Self-care is a term that’s been trending everywhere from the early stages of social media, but what does it truly mean? Beyond the aesthetically pleasing Instagram posts of bubble baths and scented candles lies the psychology explored in this episode of Self-Improvement Atlas.

Joining our host Marie Stella is clinical health psychologist Dr. Samantha McLeod, who’s been running her own wellbeing center since 2009, which aims to help others live with vitality as their potential becomes reality, through individual and group-based programs.

In this episode, Dr. Samantha McLeod shares the benefits of self-care and how to implement genuine self-care instead of simply following the trends. While self-care is often seen as a buzzword, looking after oneself properly is a must for improving one’s mental health.

Together, Marie and Dr. Samantha McLeod discuss how people can center self-care, instead of viewing it as just another item on the to-do list, and one that often gets ignored. They share practices that people can implement in their day to day lives to ensure self care is prioritized despite a busy work schedule.
Whether you're seeking to re-center self-care in your life, or to simply learn about its many benefits, tune in to this episode today!

Emotions can often affect our demeanor, and even our health. So, this week on Self-Improvement Atlas: The Personal Science Insights Podcast, host Marie Stella is joined by psychology professor Benjamin D. Rosenberg, Ph.D. to explore the world of emotions, and about how they affect us and we affect them.

An associate professor and department co-chair at the psychology department at Dominican University of California, Benjamin D. Rosenberg, Ph.D. is a social-health psychologist with expertise in health behavior, research methods and statistics, and survey design. But most of all, he is a passionate instructor and mentor; collaborating with students on research is one of his favorite parts of being a professor.

In this episode, Benjamin D. Rosenberg, Ph.D. shares that emotions serve three main purposes: to help us figure out how to manage major life events, to function as a motivator for our behavior, and to serve as a barometer for how we’re adapting to our environment. On top of that, he reveals that emotions are generally categorized by four quadrants, from low to high arousal, and positive to negative.

Together, Marie and Benjamin D. Rosenberg, Ph.D. discuss the age-old debate of emotions being innate versus learned, and further examine the all-too-common pursuit of happiness and its missteps. So, tune in to this episode for an in-depth look into the world of emotions.

You often hear about volunteering as a selfless act, but what if, in the best of ways, it can be entirely selfish? This week on Self-Improvement Atlas: The Personal Science Insights Podcast, host Marie Stella chats with preventative medicine professor Stephen G. Post, Ph.D. on how doing good makes you feel good.

An opinion leader and public speaker, Stephen G. Post, Ph.D. is author to an estimated 300 articles in leading medical journals by the likes of JAMA, NEJM, Annals of Internal Medicine, and more. In this episode, Stephen G. Post, Ph.D. asserts that volunteering helps to instill self-control, mindfulness, and open-mindedness in volunteers. He elaborates that the benefits one receives from volunteering are derived less from the number of hours one commits to, but the amount of kindness put into the act.

Virtual environments and digital interactions are becoming increasingly central to our lives, and with that, comes a host of questions: Do online communities influence our identity? To what extent? So, this week on Self-Improvement Atlas: The Personal Science Insights Podcast, host Marie Stella Quek is joined by Dr. Vanessa Dennen to learn more about online communities and its effect on our self-identity

As professor of Instructional Systems & Learning Technologies at Florida State University, Dr. Vanessa Dennen’s research investigates the cognitive, motivational, and social elements of computer-mediated communication. Specifically, she concentrates on three major issues: learner engagement in online discussion activities, identity development, knowledge management and knowledge brokering within online networks and communities of practice, as well as ethical issues related to computer-mediated learning.

In this episode, Dr. Vanessa Dennen reveals that there are two types of engagement—passive and active—that equally contribute to both an individual’s identity development and online communities. That aside, she cites search engines like Google, and social media platforms like Facebook, as decent entry points for locating niche forums with strong communities.

Together, Marie Stella Quek and Dr. Vanessa Dennen address the common misconception that online communities are merely echo chambers that spiral into negativity, as well as risks associated with forming identities through virtual spaces.

So, tune in to this episode for a thought-provoking discussion about what you can do for an online community and more importantly, what an online community can do for you.

Have you ever felt yourself dissociating from being the shoulder to cry on for the hundredth time? The weight of others’ emotions can sometimes turn empathy into vicarious exhaustion. So, this week on Self-Improvement Atlas: The Personal Science Insights Podcast, host Marie Stella chats with clinical psychologist Shannon Swales to learn about compassion fatigue.

Meditation is taking the world by storm, with information available on social media outlets and blogs alike. But, understanding the fundamentals of meditation and what types might be suited for your goals and lifestyle is key to making it work. So, this week on Self-Improvement Atlas: The Personal Science Insights Podcast, host Marie Stella is joined by meditation teacher Giovanni Dienstmann for beginner-friendly meditation advice.

Having practiced meditation since 14 years old, Giovanni Dienstmann recognized a gap in the industry when it started gaining popularity 10 years ago. As a meditation teacher, Giovanni Dienstmann adopts an approach that heavily considers a client’s goals, which most online classes overlook. Outside of the meditation classroom, he runs one of the most-visited meditation blogs on the web, and has authored Amazon best-seller Practical Meditation, which has been affectionately dubbed by readers as ‘the meditation bible.

In this episode, Giovanni Dienstmann breaks down the basic principles of meditation, elaborating that, depending on style, meditation is ideally unsupported, with some extent of physical stillness. For beginners, he recommends practicing a meditation warmup, where—similar to warmups prior to sports or physical activity—two to three minutes are spent calming the brain down and centering the mind.

Together, Marie and Giovanni Dienstmann discuss the various meditation practices and what they are most suited for, along with factors to consider when choosing a meditation practice. That aside, Giovanni Dienstmann offers his recommendations on resources that provide a more extensive meditation experience beyond the basics.

So, whether you’re a curious novice or earnestly seeking to deepen your knowledge and meditation abilities, tune in to this episode for an abundance of expert advice!

Trauma tends to leave deep scars on the psyche and spirit, yet there exists a path to healing, especially when accompanied by meditation. So, in this week’s episode of Self-Improvement Atlas: The Personal Science Insights Podcast, host Marie Stella is joined by professor Dessa Bergen-Cico, Ph.D.

As a professor in the Department of Public Health, as well as faculty in the Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Program at Syracuse University, Dessa Bergen-Cico, Ph.D. possesses extensive knowledge on trauma. But beyond the lecture halls, she is a Certified Addiction Specialist (CAS), Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) and a Certified Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Teacher.

In the episode, Dessa Bergen-Cico, Ph.D. first outlines trauma recovery, listing hypervigilance, ruminants, and explosive rage, as common experiences that meditation can help to alleviate. To add, she asserts that those who might not necessarily have information on the trauma at the front of their minds might find meditation more effective as compared to talk therapy.

Together, Marie and Dessa Bergen-Cico, Ph.D. walk through the journey of recovery with mindfulness-based meditation, discussing the three key practices used: sitting, gentle stretching, and body scanning.

So, for an eye-opening conversation about the role of meditation in trauma recovery, tune in to this enlightening episode!

Often laden with cultural taboos and societal pressures, divorce—especially within communities of color—is often shrouded in silence and stigma. So, in this week’s episode of Self-Improvement Atlas: The Personal Science Insights Podcast, host Marie Stella is joined by divorce and relationship confidence coach Monica Kalra to deconstruct divorce within cultural contexts.

The founder of Revorce, a term coined by Monica to mean ‘to revive, reclaim, and reset before and after divorce’, Monica was inspired by her own story of re-harnessing her personal power, exiting an abusive relationship, and reconstructing her own confidence and life. Now, she coaches women to rise from the ashes of victimhood, and guides them through cultural stigmas. That aside, she has authored two insightful books, ‘How Do You Know He’s The One?’ and ‘How To Heal From A Toxic Relationship’.

In this episode, Monica breaks down the various stages of going through a divorce, and shares poignant anecdotes from her own experience that was accompanied by the distress from disapproval of family and friends. She then offers advice on overcoming divorce, especially when contending against cultural expectations.

Together, Marie and Monica share candid conversations and personal reflections that shed light on the stigma of divorce across cultures. So, tune in for an engaging discussion that encompasses divorce and its intersection with tradition, religion, and identity.

But in recent years, ‘intuitive eating’ has been making waves. So, this week on Self-Improvement Atlas: The Personal Science Insights Podcast, host Marie Stella is joined by a psychologist, Dr. Gia Marson, to learn more about the anti-diet approach.

But even more impressively, Gia has served as the founding director of the UCLA Counseling and Psychological Services Eating Disorders Program.

In this episode, Dr. Gia first starts by outlining the core principles of intuitive eating, as well as the main purpose of the anti-diet approach. She surmises that intuitive eating is beneficial particularly to those who struggle with low self-perception, and offers advice on applying these principles to everyday life. Together, Marie and Dr. Gia discuss the challenges to be wary of when attempting to practice intuitive eating, along with common misconceptions about the anti-diet approach.

People say it’s too early to start retirement planning before 50, so when is exactly the right time to start retirement planning? Can we start doing it at least when we are 25 years old? What types of financial products should we consider when it comes to retirement planning?

In this episode of Self-improvement Atlas: The Personal Science Insights Podcast host, Aditi Kutty, sits down with Daniel Thompson – Partner and Financial Adviser at Finnacle, Australia. Having grown up and lived in different parts of Australia, from the outback to the city, he found one thing that was common to many: financial problems. Therefore, he with supportive people around him built Finnacle to do exactly that. He is also the dad of an energetic young daughter and a huge Essendon Bombers fan.

Life can be complex, while at the same time there have never been as many opportunities as we have now. Our aim is to help people simplify their money so they can focus on what they do best and what really matters to them.

What do leadership integrity and capability look like? Is it someone who can lead a team professionally? What skills are needed for someone to be capable of leading a team?

In this episode of Self-improvement Atlas: The Personal Science Insights Podcast host, Aditi Kutty, sits down with Prof. Tony L. Simons—a Louis B. Schaeneman Jr. Professor of Innovation & Dynamic Management, who teaches organizational behavior, negotiation, and leadership at the Cornell School of Hotel Administration.

His research examines trust and credibility as relational, individual, and collective qualities. Simons' research has focused on how well people are seen as keeping their word–delivering on their promises and living espoused values. This simple perception has huge practical consequences and is challenging to maintain impeccably. His research and consulting work supports managers in meeting this challenge. He speaks, trains, consults, and designs surveys for organizations both within and beyond the hospitality industry.

Aditi and Prof. Tony discuss the definition of leadership, how leadership integrity and capability affect our personal development and vice versa, and what integrity and capability look like in leadership. Prof. Tony also shares best practices for becoming a better leader.

Aging has been described as the primary risk factor for neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s diseases, Parkinson’s diseases, and dementia. How does aging affect our personal life and development? What should we do to prevent aging brain and memory loss moving forward?

In this episode of Self-improvement Atlas: The Personal Science Insights Podcast host, Aditi Kutty, sits down with Dr. Jonathan Schooler, a Distinguished Professor of Psychological and Brain Sciences at the University of California Santa Barbara.

His research on human cognition explores topics that intersect philosophy and psychology, such as how fluctuations in people’s awareness of their experience mediate mind-wandering and how exposing individuals to philosophical positions alters their behavior.  He is also interested in the science of science (meta-science) including understanding why effect sizes often decline over time, and how greater transparency in scientific reporting might address this issue.

Aditi and Dr. Schooler discuss the definition of aging brain, how it relates to memory loss and impact on our personal life, and different kinds of memory. Dr. Schooler also shares his favorite book, The Book on the Taboo Against Knowing Who You Are, from Alan Watts.

It’s common knowledge that physical exercise can lead to a better, healthier brain. It has the power to reduce depression and anxiety, prevent dementia, and Alzheimer’s, and a good group fitness regimen can enhance our sense of community. But what are the best exercises for our mental health? How often should we exercise, and when?

Ryan Marinelli has worked in health and fitness settings for eight years. During that time, he completed a Bachelor of Exercise Science, and a Master of Clinical exercise science (Honours). He has taken a great interest in the role various types of exercise have on clinical mental health conditions and the powerful effect exercise can have on the mind and body. He aspires to complete a PhD from 2023 onwards and increase the knowledge and awareness of the effects of improving health related behaviours on the mind and body connection.

In this episode of Self-improvement Atlas: The Personal Science Insights Podcast, host Aditi Kutty sits down with Ryan to discuss how important it is to be consistent with exercise, types of exercises that are good for mental health, and how we need to find exercises we enjoy so that we can stick to it for a long time. A lot of us don't spend enough time on our emotions as adults, let alone as toddlers. But our emotional development can be affected by how we interacted with the world, and how it interacts with us, at a very early age. A lack of self-awareness often leads to bigger problems with mental health and addiction. So how far back do we have to go to understand ourselves?

On this episode of Self-improvement Atlas: The Personal Science Insights Podcast, host Aditi Kutty is joined by Lavinia Popescu Nau, or Lavinia, a psychologist, specializing in positive psychology and emotional intelligence. She is a positive-minded psychologist with a strong commitment to taking and communicating decisions with confidence and credibility. She is known for developing therapy programs and modalities for restoring or improving severe mental health disorders using a positive attitude and reinforcements. She's worked in mental health around the world, including in Spain and the United Kingdom, and she did her dissertation in Romania. She is currently a Resident Advisor in the Mental and Behavioural Health unit at Franciscan Health, Dyer, Indiana, United States. Lavinia took a Master’s Degree at Lewis College of Letters and Science at Illinois Institute of Technology to expand her knowledge in Mental Health and to achieve her goal of making a positive impact in our society. She carries numerous certifications and training including Identifying Early Signs of Psychosis in Adolescents and Young Adults from Stanford University and Psychological First Aid from John Hopkins University. Her specialties lie in bringing up emotions and mental health management.

Lavinia chats with Aditi on how important it is to be more emotionally aware, and how to encourage our children to be the same through movies, board games and the ways we interact with them based on our relationships with them. They also discuss practicing gratitude and yoga and how they benefit our emotional development.

We're starting to become more and more aware how important it is to set boundaries in various parts of our lives. But how do we set appropriate boundaries with those closest to us? And how does it affect our personal development?

On this episode of Self-improvement Atlas: The Personal Science Insights Podcast, host Aditi Kutty is joined by Jacqui Senn, a licensed mental health counselor, and a motivational speaker, and they chat about what constitutes a boundary, how setting boundaries can help keep us safe, and how we need to constantly evaluate them and our needs to make sure they continue to keep us safe.

In addition to being a licensed counselor, Jacqui is also a group therapist for young children and adolescents, also has worked a lot on relationships and boundaries. She discovered her passion for this work by sharing some of her life experiences with others. She soon realized that through her writing, speaking, and group work, people were experiencing transformations in their self-confidence and changed reactions when obstacles presented themselves in their lives. She continues this work today and has expanded her services to include individual therapy. She graduated in 2019 from Cambridge College with a Masters in Mental Health Counselling and she is a licensed LMHC in the state of Massachusetts.
