Gymnastics coaches, discover how you can develop a team full of self-motivated, hardworking gymnasts who hit consistently so you can enjoy productive practices and confident competitions. Each week, the Gymnastics Mindset Academy coaches sit down and have a conversation with each other or other coaches to talk about gymnastics mindset training tools, techniques and tips. Week by week you will learn the concepts and tools you need to help your gymnasts overcome performance anxiety, mental blocks, fears and the things that keep them from reaching their goals and dreams.
This is the final episode of our year long Conversations with Coaches Weekly Mindset Workout series.
All month we’ve been talking about how to help your gymnast change their belief to something that will help serve them. The thought ladder is the best tool we’ve got, and we know that with practice it will be the best tool in your gymnasts tool belt as well!
In this episode, Ali and Stacie discuss how to put the thought ladder into practice to help your athlete benefit from it. Just like learning a new skill on beam, developing the ability to use the thought ladder is a process. Each progression up the ladder takes time and dedication both in and out of the gym.
We know believing something new is a skill that needs to be well conditioned. Writing out your gymnasts thought ladder and checking in with where they’re at intermittently will certainly help them develop stronger, more positive beliefs about themselves and their gymnastics.
This podcast series is not meant to be something you listen to once. Rather that you use it throughout the year to get just the help you and your gymnasts need. So go back to January 1 and keep on going next year!

We’ve spent the last couple of weeks talking about your gymnast’s current belief and also the belief she wants to have. You know, the one that’s going to actually help her to achieve her goals!? We know your gymnasts can’t just flip a switch and believe something different. Their brains need evidence that their belief can be true before they will start trusting it. In this episode, our mindset coaches talk about the most powerful tool we teach, THE THOUGHT LADDER.
The thought ladder is a strategic tool that helps your gymnasts make their way from their current belief to the new one they hope to believe. Tune in to learn all about this incredible thought strategy and how it can help your gymnast compete with confidence.

Let’s get back to neutral. When your gymnast is spiraling with negative thoughts or beliefs about themselves, it’s so important to get them back to neutral first. They can’t see the positive side of things until they’ve been able to recognize the facts of the matter.
In this episode, Ali and Stacie teach you how to help your gymnast identify what things are facts and what are her thoughts.
Thoughts are powerful things, and when gymnasts start to believe that their THOUGHTS are FACTS, they limit themselves to believing they can’t move past the thing they're stuck on.
This week, we’ll help you identify your gymnasts current beliefs and how to redirect them to positively impact your gymnasts’ lives.

This week, we’re gearing up for competition by helping you instill some strong identity-level beliefs in your gymnasts that will set them up for success this season.
We all have certain beliefs about ourselves and who we are. It’s really easy for athletes to believe their worth is contingent on their performance. They want to believe “they’ve got it”… but what will really help them is the belief that they can handle it, even when they don’t have it.
All this month, Stacie and Ali are talking about our most utilized resource, the Thought Ladder, and how it can help your gymnast go from hoping she’s got it, to believing she is capable of handling anything thrown her way. That is the true meaning of “I’ve got this.”
We would also be so grateful if you pass our podcast on to other coaches! Or simply leave a review so other coaches can get in on the mindset magic and we can help change the culture of our sport to be a place where gymnasts are healthy, happy and know how to win.

Practicing the choreography is what makes your gymnasts routine run smoothly. The more they break it down, drill it and run through it, the more comfortable they become with it. Mental choreography is just as important. Practicing the thought patterns, cue words, deep breaths and other great focus points into a routine of its own will help your gymnast become more successful in competition.
This can start from the warm-up. Each gymnast is different, so it will be up to you as the coach to figure out when each mental routine needs to start. Bars might need to start as someone is gripping up. What sort of affirmations do they focus on as they’re getting chalk? What do they tell themselves before they step onto the mat? After they salute, do they breathe, or think something in their mind? It really helps to have a cue word for each skill, transition, etc. This way, your gymnast will know exactly what to focus on to be successful, instead of wondering what will happen, or fearing making a mistake.

Do you want your gymnasts to be focused at a meet? Well, focused on their gymnastics and their technique? Then they need to use cue words that work.
Gymnasts tell us all the time that they need to just not think when they compete. But the reality is that their brain will be thinking. And left unchecked, it will usually be thinking about everything that could go wrong.
Instead we want to help prepare the brain to think specific things on purpose that will help them focus on the technique of their gymnastics. Things that will give their body exact instructions on what to do.
So for each skill, we are going to create cue words. Tune in to hear our approach to finding cue words that actually work and help your gymnast focus in a meet.

When we don’t actually believe “I’ve got this,” saying “I’ve got this” won’t actually help. If your brain doesn’t believe that you’ve, in fact, GOT THIS, it’s going to put up a fight and start throwing lots of icks your way, trying to convince you that there’s no way “you’ve got this.”
Affirmations are only helpful when the “I AM” statement is something the gymnast can actually get behind.
So how do you find the right affirmations for your gymnasts? Great question! In this episode, our master mindset coaches, dig in to how to help your gymnast find the right combination of affirmations and tie them to how they want to feel on each specific event. Sometimes, it’s not as simple as just believing you can.
You’ve gotta take a smaller step and believe that you’re capable, or believe that you’re learning how… it all leads to the same place eventually. AWESOMENESS.

Visualization is a powerful but complex tool. We tend to lean into visualization when an athlete is struggling with a skill or routine, or when they are injured and can’t physically do the skill. However, if a gymnast doesn’t actually believe they are capable of completing the routine or skill successfully, visualization can be extremely challenging. In this episode, our mindset coaches discuss how to help your athlete buy into the visualization process step by step, and breakdown the differences for our auditory, visual and kinesthetic learners to visualize in their own ways.

Light energy and good vibes tend to get left behind during the grind of the competition season. We challenged our gymnasts to set big goals for themselves that are just a bit out of reach. Now, we’re working toward those goals, and sometimes, the goals are centered more around the end of season. So how do we keep these athletes motivated when they won’t know if they achieve their goal for 7 months?
That is a very long, boring, hustle if you ask me.
In this episode Ali and Stacie talk about the importance of celebrating milestones and growth along the way to the big goal. Making the little things seem like big things can help build momentum and fuel that desire to continue chasing the ultimate goal.

In this episode, Ali and Stacie break down the scientific method. Yes… the scientific method. Its something these athletes are learning early on in school, but rarely utilize when problem solving in the real world.
What’s the problem, what are ways to fix the problem, and where we start when experimenting with fixing the problem. The idea here is to try one thing at a time, and learn from it. “If I do this, then (x) will happen.” Once our athletes are able to get a result from this first hypothesis, they can adjust and move forward. Approaching problem-solving with curiosity and a willingness to experiment removes the feeling of failure when things don’t work out the first time.
Our Gold Membership is open until Thursday only! The best gift you can give your gymnasts AND yourself to have a team full of hardworking, self-motivated, emotionally healthy gymnasts is to encourage them to get mindset training!
Gymnasts spend countless hours training their body. But every single thing your gymnast does comes from her brain. In order to get a competitive advantage and unlock their full potential, your gymnasts must also train their brain.
Gymnastics is a mentally demanding sport. And those mental demands take a toll.
Gymnastics coaches and parents make the mistake of believing that a gymnast should get all the tools she needs from just one place – her coaches.
But your job as a gymnastics coach is to train your gymnasts in the gymnastics skills they needs. On multiple events and over time, at many different levels. That is already a lot of knowledge you must have – and teach.
And even though you are doing more than many coaches by listening to this podcast and getting mental training, it is simply not possible to spend time one on one out on the gym floor every week giving your gymnast the attention they need to figure out their brain.
Your gymnasts need the tools to deal with the natural wiring of their brains so they can overcome fear and frustration and learn to calm their competition nerves.
They need the tools to deal with perfectionism and self doubt to learn how to compete calmly and confidently.
Gymnastics mindset training is the most effective way to help your gymnasts learn the mental skills they need to win in – and out – of the gym.
Your opinion means the world to your parents and gymnasts. Let them know they should check out our gold program!

Our gymnasts tend to believe that failure is not an option, when in fact, failure is the only way to learn new things. We know that a baby learning to walk is going to fall over a million times before they are stable enough to walk consistently and confidently.
Along the way, we celebrate each attempt as if our child is solving world peace. The look of pride a toddler has when they topple over after taking 1 measly step is so bright. Don’t you wish your gymnast would have that sense of pride after trying something new, even if it isn’t perfect?
Gymnasts tend to have a hard time appreciating the importance of failing because it is not a desirable outcome. But we’re not talking about a long term outcome, we’re talking about mini failures that can help an athlete grow and learn and develop new skills.
In this episode, Stacie and Ali talk about how to help your athletes view failure through a new, more productive lens.
We would also be so grateful if you pass our podcast on to other coaches! Or simply leave a review so other coaches can get in on the mindset magic and we can help change the culture of our sport to be a place where gymnasts are healthy, happy and know how to win.

As you’re starting to get your gymnasts ready for routines, it’s inevitable that at least one of them is struggling to put the finishing touches on one or two skills they need for the season. This happens all the time. Sometimes they’re still afraid of the upgrade. They don’t want to get hurt. But most of the time, at this point in the season, what your gymnast is actually struggling with is a fear of failure, disappointment or unpleasant outcome if they don’t have the skill ready for the season. Today, Ali and Stacie talk about how to help those gymnasts who might feel stuck for one reason or another.
We would love to help any of your gymnasts who are still working to get their skills for season, especially those that are struggling with fear, frustration and the defeat of past failed attempts.

It’s that time again. The point in the year when we have to start putting the rubber to the road and start getting those routines put together. Some gymnasts are ready for this step, and it’s such an exciting time. Others however, are struggling to finalize upgrades and put pieces together.
In this episode, Ali and Stacie coach you through helping your gymnasts set realistic season goals that are challenging enough to allow them to grow throughout the season. It’s important to set big goals that are going to require your athletes to dig deep, and give them the tools to navigate through the process!

It’s hard enough to get kids to do their homework, let alone, get a busy kid to do their homework. Gymnasts have a TOUGH schedule, and homework can definitely put a damper on their precious down time.
Recently, we talked about block scheduling, essentially setting aside a block of time to do a certain activity. For homework, this can often be pretty late into the evening.
Having a planned period to do homework is great but sometimes our minds aren’t thinking clearly when the moment comes around. Even as adults, it’s typical to see the laundry that needs to be folded and choose to scroll our phones. When we’re tired in the moment, we don’t always make the best choices for our wellbeing.
In this episode, Coach Ali explains how an “I did it anyway” jar can be a useful tool for a tired gymnast who needs to crank out some homework before bed.

Jumping into a new schedule is tough for anyone, but for gymnasts who are going back to school, it can be incredibly difficult. They’ve spent their summer waking up and heading into the gym on fresh legs and fully rested. Now, some of them are spending 8 hours a day at school first, which is basically a full time job, and THEN going to practice. No wonder they’re exhausted! In this episode, Ali and Stacie break down some of their favorite time management strategies. We’re all guilty of rushing through life sometimes and not getting adequate rest, fuel or mental reprieve. We can’t expect our athletes to be experts at it if we’re not either! Looking for tools to use so that you can help your gymnast climb the thought ladder? Look no further!
In this episode, Stacie and Ali give helpful hints to help YOU help your gymnast take those next steps. One of the most important pieces of advice is communicating that YOU see a future where your gymnast is already past this set back. Reminding them that you already have the new belief they are striving to achieve is something that can instill confidence in the process for them.
When they see your belief in their future, they will start to mirror that in themselves. Doing this will also change how you coach. You’ll notice subtle differences in the language you use, which will help shift your gymnasts’ mindset to one of possibility instead of one of defeat.

“I might be wrong.” These four words can help jump start your gymnast’s mindset shift. When we start at the bottom of the thought ladder with our current thought, it’s usually not a productive one. The second step in the thought ladder is recognizing that the thought we’re currently thinking might not be correct.
The simple act of entertaining the idea that they might be wrong, is going to invite them to challenge their old belief almost immediately. “I notice I’m thinking I’m going to miss my hands on my second back handspring, and I might be wrong.”
This invites them to the second step, which leads to the third, and so on. Climbing the thought ladder is just like a progression on the beam. Start on the floor, then move to the low beam, then a higher beam, etc.

When your gymnast develops a habit that is not your favorite - (ie. a bent back leg on literally anything), it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and frustrated because they just can’t fix it. It’s not that they aren’t trying to, it’s that their body and their brain have determined that the way they are currently doing the skill is the path of least resistance. It’s not easy to make a change that is deeply ingrained and has become a habit. As coaches, we often find ourselves back tracking to reteach the skill in order to fix the problem.
This is exactly what happens when a gymnast tries to change a thought. When a gymnast has been thinking a certain thought for long enough, it becomes a belief. Their brain has been doing things its own way for a while, and thoughts can be deeply ingrained in our brain in the same way that habits are stored. Our thoughts also have a path of least resistance and just like those bent back legs, we’ve got to step in and retrain the brain to think the way we want it to think.
In this episode, Stacie and Ali talk about our most utilized tool, the Thought Ladder. It can be a process to shift thoughts from negative to positive, but stick with us. We’ve got everything you need right here.

All throughout August we will be discussing how to help your gymnasts Actually think Positively. And just like July, we have everything you need, broken down into steps. Progressions for mindset skills are just like progressions for our gymnastics skills.
When your gymnast is struggling with a negative mindset, he or she often casts themselves as a victim. The beam is the problem, or the flight series is the problem which in turn, makes the gymnast experience a victim like mentality. Once the gymnast can identify that the beam is not actually the problem, it’s the thoughts they are having about the beam, they can start to work on creating a more positive experience for themselves. In this episode, Stacie and Ali teach you how to start helping your gymnast take their power back!

Powerful fuel is created by emotions that inspire positive energy toward achieving your goals. Now that we know that, we can help our athletes focus on those energy fueling thoughts. The tough part is that our gymnasts are constantly plagued by negative emotions that pop up unexpectedly because, well… gymnastics is HARD. We all want our gymnasts to feel motivated, focused and determined all of the time, but the reality is that jumping straight to those feelings from a place of uncertainty is almost impossible.
Try introducing some progressive emotions into your gymnasts’ vocabulary. When starting the process, we like hopeful, optimistic and curious. These are positive emotions that can shine a light on skills our gymnasts may feel insecure about.
In this episode, Stacie and Ali talk about how to help our gymnasts to bridge the gap between feeling frustrated and motivated by utilizing some of the most underused feelings!

This week we’re continuing the conversation on creating powerful emotional fuel to help set your gymnasts up for success.
Did you know that you can experience two emotions at the same time? One of our favorite strategies to help our gymnasts navigate through negative emotions is to focus on a second, more positive emotion simultaneously. We call them “AND emotions” and they are here to come to the rescue.
Think about an athlete that’s scared to try something new. While they may be experiencing the emotion of fear, they can also be experiencing the emotion of excitement. In this episode, Ali and Stacie teach us how to focus our attention on positive emotion so that we can take positive actions as we move through this process.

Now that you’ve learned how to help your gymnasts allow their emotions to exist without pushing them away, you’re ready for the next step- Helping them to process those emotions. When we do this, we’re giving our brain a break from spending time on the thought and focusing our attention on the physicality of how that feeling lives inside of your body. Many times, negative emotions show up as a tight throat, sweaty palms, or accelerated heartbeats… In this episode, Ali and Stacie explain the three steps to processing the emotions that we’re experiencing.

Hardships happen. Whether it’s just a tough practice, or your gymnast is dealing with a major setback, if your gymnast has the tools to understand their emotions they can set themselves up for a tremendous comeback.
We’d all prefer to feel happy-go-lucky and positive emotions on the regular. But the truth is, we can’t experience positive emotions without having experienced negative ones as well. It’s a give-and-take. Emotions are simply a release of energy that is triggered by a thought in your brain.
It’s tempting to push down our negative emotions because we don’t want to feel them. However, just like a beach ball being held underwater, eventually that ball will pop up with a vengeance. In this episode, Ali and Stacie talk about how to allow our feelings to exist and how to navigate through them in a healthy way so you can help your gymnasts do the same.

We all know that positive thinking is important. You want your gymnasts to believe in themselves, feel confident, and banish their doubts and fears.
But if you have tried thought swapping, you know this can be harder than it seems. Learning to think of a new, more positive thought is a skill.
Just like a gymnastics skill, there are steps and progressions and it takes practice.
But the effort is totally worth it. It is the way to overcome fear, mental blocks, doubt, and performance anxiety... and enjoy gymnastics again.
Ali and Stacie teach a mindset tool this week that you can use to help your gymnasts actually think positively.

Have you ever noticed that your athletes are really motivated to work hard when things are going well, and slightly less ambitious during times of struggle? It’s pretty typical for the human brain to be excited about things that come easily, that we’re proficient in, and want to do more of that specific activity. That’s why your athletes who LOVE BARS seem to always do great at the event. For the brain, the path of least resistance is typically the path it follows. So your athletes who struggle with something specific might require a little help down that path.
This week Ali and Stacie teach a tool for gymnastics mindset training that helps your gymnasts find inner motivation, drive, focus, and determination - whatever they need. Tune in to learn more! Think about driving to your job everyday… or taking your kids to school. You could probably drive both of these routes with your eyes closed (please don’t). But if you think about it, the more we travel a specific path, the more automated the journey becomes.
When we think specific thoughts, we build a "roadway" in our brain. The more frequently we think those thoughts, the more difficult it can become to see that there are other possible "roads" we could take instead.
This week our Coaches are talking about a gymnastics mindset training tool that can help your gymnasts explore other possible thought patterns. This will help them when they are struggling with upgrades, negative thinking, mental blocks, performance anxiety and so much more. Picture this:
Your gymnast is struggling with negative thoughts and you want to help her shift her mindset. You’re clearly not a mind reader, so you ask the question, “What’s going on?” And then you hear it. Ever coaches’ least favorite response, “I don’t know.” How are you supposed to know how to help her, if she doesn’t even know what she needs?
It’s easy to get frustrated with our athletes because we observe this response as a strategy to avoid the issue. But the truth is, she probably doesn’t know what she’s thinking to cause the problem.
This is because our brains hate to be criticized. So, it will actually hide our thoughts from us if it is afraid we are going to judge ourselves harshly. Meaning, when your gymnast tries to figure out what she was thinking so that she can change it to something that is more useful, she won't be able to see it.
This week, we teach our gymnasts a mindset training activity that helps gymnasts learn to observe their thoughts in a way that helps them. Tune in! Goal setting is easy. But holding ourselves accountable to those goals is where things get tricky. Even when we do remember what our goals are, it’s hard to know what steps to take at any given moment. We have to make sure to help our gymnasts connect the daily and weekly work they do with the long term goals they hope to accomplish.

Setting a goal for the next season is so important. It gives our athletes something to strive for, and teaches accountability. Oftentimes, gymnasts set small goals so they can feel the satisfaction of accomplishing something. However, setting a BIG goal for your gymnast is critical. In this episode, Stacie and Ali explain how bigger goals can be the difference makers when it comes to the outcome of your gymnast’s season.

When your gymnast is frustrated with how things have gone in the past, they can fall victim to overgeneralizing one or two mistakes as a complete character flaw. A few falls in a meet season become "I can't compete well." Difficulty on a skill turns into "I am just bad at that event." In this episode, Ali and Stacie talk about how to help your gymnasts look at the facts of the last season, and determine how they want to think about it going forward in a way that will help them be successful in the coming year.

It’s important for your athletes to evaluate their season while everything is still fresh in their minds. After the last meet of the season, help your gymnasts take time to look back at the year. It’s easy to immediately look forward to what comes next, but there is so much to be learned from what we just did. Your gymnasts will be able to see how things came together this season so much more clearly from this vantage point.

If you really think about it, getting up and saluting that judge can be a very heavy feeling for some gymnasts. It’s particularly hard for those athletes who struggle with pressure. You know, the ones who “have to” hit this routine for one reason or another.
“I have to stick this beam routine or, (insert unlikely consequence here).”
In this episode:
Turning the “have to’s” into “WANT TO’s”
Shifting an athlete’s inner dialogue from “have to” to “want to” is an extremely powerful tool. All of a sudden, “I have to stick this beam routine” becomes “I want to stick this beam routine,” and the load immediately feels lighter. “Have to” implies pressure while “want to” implies motivation. Did you know that the physical phenomenon of feeling nervous and feeling excited are almost exactly the same? The body has a hard time distinguishing between the two emotions. It’s the brain that determines which emotion your gymnast is going to experience based on the thoughts that she is having.
In this episode:
Being able to identify emotions and how they are existing within our bodies can really help us process what we’re going through. Some gymnasts get butterflies when they are nervous and also experience butterflies when they are excited. Teaching our gymnasts how to create positive thought patterns around these feelings can help them to shift negative emotions into positive ones.

Are your gymnasts experiencing the post season blues? Sometimes it can be hard to stay the course when the end of the season is lurking near. “What if I don’t hit?” “What if I don’t qualify?” “What if my season is over after this weekend?” What if, what if, what if.
It’s common for gymnasts to push these thoughts and feelings down, but we all know that doesn’t work. We’re here to help you reframe those "what if’s” for your gymnasts.
In this episode:
If you have a gymnast that could benefit from this type of mindset training, we’d love to meet them. Work with us, to help strengthen your mind the same way you strengthen your body to compete with confidence.

Do you and your gymnasts lose motivation to keep at it? Or do you feel like you have to keep motivating your gymnasts all the time? You might need to add in some regular celebrations.
When your gymnasts think the only time they should celebrate their success is at a meet or when they hit their goal, most of their training will become unenjoyable. And unmotivating.
Teaching your gymnasts to celebrate along the way will help them create the motivation, excitement and determination they need to get to their goal.

Leah is heading into the busiest time of the year and the end of her season - and of her gymnastics career.
So we are wrapping up Lessons with Leah this week!
In this special podcast series, Florida Gator Leah Clapper takes you behind the scenes in her final season as she and the Gators go after a national title.
To reach her goals and to really enjoy her final season, she is doing mindset coaching with Gymnastics Mindset Academy. And she's letting you sit in on her sessions.
In this episode, Stacie and Leah talk about what Leah has learned through the series and her advice to other gymnasts about mindset training.
Leah’s top three takeaways from mindset coaching.
Leah’s thoughts on the power of mindset coaching.
If you are wondering what you might get out of mindset training even if you already have a fairly positive mindset, this episode is for you!
Have you struggled with trying to help your gymnasts make the corrections they need to gain those extra tenths to reach their goals? Trying different things to actually make a correction or a change in a skill is often hard for a gymnast. They want perfection right away and think that anything short of that is a problem.
This prohibits them from trying different things, learning and ultimately getting the skill correctly. They get caught up in the emotional drama of not getting it right instead of exploring what they need to do to make a change.
We teach gymnasts to use the scientific method instead - to be curious about the problem and experiment until they find what works. Join us as we share how. This tool works both in digging into details during competition season, and in learning new upgrades and skills throughout the year.
In this episode:
If you want to take the drama out of practice and help your gymnasts learn to make the corrections they need to score at their potential, this episode is for you!

Leah is heading into post season and is so excited for the final meets of the season - and of her gymnastics career.
Yet the suspense of how it is going to turn out and if it will turn out well makes her want to skip to the end.
In this episode, Stacie and Leah talk about dealing with the uncertainty of how things are going to go and how to control what you can and allow the uncomfortableness of what you can’t.
If you are counting down the days to the end of your season, but want to make every moment count, this episode is for you!
It’s time to get fired up and do the work for the last half of meet season. Now that your gymnasts are in the groove for competing, they can finally focus on making the improvements they need to reach their season goals. To fix their form, hit those handstands, and split requirements, and stick those landings.
In this episode, we talk about how we help the gymnast we work with go through the process of not only setting their goals but figuring out every single thing they need to do to actually reach them.
Most people set goals and then just keep doing the same thing they were already doing. Goals without a plan of what needs to be done to get there rarely are achieved. Help your gymnasts break down their goals for the season with the drills, skills, corrections or mindset shifts they will need to make to achieve those goals.
You know, the things you’ve been telling them about all season. Lol. But the things they actually have the ability to concentrate on now that they are past their early meet season jitters.

Are your gymnasts making their routines in practice but falling once they get to the meet?
One of the first things we teach a young gymnast is how to fall safely. Because we all know that for sure, a gymnast is going to fall. And so we prepare them for it.
And yet, we (and they) still think something has gone wrong when they actually fall in a meet. Even though ALL gymnasts fall in meets at some point.
Teaching your gymnast that falling is fine is the most effective way to help them hit consistently. Join us as we talk about why and give some ideas for helping your gymnasts adopt this belief. This will help them with performance anxiety, overcoming mental blocks and competing with confidence.

Does meet season sometimes feel like a rollercoaster of emotions for your gymnasts, totally dependent on how they did at the last meet?
Your gymnasts often time attach their feelings to their results. They think they can only feel proud if they win. Or that winning makes them happy and is the only thing that can prove that they are a good gymnast.
This can create an emotional rollercoaster for them, and you as a coach! And leaves them at the mercy of the last meet, the last judge and the last score.
At the end of the day, no one has to do gymnastics. They do it because it is supposed to be fun. We want to help you help your gymnasts enjoy the journey.
In this episode learn how to help your gymnasts gain their power back over their emotions when it comes to scores, places, and even just falls. This will help them immensely with performance anxiety, mental blocks in competition and competing with confidence.

Have you ever been unable to compete because of an injury and struggled to believe that it was going to get better in time? Or that you will be able to come back as good as you were before?
Have you ever gone into a meet and constantly imagined all the ways things could go wrong? Or been worried that you can't handle it if they do?

Every gymnast wants to compete with confidence. But even when they are totally prepared and ready, they still often don't feel that way. Because the feeling of confidence comes from recent past success doing the same thing. And their brains just usually don't agree that a meet is the same as practice. Or even past meets. Each one feels like a new challenge. So the secret is to teach them how to feel self-confident in their ability to handle the situation, whatever happens.
The third pillar to building self confidence is learning how to deal with their emotions if they fall or make a mistake. We want to avoid negative emotions at all costs. But when we are willing and able to feel disappointed, frustrated, embarrassed, angry or anything else, we feel aren't nearly as afraid of what might happen.
This leads to confidence out on the competition floor.

If you have gymnasts who struggle to think positively, this episode is for you.
As a gymnastics coach you know that your gymnast's mindset makes or breaks their gymnastics. You have tried to help them think differently, encouraged them and maybe even done some mindset work. But when you try to help your gymnasts ACTUALLY think positively, they just can't seem to do it.
Just like your gymnasts build muscle memory when they do a skill incorrectly, their brain builds pathways of thoughts. And when they have thought a thought a lot in the past, that is etched in deep. Just like when they have done a skill incorrectly for a long time. Retraining, building new muscle memory takes time and practice. And is best done with progressions. It works the same way with a thought.
Your gymnast needs this simple mindset progression and to spend time practicing it to get to a new thought.

The number one mistake gymnastics coaches make is not spending enough time - or bringing in the expertise - to train gymnasts brains. Our brains are the source of everything we do. In gymnastics, we spend most of our time coaching gymnasts on the physical actions they need to be taking. But the source of each and every action, correction and thing they do is their thoughts.
It is critical that gymnasts learn to understand their brains and how their thoughts are creating the results they are experiencing. This simple, yet powerful tool is the foundation to helping your gymnast understand their thoughts and how they are impacting them. That understanding is the key to learning how to change them. This tool will be a key for helping your gymnasts unlock mental blocks, overcome fear and learning how to hit consistently.
