Welcome to Episode number 100 of Creative Distillation! We’re still in San Francisco at the fantastic Pagan Idol tiki bar. We’ve moved from the secret back room to the main deck of this magic vessel, where Brad and Jeff are joined by two guests: Tom Dean, a professor in the Department of Management at Colorado State University and previous guest on the podcast; and Bob Eberhart, Associate Professor of Management at the University of San Diego, and perhaps the most frequent guest to appear on Creative Distillation. (We’ll have more on that later.)Already a couple of tiki drinks into the evening, our fearless four gather around a tiny table, discussing the impact of the first 100 episodes of Creative Distillation, and musing about our humble podcast’s future. To prepare for this episode — and unbeknownst to each other — Brad and Jeff each fed transcripts from all of our episodes into their preferred AI oracle in order to see what kind of actionable insights might be gained from that. We are excited to be coming to you from the golden shores of California, the City by the Bay, and one of the tiki capitals of the world: San Francisco. This is Episode #99, the first of three conversations in Creative Distillation’s 100th episode celebration, which kicks off with Brad finally joining Tiki Time with Jeff to speak with Maggie Sanders, General Manager of Pagan Idol.Maggie describes how she’s gone from growing up on a California berry farm to being the General Manager of one of the city’s more legendary tiki bars — all while mixing a Daywalker for Jeff and a Rum Martini for Brad. Jeff’s tiki protocol leads to a deep dive into the culture and customer experience of tiki, and the different ways different customer types interact with the bar. After geeking out on tiki’s history and sharing their earliest personal tiki memories, Maggie, Brad and Jeff look to the future of tiki, and potential innovations and new interpretations. (A Black Sabbath-themed tiki party, for example.) As they (almost) always do, Brad and Jeff bring it back to showing the broader lessons that tiki culture can offer any entrepreneur, namely the importance of experimentation, adaptation, and storytelling.It’s a truly delightful conversation with one of the best mixologists we’ve ever had on the podcast. CDEP98: JEFF’S JET PILOT AND BRAD AND JEFF’S TIKI ANALYSIS PART 2Welcome back for Part 2 of Brad and Jeff’s Tiki analysis, a look at the major eras of tiki through the lens of Martin and Rebecca Cate’s book, Smuggler’s Cove. In part 1, over a Three Dots and a Dash stirred up by Jeff himself, our co-hosts dive into the mythic-but-true history of Don the Beachcomber, founder of the first tiki bar in 1933. This time around, over a Jeff-crafted Jet Pilot, we learn of Trader Vic’s emergence on the scene in 1937, and how he took Don the Beachcomber’s genius idea and turned it into a worldwide franchise. As they’ve done countless times over our 7 seasons of Creative Distillation, Jeff and Brad compare the differences in the two entrepreneurs’ approaches, and examine the pros and cons of each. They also look at the cultural factors contributing to the tiki craze (think: Elvis, the Beach Boys and the rise of surf music, and Disneyland’s Enchanted Tiki Room) and how tiki’s “authentic inauthenticity” begins to permeate American culture in general.As we’ve come to expect from the Creative Distillation guys, they stick the landing by tying all of this tiki madness into the broader cultural context and the role of storytelling in entrepreneurship. This episode, our last from “GURK,” the Global Enterepreneurship and Innovation Research Conference held in Boulder in June 2024, features a conversation with another one of Jeff’s academic heroes and GURK founder, Mike Lenox. He's a Professor of Business Administration at the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business, of which Jeff is an alum. Mike’s influence helped Jeff focus his interest on CleanTech entrepreneurship, and the two have published several papers together.Our bartender today is none other than Brad, who mixes his signature Manhattan while Jeff and Mike reminisce a bit about their Darden days before getting into more serious discussion about how clean entrepreneurship bridges our dichotomous political chasm on climate change. In cases where new clean tech demonstrates superior effectiveness over carbon-intensive technologies, the markets do their thing and the clean tech wins.They also poke holes in the Panacea Hypothesis, which holds that entrepreneurship alone will solve all the world’s problems. For this episode, another in our series of recordings from the Global Entrepreneurship and Innovation Research Conference, which took place in Boulder in June 2024, we welcome Elvira Soily, Associate Professor in the School of Banking and Finance at the University of New South Wales in Australia.Elvira’s not a drinker, so this time out, Boulder-made Rowdy Mermaid Kombucha is on the menu. As it happens, Elvira makes her own kombucha at home. As such, you are about to learn more about kombucha than you ever imagined you’d want to.On the topic of entrepreneurship research, Elvira touches on a few topics, all stemming from her fascination with the question of what to do when you know information exists, but the corporation is not revealing it. Specifically, she’s referring to how many large corporations mask their research expenditures, and that practice’s interesting implications for competitor research and insights into strategy.This eventually leads to discussion of Elvira’s current research, which reveals that when a firm is hit with EPA actions, it tends to trigger quick filing of clean innovation patents they’ve been holding as trade secrets. These filings reveal useful info to other firms using those technologies. On this episode recorded in June 2024 at the Global Entrepreneurship and Innovation Research Conference in Boulder, Brad and Jeff speak with Jay Habegger, a CU grad now pursuing his PhD at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business. Jay’s story is unique because, after over 20 years as an entrepreneur and two-time founder, he’s now studying entrepreneurship and trying to contribute to our understanding of it.As they enjoy a light and refreshing Upslope German Pilsner, Jay tells Brad and Jeff about his research, which focuses on the regional distribution of venture capital, and tries to explain why differences exist between finding investors in the “Big 3” hubs (Silicon Valley, New York, and Boston) where one-half of all equity financing transactions happen -- and the rest of the country.Jay’s research asks: are these transactions equal? It turns out, they are not. Outside of the hubs, it’s a steeper search challenge to find investors; most financing involves less money and takes longer to find; and non-hub companies must often deal with a different investor type than they’d find within the hub.The upshot of the research is, no matter where the company is located, it must still “show up” by embedding itself in the networks trafficking in the capital they seek. This time on Creative Distillation, we gather at Jeff’s ranch, where he and Brad speak with Matthew Grimes, Professor of Entrepreneurship and Sustainable Futures, and co-director of the Cambridge Judge Entrepreneurship Center at Cambridge University’s Judge School of Business. In this episode, hosts Jeff York and Brad Werner are joined by Andy Wu, Assistant Professor of Business Administration in the Strategy Unit at Harvard Business School, where he teaches in the MBA and Executive Education programs.
This discussion was recorded on a Friday evening at Jeff's kitchen table, and features a "Boulder vs Boston Beer Off", in which Brad, Jeff and Andy sample several years from Colorado, and one from Boston. Then the trio explore the disconnect between topics covered in academic papers and real-world questions business owners need addressed.
Wu acknowledges that a significant portion of academic research doesn’t serve entrepreneurs or managers. York discusses how he intends for his own research, which examines how entrepreneurship can address climate change, to be translated into something useful for people, whether it’s students, activists or policy makers. Werner posits thinking around entrepreneurship is limited by its close association with business schools, when it could be a powerful tool to bring people together and generate new ideas.

Podcast: Part Two of Executive MBAs Night Out Features a Private Q&A Session With Successful Entrepreneurs and Leeds’ Faculty.
Continuing with their slightly different approach to the Creative Distillation research podcast, hosts Brad Werner and Jeff York are again joined by Upslope Brewing Company founder Matt Cutter for a Q&A session with students from the inaugural Executive MBA Program at CU Boulder’s Leeds School of Business.
Set against the backdrop of Upslope Brewing’s grain auger churning in the background, Leeds’ Executive MBAs continued to pose challenging questions, such as: what are York and Warner’s perspectives about the importance of values and support systems when starting an organization; the supply chain challenges and changes Cutter faced during COVID; and then delving into York’s research-focused and Werner’s investor-based perspectives on taking an organization from bootstrap to exit in 10 years.
Highlighting aspects of the discussions, the hosts addressed the challenges and opportunities that arise when starting an organization. Specifically, focusing on building a team, including finding the right people. This is where York and Werner differed on approaches but agreed on the importance of values.
“Incorporate your values from day one…and be open to advice” Warner said.
While addressing a question about supply chain management, Cutter offered an impactful story around industry wide challenges faced during COVID. “We got to notice at the end of November that we would have to go with five truckload minimums, which is a million cans. [That’s] for one SKU; we have nine SKUs that we run year-round plus our limited releases, like the German pils[ner]. And the upper cut was a 45% price increase. Oh, wow.” Cutter said. On Episode 26, we try a new approach to the Creative Distillation podcast: recording in front of a live audience consisting of students enrolled in the CU Leeds School of Business Executive MBA Program. This special Creative Distillation event took place at Upslope Brewing's taproom. — EPISODE 25 Ska Street Brewstillery and The Impact of Location Considerations on Venture Performance On Episode 25, our merry band of academics met at Ska Street Brewstillery on a snowy Friday in Boulder, and discussed the efficiencies and challenges of running a Brewstillery, and Ska Street's overriding sense of devotion to creating and hosting community. With business starting to return to pre-Covid levels, Brad and Jeff, along with Ska Street's co-founder Dustin Hall and General Manager Katie Nierling, toasted the business' surviving the pandemic. Then -- as you'll hear in the "special intro" to this episode, the following Wednesday it was announced that Ska Street had closed "indefinitely." A recording location closing before the recording actually airs: definitely a Creative Distillation first. We had a truly fantastic time at Ska Street and are sorry to see them go. We hold out hope that they will someday return.
We were also joined by Dean Sharon Matusik from CU's Leeds School of Business. She enthusiastically took part in the Ska Street segment (she was happy that her second appearance on the podcast wasn't again held at a coffee roastery), then stuck around to share the latest entrepreneurship activities at Leeds and the Deming Center (spoiler: there's a lot going on) as well as discuss "Location capabilities, institutional distance, and start-up survival" a paper she co-wrote along with Carla V. Bustamante (Director of a Masters Degree in Entrepreneurship and Innovation at CU Boulder) and Jose Miguel Benavente (Professor at Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez in Chile). The paper examines the effects of institutional distance and location capabilities on international start-ups' survival rates.

— EPISODE 24 Sanitas Brewing and Autonomy Over Choosing Teams and Ideas On Episode 24, the Creative Distillation crew stops by Sanitas Brewing in Boulder for a wide-ranging and fun conversation with brewery co-founder Michael Memsic. In addition to landing on the perfect number of sample beers (four) to accompany an episode of Creative Distillation, they get into the Sanitas' approach to creating their lineup of "beer-flavored" beer, the challenges to the business posed by Covid (not to mention the 2013 Boulder flood), and Jeff shows off his knowledge of beer history and brewing technique, particularly with regard to sours.
Brad and Jeff then launch into this episode's paper: "Organizing Entrepreneurial Teams: A Field Experiment on Autonomy over Choosing Teams and Ideas." The research looks into whether giving startups autonomy over their team or their ideas -- but not both -- vs. giving them complete autonomy leads to better outcomes. The results may surprise you (they surprised Brad). The conversation weighs the dangers of overconfidence and echo chambers against the benefits of creating a company culture that questions every decision they make, the unique efficacy of "startup studios" and how knowledge plus passion equate to a higher likelihood of success.

Brad and Jeff then discuss the paper "Stakeholder identification as entrepreneurial action: The social process of stakeholder enrollment in new venture emergence," (Journal of Business Venturing) which looks into the importance of new ventures identifying stakeholders (including financiers, employees, customers, suppliers and communities) through social action (aka talking to people), and how that can guide a venture's entrepreneurial imagination and development.
