On this episode of Kernels, we are tackling a controversial issue: solar panels on farmland. Luke Crumley, Director of Public Policy & Sustainability, and Owen Niese, a Richland County farmer, talk about the process and potential impacts of a policy stance like this.

Solar generation facilities have been popping up all over rural Ohio. We have been hearing from farmers from all sides of the issue, and knew that we had to take a stand.

In June of 2023 a small group was formed of farmers with varying perspectives. Their task was to work together to create a proposed policy on the issue. The group, led by Owen Niese, drafted a policy statement, which the entire OCWGA Board of Directors adopted on November 30, 2023.

In November 2018, California voters passed Proposition 12 which imposes strict requirements on farmers to provide more space for egg laying hens, breeding sows, and calves raised for veal.

Why do corn growers care? The obvious answer is the changes we could see in U.S. pork production, which could change the demand for U.S. corn, but the deeper issue is one of state regulations and interstate commerce.

Listen to Jim Heimerl explain why the agriculture community is fighting against this California regulation.

One of the highest priorities for Ohio Corn & Wheat is the promotion of ethanol in liquid fuels. This comes with a laundry list of challenges. Consumers don't know what ethanol is and how it works, retailers have legislative hurdles to get through to offer the product, growers may not fully grasp what their product is being made into, electric vehicles are becoming more and more of a hot topic, and so much more. It's a good thing we have the man for the job.

Today we sat down with Brad Moffitt, a tenured member of the agricultural community, self proclaimed gear-head, and brand new Ethanol Specialist for Ohio Corn & Wheat. The position was created by the Corn Checkoff Board and Growers Association to acknowledge promote demand for ethanol and remove some of the issues holding it up.

Brad is here to explain what ethanol is, the complexities of how it gets into your fuel, what kind of cars can use higher blends of ethanol, and what makes him the best for the job.

Side note: Producer Jessy's car issues were not fuel related. It was a sensor that was throwing a fit.

Lucky episode 013 is all about how we keep sane during one of the most stressful times of year - planting. As tractors are firing up all over the Buckeye state, we want to remind you that we have your back and so does your community.

Hosts Luke and Marlene go through farmer-submitted answers to the questions how you keep going during planting, what's your best advice for staying positive, and how you care for yourself and your family. They also talk about personal experiences with stress management and self-preservation.

But don't think this episode is all meditation and therapy. While we are talking about a serious topic, you also get a story from Luke on how he used exercise to "inspire" his Marines and the embarrassing thing Marlene does in the car.

How do you stay sane in the cab? What are your tricks to not throw in the farming towel and move to Florida?

What do Ohio Corn & Wheat Growers Association Board Members actually do when they fly out to Washington, DC? Is it just schmoozing with lawmakers and looking at monuments? Not even close.

Growers study issues, prepare for fast-paced and informational meetings, and gain the trust of legislators, embassy representatives, and companies. They meet with several people a day, and are often running from early morning until late into the night.

What are the top things Luke has learned about working in agriculture over the last 5 years? What are the top things Marlene wishes the general public understood about the agricultural industry?
