In this episode of THE MENTORS RADIO, Host Tom Loarie talks with Tom Hardin, dubbed the FBI’s “Tipper X.” An undergraduate of the University of Pennsylvania’s prestigious Wharton School of Business, Hardin’s promising career as a young financial analyst and junior partner at a small hedge fund in Manhattan, segued into Hardin becoming the youngest trader to be caught in a massive insider training FBI sting. Hardin agreed to cooperate with the FBI—agreeing to wear a hidden wire on more than 40 occasions—and ultimately becoming one of the most prolific informants in securities fraud history. His cooperation helped to build more than 20 of the 80+ individual criminal cases in “Operation Perfect Hedge,” the largest insider trading investigation of a generation. This episode delivers a riveting, raw, unvarnished conversation with Hardin on self-deception, the high price of “fitting in”, and how to survive life’s absolute worst moments. He wasn’t publicly dubbed “Tipper x” until early 2010. At the time, he had less than 12 hours to prepare his relatives before his name was made public. As you’ll hear, Tom Hardin doesn’t hide behind the word “mistake.” He openly admits: “I did this intentionally.” That radical accountability is what allowed him to rebuild his life, find his faith, and serve as a warning sign to keep other leaders from sliding down the same slippery slope. Of course he cannot work in the financial field with a felony conviction, but in 2016 the FBI invited him to speak to agents about his side of the story, which proved to be quite eye-opening for some of the younger agents. A few of the agents told Harding they felt others in the financial, hedge fund industry would benefit from his story. He has now shared his first-hand cautionary tale to more than 150 audiences, including 90 hedge fund firms.

In broader context, we tend to think that massive personal and professional failures happen overnight. But they don’t. In reality, these failures happen through quiet, everyday compromises in two critical areas: (1) The Trap of “Fitting In” — There is a dangerous difference between finding a place where you belong and twisting yourself to “fit in.” Fitting in is an active sacrifice. To fit in with an elite crowd, we silence our voice, compromise our values, and erase our true self. When young Wharton graduate Tom Hardin entered the high-stakes world of Wall Street, his desperate desire to fit in clouded his moral judgment. Because Hardin lacked grounded mentors early in his career to model real ethics, he slipped into self-deception. Once you deceive yourself, you can deceive anyone – and lose your soul in the process. (2) The Danger of “Turning Against” Your Spouse — Statistics show that only 15% of marriages survive a federal felony conviction. Yet, Tom’s wife, Sue, stood fiercely by his side. When asked how she survived the trauma of his arrest, her answer was simple: “He never turned on me.” He made terrible, illegal choices, but he never demeaned her, hid from her, or directed his failures at her. Ultimately, too many relationships dissolve – sometimes invisibly – because one partner slowly begins to turn against the other, chip away at their dignity, or demean them. In a crisis, if you turn on each other, destruction is guaranteed.

In this episode of THE MENTORS RADIO, Host Tom Loarie talks with Major General David Smith, USAF, deputy to the Chief of Air Force Reserve at the Pentagon. You’ll learn about a realm most people never get to see: the intersection of high-stakes national defense, cutting-edge technology and extreme physical endurance. General Smith is a combat-proven command pilot with over 4,000 flying hours—including 700 in combat across operations like Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. On his last appearance, as an F-16 Squadron Commander, he discussed what it takes to get your goals and dreams airborne. Since then, his leadership journey has scaled significantly. In this episode, we aren’t just talking about flying fighter jets. We are tracking a lifetime journey of constant re-invention—from the cockpit of an F-16, to operationalizing the advanced F-35 platform, to studying Artificial Intelligence at MIT and Harvard. We also dive deep into General Smith’s core thesis: why physical fitness is a non-negotiable leadership responsibility, and how that legacy of grit is carrying forward to the next generation of American leaders. General David Smith has flown in combat and conquered the Ironman World Championship, and shares insights about why physical grit, constant re-invention and data-driven innovation are the ultimate keys to sustaining your life’s goals. You will not only learn about leadership, but also about teamwork, humility, trust, and translating cockpit “wingman” reliance into selflessness and service in corporate culture. General Smith’s own 30+ year career spans commanding fighter squadrons, operationalizing the cutting-edge F-35, and studying Artificial Intelligence at MIT, Harvard and John Hopkins. He knows exactly what skills the next generation will need to navigate a rapidly evolving future. You’ll learn about the Ironman Mindset, breaking down the mental “wall” of an endurance race to conquer massive organizational barriers. And you’ll learn about the Future of Talent; Why tomorrow’s leaders must anchor themselves in STEM and AI while maintaining core human values. General Smith also talks about family legacy, and he and his wife Stacy raised two incredible, service-driven daughters: Sidney (Virgnia Military Institute graduate) and Ella (a standout collegiate athlete at the U.S. Naval Academy). Whether you are an aspiring young professional or a C-suite executive, this discussion is packed with actionable wisdom. *LISTEN TO the radio broadcast live on iHeart Radio, or to “THE MENTORS RADIO” podcast any time, anywhere, on any podcast platform – subscribe here and don’t miss an episode!*

In this episode of The Mentors Radio, Host Dan Hesse talks with former U.S. Coast Guard Commandant Admiral Thad Allen about leadership during a crisis. Whether it’s a business crisis, family crisis, natural disaster, supply chain nightmare, government-mandated pandemic shutdown or something else, ethical leadership can make all the difference in ultimately navigating to “safe shores.” Our guest mentor today, Thad Allen, has a lot to share about leadership and crisis leadership. During his Coast Guard career, Allen was asked by two U.S. Presidents to take over leadership of the Federal response to two monumental crises—the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and the catastrophic Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. To achieve resolution in each of these disasters required bringing together a wide swath of diverse constituencies—each with their own focus, concerns, habits of communication and pain points. No easy task. Allen was so successful in his efforts that he became known in some circles as “the master of disaster.” Allen also led the Atlantic Coast Guard forces in response to the 9/11 attacks and coordinated the U.S. Coast Guard response to a major Haitian earthquake. But what was Allen’s secret for bringing very diverse groups together, leading them to work together to achieve a common goal? How did he herd cats in a crisis? Among other things you’ll learn that one of the first things he does—every time, in every disaster with which he was involved—is to focus first on forging a unity of purpose and a culture of compassion. Yes. People First. Every Time! That required hyper-focused listening, clarity of assessment, finding the common threads and building on those, and… did we mention listening, putting people first?!! The lessons and experiences Thad Allen shares in this episode are worth more than gold for any human on the planet—in business, work, life, anywhere, anytime… and for cats too, if they’d only listen. In this episode of THE MENTORS RADIO, Host Tom Loarie talks with Randy Hain, founder of Serviam Partners, a nationally respected executive coach, and the author of 16 books—including Essential Wisdom, Becoming a More Thoughtful Leader, and most recently, Practical Virtue An Actionable Guide to Help You Become a Leader Worth Following. In this latest work, Randy makes the case that mastering virtue is not only essential to career success, but even more importantly, to success in life. In this episode of THE MENTORS RADIO, Host Tom Loarie talks with Catherine Harrington, PhD Renown as an innovator in organization psychology, Dr. Catherine Harrington’s work has profoundly impacted countless lives and organizations. That said, her own journey is nothing short of extraordinary. After earning her doctorate, Catherine found her true calling in executive search and organizational psychology, helping organizations and individuals thrive together. Host Tom Loarie, in his role as CEO of a venture-funded medical startup at the time, experienced Catherine’s work first-hand and saw what a profound difference she made in his company. In a similar way to how a doctor guides a patient to health, she guided the company to organizational health through a combination of clearly understanding the company’s objective and purpose, taking the time to literally walk around, engage and listen to individual employees at all levels, and evaluating the results. Again like a doctor, Dr. Harrington then made recommendations that would improve the health of the organization. This happened over time, as she continued to observe, engage, “take the temperature” and evaluate results. Catherine’s success in implementing innovative programs that transformed the company culture were so powerful that the company achieved an employee turnover rate of 80% BELOW the Silicon Valley average! In this episode, Tom and Catherine will explore the strategies that drove these remarkable results and how Catherine’s approach to communication, culture and individual empowerment can serve as a model for any organization—from small business, family, nonprofit to large corporation. You’ll learn insights that can transform YOUR company (or nonprofit or even family) culture for lasting success. Listen to our radio podcast anywhere, any time, on any platform, click here!

In this episode, The Mentors Radio Host Dan Hesse talks with Joe Montana, one of the greatest football players in history, a four-time Super Bowl champion. As Montana famously put it, “Always be prepared to start,” which sums up his approach to life on and off the field. Widely respected by teammates, coaches and colleagues as a phenomenal leader, Montana teaches us how to get the most out of those around us and how to perform under pressure. His Chiefs have won seven consecutive AFC West titles and hosted five consecutive AFC championship games. He’s considered an offensive mastermind, seems to be well-liked by everyone, and 11 NFL head coaches were mentored by Andy as branches on his famous “coaching tree.”

In this episode, The Mentors Radio host Tom Loarie talks with Samantha McRoskey, Director of Research for Portman Square Group, about background checks, due diligence, fraud investigations and more. These investigative procedures have become an important part of the global business landscape, as well as locally, in vetting new hires, social media monitoring, fraud, theft, surveillance, reputation and ethics due diligence, risk assessments, counterfeiting, litigation support and much more. Samantha (“Sam”) is familiar with all of it.

For more than 10 years, Sam has conducted and contributed to a range of complex due diligence, risk assessment, and investigative projects as part of the Portman Square Group team. Her work has spanned Latin America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. She has also worked extensively on Foreign Corrupt Practices Act reviews for corporate clients working in international jurisdictions. She is a Spanish and Portuguese speaker.

Sam graduated magna cum laude from the University of Notre Dame with a B.A. in English and holds an M.A in International Relations from Yale University. She also conducted research and studied in Mexico as a Fulbright Scholar.

Sam delivers an insider look behind the scenes of these investigations, tells us what we should know about them, shares the kind of information they provide, and has some tips on how to pass any investigation without being “red-flagged.” She also explains the difference between what we can learn from an internet search vs. professional background or due diligence research. Did we mention she’s also a mother of five? Perhaps most fascinating of all, you’ll likely be surprised to learn that you will not be remembered the way you might think!
