Growing up has its challenges for all of us. For some, school is a great time full of friends, parties, sporting events, and lots of fun. For others, school is an absolute nightmare. Now, imagine being a teenager or even younger and knowing that you are in the wrong body. Or simply that you do not feel like the gender that you have lived as for your whole life so far. Telling these kids that they are wrong can have extremely detrimental effects on their emotional development and their mental health. Join us as we discuss how we can help these kids during this tumultuous time in their lives.

Sarah is a middle School Drama Teacher and Candidate for the MEd in school counselling from City University of Seattle. They have been working with and supporting youth in this community for over five years, acting as their school’s SOGI Lead (Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity) & GSA Sponsor (Gender & Sexuality Alliance Club). Her research focuses on identifying how trauma impacts trans and gender non-conforming youth, and seeks to determine what practices and strategies can be implemented within schools to mitigate harm for students within this community.
