My take: this is a must-listen reality check for pro, businesses, and brands who care about the industry.

My first recording of the new year is about looking forward - and sharing my thoughts on where technology could be taking our industry. I also check in with Chat GPT to get an AI 'perspective' on where robotics (and related technologies) could take salons and professionals over the next 20 years. Importantly, our larger world of consumers does not have a great history of considering the needs of the workforce that serves it (across industries) as a reason NOT to change the role of said workforce. Think about it...

Taking a break from the usual to talk about a topic few of us know enough about - Civics. Per my office buddy Chat GPT, "Civics is all about understanding how government works, how people participate, and how decisions (laws and more) get made". Knowing the basics is valuable in understanding the state of the beauty industry's regulatory landscape... as well as everyday life. Note: this is not a political episode. I stayed way clear of that. Hope you enjoy. :-)

Regular listeners know that I'm obsessed with Artificial Intelligence (due to its potential to revolutionize the pro beauty industry....across categories). Having said this, I'm very much aware of the potential for AI to create challenges for both the industry and our larger world. Listen in for my take on the not-so-great side of this insanely powerful technology.
I love to talk tech + beauty -in large measure because of the amazing efficiencies the right tech can bring to salons and pros. But what we don't talk about enough are the potential downsides to tech - and top of that list for me are the distractions from our work being caused across the industry by the misuse of social media AND our devices while 'on the job'. Listen in for my take on what I believe is one of the industry's most significant challenges in building success.
E-commerce continues evolving across America, but here's the reality: most retail still happens in physical stores, and that's not changing dramatically anytime soon. For salons, this is great news. However, there's a huge opportunity we're missing. Today we'll add to the conversation how smart integration of digital and physical experiences can transform your salon business, better serve your clients, and capture revenue you're currently leaving on the table.
In this special episode, I break down the latest developments from Congress on tipping and taxes. Both the Senate and House have introduced bills aiming to provide income tax relief for tipped workers—but with key differences including in what’s proposed, who qualifies, what it means for employees, employers, and independents, and the potential impact on your bottom line. A must listen to episode for any and all in the pro beauty space.
Getting this podcast back more solidly focused on tech - starting with an update this week on what I see going on around - and within - the industry. Looking forward to adding some of the industry's most important leaders in tech to these conversations. Listen in...and stay tuned! :-)
Words are so powerful! They can inform, inspire, and/or elevate- or they can confuse, crush and/or diminish. In this episode, I share context around the powerful 'labels' we attach to most individuals who work behind the chair, in classrooms, or on stages. Today we often refer to all who are licensed as Artists and Professionals; and all who are self-employed as Entrepreneurs. Listen in for my take on all of this and more.

A quick episode offering some context on the uncertain times we find ourselves in. Reading the consumer press, it's hard not to be concerned about the direction of our larger US economy. And although we are not (yet) officially in a recession, being aware so that we can best react (proactively, ideally) and plan is the best place for most of us to start.
Listen to Part Two of my conversation with NAHA award-winning educator and our industry's most prominent social activist Keya Neal. We've all been through a lot in recent years, including witnessing the gutting of D.E.I. initiatives across the USA. What might it mean for pro beauty - and what's next (Part 2)?
Today perhaps more than ever, there is tension by many (inside of the industry) between the ideas of artistry and service. Most concerning is what seems to be the opinion of many that these are mutually exclusive ideas - that we cannot be artists as well as 'service providers'. On that point, I've never heard a consumer call us with either of these terms. Both to me are inside the industry terms - as the public tends to call us their 'hairdressers, stylists and/or barbers'. A short rant on some big and important ideas around these industry conversations.

Award-winning educator and social activist Keya Neal joins Gordon to share her backstory before we dive into a serious conversation around race, texture, and the professional salon industry. We've all been through a lot in recent years, including witnessing the recent gutting of D.E.I. initiatives across the USA. What might it mean for pro beauty - and what's next? Listen in to Part 1 of our 2-episode series with Keya. Watch for Part 2 to release on 4/23/2025.

According to Chat GPT, Economics is "the study of how people use resources and make decisions about money. It looks at how goods and services are produced, distributed, and consumed, and it helps us understand how individuals, businesses, and governments manage their finances and resources to meet their needs and wants." It's as much as 'art' as it is a science - and is the topic of today's episode!

The pro salon industry talks a LOT about the "6 figure hairdresser" but rarely with clarity about what it takes to get there. In today's episode, I share my lessons learned from Antony Whitaker's Grow My Salon Business podcast (Episode 267). Antony interviews guest Maxwell Snow, a color specialist at Atlanta's Van Michael Salon who is among the top-earning hairdressers working behind the chair in the USA. I share my notes from this inspired conversation digging into the practices and beliefs that have led to Maxwell's tremendous success (one that does NOT include a social media following). Be sure to listen to Antony's conversation with Maxwell on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or YouTube (search for Grown My Salon Business podcast).

Tatum Neill's Elevate Hair is turning 10 this year - and true to its name, the popular event has helped to ELEVATE the careers of more than a few up-and-coming Artists. The artist, technical, business & social media educator, corporate executive & DJ is also a member of the industry's iconic Neill family. Following his recent surprise 'appearance' on the leading tech podcast in America(Pivot), I just had to have Tatum on for a chat (inspiring me to add some interesting future guests back into my rotation!).

In this episode, I tackle several topics including the Pre-Booking/Re-Booking "controversy", an update on rising inflation and tariffs and how to consider relative to your business, the continuing trend of falling retail sales in salons, and our perceptions around shifting consumer behaviors. On the AI front, I used ChatGPT to get feedback around that last point and share it verbatim to help show the power of these platforms.
Over the last 10 years, Suites have arguably been the #1 disruptor of the professional salon industry. The tremendous growth in suites has led to hiring and retention problems for traditional salons, revenue challenges for brands, business model challenges for distributors, and educational challenges for schools.
Listen in for my take on what the real 'trouble' with Suites is, my projections for continued growth - and, with a little help from AI-, the pros and cons of going into the Suite life.

The fast pace of innovations in Artificial intelligence is like nothing we've ever seen - including the release last week of the exponentially powerful Deep Research functions that Open AI, Perpleixity, and Google's Gemini have all just launched. This week I give my take on the power of this innovation to go deep into 'the weeds' of our industry to provide meaningful insights into the true inner workings of the pro beauty industry.
Although there is much uncertainty around the plan to put tariffs on Mexico, Canada, China and the E.U., the ongoing threat makes this a topic perhaps worthy of some conversation. Big picture, tariff's almost always add inflationary pressures (for starters). Given our industry's struggles with pricing and price increases-and the large amount of products, tools and furnishings being imported, some context may be helpful to some. Listen in for my take on the possible impact of tariffs - and how to think of about them should they end up happening.
My quick tour around the various digital and social platform categories and tools with my added take on how to consider each in building your career and/or business. My most important 'aha' relative to this topic: social media is not only 'old' but it is also very much overhyped in terms of results across the industry. As a long-time 'evangelist' for these platforms relative, I'm here to say that we should all take a big step back to consider our effort vs ROI around all things social media and our careers.
My first recording of the new year is about looking forward - and sharing my thoughts on where technology could be taking our industry. Add to that a new website that seems suspiciously connected to all of the 'destruction' and I'm back down the proverbial rabbit hole of concern. The last time i hope to talk about these folks for a while.

Today's episode description: "Change" is more often than not a good thing - and is essential for any business to thrive in the long term. Having said this, with change comes risk - perhaps today more than ever given the amount of industry-related misinformation being spread far and wide by too many. In this episode, I dig into the 'methodology' of one coaching group (per a recent IG post), offer my take on the thinking behind some of these ideas, and more. Buckle up and listen in!
I am wrapping up 2024 with a quick rant on the continuing flow of misinformation hijacking too many businesses and careers - for all the wrong reasons. I end with some thoughts about the coming year. Wishing all a wonderful holiday season and a great start to the new year just around the corner!
As a follow-up to a recent episode featuring Debra Neill (Neill Education and Serious Business conference) and our talk about the big picture of where events may be headed, this week I dig deep into the power of conferences - and what makes great ones stand out. In my opinion, the conference space is where we have the biggest opportunity to create added value to our larger industry. Listen in for more.
I've been thinking a lot about this year and the pro beauty industry and what it all might means for the longer term - which led me to look instead at what's ahead in the next few years for salons and pros- across business models, best practices, and more. Thanks to all who make time to listen regularly, it means the world to me. Wishing all a great holiday season and a most amazing 2025!
My quick update on the continuing challenge of bad coaching (fueled by misinformation and clickbait). Sadly, careers and salons continue to be DESTROYED by an effort to somehow "salon differently" under the 'guidance' of those selling programs and services to do what these coaches have never done - owned or managed commissioned salons.
The evolution of events (of all kinds) is an important topic given their significant role in our industry. Debra Neill is CEO of Neill, an iconic, educationally focused family-owned organization. Not your traditional chief executive officer, Debra is known as Chief Energy Officer, a fitting title given her genuine passion and positive energy around our industry and its future. Check out Neill's iconic Serious Business conference (1/11-12, New Orleans) at seriousbusiness.net.

My quick take on the "work less to make more" conversation I see going on across the industry - too often without the proper context from which individuals can make the best decision for their unique life and career circumstances. This may be a bit contrarian for some but it's just my honest take - shared hoping to offer more context for those looking for solutions.
Although we are very passionate as an industry about the need to understand the foundational rules of the craft, business & career best practices -which often fall into the grey areas of knowledge- are too often deemed 'right or wrong'. The key to navigating the grays of our industry? Knowledge and experience along with great role models and mentors -all of which are growingly in short supply. Here's my take on this topic along with a warning on 1099ing!
In thinking about the future of our industry and how best to tap into the many and varied opportunities around us all, these are 3 of my favorite words. In this episode, I do a riff of sorts explaining why and what I think they mean for us today...and how changing the way we look at them just might create even more opportunities tomorrow!
Recorded on my way to Intercoiffure North America's Fall Atelier (to do a presentation on AI) this episode digs into some new 'aha's' -as well as a deep dive into what it might all mean for professionals and owners. I truly believe that AI will be revolutionary for how we think about the business of beauty - across categories. Related to this, I belive AI matters to salons in the same way that apps matter to Independents -and could be gamechanging in time.

In this episode, Part 2 of a talk that began with Mindset, @TabathaCoffey digs into the meaning and importance of Mindfulness as a follow-up and a bit of a contrast to Part 1. One of the most iconic names in all of pro beauty, Tabatha is a self-described "Truth Teller, Dream Chaser, And Coach For Women Just Like You". For more about Tabatha, follow her on IG or visit www.tabathcoffey.com
A quick episode on some big topics: the ongoing move to part-time work (driven, in part, to misconceptions about the too often romanticized "Gig Economy"), our troubles with pricing and inflation, and thoughts on the importance and power of great customer service. All this and a bit more in just over 20 minutes. Podcast hack: speed up the player on your favorite podcast platform to save time while listening.
My short take on what i view as the realities around where we've come from, where we are today, and where we just might be headed as an industry - with added context to help make sense of it all (or so I hope!). Giving the negative coaching rants a rest this week- and planning on (hoping for) no bad coach-related episodes in September!
Following another DTH podcast sharing MORE bad advice(on how to leave a salon as an employee), I'm inspired to react to it - and a lot more. I've dug deep into DTH to try and figure out why they think the way they do - and I may have found the answer! If you are following my talks on the dangers of bad coaches, don't miss this one.

I've been talking about the challenges faced by hairdressers and owners looking for competent coaches for 3+ years. Many have been surprised that I've yet to be blocked by one coaching group in particular -and it's finally happened. Silly coaches. I've got 3 accounts following them - just in case this was to happen. This week I dig further into proof points around the lack of coaching competencies and my ongoing fear around the destruction of careers and businesses being quietly done across the industry (as bad information from all kinds of sources sure does travel fast these days thanks to social media).
If time truly is money in our pro lives, then our 'capacity' represents the maximum amount of time that we have to generate revenue. Productivity, on the other hand, drives the reality of your financial outcomes - the difference being your potential for financial growth at this moment. The solution to closing the gaps? Finding efficiencies. This is my geeky take on a critical topic that doesn't get enough attention.
AI has been top of mind for many since late 2022 - and certainly through much of 2023 the same has been true for the press, pundits, and regular folks alike. We've watched the AI category expand from mostly Open AI-focused to now include Google's Gemini, Meta's Llama , and Anthropics Claude (owned in part by Amazon). On top of that, there are now AI Agents being developed by a small army of interested parties across categories. Some compare this to the proliferation of Apps following the i-phone launch. Listen in to my quick round-up of evolving thoughts on the category.
It's hard to believe we have just passed the midway point of 2024...but here we are! Given the ever-hastening speed of change in our world, this felt like a moment to recap where I see the industry's various 'parts and pieces' - everything from shifting business models to events, media...and more.
So much destructive coach chatter across the industry trying to diminish the value of 'service' - weirdly saying to the press: 'We are sick of being service providers and want to get back to the artistry of what we do". The implication is that 'service' is a new idea (it's not!) that takes away from the profession. My take: remove great service from the 'experience' and home haircare is sure to explode to even greater heights(and the AI robots will applaud the lapse in judgment). Listen in for my quick take on the critical need to double down on service as a point of difference separating you from the many who are quickly moving away from this long-time, proven revenue driver.
Given the rush to independent businesses by so many, this feels like great advice for anyone looking to go out on their own (as a business of one or many). This week, i talk about this as well as other relarted "random thoughts" -all connected to our changing business landscape.
I believe deeply that "knowledge is power "- and that history is a special form of knowledge that elevates us all. In that so much misinformation is floating around -including in our pro beauty space-, I asked Chat GPT to help me lay out some of the high points of the last 250+ years related to our profession -and then share my take on what some of it might mean to us today.
Apologies for remaining in the bad coaching lane but they are at it again - this time recommending salons spend $2500 on building a custome app that will, according to the duo, be more valuable than your business when you decide to one day sell. This episode (and follow-ups #77 & #78)has created much buzz about the bad side of coaching in beauty. The resulting feedback has been overwhelming - including stories of bankruptcies, walkouts, and career-crushing results said to be related to the BS being spread by a couple of coaches seemingly in search of fame and $$$. Original description: "Change" is more often than not a good thing - and is essential for any business to thrive in the long term.
In our larger world, the idea of facts vs fiction and/or truth vs opinion seems to be a very murky concept that too many are using to not only create wedges amongst us all but also as a way to confuse--and 'market' to us. In this episode, I try to add some much-needed context to this trend as well as speak to the importance of language -and some data all should consider when thinking about the word "entrepreneur". This was recorded the evening before I presented a talk on AI to Intercoiffure America Canada members at their spring conference in Montreal this week. This episode was inspired by that talk on where we may be headed as an industry relative to the evolution of Artificial Intelligence and what it might mean for salons and pros.
Apologies in advance for going down this rabbit hole but hearing the anti-retail coaches suddenly promote in-salon retail stopped me in my tracks - for about a minute. On closer listen, it became clear that this change of heart was not what it seemed. Listen in for my take on the reality of traditional vs 'private label/white label' retail models - and more.
A post-Americas Beauty Show episode (translation: I'm worn out!) talking a bit of a tech update in advance of a coming deep dive as well as some commentary on the (over) abundance of coaches in the industry plus a recap of some feedback on my Destroy the B*l ShT episode.
"Change" is more often than not a good thing - and is essential for any business to thrive in the long term.
My riff on recent social media posts by salons, pros, & coaches mistakenly calling out the 'men running the beauty industry'; my defense of brands (against the misinformed blaming them for 'everything') plus my view that signs are bubbling up that could be signaling that the suite category may be in trouble in 2025.
Iconic salon owner, educator, artist, and thought leader Sam Brocato joins Gordon to share his take on the impact of AI upon professional salons (as well as our larger industry). Sam is an early adopter of artificial intelligence who shares Gordon's belief that the technology is going to have a far-reaching impact on the business of beauty - as it will upon our larger world. To encapsulate his larger view: "AI is going to permeate every part of our lives" - Sam Brocato
The Washington Post recently ran a feature story about the rising costs to clients of salon services and the negative reactions by many - including some professionals -to what is seen as a trend. In this episode, I go through some of the key points in the article (many of which do not make me happy!) to add needed context. My take somewhat aligns with the article - which hypothesizes that salons are facing challenges related to the price increases many have implemented. The bottom line: this is becoming a hot-button issue for salons losing clients (and revenue), seemingly in reaction to their steep increases in pricing.
In a rare break from my solo chat model for this podcast, business educator and coach extraordinaire Michael Cole joins me to 'geek out' in reaction to my recent episode talking about the importance of using metrics around the big idea of production versus capacity (to produce) - and what the numbers may tell you about how your business is faring day-to-day.
A key success driver of most of the successful people I know is their good fortune to have built a strong foundation from which to grow. In prep for a recent panel i hosted for SalonCentric at the Bronner Bros show, i shared my list of 3 key elements of building upon your foundation - Passion, Perspective and Passion. Listen in for my take on this topic - as well as an updated (and quick) 'bad coaches' rant.
Google search is now 25+ years old -and, for the first time, has competition that could drive innovation in how consumers and businesses use the web and other platforms. Over time, we have adapted our presence online and across social platforms to meet ever-changing algorithms driving search and discovery. With the advent of more advanced AI, many project big changes in how we use 'search'. In this episode, I share thoughts on what it might mean for salons and professionals.
A quick take on the ever-growing need by salons and pros to stand out in a meaningful way from the competition - and how your use of tech can add value to clients as well as help separate your business from the rest in meaningful ways.
Part 3 of my look back at 2023 - and how we too often seem to be our own worst enemies coming out of the dysfunction of the pandemic era. Inflation is today's main topic - and my opinion that misinformation and misunderstandings are at the root of miscalculations by too many have kept the industry from growing in 2023.
I continue where i left off in Episode 64 - plus dig into how to think about the math of independence and setting prices. Arguably these two topics are industry-wide 'Achilles Heels'. For added context: when successful pros move to independence unprepared, their income will often fall. Multiply this times tens of thousands and the impact on the industry can be far-reaching. The same is true of price increases: if a large percentage of those controlling prices in salons choose not to keep pace with inflation, the impact on the larger industry can be significant. As an example, the larger percentage of traditional salons not keeping up with inflation in the past likely has fueled interest in independence as wages in those salons then also did not keep pace with the cost of living. Something to ponder.
2023 was a crazy year: Lots of success stories but perhaps even more failure (and mostly confusion over what it all might mean). My take relative to those who struggled: "overcorrection" of pricing, shifting of boundaries, and too many jumping unprepared into self-employment. For those who did well, the big ideas seem to align with pre-pandemic core success drivers: Great SERVICE and customer CARE....tied to a bit of hustle. Perhaps one of the most important questions any professional can ask themselves today is "Which business model is best for my career?" The answer is rarely simple - as the larger realities around the categories remain very much a mystery from a data perspective. Importantly, this episode features a mostly high-level look at the process that I suggest most follow in sorting through their aspirations and related options.
Thanks to Nashville hairdresser @mikedenton for encouraging me to begin to tackle this big topic.

Here are my Top 10 predictions relative to the pro beauty space in 2024. This week, I'm taking a shortform year-end look at AI - from the point of view of both personal and professional/business use. I dig into the AI personal assistant Pi (developed and funded by some of the biggest names in tech), and on the more pro side of life, Open AI and Chat GPT (which is continuing to add new tools almost weekly). Post Turkey Day feelings of gratitude that feel right to share (in part as an encouragement for all to reflect on what's good and meaningful in our lives). I also introduce a new feature - a weekly PSA (public service announcement)! In 2024, I'll start each episode with a 1 minute take on something good going on in the industry - before digging into the bigger week's topic. Today, I went 'long' with this new idea - as it's a big topic that I promise to be done with after this rant!
Antony and I have a faced-paced talk on money, business interruption vs the newer idea of disruption, and a reality check on financial expectations. Antony also shares his advice on how to best navigate what it takes to have a solid financial foundation from which to grow your business and/or career in a post-pandemic world. As always, this was a great conversation with @growmysalonbusiness - one of the industry’s leading thought leaders in business.

ENCORE Episode: Today, social platforms like Instagram are searchable - including by way of Google; and that is a game-changer for salons and pros. Consumers use social content to make decisions about how & where they spend. Many pros looking at employment opportunities check out salons on IG to help them decide if they should apply; & many looking to hire use IG as a first impression before interviewing. Listen in for more on what this all means. Note: For early access to future episodes, please visit www.socialbeautymakers.com and sign up for my free weekly e-newsletter.
A pre-vacation audio 'braindump' to clear my head as I head to Mexico for some chill time. I share thoughts on 'hustle culture' followed by a longer list of WTF reactions to grossly misinformed chatter. Among the misinformed chatter can be found: (most)salons are toxic; (most) brands are evil; (most)hairdressers are manual laborers. Importantly, when you hear the connected "Trust us, we know more than you. We've done more than you. Only we can save you.... from THEM and YOU". Best advice: do your homework and dig DEEP into the resumes. Things are sometimes very different from what they might seem to be.
A lot has happened as of late in the world of artificial intelligence - especially over at the groundbreaking Open AI platform & ChatGPT. I offer my take on some of the social media-based chatter 'pooh-poohing' AI's potential relevance to salons. My hope? That some will change the way they look at technology and its relationship to career/business so that tech will change for them (to paraphrase Wayne Dyer's "If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change").
My take on 'leveling out the crazy talk' that is all around us. Vetting coaches, an insurance update (nothing to look at here), the truth about getting hired (including job boards), more on bad beauty math (benchmarks), and more. Once more: "May the buyer beware!"
Just back from Premiere Columbus where I was inspired by Presley Poe, Ira Pope Sage, and Danny Amorim's (@successaddict) take on 'showing up' as professionals during the Beauty Cast Network student Power Hour - and so i'm adding my take on the topic here. I also do a riff on hairdresser insurance, hairdresser clickbait, coaches- and how we all need to do our homework around the information we are taking in. It's been amazing to observe the evolution of social media over the course of 15+ years Over time, the platforms have evolved as sources of information - today serving up a weird mix of the truth, half-truths, & and some bold lies (and seemingly everything in between). Today I'm riffing on the growing conversations being shared by certain coaches on social about how the world looks at the pro beauty space (or how some think they do) -and what it all might mean. This week, I had the honor of speaking at the annual Intercoiffure AC Fall Atelier in Chicago. Shaping Tomorrow’s Salon: The Transformative Power of Artificial Intelligence was the name of my talk -and I was thrilled to hear from so many that they were using AI in their businesses for a variety of purposes. I was even more excited to hear from many who were hesitant about AI that the presentation gave them the proverbial green light to give it a go. In this episode, I dig back into the hot topic of AI with some new insights. For early access to future episodes, please visit www.socialbeautymakers.com to sign up for my free weekly e-newsletter.
This week's episode is inspired by a recent panel discussion I was lucky enough to be a part of at Moroccanoil's recent big event: The Collective. The panel focus was on challenges and opportunities facing the industry globally - and although i was honored and loved every bit of it, i left wanting to talk more about this big topic. Thanks to my fellow panelists behindthechair.com founder Mary Rector, PBA's Leslie Perry, Moroccanoil Pro Brand Ambassador Richie Grisello -and to our host Robert Ham, VP of Global Education- for inspiring today's episode.
My take on how podcasts have changed pro beauty's educational landscape relative to business and career building -plus a great listener hack AND my own top ten list of recommended podcasts. A natural extension of the once very popular business educator old-school cassettes and CDs, podcasts offer efficiencies in learning that are too often ignored by too many. Related specifically to business-related content, my best guess is that podcast listenership around salon and spa career and business topics far exceeds the online video audience for similar content. The next in a series of updates on my newest favorite innovation: the quickly changing Artificial Intelligence landscape, what's happening in our larger world around it - and what it might all mean for the pro salon industry. My own take on AI is that it will lead to a series of ongoing innovations across categories of the industry. I see growing proof points of what may be soon coming our way in education (pro and schools), media, marketing, business management - and, in time, color formulating and client (self!) consultations. Community is a most powerful idea -one that has been too often co-opted by big platforms to 'dress up' the more appropriate adjective: 'audience'. In preparation for a recent live talk, I spent time researching, listening, and pondering. The outcome: I am more excited about the true power of real community than ever (but too often struggle to find it). Listen in for a post-event casual recording of my take on the topic. Huge thanks to @paulmitchell for inviting me to speak at Camp Paul Mitchell! It was an amazing event that brought together passionate professionals, @paulmitchellpro's brilliant team of inspired educators, artists, and leaders ...with NATURE!
We seem to be in the midst of a major softening of business across a significant percentage of salons. My take is that much of this is a consumer-driven correction related to an overreaction by many salons to advice saying"raise your prices!" - with little to no context. Inflation is very real but too many coaches are using it as clickbait to grab attention while seemingly not understanding the complexities of inflation and salon pricing strategies. I also get into what's trending with tips plus the importance of growing new revenue categories during tough times. Just me, myself, and I talking my way through the ongoing evolution of salon business trends impacting most of us in one way or another (and doing so faster than ever!). I touch on everything from the tremendous growth of misinformation to its connection to a veil of uncertainty layered over the entire industry. From there, I'll dig into the various salon niches and talk about how we need to think about each within the context of the category itself (versus others) - and do my best to tie it all to the idea of a 'life cycle' around both careers and businesses. In our larger world, the idea of facts vs fiction and/or truth vs opinion seems to be a very murky concept that too many are using to not only create wedges amongst us all but also as a way to confuse--and 'market' to us. The marketers' buzz may go mostly to TikTok + Instagram these days but every bit of data points to Facebook as remaining not only highly relevant but also highly valuable to large and small businesses alike - when used effectively. From Stories and Reels to Facebook Lives, the platform remains a juggernaut of activity...and ATTENTION. Here's my take on some key data points- plus a reminder that success for many salons and salon pros today is very much about the diversification of the client mix; and that is a very BIG idea, indeed! AI for many across most industry categories is becoming an everyday tool being used in a variety of ways. It's been amazing to observe the evolution of social media over the course of 15+ years - from the early days of Facebook as a place for friends & family connections (and FarmVille!) to a dynamic new way for pros to connect (globally!); followed by the evolution of Instagram from overly filtered photo-sharing community platform to marketing behemoth transforming careers and businesses. Over time, the platforms have also evolved as sources of information - today serving up a weird mix of the truth, half-truths, & some bold lies (and seemingly everything in between). Profits are the lifeblood of any sustainable for-profit business – as without them, no matter how great your brand’s services, products, and/or team might be, it’s all but impossible to exist over time. To that point, understanding the math behind beauty is essential. But with the advent of viral information, there is a lot of what I can only call crazy bits of business advice… being shared to the detriment of too many. Listen in for an update about me, my podcasts, AND my take once again on some really fake beauty news.
Part 3 of my 3-part series focused on the fast-evolving field of Artificial Intelligence (AI). This series is a part of my ongoing effort to offer important context as to the potential of AI to be highly relevant to salon professionals, managers, and owners. In this episode, I focus on how AI will likely influence work - across industries including the professional beauty industry. From research assistance to 'ideation partner' and educator, the potential to help us all in new ways is fascinating to consider.
Part 2 of 3 part series focused on the fast-evolving field of AI to offer important context as to its potential relevance to salon professionals, managers, and owners.

Part 1 of 2 (possibly 3!) episodes focused on the fast-evolving field of AI to offer important context as to its potential relevance to the lives of salon professionals, managers, and owners.
In this episode, I share my take on historically and culturally relevant context as well as thoughts around the many and varied 'feelings' being shared by salon pros about this controversial topic. As in the early days of Social Media, I consider myself an early adopter of AI as it relates to beauty- and, once again, am doing my best to be a cautious 'evangelist' around this groundbreaking technology (that is not going away!).

After 4 decades of industry-specific experience, I admit to having a few "pet peeves" (defined by Websters as meaning "a frequent subject of complaint"). In this episode, I talk about my challenges around (1) lack of knowledge in business fundamentals, (2) the term "artists", (3) echo chambers of information, ideas, and inspiration and how they can hold us back, (4) the opposite of imposter syndrome, and (5) generational differences. For early access to future episodes, please visit www.socialbeautymakers.com to sign up for my free weekly e-newsletter.
Apologies in advance for this rant on the danger of uninformed 'experts' actively encouraging total de-regulation of the pro-beauty industry by way of their Instagram posts. After decades of concerted efforts to promote and maintain the value of licensing, it's shocking to read posts by coaches with a big following irresponsibly sharing what I can only call 'fake beauty news'. I'm the first to say that licensing is imperfect -but let's not throw the proverbial 'baby out with the bathwater'. For more on the importance and value of licensing, I suggest www.probeauty.org as a great resource.
My solo riff on the challenges the industry faces today with workforce retention (across all categories of business models) and how beginning to talk about this topic as a larger industry could have a profound and positive impact on our perceived 'labor shortage'.
As independence rises, more are arguably at risk of leaving the industry sooner rather than later - and that has a ripple effect relative to the larger industry that is worthy of all of our attention. If you follow me on IG, you likely know I'm a huge fan of quotes for the purpose of adding context to conversations, learning, business and/or life. Here's one that helps explain why: "It is often not the words but the message behind the words that makes a quote so meaningful. Even the shortest of quotations can convey the most powerful of messages, provide meaningful perspective, and impart hard-won wisdom." - Paul Ayoub. A renowned coach, marketer, & thought leader in social/digital media, Nina Kovner, Passion Squared CEO, gives us a 15-minute master class on the fundamentals of 'brand' & 'branding' -two words too often used interchangeably... in error.
Today perhaps more than ever before, the essence of who we are & how we show up (as businesses, professionals, or as humans) matters to those we connect with day-to-day. And just as education matters in your craft, so does it matter in raising the bar on your marketing game. Bringing back another HOT TOPIC that resulted in a LOT of great feedback: Few topics 'trigger' the collective industry more than public conversations (i.e. posts) about the government's suggestion that the mean annual income of hairdressers in the USA is $28,000+. We've been having versions of this conversation for at least 30 years - and yet have done little real work to set the record straight (and that's our 'bad'!). Perhaps the biggest challenge: new professionals have little in terms of actual data (and related practices) to serve as guideposts to grow (and plan) their careers and lives (putting too many at risk). Warning: triggers ahead! For early access to future episodes, please visit www.socialbeautymakers.com and sign up for the free weekly e-newsletter.

Bring this one back as it’s probably my most talked about and shared episode to date! Note: the title is a play off a podcast titled “F**K Retail” that left me angst-filled. In response, this is my "rant" on the larger idea of 'fake beauty news' - something that feels like a mirror image of disinformation in the larger world (that most on all sides of politics agree exists). Rebuttal of an anti in-salon retail argument is my primary focus - as most of those arguments are based on reasons that don't align with our larger reality (i.e. facts!). Although it is estimated that just 20% generate 80% of the $3+ billion in annual retail sales thru salons, there is clearly an opportunity to win for those who are up for learning the business side of salon retail. A solo riff to reinforce my take on the never-ending challenge facing our larger industry: the lack of early career-focused education to help new professionals make it through the early years in the salon. Perhaps most importantly, everyone should realize that this larger challenge impacts us all in varied and significant ways. Today's topic is very much connected to and inspired by episodes #15 (Image and the Ongoing Labor Shortage), #21 (The Truth About Pro Compensation), and #26 (Our Shared Responsibility to Next-Gen Professionals). After receiving numerous requests to delve deeper into the state of social media (following Episode 25), today's discussion will be an extemporaneous riff on just that. Many of us have been active on social media for well over 15 years now, and it's clear that we're entering a new era in how we approach the various platforms. It's important today to consider changes in how we measure the results of our efforts, including time and money spent. Additionally, we need to connect the dots between social media and the fundamental principles of the salon business that should guide all of our plans.
One of our most downloaded episodes to date is #19, Part 4/5 of a 5-part series on the ongoing evolution of the pro salon industry. In this episode, I share observations on both the history (the abridged version for some context) and the current state of our distributor (including stores) and pro-brand segments; and ask what I hope are thought-provoking questions related to the future of each.
Past episodes in this Future View series (#'s 6, 8 & 10) offer my take on the state of the media, events & online learning categories- and where each might be headed in the future. I hope you will check them out!
Iconic educator and platform artist Tippi Shorter Rank left day-to-day life in the salon over 15 years ago - but recently found herself thinking "something was missing" from her professional life. Not long after, the @mizani Global Artistic Director got to work creating the Hair Love Salon KC (in Kansas City, Missouri). In the process, the one-time NYC-based salon owner re-thought traditional business models in a profound way. Centered around the big idea of mentoring, Tippi has leaned into the value of building the careers of her team as THE fundamental core value of the salon. A great story along with some great advice!
Our 2nd most listened-to episode is back. Considered one of the most iconic names in the pro beauty space, @TabathaCoffey has long been pushing the salon industry to be the very best version of ourselves. The self-described "Truth Teller, Dream Chaser, And Coach For Women Just Like You" has inspired countless professionals to reach for their dream careers and businesses. In this episode, Tabatha shares her take on the power of our "attention and intention" in moving our careers and lives forward.

Social Media is getting increasingly 'wonky' as well as overhyped and misunderstood (yes, I of all people said that!); while the AI conversation is quickly evolving as the currently limited tools do the same. Marketing guru Seth Godin says that "AI is dramatically underhyped and misunderstood. It's always going to be with us. The same as we went from using our phones from 4 minutes a day to 4 hours a day, it's going to change everything." Today I share an update on what thought leaders are projecting could rock our world -in good ways-, including my take on each segment of the larger pro salon industry. The founder of the popular Successful Stylist Academy(and podcast), Ambrosia Carey is also the passionate owner of a successful 7-figure salon, an empowering business coach, well-known educator, brand ambassador, & stylist. This is an update following up on 5 past episodes, offering some added commentary and additional context on several of our many "hot topics" presented to date. Perhaps a series of mini-rants, the impetus for the episode is a combination of listener comments and recent experiences across several industry categories.

Few topics 'trigger' the collective industry more than public conversations (i.e. posts) about the government's suggestion that the mean annual income of hairdressers in the USA is $28,000+.

Adding iconic global business coach Antony Whitaker, (@growmysalonbusiness) to my typically solo midweek episode - to catch up on the quickly evolving global conversation about the pros, cons, and realities of artificial intelligence -and what it may (or may not) mean for the professional salon industry.
As the controversy settles down around this not-so-new larger form of tech, it’s time (and ‘fun’) to further imagine its possible impact on salons, pros, and our clients.

A quick take on the never-ending conversation about what many within the industry perceive as the negative image of professionals (in the mind of the larger public); as well as what Gordon views as the misunderstood state of the labor market for salons. To be more specific, he asks the question: do we have a shortage of professionals - or clients? Here to talk about pushing past the 'shackles' that hold most of us back in career and life, @DavidThurstonOfficial is known as an innovator. From Butterfly Lofts and Butterfly Circus (changing how many think about both suites and education) to becoming co-founder and now former CEO of Pulp Riot, David has been at the forefront of change for some time. His newest passion, @DangerJonesCreative, will launch its new color line on 4/1/2023 - in over 1200 stores with Cosmo Prof, Armstrong McCall & Modern Beauty! Next up: The Danger Jones Clothing line! Note: the title is a play off a podcast titled “F**K Retail” that left me angst-filled. I'm pausing my Future View series to rant on the larger idea of 'fake beauty news' - something that feels like a mirror image of disinformation in the larger world (that most on all sides of politics agree exists). A rebuttal of anti in-salon retail arguments is my primary focus - as most of those arguments are based on reasons that don't align with the larger reality. Although it is estimated that just 20% generate 80% of the $3+ billion in annual retail sales thru salons, there is clearly an opportunity to win for those who are up for learning the business side of salon retail. Tune in for more.
Throughout the pandemic, we heard a lot of talk about diversifying career interests & income - and Paula is the personification of both. The secret to much of her success? Along with her passion for learning and 'doing the work', Paula is passionate about the big idea of manifestation(defined as 'using our thoughts, feelings, and beliefs to bring something to our physical reality'). Listen in for a fast-paced conversation digging into this big idea.

A renowned coach, marketer, and thought leader in social and digital media, Nina Kovner, Passion Squared CEO, gives us a 15-minute master class on the fundamentals related to 'brand' and 'branding' -two words too often used interchangeably... in error.
Today perhaps more than ever before, the essence of who we are and we show up (as businesses, professionals, or as humans) matters to those we connect with day-to-day. And just as education matters in your craft, so does it matter in raising the bar on your marketing game. Listen in for more.

Thanks to highly publicized platforms Open AI and DALL E, AI is seriously rocking our world - and Gordon predicts it will soon be coming to a salon like yours. Artificial intelligence has long been with us - and is one reason an App like TIKTOK has become the sensation it is today. From Google Translate and face recognition to customer service chatbots and SIRI or ALEXA, AI is not so new - but it is suddenly evolving at what feels like warp speed. And although the proverbial robots will not likely be taking your place behind the chair anytime soon, Gordon predicts AI will bring game-changing innovation to salons in the next 3-5 years.
