A deep dive into scrap metal pricing and how to read scrap price markets with Josh Musser of Weiner Iron and Metal. Learn the details of upgrading scrap metal to make the most for your money and for your customers, as well as many of the details behind the pricing of scrap metals aluminum, copper, brass, stainless steel and steel. The Crew learned all about pricing of metal markets, the Midwest Premium's impact on the Aluminum pricing world. Josh went from an economics major in college who paid his way through school working in manufacturing and construction to a leader in the foundry world working his way up from the bottom. This hands on approach is similar to how the Sahd Metal Crew is learning and they discussed plenty of parallels on management challenges when young employees manage older employees when they have less experience. All of this operations experience helps Josh when trading metals because he has a great deal of experience in understanding the exact recovery of metals melted because he was part of that process. The trading side and his interest in all things economics fulfills his general interest in how economies run since his youth and that is what led him to his current position at Weiner Iron and Metal. This as a great conversation and we hope to get Josh back in the dumpster soon!

Last week we were honored to sit down and talk to our friend Jeff Nicklaus of J&J Material Handling. Almost every Christmas gift we bought or returned sat on a rack that a company like J&J installed and serviced. The rapid expansion of warehousing and store redesigns is a fast-moving business with narrow deadlines and many logistical challenges. It takes a dynamic team like J&J to pull it off--we learned a great deal about the business from Jeff!

Lean manufacturing has helped keep unit costs low and system efficiencies allow for the engineering of products that can compete and be better than the imported alternative
Putting a Made in the USA tag or a patch on an item demonstrates a company's commitment to the USA manufacturing economy and is worth a premium. If our friends and neighbors have jobs that are good-paying they become customers for our goods and services.
The key factors that make reshoring more likely in one industry over another is the size of the product (bigger items and heavier items are more costly to ship halfway across the world) and the relationship between the cost of the materials needed and the labor cost. The higher the cost of the material (expensive leather) the more likely the ability to make the item domestically.
Companies that are interested in promoting the commitment to the environment, buying local, safety standards are going to be more interested in buying domestically...
The Christmas supply chain will be a mess with empty shelves and shortages. Current shipping times are out into January. Big companies will have inventory available, squeezing out smaller companies because they have monopolized the supply chain.
Sahd Metal Recycling commitment to asking can the product we are buying be Made in America and if so what is the cost difference? Making our supply chain purchases as domestic as possible will help all of us in the long run!
