The Church of Philadelphia was one of only two churches the received good report from Jesus. Jesus commends the church for keeping His word and not denying His name in the face of tribulation. In other words, he commends them for their faithfulness. Faithfulness is an underrated quality in 2022, and yet it will only be faithful churches that make it. This Sunday Ps Matt will explain what it means to be faithful in today's culture.

We can all experience seasons where our faith is tested. Today many Christians around the world find their faith being tested when they experience persecution for following Jesus. Just under 2000 years ago, Jesus sent a letter to a church in Smyrna who were experiencing this very thing. The advice he gave them, is the advice he gives us. Everyone has values. Our values often reflect our priorities or what’s important to us. For Christians, when we become followers of Jesus our values often change to reflect the priorities of the Kingdom of God. One of Jesus’s values is how we manage our wealth. It might shock you, but nearly half of Jesus parables are about wealth. If these things matter to Jesus, they matter to us. But His death would not last and it gave way to life. The Eternal King Jesus was resurrected by Sunday and continues to reign today offering eternal life anyone who chooses it. This is the story of Easter.

Human beings have a way of taking things that are simple and making them complicated when we don’t want to do them. The bible encourages us to give our finances and be generous. Simple right? It is so important that we do not deviate from the true gospel; one of grace, freedom and unmerited favour. We cannot add to our salvation. We must guard our hearts and our minds to ensure that we do not deviate from the truth or become deceived as the enemy desires.
We all have challenges in life. Sometimes we don’t know if our circumstances are mid-way through a season, or is it the end of a season? Does our story end with a great testimony, or tragedy? Often we just don’t know. Is this the end of a marriage; the fall of a business, the end of a healthy life? Wherever life takes you, no matter the circumstances or what you hear, you always need to let Jesus have the last word, because He can bring any situation back to life.
What does it mean to be blessed? If blessed is rich, then the poor can never be blessed. If blessed is always more, then you can never be blessed. 2000 years ago Jesus radically redefined what it meant to be blessed in His Sermon On The Mount. Blessed is not the catch cry of the rich but the declaration of the poor; those in morning; those who need justice; the persecuted. You are blessed, because our greatest possession is Jesus and our relationship with him. You are blessed because of our association with Him.
Living in a world of ever-changing opinions, sometimes it can be hard to work out who you are supposed to be. We all feel the pressure of becoming somebody that world says we should be and as a result, we can easily find ourselves ‘shopping’ for our identity. This isn’t how God has called us to live; your identity is not up for grabs and it doesn’t go out of fashion. When we declare truth over our identity, we position ourselves to walk out our life in true freedom, as He has created us to live.
We all have seasons that try to convince us they’re bigger than God. If you lean into that, you might be filled with fear over faith. But, fear and faith entertain possibilities. Fear and faith both ask the question “but what if...?” Why do some people have great faith and others struggle? Why do some have faith and others don’t have faith at all? What is faith? When it comes to God -faith is profoundly relational. At a basic level, you must believe that God exists to have faith in him, but for that faith to grow, you must believe he responds to those who seek him. If you walked with God in every season and had our spiritual eyes open, how would we respond to the seasons that try to convince us they’re bigger than God? If you knew God was with you and saw Him as he is, you’d be filled with courage, peace and feel like anything is possible. The clearer we see him, the stronger our faith gets.
We can’t remember everything that happens in life but there are moments that stick out. It’s the specific events and life defining moments we never forget. We use chronos time to measure days, hours and minutes, but ‘karios time’ is the moments of ‘divine appointment’ as in ‘the set, due or opportune time. We can’t plan these moments, but we can position ourselves for them. One moment with God can change your life forever. Do what you can to position yourself for a Kairos moment and you may never be the same again.
We often go through the same circumstances, but we don’t always see them the same way. We can approach our situations as either problems or purpose. We live out of our reality, so we need to make sure that we see clearly so we can walk boldly. Often the truth can be veiled, so we need God to reveal truth to us, so we don’t get trapped in our problems.
Once a year Australian families come together to celebrate and honour our Mum’s. Motherhood can be challenging at times and the last century has seen the world deal with its fair share. While Mum’s lead their families through uncertainty, it can be easy to feel like circumstances are out of our control. Truth is, we don’t need to be in control, rather we need to know and put our trust in the One who is, Jesus. When we put our faith, trust and hope in Jesus, we can have peace in uncertainty. For some, living up to the standards and expectations of others can feel overwhelming but that’s not how God wants us to live. He created each of us for our own purpose and we need to be comfortable in who we are. When we ask, God can give us the grace we require for every season.
What we believe about God directly influences the way we live. People agree that Jesus is our saviour and he loves us, but let's not forget that he is also Lord of all creation. If you really know Jesus, then you’ll naturally have a healthy reverence for him. Reverence leads to greater faith and peace in our lives since it comes from an understanding of God’s power and dominion. People who revere God naturally don’t fear man, since the fear of man is a product of not having a proper picture of who Jesus is. Reverence isn’t a negative thing, it’s a great thing birthed from an encounter. When you encounter Jesus as sovereign Lord, it will change your life. Since reverence produces obedience which leads to radical transformation.
What rules your mind runs your life, so you have to be careful what you read and listen to. Your mind can develop a mental structure that the bible refers to as a ‘stronghold’ and this will govern how you live. We need to manage the tension between information and obsession. You need to Take back the truth of what you believe and learn when to hand over control to God. The devil cannot take your mental health, you hand it over to him when you act on what he says. Be intentional about reading the bible, declaring its truth, praying and praising God -this will renew your mind.
Open Doors is an incredible organisation who help people follow Jesus all over the world, no matter the cost. They distribute bibles, train pastors, leaders and offer practical support. What might not be surprising is how the persecuted church is helping western nations understand the cost of following Jesus. They are truly inspirational. Listen to Gabriel as he speaks about the cost of following Jesus, taking a posture of praise and staying faithful. You will be encouraged and challenged.
So often we think it’s the end of the road, but God continually shows us that he can make a way against impossible odds. Every time something looks dead in our lives, we need to remember that God can raise it up. If we predict how God will work, we may miss what he’s doing in the moment. We need to trust God no matter what we go through.
Everyone makes mistakes, but those mistakes can be costly. It doesn’t just affect religious people, it affects everyone. We all go through trials, but our peace doesn’t come from avoiding them, rather that God is with us when we face them.Often our trials become our testimonies if we keep going and see what God does with them.
Christ is the supreme example of loving and faithful service to God, and mature Christians can also serve as role models in this regard.
