For the Week of HIM PE 06 07 2023 DEI Weekly Wrap Up 22: Best States for Women: The Rankings
Many of the best states for women are concentrated on the East Coast, while Southern states fare worse for female residents. WalletHub released its "2023 Best & Worst States for Women" ranking on Feb. 27, 2023. They ordered all 50 states and the District of Columbia based on women's economic and social well-being — including median earnings, unemployment rate, friendliness toward working moms and affordability of doctor's visits — and healthcare and safety — including abortion access, quality of women's hospitals, the female uninsured rate and prevalence of rape victimization.

For the Week of HIM PE 05 24 2023 DEI Weekly Wrap Up 20: Global Women's Health Index
Of the 116 countries ranked in the 2021 Global Women's Health Index, the United States came in 23rd for women's health — a worldwide demographic, data shows. The index, measured annually by Gallup and Hologic — a Marlborough, Mass.-based medical technology company focused on women's health — surveyed women in each country. Each country is then ranked on women's preventive care, basic needs, emotional health, opinions of health and safety, and individual health to produce a cumulative score out of 100. Globally, women's health scored a 54, with no country scoring better than 69.

For the Week of 4/26/23: HIM DEI Weekly Wrap Up 16: Syrian Healthcare Humanitarian Aid
As the majority of you are well aware, the month of April has been designated Arab American History Month. It is a period of time in which we are urged to celebrate, reflect upon, and honor the contributions of our Arab American friends, achievers, pioneers, and trailblazers from all aspects of life. Before the earthquakes healthcare settings in northern Syria were already struggling to support the 14.6 million people urgently needing medical care. The hospital and its associated health centers and mobile clinics specialize in providing care for mothers and babies, as well as providing local treatment for injuries and diseases, and treating sick children. Syria’s healthcare system is simply unable to cope. Let us be the change we want to see in the world. My healthcare DEI family, if you can, show Syrian hospitals some support the Humanities in Medicine way!

DEI Weekly Wrap Up: Dr. Saniya M. Habboub: Lebanese Red Cross Boss
The month of April has been designated Arab American History Month. It is a period of time in which we are urged to celebrate, reflect upon, and honor the contributions of our Arab American friends, achievers, pioneers and trailblazers throughout that immensely accomplished, yet frequently misconstrued diaspora. It is our aspiration at the Humanities in Medicine Podcast Experience that the people of Arab American ancestry can be on the receiving end of more positive, humane, and inclusive depictions. The presentation of the uplifting story of Dr. Saniya M. Habboub and her five decades long contributory efforts to the Red Cross serves as an inspiration to all of us.
In addition,
In this month of Ramadan, I hope all of you who observe.
Have had a healthy, prosperous Ramadan season.
My people.
My listeners.
My diversity, equity and inclusion DEI family.
Dr. Saniya Moustafa Habboub claimed fame as the very first woman of Lebanese descent to attend a United States medical school, and in 1931, she became the first Lebanese woman to receive a Doctor of Medicine degree abroad and become a physician in the United States of America. Dr. Saniya Habboub graduated from MCP, or the Medical College of Pennsylvania, my FAVORITE landmark medical pedagogical and training institution for women.

As the majority of you are well aware, the month of March has been designated Women’s History Month. It is a 31-day chronological EXPANSE in which we are urged to celebrate, reflect upon, and honor the contributions of feminine pioneers and trailblazers from all aspects of life, encompassing a veritable panoply of fields, one tube of Chanel red lipstick, maquillage et coiffure, good body con dress, whalebone corset, and pair of Spanx at a time.
In continuation of the Humanities in Medicine Podcast Experience, this DEI, or diversity, equity and inclusion weekly wrap up is in acknowledgement of the unparalleled life and splendid achievements of Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler, the FIRST African American woman to achieve the Doctor of Medicine, or M.D. degree in history in the United States. For the Week of 2/23/23: HIM PE DEI Weekly Wrap Up 7: United States Department of Justice INDIGENEROSITY.
For nearly half a century, tribal nations have lacked the authority to prosecute people who are not members of a tribe — even though, according to the Department of Justice, those non-Native Americans are responsible for most of the violent crimes in Native American Country. Tribal nations and their people see a direct link between the devaluing of Indigenous women’s lives through restrictions on criminal prosecutions in recent decades and the murder of Indigenous people through centuries of colonization. This amounts to a continued “genocide” against Indigenous women. Join The Humanities in Medicine Podcast Experience in a fervent appeal to the fine legal and law enforcement professionals at the United States Department of Justice to expand the protection of marginalized Native American women and children. They must show a measure of INDIGENEROSITY.

Dr. Michelle here for this week’s Humanities in Medicine DEI Weekly Wrap Up!
For the Week of 2/8/23: The Tewa & Changing Woman initiatives.
I am excited to educate you all about the fine initiatives of the Changing Woman Initiative and the Tewa Women United as possible unconventional, non-traditional models for Native American maternal-fetal care in the United States:
Changing Woman was founded in 2015 with the goal of building a new birthing facility specifically for Native women. As that work proceeded, she began caring for women in their homes, which helped her better understand some of the barriers to receiving proper care throughout the birth process.
Today, the organization focuses on three areas: reproductive health, home births and an easy-access clinic that offers immediate care regardless of whether a woman has proof of insurance.
Tewa Women United provides doulas at low or no cost and offers prenatal and postpartum care. It was founded in 1989 and based in the ancestral Tewa homelands of northern New Mexico. The effort is called Yiya Vi Kagingdi, which in Tewa means “Mother’s Helpers.”
They can be contacted at: www.tewawomenunited.org
For General Information via email: info@tewawomenunited.org
By Phone: (505) 747-3259
By Mail: Tewa Women United PO Box 397 Santa Cruz, NM 87567

For the Week of 1/31/23: The Inaugural HIM Podcast Experience Food Justice Segment.
The Three Sisters: Native American Companion Farming Treasures in Nutrition and Food Justice
The Native American Three Sisters- Are corn, beans, and squash crops.
Plant a Three Sisters Garden: Corn, Beans, and Squash | The Old Farmer's Almanac
By the time Europeans reached the shores of the Americas, the Indigenous peoples of the northern continent had developed food systems that efficiently utilized their abundant landscape to provide a relatively nutritious diet.
Three sisters' agriculture also developed as a central food system in both the North and the Southeast. The Iroquois and the Cherokee called corn, bean, and squash the three sisters' because they nurture each other like family when planted together. This is referred to as companion agriculture. Agriculturalists placed corn in small hills planting beans around them and interspersing squash throughout of the field. Beans naturally absorb nitrogen from the air and convert it to nitrates, fertilizing the soil for the corn and squash. In return, they are supported by winding their vines around the corn stalks. The squash leaves provide ground cover between the corn and beans, preventing weeds from taking over the field. These three plants thrive together better than when they are planted alone.

Great Seal of the parent organization for surgeons in the United States:
ACS Logo - American College of Surgeons - Wikipedia
The American College of Surgeons, or ACS.
The Great Seal is reflective of the positive duality and cooperativity
Between European Graeco-Roman and Native American medicine sensibilities.
The seal’s artistic depiction represents the juxtaposition between what is considered civilized medicine versus equivalently efficacious primitive healing proficiencies.
The words 'American College of Surgeons' appear in a circle around the upper portion of the emblem. Below appear the words: 'Founded in 1913,' and
'Omnibus per Artem Fidemque Prodesse' (To serve all with SKILL and FIDELITY.)

Whereas disregard and contempt for human rights have resulted in barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind, and the advent of a world in which human beings shall enjoy freedom of speech and belief and freedom from fear and want has been proclaimed as the highest aspiration of the common people,

The Humanities in Medicine DEI Weekly Wrap Up!
A weekly tidbit illustrative of the significance and virtues of various findings in the diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) arena, occasional healthcare and popular culture literature excerpts, and touches of humor and musicality.
A celebration and discussion in reverence of Dr. Martin Luther King Day, and the National Day of Racial Healing. The Wrap Up contains a microaggression mindfulness meditative exercise to initiate a healthy, productive DEI centered week.
The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. has been a revered and well-established public figure in the history of the Civil Rights Movement and the quest for diversity, equity, and inclusion in the United States and worldwide.
Due to the fact that Dr. King’s legacy is so well known, I will offer something quite DIFFERENT than what other celebrations on this national day of honor tend to offer.
It is my hope that we are all familiar with MLK’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech during the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.
One of the most popularly quoted lines from this speech is:
I have a dream that my four little children,
Will one day live in a nation,
Where they will not be judged by the color of their SKIN,
But by the content of their CHARACTER.
I have a dream.
Feel free to listen to Dr. King’s iconic, tour de force “I Have a Dream” speech via the link listed below:
https://youtu.be/vP4iY1TtS3s
In modern times,
This excerpt from the King “I Have a Dream” speech is repeated as a mantra.
Speaking of mantras,
This episode of The Humanities in Medicine Podcast Experience Weekly Wrap Up
Celebrated on January 16, 2023, the Dr. Martin Luther King National Holiday
Here in the United States,
And also honoring the National Day of Racial Healing on
January 17, 2023,
involves a presentation of a
Microaggression Mindfulness Meditation.
