Scholars and skeptics have pointed out several “problems” in Luke's account of Jesus' birth. This week we will dive into these problems. Indeed, there are a few historical points that even make Christian scholars think and have to dig into the history more. However, these "problems" in Luke do not give us cause for concern once studied. Instead, they're an opportunity to learn and do more research into the time of Jesus’ birth. When we do so, we see there is no reason to seriously doubt Luke's account.
Issues discussed from Luke 2:1-5:
The timing of the census
The timing of Quirinius' governorship
The need for pregnant Mary to return to Bethlehem for the census at all

This week Leah and Andrew discuss the movie Hocus Pocus 2. We share what we liked and disliked about the movie. Then we look at how the puritans are popularly conveyed versus what the scripture exemplifies in the lives of the apostles. We learn how to discern if a movie like this is appropriate for you and your family to watch. In the end, we’ll see that God is bigger than witchcraft, and that our job as Christians is to focus on what God is doing.

Scientists and theologians alike have ideas about what the Genesis 1 creation story is supposed to teach, how to interacts with the knowledge of modern science, and its relevance or irrelevance to us today. In John Walton's book The Lost World of Adam and Eve we get a clearer picture of what the Genesis 1 Creation story was supposed to communicate to the early readers and what it means for us today. We discuss this book and see what Ancient Near Eastern context can teach us about this creation story.

In an attempt to explain the nature of Jesus, both of Nestorius and Eutychius, along with their followers, committed different heresies. The debate over Jesus human and divine natures was settled at the Council of Chalcedon in 451 AD. Even still, versions of these heresies are present today. Listen to learn more about these heresies and how they impact Christianity in our day.

This week we explore the ancient heresy Gnosticism. The Gnostics believed that spiritual things were inherently good and physical things were inherently bad. This means that Jesus only appeared to be human since he could not actually become something that is inherently bad. Additionally, the Gnostics believe they have received a special divine revelation that reveals the truth path to salvation outside of sculpture. We explore Gnosticism and how these beliefs are still present today in our own world.

This week Leah and Andrew explore the history of denominations and their theological distinctions. We see that Christians share a core set of beliefs despite many differences. These core beliefs are what distinguish Christian beliefs from non-Christian beliefs. We explore some of the many differences, but argue that they in no way undermine the core message of Christianity. Specifically we talk in depth about some denominations differences within Wesleyan traditions.
The segment breaks feature giant squirrels and share important news about Apologetics Simplified. We will be taking a two week break between seasons. Join us again July 6, 2021 for season 7 which is all about heresy.

Fact Corrections from George:
Acts 13:1 says that Simeon was “called” Niger, NOT he was “from” Niger. Still, in the Greek-English Lexicon this name Niger means that he was of dark complexion.
Acts 11:26 is when believers were first given the name “Christians,” (NOT in chapter 13).

Trigger Warning: emotional abuse, family abuse, death
In this episode Leah and guest co-host Sarah Foster talk about what biblical forgiveness is and isn't. Sarah shares her story of learning to forgive those family members who hurt her most even after their deaths and without an apology.
Biblical forgiveness is not:
- Forgetting
- Simply letting it go
- Always preceded by an apology
- A one-time thing (usually)
Biblical forgiveness is:
- Releasing the offender of the debt owed you
- Freeing yourself to move on
- Mandated in scripture
- Exhibited by Jesus at the cross

In this episode Leah is joined by her guest co-host Greg Foster. They explore how the universe is fine tuned for life. They also deal with four common objections to the conclusion that fine tuning points to a Creator:
1. The multiverse theory does not need a Creator.
2.If the parameters of the world were different, human life would not exist, but other forms of life could still exist.
3. Earth is a fragile planet and is filled with organisms trying to kill us. Does that sound like God finely tuned it?
4. Fine-tuning only gets you as far as deism. It says nothing of the nature of that God.
We explore these objections and conclude that fine-tuning points to a distinctly personal creator.

In this episode Leah and Andrew explore the arguments for Young Earth and Old Earth Creationism. First, they talk about the Hebrew term yom (English: day) and the theological significance of Adam. Then Leah tackles a few of the arguments from Old Earth Creationism including a vast usage of the word yom in the Old Testament, evidence from the fossil record and Cambrian Explosion, and astronomical evidence. Andrew tackles the arguments for Young Earth Creationism including yom being understood as a 24 hour period, understanding Genesis as literal history, the Global Flood as cause for the fossil record, and more. While Christians have disagreed about exactly how God created the earth, they agree that God created it. Despite this agreement and the many disagreements, Leah and Andrew believe that an exploration into scripture, theology, and science is a fruitful endeavour as it allows the explorer to learn more about the creation and the Creator Himself.

Russell gives clarity, theological depth, and compassion in his explanations and reflections. In part 1, Russell shared his story, challenges, and blessings that come from being a gay Christian.

In this episode we explore how we experience God in nature. My husband Phill joins me in this exploration. Growing up near the woods and near the beach, he was able to see the beauty and magnitude of God all around him. We discuss how God’s glory is revealed in both beautiful things like the night sky and even in the more awe-inspiring and terrible moments of nature like natural disasters.
