22nd August 2022.
I sat in my car and recorded the first 8 minutes of my story on my phone.
I had no idea where podcasting would take me.
3 years later - over 100 guests sharing their journeys - I never would have believed it.
But what I learned is more valuable than a $10,000 camera setup, 1M downloads or landing "big name" guests.
Here's a throwback to the short and snappy episodes of recording in the closet ;)

Burnout is not expected of you in a high performance, high responsibility role.
When stepping into a role where your predecessor burned out, it's easy to fall into the trap of thinking burnout is inevitable.
"It's just the nature of the work," you might tell yourself.
But this mindset is both limiting and dangerous.
Here's why this belief is flawed and how you can chart a different course.

Why? Because your failures are the stepping stones to your success.

Are you tired out, stressed out, or completely burned out?
Recognizing the symptoms of burnout at work is essential for addressing it early and preventing more serious health or performance issues.
Burnout typically results from prolonged stress and can manifest in various ways, affecting not only you but others around you.
The early warning signs of burnout can be recognized using the AEIOU acronym, as first described by Jimmy Burroughes.*If these symptoms are persistent and interfere with your ability to function, it may be time to seek support. This could be through a mental health professional, coach, or similar guidance taking action to improve work-life balance.

When we get so caught up on achieving big goals, why do we find ourselves still procrastinating?
You don't procrastinate because of being lazy - it's a stress response. Your body sees procrastination as avoiding discomfort and seeking safety.
This does not help you overcome challenges or meet deadlines.
So, how do you recognize procrastination?
How do you stop procrastinating?
How do you stay laser-focused when you need it most?

Familiar with the phrase "Nice Guys Finish Last"?
To some extent, this is true.
If you have read Dr. Robert Glover's acclaimed bestseller "No More Mr. Nice Guy", you would discovered what Dr. Glover considers "Nice Guy Syndrome".
It's not about being authentically a nice person, but rather acting like how one perceives a "nice guy" should be, in an effort to get the appreciation and support that they "deserve".
This contributes to a whole list of toxic behaviors in the workplace & in our personal lives.
Have you experience with a "Nice Guy" in your workplace?
How do you recognize a "Nice Guy"?
How does one overcome Nice Guy Syndrome and take control of their personal development and success?

After last week's episode #134 Your Words Create Your World , I had a conversation with an old friend.
The last 12 months have been a downward spiral for him, from his relationship, to feeling cheated out of a promotion at work, and losing confidence in his self worth.
He kept repeating one phrase:
"When will this be all over, the misery, when will it all end?"
This is a key example of Your Words Creating Your World!
Let's go through a few mindset shifts and some gamified methods I use as a High Achiever to get back on track and enjoying whatever life throws at me!

Dr. Susan Landers is a neonatologist who worked full-time in the NICU for over thirty years and raised three children to young adulthood. She achieved many academic and professional accomplishments, and she encountered challenges along the way, both in her career and in her mothering. Her children presented her with common problems and some not so common, such as dyslexia, ADHD, and an eating disorder. Susan suffered through one particularly difficult period during her midlife that propelled her to make specific choices and a career change. She loves to tell stories that reassure younger mothers to know that they, too, can become a “good enough mother” especially if they work full-time.

For generations, men have been conditioned to adhere to a narrow definition of masculinity.
Traits like emotional stoicism, dominance, competitiveness, and self-reliance have been emphasized, creating a culture where men feel pressured to suppress their emotions and constantly strive for control and success.
This traditional or confined mindset is increasingly being recognized as detrimental to mental & emotional wellbeing
Now it’s time for a shift.
Last year, I had the pleasure of having Ed Frauenheim on the show, who introduced the idea of "liberated masculinity," which encourages men to break free from these outdated norms and embrace a more holistic and inclusive understanding of manhood.
But what exactly does liberated masculinity look like?

Sean Robinson is a thirty-nine year old Author, Speaker and Motivator who focuses on self-improvement, mindset shifting and habit forming. He works in the construction industry, is a volunteer firefighter. and lives with his wife & three children in Ontario, Canada. Going Dry: My Path to Overcoming Habitual Drinking is his first book. Sean, at one time in his life, was angry, overweight, drinking too much, and not the person he wanted to be in life. There were various reasons for these issues, but if you had to sum them up, it was that he never really believed he was capable of anything different. Sean was raised a certain way and started to form certain beliefs/habits that seemed impossible to break. This isn't some magical story of transformation, where someone went on a quest to find themselves (not there is anything wrong with that). There was no spiritual awakening or near death experience that prompted the change. Sean was just a person, who eventually realized life could be better than what it was. He realized he could be a better person, husband, and dad than he had been. And through thoughtfulness, dedication, and hard work he turned his life around.

The greatest thing that can happen to you is hitting rock bottom.
Seems like a strange thing to say - how can reaching the lowest point of your life be a good thing?
The worst thing that can happen is that you never hit rock bottom - you get close, but not close enough.
You get low, but not painful enough to make a change.
How low does rock bottom need to be to spark a change?
How low can you go?
Once you hit rock bottom, what is the best way to overcome the low point and start truly living again?

Have you watched Baby Reindeer on Netflix?
Right now, people have been deep-diving to reveal the identities of the show's characters, as it is based on true events.
Taking the show at face value - obsessive stalker story - is completely missing the point, in my opinion.
Richard Gadd stated that the show depicts 'an emotional truth'.
This emotional truth that we find so relatable, is that we all have a Martha Scott in our lives; a red flag that appears time and time again.

When I started my first business, I was told it was a pipe dream.
When I created my first podcast to talk about my mental health, I was told it was "committing career suicide" because no one will want to employ someone if they consider them to be "mentally unfit".
I was advised that I would be much better off to keep my mouth shut, keep my head down and stay in a secure, corporate job for the next 40 years, and save any pipe dreams for my retirement plans.
Is this really living?

Setting goals and reaching milestones is all about evolving, improving, growing - but they do not always create the sense of emotional fulfilment in the way that we think they will.
High achievers have a tendency to think "What's next?" and chase the next shiny object or goal that should take them to the next level...
But what if we made goals about loving what we already have rather chasing the things that seem beyond our reach?
This January, I'm asking you to take a moment to reflect on what you truly want to achieve this year, and explore some ideas to become fully aware of what you really want.

What do Carpal Tunnel and Burnout have in common?
Sounds like a bit of a stretch at first.
But hear me out:
Just like tennis elbow, carpal tunnel and wrist injuries are caused by grip imbalances, people often experience burnout, stress and overwhelm as a result of lifestyle imbalances.
Have you been so focused on one area of your busy lifestyle, that you have sacrificed sparing time for your family, friends, or your health,?
Dr. Terry Zachary is a former professional golfer and sports chiropractor who 'broke the code' on faulty hand exercise and grip strength training. While he played professional golf tours, Dr. Zachary witnessed dozens of repetitive gripping injuries in pro golfers that resulted in an array of debilitating finger, thumb, hand, wrist, carpal tunnel, and elbow problems.
After failing to make the PGA Tour, Dr. Zachary witnessed these same repetitive grip injuries and muscle imbalances throughout grip sports, music, gaming, the workplace, computers, smartphones & hobby.
Dr. Zachary developed Handmaster Plus to easily train all grip muscles in balance and eliminate cumbersome multiple-device hand exercises and grip training routines.
Dr. Zachary’s pursuit of passions led him to ‘lend a helping hand to hand exercise' around the world. He has sold over 1 million units, helping people to 'get a grip on grip' without risking injury.

From downplaying burnout and comparing it to a 'bad hangover' to believing only high level executives can experience burnout, there are several common misconceptions about burnout that can contribute to a lack of understanding and effective management. This lack of understanding can lead to an undermined feeling of validity, not seeking support, feeling isolated and stigmatized, often blaming oneself for burning out. "Why put in extra effort when no one appreciates it?"
Quiet quitting is a term used to describe a situation in which an employee disengages from their job and reduces their level of effort and productivity without formally resigning or making their dissatisfaction overtly known.
Instead of resigning or openly expressing their dissatisfaction, employees who engage in quiet quitting often become passive, disengaged, and demotivated in their roles.
The reasons for quiet quitting can vary and may include factors such as feeling undervalued, experiencing a lack of career advancement opportunities, having issues with their manager or coworkers, or feeling that their contributions are not recognized or rewarded.
Instead of actively seeking new employment, employees in this situation may choose to stay in their current job while mentally checking out, resulting in decreased productivity and job satisfaction.
Not only does this cost the global economy $9,000,000,000,000 every year, it is detrimental to your physical, mental and emotional health.

Have you ever wondered what sets a true leader apart from a mere boss?
Is it charisma, communication skills, or something deeper that drives people to follow someone willingly?
In this episode, we dive into the art of becoming a leader who inspires and guides, rather than just a boss who manages tasks.
Our guest, David Hatch, joins us to share his personal journey from being an 'accidental manager' to a successful leader.
Topics include: - The cross-over between leadership and burnout/managing culture
The accidental manager problem and why we're doing it the wrong way around when it comes to leadership development/training
What great leadership looks like and how it's distinct from management
David Hatch has spent his career in small businesses, including co-founding a UK 'new space' company and more recently founding Griffon Consulting. He has broad, deep knowledge in leadership, team-building, project delivery and implementing innovative new Earth Observation-derived services in agriculture and other sectors. David has an MSc in Business & Management, is a Fellow of the Institute of Leadership and is on a mission to help first-time managers working tech-driven businesses and teams, and who want to be more effective, people-first leaders by overcoming the obstacles associated with making that step up from ‘doing the work’ to ‘leading the work’.

Our brains process over 70,000 thoughts every day, but that doesn't mean every thought we have is 100% truth.
Are your thoughts, your beliefs, holding you back from success?
Confirmation bias is our natural tendency to take new information and use it to confirm a belief system that we already have.
Our brain works hard to make new information fit, so sometimes we’ll even twist or ignore parts of what we’ve learned to avoid having to question our belief system.
But we can minimize the effect of conformation bias and overcome the self-sabotage that occurs because of it.

We're often told to trust our intuition, to listen to our body.
But with decades of conditioning with limiting beliefs, poor nutrition and brain fog, can we say with confidence that our bodies can make the best decisions for our health? Or are they now programmed to sabotage every decision and opportunity?
I've noticed a few key lessons from my burnout recovery journey that have popped up over the last 20+ interviews, and looking back, this 3 step framework was the foundation to staying consistent in my recovery, keeping my growth on track and overcoming setbacks to this day.

2023 - A year of new beginnings?I've already come across people that have let their New Years Resolutions slip and they simply tell themselves "Ah well at least I tried" and "I don't know why I even bother, it's not who I am" January is not the only time of the year you can start something new.It seems that when it comes to goal setting, many people fail to stay on track because they feel like the new habit that they're developing is a threat to their identity. Here lies the million-dollar question: " What does it take to create a fresh start?" 🤔 Let's find out in today's episode of GYSL!
My focus for January is to help you make a decision. Stop making willy-nilly New Year's Resolutions that you give up on 2 weeks later. Take a step back. Think about the change you want to see in your life. How can you make that happen in 2023? If you tried and failed before, it isn't because you're broken or doomed to fail at everything. It's probably because you've been conditioned your whole life with a fixed mindset. And fortunately, you can change this. Developing a Growth Mindset may be the key to unlocking your success.
