s joy. The wedding conversation gets real: he wants one, she could elope, and we’re designing a plan that respects both preferences without defaulting to old scripts about gender or tradition.
Please follow the show, share it with a friend, and leave a quick review. Tell us: what tradition would you keep—or toss—for your next chapter?

When Emory University professor and scholar Dr. Karida L. Brown began researching America's segregated education system, she didn't expect to uncover a radical history of resistance, innovation, and profound courage. Yet after eight years of meticulous archival work across America and South Africa, that's exactly what she found.
Dr Brown’s latest book, "The Battle for the Black Mind" reveals extraordinary stories of Black women educators who created schools with nothing but vision and determination. Mary Smith Peake risked everything to teach enslaved people to read two decades before Emancipation, establishing a freedom school under an oak tree that still stands on Hampton University's campus today. Lucy Craft Laney built the Haines Normal and Industrial Institute from a church basement into a sprawling educational center spanning two city blocks in Jim Crow Georgia, including the state's first Black nursing school.
Dr Brown, who currently serves on the board of The Obama Presidency Oral History Project, calls these nearly forgotten powerhouses and others like them “Freedom Dreamers”. She says that, "Freedom dreaming is the most radical form of political imagination."

When Leslie confesses she approached Angie for career coaching because "I'm not good at too many things”, the statement stops Angie in her tracks, considering Leslie is an accomplished anesthesiologist who returned to medical school at 36 as a single parent.
This moment of disconnect between achievement and self-perception becomes the catalyst for exploring why we struggle to recognize our own worth.
Their honest exchange demonstrates how trusted relationships can help us challenge our limiting beliefs and see ourselves more clearly.
Ready to examine your own self-imposed limitations? Join us for this eye-opening conversation that might just change how you view your own journey. And if you're looking for more guidance on living joyfully, check out Angela's book "We're Too Old For This"—because at a certain point, we've lived more days than we have left, and we're simply too old to delay joy.

The Besties talk about joy A LOT! And want to make sure that people are getting its true meaning, and what it’s not, to stay clear of all the toxic positivity out there.
Toxic positivity occurs when people don't allow themselves or others to experience hard emotions, quickly trying to move them to a "positive" place.
Joy requires going through difficulty and sometimes involves setting boundaries or doing hard things for long-term fulfillment, and boy is it worth it!

What makes friendships last? The Besties have not only been blessed with their long-standing relationship, but have many others that are intact since elementary school.
They change, yes, but there are some key components that make them last. This week’s episode explores the boundaries, curations, and grace that are behind their friendship successes.
Some topics covered:
• Zero tolerance for gossip and strict confidentiality are core values in their friendship culture
• Learning when to offer validation versus objective perspective takes time in any relationship
• The "urgency of now" reminds us to prioritize meaningful connections in our later years
• A practical friendship filter: would you allow your children to spend time with this person?

Besties Angella and Leslie bring you another episode in The Year of the Menopause series with the return of Dr Toni Otway, a Board Certified OB/GYN physician. She discusses that cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women, yet the connection between menopause and heart health remains dangerously under-discussed. Dr. Otway explains how dropping estrogen levels during menopause dramatically increase women's heart disease risk.
• Estrogen protects cardiovascular health by keeping blood vessels flexible, reducing inflammation, and helping manage cholesterol
• Women's heart attack symptoms often differ from men's classic chest pain, presenting instead as fatigue, shortness of breath, or indigestion
• CDC reports 6% of women over 20 already show signs of cardiovascular disease
• Pregnancy complications like gestational diabetes and preeclampsia are significant risk factors for future heart disease
• Hormone replacement therapy offers cardiovascular benefits when started early in menopause transition
• Women must advocate for themselves against medical gaslighting and ensure doctors follow appropriate screening guidelines
• Prevention through lifestyle changes remains essential alongside appropriate medication when necessary
Don't forget to schedule your regular health screenings and pay attention to changes in your body – your heart health depends on it.

Inspired by Rachel Martin's "Wild Card" podcast, this week, The Besties tackle questions they've never publicly addressed before, creating moments of both profound insight and lighthearted humor.
The episode unfolds with vulnerability as they explore, out loud, deeply personal remembrances like when they first realized their parents weren't infallible beings, when they first felt deep pride in themselves, and what beliefs they no longer hold.
What makes this exchange special is how they navigate these vulnerable territories—pushing each other toward growth while honoring boundaries, demonstrating the beautiful complexity of deep friendship between two sixty-something Black women who've witnessed each other's evolution through decades of life's challenges.
Their willingness to question long-held beliefs and share these journeys invites listeners to examine their own life perspectives and the relationships that have shaped them

Angella and Leslie explore how our relationship with money evolves over time and how true wealth extends beyond financial success to include joy, freedom, and meaningful connections.
• Money as just one form of currency in our lives
• How entrepreneurship offers freedom beyond financial gain
• The shift in perspective that comes when basic financial needs are met
• Cultural expectations around money, especially for Black women
• Redefining generosity and learning to receive as well as give
• The tension between consumerism and finding contentment with less
• Finding value in emotional support, time, and care that money can't buy
We hope this conversation will cause you to think a little more deeply about what you're giving preeminence in your life, what you're expecting from others, and how to recognize the many forms of wealth that exist beyond one's bank account.

Leslie shares a recent experience of being the only Black person at two separate events—a Staten Island sports bar and a New Jersey fundraiser with over 300 attendees. This prompts a revealing conversation about racial segregation in America and the imbalance of cultural immersion between white and Black Americans.
• Black Americans constantly "swim in white waters" while white Americans rarely need to navigate Black spaces
• The myth of equivalence in self-segregation ignores power dynamics and demographic realities
• White people with only one Black friend often make that person the spokesperson for all Black people
• Discomfort in conversations about race should be embraced rather than avoided as it's where growth happens
• Black professionals often face different expectations and must "over-perform" to receive equal respect
• Discomfort in conversations about race should be embraced rather than avoided as it's where growth happens

The Year of Menopause returns with Dr. Toni Otway as she joins the Besties to explore different cultural ideologies of menopause.
• Western societies often frame menopause as women being "put out to pasture" after serving their reproductive purpose
• Many cultures including the Japanese, African, and Mayan societies celebrate menopause as a time for gaining wisdom and elevated social status
• Medical training historically provided minimal education about menopause, focusing only on biological aspects
• Western medicalization often creates anxiety that may worsen menopausal symptoms compared to cultures that embrace the transition
• The Year of Menopause series will continue breaking down menopause topics throughout 2025

Could a 15 minute sermon provide a balm for our politically divided times? Besties Angella and Leslie believe it just might. The Besties explore Episcopal Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde's courageous message delivered during this year’s presidential inaugural prayer service. Her sermon was a rallying call for unity and her deep reflections on the teachings of Jesus Christ struck a powerful chord with Angie and Lez, even as they sparked criticism from the incoming president and many of his followers.
They believe Bishop Budde's sermon, dismissed and mischaracterized by some, stands as a testament to the enduring principles of love, mercy and unity they hold dear. Budde’s words of hope and guidance deserve to be heard in their entirety to appreciate the profound impact they can have.

In this week’s episode, The Besties discovered that a new, yet unused, yellow Schwinn bike harbored a lesson about life's unexpected attachments and the difficulty of letting things go. It was Leslie’s turn to attempt the difficult task of decluttering and emptying her storage unit so she solicited Ange’s help. Afterall, Angie had just cleared out her unit so who would be better to show Les how it was done. And it wasn’t easy.
With Angella's stern but pragmatic approach, and unwavering support, the ladies balance fond memories with the practical need to simplify their lives.
Their humorous stories underline the importance of small steps and the value of seeking help to get unstuck. Through laughter and shared experiences, they hope to inspire you to not only break free from clutter—both physical and financial—but to embrace the changes that promise a brighter, more organized future.

**Leslie woke up one morning, went in to work and said to her boss, “I need a break, I’m going to take several months off”. As a full time anesthesiologist she put aside concerns of what her absence would do to the busy OR schedule or the pinch her colleagues would experience being on call. What she knew (for sure) was that she was fatigued, her mind was distracted, her body was rebelling and she had never taken an extended break from work in her over twenty year career.
In this episode of Black Boomer Besties from Brooklyn Leslie describes to her Bestie Angella what it felt like to direct her caring spirit inward- to wake up late without her usual to-do list, spend time with friends and loved ones, travel and contemplate what retirement might actually feel like.On her first day back to the operating room Leslie immediately felt back at home and recalled why medicine is truly her calling. Her time away from the demands of doctoring showed her that she really missed being away and that balancing a busy career with personal well-being is not only possible but essential. She could certainly see herself moving toward retirement- just no time soon.

She described the transformative potential of house-sitting as a way to experience life in new places, both locally and abroad. The TrustedHousesitters app provides a gateway to affordable travel, new experiences and an unconventional way to embark on global adventures.

Their upcoming Masterclass promises to arm you with tools, information and strategies to tackle the fear of leaving toxic jobs, craft personalized financial exit plans, and stride confidently toward independence.
The conversation is sprinkled with the usual Besties humor as the guests peel back the layers of identity intertwined with careers, exploring how societal pressures keep many Black women tethered to jobs that drain rather than sustain and empower.

Imagine navigating almost five decades of friendship without needing to explicitly say "I'm sorry". Besties Angella and Leslie give you a view of their unique connection where grace and understanding have forged a path through conflicts without the need for conventional exchange of apologies. Inspired by Malcolm Gladwell's TED Talk, "The Tipping Point I Got Wrong," they reflect on the art of apologizing and how it intertwines with accepting responsibility for being wrong.
Gladwell’s talk centers on his previous endorsement of the former NYC Police Department policy referred to as Stop and Frisk where between 2003 and 2013, over 100,000 stops were made per year. It became the subject of a racial-profiling lawsuit because 90% of those stopped were Black & Latino. In his talk, Gladwell admits that his prior comments about the policy were wrong and offers an “apology”.
Besties Angella and Leslie dissect the components of an apology and critique the common tendency to prioritize self-justification over genuine remorse. They examine their own relationship and appreciate the supportive environment they’ve cultivated over 46 years.

Get out your travel docs because the Besties are taking you on a trip. Angella is beginning to realize her travel dreams of circling the world and ‘dating a city” by accepting a house-sitting opportunity on the West coast. Inspired by the Exodus Summit community and the chance to “bop around the world” (as Stephanie Perry puts it), she explains her excitement around using house and pet sitting as a chance to explore remote locations and scope out her future life living abroad.
In this episode Angella and Leslie discuss the logistics of such a move and some of the benefits that come with it- cultural immersion, living like a local and saving on the cost of luxury accommodations.
As usual, the Besties discussion turns comedic as Leslie recalls some of her international ‘adventures’- a terrifying horseback ride up a volcano in Guatemala and a recent trip to a rainforest in Costa Rica where she described thumb sized beetles flying around her head.
With plenty of humor, curiosity, and a touch of wanderlust, this episode is a vibrant invitation to consider the enriching world of house-sitting and the friendships it may forge along the way.

In her enlightening book The Afrominimalist’s Guide to Living With Less, Christine Platt invites us to imagine a world in which we curate a life of intention free of clutter and chaos (but not the monochromatic, rigid guidelines often linked to the Euro-centric minimalism)
This week, Besties Angella and Leslie consider the question of whether embracing Afrominimalism could transform not just their living spaces, but their entire perspectives on their lives. They wonder if, as Platt suggests, downsizing may provide a path to deeper understanding and cultural empowerment and that by moving to smaller spaces that path may be made clearer.
Angella also gives us an update on an exciting house sitting opportunity that she is about to begin. She sees this trip as an opportunity to ‘date’ a new city in her quest to travel around and possibly relocate abroad.

Besties Angella and Leslie wonder why they hold on to things they don’t actually need. All the ‘stuff’ that fills their homes, their closets and too often their expensive storage units. Angella describes her painful experience with downsizing and ultimately losing items that once anchored her and her family. Leslie, on the other hand, is at the beginning of that very journey - trying to navigate moving about in multiple locations while also saying goodbye to a larger more accommodating home. They speak of the emotional toil created by the over abundance of physical possessions and how it often gives rise to a mental heaviness and unease.
**As usual, the Besties weave a poignant conversation with a humorous one as they consider a “Marie Kondo” style purge to tackle the clutter they’ve accumulated over the years. They describe resisting thrift store temptations and the reality check of necessary financial restraint. They resolve to clear the physical and mental clutter that bogs them down and look forward in the next episode to a deeper examination of the psychology of consumerism, accumulation and collecting and why they find it so difficult to live a more minimalist existence.

**Leslie has been feeling quite tired lately. Actually, she would say she was exhausted. It was so bad that for only the first time in more than 20 years she overslept for work. For Leslie, an anesthesiologist, oversleeping means that there is a surgeon, staff of nurses and a patient being delayed and waiting for her. She came up with what she saw as a simple solution- she would buy an alarm clock. When her bestie Angella heard of this plan, she at first listened incredulously then burst out laughing. While Leslie at first didn’t know what was so funny, the conversation that ensued turned quite serious and thought provoking.
What if an alarm clock isn’t the answer to a chaotic schedule but instead requires a closer look at how you're managing a stressful time in your life? The Besties’ banter, representing a nearly 50 year friendship, is more than just fun and games; it reveals the layers of support, grace and humor that keeps their friendship strong and resilient. Their candid conversation highlights the importance of recognizing one's limits and the power of self-care, reminding us that rest and rejuvenation are not just luxuries, but necessities.

**What happens when your country’s political decision leaves you feeling anxious and uncertain? In this episode of Black Boomer Besties from Brooklyn Angella and Leslie recount personal feelings of navigating the emotional aftermath of the 2024 US presidential election. Angella describes how she found solace in the power of community, connecting with like-minded women through a chat group, highlighting the importance of vulnerability and honesty in maintaining supportive networks.
Leslie shared that her voting strategy integrated consideration of the welfare of vulnerable populations, revealing how personal needs and preferences do not have to be divorced from what she believed to be her civic responsibility. During this particular time of stress The Besties discuss the transformative healing power of stepping out of comfort zones-to discover how small moments of joy and connection can be a lifeline amidst times and feelings of chaos.

Besties Angella and Leslie are outraged when they come across an image of a T-shirt worn by former Pittsburgh Steelers player Le’Veon Bell labeling Vice President Kamala Harris as a tramp. They discuss this offensive wardrobe choice and how it serves as a disturbing reminder of the persistent stereotypes and unrealistic expectations placed on Black women. They unpack these issues, urging a re-examination of how character and values are portrayed, especially within our own communities.
The conversation takes a deeper dive into the complexities and limitations of stereotypes, particularly those associated with Black women and political figures like Kamala Harris and how these stereotypes obscure the rich nuances of individual identities and perpetuate misleading narratives. It’s a rich conversation for sure, one that you’ll want to share with folks whose opinions you care about.

What if you could start a life transformation by "dating a city"? Consider that intriguing idea inspired by The Exodus Summit, a virtual conference co-founded by Stephanie Perry and Rashida Dowe designed to empower Black women to embrace the possibilities of global living. In this episode of Black Boomer Besties from Brooklyn, Angella shares her experience of attending this year’s Exodus Summit, and how the event sparked a reimagining for her of life living beyond the US borders. She speaks excitedly about some of the sessions she attended and introduced Leslie to the benefits of downsizing through Christine Platt's "The Afro Minimalist's Guide to Living with Less**." With the arrival of her newest niece, baby Sonia Minnette, Angella describes the rich family legacy behind the name Minette, which links to her Costa Rican ancestry- providing further impetus for her to consider Costa Rica as a possible future landing spot. As the Besties approach their two-year podcast anniversary, they find themselves in a reflective mood, revisiting the themes of personal growth and intellectual curiosity that provided the impetus to starting the podcast in the first place.

Besties Angella and Leslie contrast recent interviews with authors Coleman Hughes and Ta-Nehisi Coates in which they discuss their respective books dealing with racial politics, racism and identity.
In his 2024 book, The End of Race Politics: Arguments for a Colorblind America, Hughes discusses the possibilities and implications of a ‘colorblind’ America while in The Message, Coates describes his trips to three global regions and the chasm between written narratives and often harsh realities.
Angella and Leslie consider and contrast two recent interviews with these authors: One now viral one with Ta-Nehisi interviewed by CBS journalist Tony Dokoupil, the other was Coleman Hughes’ interview on the podcast On Point with Meghna Chakrabarti.
The episode underscores the benefit of framing questions with curiosity and respect, highlighting how the art of interviewing can either bridge or divide our grasp of contentious issues like racial and national identity or the legitimacy of political boundaries.

Angella has written a juicy and joyful eBook called “We’re Too Old for This Shit: The Inquisitive Older Woman’s Guide to More Joy’.
It begins with a bold reminder that older women are ready and the time to put joy front & center is now:
…as mature women, we literally are too old for some of the draining things we still allow to loom large in our life.
We’re too experienced, too accomplished, too wise, too evolved, and lived too much of our lives to tolerate another day of deferring our joy…
The Book is full of expansive yet practical tips for creating a life that centers the joy - the deep well of fulfillment and satisfaction - that we’ve earned.
Women often bear the weight of familial responsibilities while sacrificing personal happiness in the process. The Besties challenge the idea of sacrifice as a badge of honor and advocate for finding joy through self-awareness. By using techniques like the "five whys," they explore how to uncover the root causes of our actions and beliefs, leading to a more personalized approach to contentment. The episode wraps up with heartwarming stories about new friendships and the value of honesty and self-awareness in personal growth. Don't miss the heartfelt practical insights on living a joy-filled life.

As a child, Leslie's great-grandmother habitually scrubbed the knees and elbows of her and her siblings at bathtime in hope of banishing the darker areas of their bodies. Ouch! and WTF!
Nana Lena, born in the early 1900s, experienced first hand the societal advantages of being a Black woman with a lighter skin tone. She believed it right and proper to afford her beloved great grands the same opportunities. Judge her as you may, she was a product of her lived experience and the societal hierarchy of the time.
In this episode, The Besties take a provocative look at colorism; challenging the definition itself and the appropriateness of their role - as two less melanated Black people - to critically discuss a system where their spot on the complexion spectrum is more privileged. Should this be rightfully left to folks on the darker, more negatively impacted, side of the gradient?

Angella and Leslie draw attention to the complex relationship between colorism and racism. Is "we're all Black people" akin to “all lives matter”? While at the same time acknowledging both their privileged and painful personal memories from the characterization of the “redbone”, “light-skin”, “fair-skin” girl.

The Besties take you on a journey back to a cherished time in their lives when they were children being doted on by their grandparents. Leslie grew up in Brooklyn in a brownstone where up to five generations lived at one time whereas Angella recalls fond early years in Jamaica being loved and cared for by her grandparents. This is a nostalgic episode full of funny memories, family dynamics and the budding cultural awareness of the 60s. They even share stories about how they each were introduced to coffee.
Angella and Leslie transition to exploring the legacies that they may be leaving for future generations and how they might want to be remembered. They conclude that as they themselves become elders they acknowledge their obligation to impart information, guidance, and pass on traditions to their families.

Back in the day (that’s in the mid-70s for Leslie & Angie), Saturday mornings meant cartoons interspersed cereal commercials and Schoolhouse Rock. Schoolhouse Rock is a series of educational cartoons with catchy songs that made learning things like science, math, and civics fun and made the information stick.
As political discourse increases around the impending 2024 election, The Besties recall a childhood where knowing civics was expected, and made easier by ditties such as “The Preamble” from Schoolhouse Rock. Those foundational lessons continue to influence their understanding of civics rights and responsibilities, and why voter suppression is a particular pet peeve.
The goal? To inspire proactive engagement and vigilance in the electoral process, emphasizing the critical role it plays at the state and local levels.

**This episode is a rebroadcast of a previously aired recording from 2022, around the time the Besties started their podcast. It is revisited this week as a reminder of the importance of embracing flexibility, stepping out on faith and having the courage to make life altering changes. The message remains as timely now as it had been two years ago.
Original Notes:**
During a roller coaster work situation, Angella felt increasing discontent about giving a select few decision-making power over her livelihood. So she took a leap of faith into entrepreneurship. Big pivots are inherently risky but sometimes when you know, you just know. Listen again to her story about the empowerment she felt in leaving a 30 year corporate IT career. After nearly 20 years at one of the world's top tech companies she has become founder and CEO of HeadSpace NC, a beauty and advocacy company.

Something has been nagging Ang. She just couldn’t let go of a listener's question from The Besties’ live guest spot on Dr. Kimani Norrington-Sands' @liftingasweclimbconsulting; “How do you know what your joy is?” A spark of insight surfaced during her Morning Writing and, of course, she took it to her bestie, Les.
Most people have felt at some point that they don’t quite fit in; do you tend to see a bigger goal or wonder why risks are ignored when it’s an obviously bad decision? The feeling has a consistent thread across various groups (family, friends, or colleagues, etc), time, or circumstances. Well, Ang thinks that it’s more of a knowing than a feeling, and that it may be a clue to where your joy is. As always, Les is willing to indulge her pal’s hypothesis.
In their signature style of mixing humor with insight, The Besties discuss the possibility that the feeling may be a gateway to uncovering what truly brings you joy. This episode is a celebration of the quirky and unique aspects of who you are.

Can the relentless pursuit of excellence be more performative than purposeful? In the continued conversation with NC Poet Laureate Jaki Shelton Green, the Besties inquire about Jaki’s views on the Black Excellence archetype with the hopes and realism placed on the potential of a Kamala Harris presidency. Reflecting on her personal journey and her mother's wisdom, Jaki challenges the notion of seeking external validation and illuminates the importance of finding joy in oneself. The discussion examines the societal expectations and classism that can be pervasive within Black communities, providing a nuanced critique of what excellence means today.
Jaki recounts her enriching experiences as a young creative with icons like Amiri Baraka, Sonia Sanchez, and Audre Lorde. Their mentorship and camaraderie have shaped her path, highlighting the past and present dynamics of literary communities. As traditional spaces become more fragmented, Jaki underscores the importance of creating inclusive spaces for literary expression. Additionally, she introduces us to her unique Human Museum project, which has sparked enthusiasm among her peers and challenges us to think about how we curate our own life's artifacts.
The episode wraps up with an invitation to listeners to write a letter to the curator of their own human museum, encouraging reflection on personal narratives. We celebrate Jaki's collaborative exhibit "The Communion of White Dresses" and tease the exciting possibilities of future creative retreats aimed at fostering community among Black women.

Note: This episode was planned, recorded and scheduled to air prior to the alleged assassination attempt on candidate and former President Trump on July 13, 2024.
Angella and Leslie challenge conventional beliefs about the intersection of faith and politics, comparing them to what they see as a troubling trend. Inspired by a thought-provoking YouTube video from the Midas Touch channel, "New Turn the Tables on Trump Expose Movement" featuring Politics Girl, they detail their own Christian journeys and discuss the metaphor of faith as a mansion with many rooms. The Besties share their personal experiences of loving Christ in their own ways and they reflect on some of their struggles- from church hurt to hypocrisy, within some faith communities.
Moreover, Angella and Leslie discuss what appears to be an evolution of traditional Christian Evangelism toward white nationalism. They point out the discordance between the Biblical depiction of a loving God who commands us to love thy neighbor with the exclusionary, often racially biased cohort or views the Republican candidate as the next Messiah.

In this episode, Angella and Leslie introduce you to former postpartum doula, Gayle L. Walker, the powerhouse behind the company Life Doula, LLC. Life Doula is Gayle’s brainchild that emerged after the convergence of several formidable life experiences: retiring as a nurse for the US Navy, supporting a close friend and her family after they welcomed their first child and caring for caregivers faced with making sense of (and room for) their parents’ belongings.
While she was serving in these situations, Gayle noted the emergence of a common theme: effective organization and decluttering created space- mentally, emotionally, and physically.
Gayle shares practical strategies and emotional insights about downsizing and letting go of possessions, drawing from personal anecdotes like the challenge of parting with her decades old military uniforms.

The practical question of which box to choose on a dating app unlatched the gate of the assumption that romantic love would always and only be with a man.
In typical Besties fashion, a provocative conversation unfolds delving in the intersection of their Christian faith, societal norms, aging, and life’s yet unmet desires.
Through it all, Angella and Leslie emphasize the importance of continuous self-discovery and the rejection of societal pressures to conform.

Do people always put forth their best effort? This episode of Black Boomer Besties from Brooklyn begins with Angella sharing a personal story about selling her son's car and the complications that arose when the buyer delayed payment. It sparked a compelling debate between her and Leslie about whether people genuinely do their best or if skepticism is warranted. With candor and humor, they navigate the murky waters of trust, human behavior, intentions and accountability.
Is striving for excellence always necessary, or is good enough sometimes good enough? Through passionate anecdotes and societal observations, they explore what it means to put forth one's best effort and when it's okay to be intentionally just ‘adequate’. From parenting moments to career commitments, they explore the situations that truly warrant one's full attention. The "rubber or glass" analogy, for example, helped them reflect on the events and tasks that may have lasting impact versus those that one can bounce back from with minimal effect.
Angella and Leslie recognize that forgiveness and belief in people's best intentions are not merely abstract concepts rather they may be emotional landmines. Ange recounted the experience of unblocking someone she had previously cut off, choosing to offer grace rather than condemnation.
In closing, The Besties posit that time will likely reveal the true nature of someone's efforts (or lack thereof). They decide that it may be better to be less judgmental and choose to acknowledge a better side of human behavior.

Leslie and Angella reunite after what seemed like ages. Leslie has been traveling outside of the country for the past several weeks while Angella is on the west coast in Oregon supporting the relocation of her youngest son. It seems like this young man is well on his way to adulting- lucrative new job in his chosen field, great first apartment overlooking the Columbia River and his eyes set on a beautiful new muscle car (taking after his Dodge-loving Mom).
Leslie, on the other hand, has returned all tanned and (somewhat) relaxed from two weeks in Costa Rica. She went out on a recognizance mission of sorts in search of possible relocation venues while Ange frequently interjected, reminding her to make sure to include her in any future plans. The Costa Rica trip took Leslie and friends from the northwestern Guanacaste region, through the more central Arenal Volcano in La Fortuna, further to the capitol in San Jose, then to the rainforest in Tortuguera.
The experience in the rainforest was certainly unforgettable. Soaking rainstorms, howling monkeys, clothing that never dries, beautiful birds and animals, and bugs and beetles that were truly terrifying. Leslie described the boat rides required to get to their lodging and her experience staying in a screened treehouse during her stay.
Leslie’s favorite, and less frightening, venue was in Costa Rica’s southeastern region of Limon in the town of Puerto Viejo. There she was able to relax and commune with the region's Caribbean food and flair.
The episode ends with Leslie reassuring her bestie that wherever she may decide to relocate to, she’ll be sure to make it a trip for two.

When Leslie listened to a podcast that discussed the role of a death doula she was intrigued. She was accustomed to the ins and outs of establishing an estate plan, but the work of a death doula was completely foreign. Is the concept new to you?

Ever wondered how you'll be spending your days when you're 90? Leslie was fascinated by The 90+ Study conducted at UC Irvine so in this episode the Besties went in.
In 2003, investigators began to look at “the oldest-old” in one of the largest studies of this group of people ever conducted, to determine the factors contributing to longevity. One of the fascinating findings included a participant who was seemingly resistant to the outward signs of Alzheimer's disease (e.g. memory loss, cognitive decline) even though his autopsied brain showed clear markers of the disease.
The Besties discuss the likelihood that adoption of Health 2.0 influenced behaviors described by Peter Attia proactive strategies for longevity, like planning for our future wellness, might be the best bet. Imagine continuing the passions that color one's youth, all while staying cognitively resilient. That would indeed be something to look forward to. After over 30 years of suburban living, Ange followed through on her desire to go back to urban living. Her Brooklyn-soul had been yearning for the energy of people moving about or at the bus stop, hearing familiar music coming from cars, walking to coffee and restaurants.
Ange is admittedly nostalgic but also a realist. The mosaic of city life is not without its complexities, as the social intricacies of her new neighborhood unfold even in the first few days.
Memories from college days at Penn where she was reprimanded for ‘self-segregating’ came flooding back as she reflected on her need to be in spaces where she was not a curiosity as a Black person.
**This episode is a candid look at the trade-offs of urban living, such as foregoing in-unit laundry for the conversations and connections in the local laundromat (Les thinks she has lost her mind on this one), and a commitment to plant roots here for at least a year until God shows her her next.

We bring you this week the lesser told stories of two African American pioneers: Pauli Murray and Bayard Rustin. They are two pivotal yet often unheralded champions of the Civil Rights Movement, whose legacies intertwine with the fabric of America's ongoing quest for equality. In this episode Angella and Leslie discuss two screen depictions of the remarkable lives and contributions of these trailblazers, whose courageous battles against injustice were further complicated by their LGBTQIA+ identities.
We highlight Pauli's visionary legal strategies that reshaped gender equality laws and Bayard's strategic genius in organizing the March on Washington, revealing a deeper understanding of their lasting impact on the world we live in today.

**Unless you've been hiding under a rock, you've likely seen and heard about the public hearings of GA District Attorney Fani Willis. DA Willis is prosecuting the alleged Georgia election fraud trial of former President Trump and has found herself in her own legal entanglement. Willis is being accused of hiring a former romantic partner to gain financially from the prosecution.
Regardless of which side you find yourself — whether you believe this is her personal business and not relevant to the prosecution case, or yes, she's guilty of inappropriate use of taxpayer funds and thus should be removed from the case, or even 'how dare she behave with such arrogance and disrespect on the stand — one thing is clear: the outcome will reverberate across America and the world.**
Besties Angella and Leslie have been consumed by the proceedings. In this episode they discuss the hearing from an African American cultural perspective by dissecting the trope of ‘Black Excellence’, that familiar category that (in Ange’s view) has present day adjacency to being/or not a ‘credit to your race’.
Black folks are raised to internalize that we must be, act, dress, enunciate, and strive better than our peers as any mistake is often magnified and discredits the community as a whole by the white gaze. Even more so for Black women, who have the added burden of the judgment of race-agnostic sexism.
What is clear is that Fani Willis is a skilled and successful prosecutor and litigator with a long list of accomplishments under her belt. Despite her being the victim of violent threats and vandalism of her home, she has brought an extraordinarily important charge to hold an election-stealing attempt to justice. As such, are we missing the forest for the trees?

“Waiting until retirement age to start living is a scam!” Well, that is guest Stephanie Perry’s stance on why she has made it her goal to get Black women to “take career breaks, bop around the world, or move abroad all while embracing ease”
The Besties have mentioned her several times as a model of free-living, unapologetically choosing ease, and a window into the world of what she refers to as the “adult gap year”.
Stephanie’s transformation started when she gave herself free time, through travel, to find the part of herself that she might not have allowed to surface otherwise. Your value, she says, is in who you are, not in what you do. Especially for Black women who carry the weight of the stress of so many societal “isms”
The Besties couldn’t get enough of Stephanie Perry, creator of the popular YouTube channel, a full time house-sitter, creator of House Sitter School, co-creator with Roshida Dowe of ExodUS Summit and just all around cool sister-friend. So make sure you tune in next week for Part 2 of one of their most riveting conversations thus far.

People don’t relish talking about pain. Valid. So let’s talk about pain relief.
Dana Karen (DK) Ciccone’s journey with pain started suddenly at age 13 while performing a solo in the musical Godspell at a local theater. It was her effort to seek (and find) relief that led to her commitment to help others move their bodies in order to “conquer chronic pain, increase stress resilience, and reclaim an active life”.
DK found Pilates to be quite helpful, leading her to later become a certified Pilates instructor with specialized training in pain reprocessing therapy. Her work with clients also uncovers their fears and personal narratives around movement and healing. After the body repairs the physical injury, she discovered that stress and anxiety from potential pain can itself become a source of prolonged disability.
You’re Meant to Move is the title of DK’s empathetically written, medically sound, and action-based new book.
Think pain is normal as we age? The Besties addressed this common belief once before with guest Chesha Hodge, MPA, RDN (Embrace Healthier Nutritional Choices). These two experts challenge this myth.

**For several years Ange has adopted a daily writing practice that she attributes to changing her life.
She describes this, now ritual, as a stream of consciousness style that strengthens her connection to God, answers questions, challenges assumptions, and allows her to be her most vulnerable, without judgment. Lately, she has opened her writing time for others to join to reap the benefits of their own practice. Leslie, on the other hand, is in awe, believing its power but convinced she could never do it.**
The Besties have an unguarded discussion about possible reasons for Leslie’s resistance. Is it fear, and if so, fear of what?

**Katt Williams said whaaaat???
In his recent interview on Club Shay Shay****, Shannon Sharp’s popular online show, comedian Katt Williams almost broke the internet. His nearly 3 hour appearance skyrocketed to 37 million views within hours. He had to “tell the truth couldn’t let the lies stand” after some fellow comedic contemporaries were earlier guests. And boy did he go all in. He had folks clutching their pearls!
The Besties (esp. Ang) were hooked and share their candid opinions in this episode.**

How long do you keep your clothing? If you’re anything like Leslie, decades; scores, even. Leslie admits that the sweater she is wearing was gifted to her by their dear friend (guest on S1E10), the actress Kim Coles nearly 30 years ago. She worries that at this rate, her wardrobe will likely outlive her. Angie calls her out and Leslie finally admits “I got too much” before her segue into the meat of the conversation - a new adult party game called “Am I Trippin**”.
Creator Reecie Colbert**, a no holes barred Black radio host & commentator, presents controversial realistic scenarios that demands partygoers take sides. And the Besties do just that with all the humor and smarts for which they are well-known.

To hear these Besties talk, one would think that one of them is a doctor! But all jokes aside, Leslie is not giving medical advice here. The Besties discuss a recent experience when faced with the high costs of prescription drugs and healthcare in general in America. Leslie’s in shock at learning that her new copayment will be for her migraine medication - several thousand dollars (her headache disappeared immediately!).
We are told that America has the best medical care but what about those who don’t have financial or digital access? There are so many countries, even “poor” ones that provide universal healthcare to their populations. Hmmm, perhaps the Besties will consider moving abroad like the ExodUS Summit encourages. It’s a virtual conference for Black women planning a sabbatical, expat move, or nomadic life abroad. Co-founders Stephanie Perry and Rhoshida Dowe have been advocates for living outside of the US and they’ve caught Ange’s attention. Stay tuned for updates.

**Are you OK with not being everybody’s cup of tea or do you prefer that everyone thinks you’re the bee’s knees? People pleasing may be just too much pressure for The Besties.
So when Les asks: “Who wouldn’t want to be partnered with you [Ang]?”, a deep discussion ensues about how we bring our authentic selves to relationships with respect, grace, and truth as necessary components. With these in place, one becomes free to choose how to adapt to make partnerships work well. Love can be a powerful motivator for change.**

Hope your Christmas Day - if it’s your tradition - was everything you hoped.
Leslie struggles with this season and couldn’t be happier that January is almost here. No, she’s not particularly looking forward to starting a new year, rather she's thrilled that the Christmas season is drawing to a close. In this episode Leslie explains to Angella her “scrooge-esque” reticence to celebrate the joys of the season and why she thinks there needs to be a complete paradigm shift in the way that we celebrate the birth of Our Saviour. Angella on the other hand urges her bestie to consider some of the older traditions and reminisce about some of the joyful memories that they hold.

Would any fears arise if you were to consider having a boudoir photoshoot? This week’s guest may put all of them to rest. Olesha Haskett is a published photographer whose focus on boudoir made her aware of specific needs of Black women/female identifying people that were not being met. She created community for Black boudoir photographers and unapologetically educates on how others can become more deeply inclusive.
Beyond and before the photoshoot itself, guiding women (most of them older) through the mental reframing of one’s self-acceptance and self-love is a necessary part of the process. You may be surprised by the surprising differences Olesha has found between Black & white clients’ reasons for wanting to capture a boudoir experience on film.

When Leslie had a little fender bender with a parked car, and the owner nowhere in sight, she had a decision to make. Should she leave a note with her information or would it be ok if she left, hoping the owner’s insurance would cover the cost?

This week they bring to you Part 1 of a two part interview with Karl Chen, Esq. Karl is an estate and business planning attorney whose practice revolves around Estate Planning, Probate Matters and Business Law issues for businesses and individuals. Before they get into financial matters, though, the old high school friends meander down memory lane.
Clearly, their classmates from NYC’s elite Brooklyn Technical High School Class of 1980 form quite a successful and supportive village (check out Pam Skinner from S3: Black Legacies Matter, Kay Benjamin from S3: More Stories on Caribbean Ancestry, and Kim Coles from S1: Coach Kim Coles is in the Building)
Karl has been on quite a circuitous journey indeed: pivots galore and a disappointing “un”encounter that led to the book Think & Grow Rich that totally changed the trajectory and outlook of his life.
Come back for Part 2 for Estate Planning essentials.

This week has been a week of deadlines for Ang - commitments to theater, making custom wigs, and preparing for her first (of many, God-willing) talk on the topic of Black Hair Culture. Leslie keeps firing questions like she’s sitting at the feet of a sage - LOL.
There’s so much more than meets the eye when it comes to the culture of Black hair and Ang just wants to shout it from the rooftops. The Besties start Season 5 with a heady discussion about voting and the devastation caused by the war in Israel.
Today is Election Day in the US where many local and state representatives will be decided. Since few voters realize the impact of these elections on their day-to-day lives, focusing instead on the presidential ones every 4 years, Leslie & Angie make a plea for getting out and making all voices be heard.
Conceding that this is not a politically-based podcast, they find it important to add their views on the bloodshed in southern Israel and Gaza to the cacophony of opinions.
In fact this podcast was created to bring the perspectives of two free-thinking 60-something year old Black women from Brooklyn. And bring it they did.

Leslie felt left out when Angella appeared on television and didn't tell her about it ahead of time. She couldn’t understand why Angella downplayed it as “no big deal”. The incident led the Besties into a discussion about the ways in which we tend to judge ourselves and engage in negative self talk. Others may recognize our accomplishments while we experience imposter syndrome.
As Season 4 comes to a close, remember why this podcast was created: to remind you to live out loud and honor the unique ways you show up in the world.

Do you ever reflect on your past to remind yourself of the mountains you’ve climbed, the monsters you’ve vanquished, and the lessons you’ve learned? One Bestie does, and thinks it’s a necessity; the other doesn’t and wouldn’t even know where to start.
Ange, the entrepreneur and deep thinker, ran into a dilemma as she did some "mining" of her accomplishments throughout her career: she uncovered a new viable income-generating idea that also totally aligns with how she wants to serve. Should she stay focused on her current, long-term plan or detour to this new juicy one?
All singularly-focused-for-life-Lez seems to care about is how much time will be left for her in this equation. The comically contentious dialog unfolds in this new episode. If you enjoy this episode or our podcast overall, we welcome your support.

**Open wide and say “AHHH-Mazing”! That’s what Ange and Lez thought of the revelatory information Dr. Nicole McGrath Barnes shared. Dr. Nicole is a longtime friend and a New Jersey based pediatric dentist who is saving the lives of marginalized children, one mouth at a time.
Oral health is the gateway to total health and is a number one preventable disease. Poor oral health can lead to diabetes, heart disease, low birth weight newborns and other conditions that few would link to the mouth as the source. Seeing the inequities of a broken oral healthcare system firsthand, Dr. Nicole established Kindersmile Foundation in 2007. Kindersmile has treated and educated more than 40,000 children at its 3 locations in NJ and throughout the world.
This episode explores the tragic stories that touched Dr. Nicole deeply and led her to pivot from a profitable private practice and why she feels joy from knowing that she has transformed the trajectories of children and their families. Clitoris. Say it out loud: Clit-o-ris. That glorious organ of the female/traditionally female body has been a topic that Angella has brooded over since listening to Maria Rosok’s TED Talk and learning about Sophia Wallace’s Cliteracy **movement (no pun intended), a couple of years ago.
In her then 58 yrs, she had never learned anything about the significance, size, or sensitivity of this important part of her body. She felt robbed. She was angry! Of course Leslie heard all about this outrage. To add insult to injury, Leslie recalled that the clitoris was never mentioned in anatomy class in medical school. But the stars aligned and as it turns out, Leslie’s colleague had done extensive historical & anatomical research on this amazing pleasure center.**
In this long awaited episode, the Besties talk with Princeton NJ based gynecologist Dr Maria Sophocles. Dr Sophocles has a thriving medical practice where her 25,000+ patients come from all over the country to receive gender and culturally affirming gynecologic care.
Angella, Leslie and Maria discuss the patriarchal biases and restraints placed on the clitoris specifically and female genitalia in general, and how these constraints permeate society. Lean in as the Besties explore all things clitoris.

**Leslie lost a friend last week. She wanted to honor him by speaking his name and saying goodbye; something she wasn't able to do because he went into solitude a few years before his death.
Dr Andrew Citron left behind two daughters and a wife of 29 years when he lost his two year battle with a rare brain cancer. Leslie first met Andy 16 years ago when she interviewed with him for her current position as a staff anesthesiologist.
They bonded and formed a friendship from the very beginning. Dr Citron was not only a talented anesthesiologist but he was also her boss, a mentor, a friend and an ear to listen empathetically during those rare but inevitable tough times in the operating room. Andy was funny, in a soft spoken way, and he was so good-natured that Leslie often told him he was too much of a pushover to be anybody’s boss.
This episode is a cathartic conversation about her loss. Through tears, she talks about her connection to Andy, wondering if he knew that he held a special place in her heart. The Besties contemplate to what extent the dying should consider the grief of those left behind.**

**It started out innocently enough - Leslie called Angie to talk about what she called a “pet peeve”. Why do some Black women wear satin sleep bonnets outside the house?
In this episode you’ll hear the besties discuss this seemingly superficial issue and watch it turn into a more serious conversation about respectability politics. Did Dr Martin Luther King Jr and his fellow marchers get any less violent reactions from police than did The Black Panthers? Should being seen as “respectable” continue to be the expectation of Black & brown people?**

Respectability Politics (according to Wikipedia): a political strategy wherein members of a marginalized community will consciously abandon controversial aspects of their cultural-political identity as a method of assimilating, achieving social mobility, and gaining the respect of the majority culture. As a sociological term, it is often pejorative, typically used in a manner critical of the ideology.

In 2020 the Pew Research Center determined that although, Black people represented 14.2% of all Americans they are only 2.4% of all employer-firm owners. The Federal Reserve System’s 2021 Small Business Credit Survey (SBCS) revealed that the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated the challenges that small businesses owned by people of color faced prior to the pandemic.
Leslie and Angella are well aware of these disparities in Black business ownership and they have long been committed to supporting Black owned businesses with their patronage and recommendations. **Laughter warning: they're together again! After an intense work month at the theater, Ang visits Les to hit the thrift stores for a wardrobe update. In this delightful episode, Ang is in pajamas not knowing that while she slept, Les was called in to work on a case at the hospital at 5:00AM.
The Besties have gotten thrifting for clothes down to a science - quality, style, fit (alterations are never a problem because they can both sew, remember S1 E1), and price. Les tends to push Ang a bit out of her comfort zone and she's here for it! New outfits are one way to feel fresh, joyful, and sexy and it can be done without breaking the bank.
Spirits are high because the besties are both on new eating and exercise plans after their lab results (committed to in S2 E8 with guest Registered Dietician Chesha Hodge****) showed elevated cholesterol levels. Leslie and Angella first met at Brooklyn Technical High School in 1977 as sophomores, two undercover nerds. They could never have imagined all that this bond would get them through over the next 46 years.

Sit down, get comfortable and listen to the multigenerational stories of one family’s tragedies and triumphs. Besties Angella and Leslie talk to storyteller and family archivist (and fellow Brooklyn Tech class of ‘80 alum) Pamela Skinner who has made it a mission to chronicle stories of her family from their southern roots as enslaved persons through their migrations north to New York City.
Pamela unveils compelling narratives about the importance of preserving a legacy for future generations. A family torn by tragedy, yet resolute in finding ways to thrive, will leave you with a range of emotions; from sadness and sympathy to laughter and triumph. What is particularly satisfying about this episode is the mix of glimpses of everyday life in beautiful Black communities and the larger than life barrier-breakers like her grand aunt’s successful wrongful death lawsuit against a railroad company in 1913 and her aunt Mary Emmeline Godfrey, becoming the first African American full-time faculty member hired at Penn State in 1957.
These are the stories that need to be told, the stories that need to be heard, and the stories we can all learn from.
Pamela also shares her passion for curating discovered family art through photographs and one of a kind heirloom quilts.

Another crushing step backwards. This is our view of the recent SCOTUS decision to strike down affirmative action in university admissions (except military schools, cunningly).
Plans were in place for a different episode this week but we were so intensely troubled by this breaking news, we decided to lend our voice and experiences to the chorus of outrage. It seems that America is destined to find opportunities to move further away from its promise.
Connecting the imposition of Jim Crow Laws upon Black people after they had been given a glimpse of self-determination during Reconstruction to the chipping away of meager opportunities for equity since the Civil Rights Act of 1964. We reflect on white affirmative action being the law of the land for over 300 years, and again now, with this ruling.
Our Blackness is a source of pride and resilience, despite experiences where it is acknowledged with suspicion (Angella at Penn) or made invisible by color-blinded ignorance (Leslie at the hospital). We get into our feelings, our history and our hopes in this compelling and unapologetic conversation.

Angella and Leslie have returned from their reboot week vacation. The gloves come off in this “tell-all” episode: what worked and what came up short of their expectations - or should we say “who” came up short? Were the besties able to stay out of the big box stores? Did the accountability partners stay true to their missions? And what was that very thing that, much to Angella’s consternation, Leslie decided just had to come home with them?

Season 3 starts with a revelatory conversation that challenges the "acceptable" ways that people form partnerships. Over the years, The Besties have often joked about the prospect of getting married, as platonic friends of course. But would we all benefit from more expansive ways of finding compatible life partners? Yes, indeed.

“I don’t have a problem with a hairstyle unless that hairstyle has a problem with you”. Sounds simple enough when coming from an expert like Brooklyn, NY based Board Certified Dermatologist Dr. Achiamah Osei-Tutu. For the rest of us we just spend time, money and energy trying to get our tresses to cooperate. In this episode, besties Angella and Leslie get to the ‘root’ of the types and causes of hair loss, discuss how hair may manifest systemic disease and describe the ways in which culture influences hair health.

Did you know that 13 people die every day while waiting for a life-saving kidney transplant and that someone with end stage renal disease is added to a transplant list every 14 minutes? Prepare yourself for a poignant episode of where Leslie describes her family’s personal navigation through the organ transplant process when her 20 year old son developed renal failure. As a parent, she learned invaluable lessons about the mental health journey her son had to process through, not only the tangible physical ones. As a compassionate human being, she discovered that the general public is largely unaware of how they can be of help to these patients. The Besties hope that this episode will not only be educational and enlightening, but will also serve as a clarion call to consider becoming an organ donor.

If you’ve tuned in to prior episodes, you already know that although Angella and Leslie have been best friends for over four decades, they actually approach concepts, solutions and questions, it turns out, quite differently. In this episode the ladies put their differences on display by answering a series of heady questions. The answers are often funny, at times poignant but they mostly reveal how a left brained person can fill in the puzzle piece of her right brained bestie, and vice versa.

During a roller coaster work situation, Angella felt increasing discontent about giving a select few decision-making power over her livelihood. So she took a leap of faith into entrepreneurship. Big pivots are inherently risky but sometimes when you know, you just know. Listen to her story about the empowerment she felt in leaving a 30 year corporate IT career. After nearly 20 years at one of the world's top tech companies she has become founder and CEO of HeadSpace NC, a beauty and advocacy company.

**It’s Thanksgiving! And one of the things Angella and Leslie are thankful for is that they are hosting side by side (in a closet) again for the first time since their podcast launched. They also give thanks for the love and health of their friends and families and you, their podcast listeners. With that in mind the ladies recount some of the comments and reviews they’ve received and brag about the over 600 downloads Black Boomer Besties from Brooklyn has garnered in less than a month after it’s inception.

A mass shooting occurred on a bus carrying students from the University of Virginia where three students were killed and 2 others injured. This hit Angella, in particular very hard- thus this episode discusses this event, some of the wider implications and more importantly is dedicated to the 3 deceased students Devon Chandler, D’Sean Perry and Lavel Davis, Jr.
Why would it take two Jesus-adoring people more than a decade to get through one collective reading of the Bible? In their usual humorous way Angella and Leslie discuss the origins of their faith traditions in Jamaica and Brooklyn, their unconventional Bible study dynamics and how Saturday mornings became a time of connection, contemplation and sometimes conflict.
Notes:
You ever just feel a little blah and figure a little pep talk with your pal will help? Leslie tried that and was shocked by Angella’s response. In this episode they take what begins as a private conversation to the airwaves as they do what they do best - trust each other’s wisdom for support during life’s ebbs and flows.

Pivoting - in our careers, where we live, and such - is something many of us have had to do during the pandemic. In this episode, we share how we developed our pivot power way before 2020: Leslie’s circuitous path to medical school at the age of 35 and Angella’s move far from all that was familiar, with her 3 young children (and a pet snail) in tow.
So, we’re actually doing this: letting the world into our deeply rooted friendship: a safe and sharpening space from which we’ve weathered many storms for over 45 years.
In this premier episode we tell you where the “we” began; why we feel compelled to lean into our fears; and the ways our differences (not only what we have in common) continues to strengthen our bond since meeting as 14 yr olds at Brooklyn Tech High School.
Episode Highlights
13:26: ‘But can she sew’: What that means
05:18: We are two clumsy chicks
06:16: Our vastly different upbringings
17:23: The left-brain and right-brain bond
This is what the world needs now: two free-thinking “seasoned” Black women speaking their truth.
**Shaped by 45 years of friendship that began at the prestigious Brooklyn Technical High School through the Ivy League, medical school, marriages, divorces, triumphs, parenting queer children, life-threatening illness, and many many amazing adventures.
Each week, besties Leslie Osei-Tutu and Angella Fraser will push against boundaries in love, culture, careers, faith, politics, and outdated assumptions about women of a certain age. Remember, you’re never too old to change your mind…or your hair! (but more on that later :-)**
