In the beginning of the lockdown many workers were left destitute because they couldn't claim for UIF, simply because their employer didn't register for UIF. Most of the workers who were affected were casual workers, migrant workers and domestic workers. The Casual Workers Advice Office reached out to Kelly Kropman from Kropman Attorneys in Rosebank, Johannesburg to assist them. Kelly and a team of expert lawyers from different law firms took the case to court and won. Employees who have been working for years but were not registered for UIF could now claim compensation from the Department of Employment and Labour. It has brought huge relief for families who were in very desperate situations with no possibility of an income. Though it was a tough and extremely stressful time for the lawyers and the advocates who were part of the legal team, Kelly believes that it was nothing compared to what workers were experiencing when they had to go for months without an income.
