PurePerformance Cafes are short interviews with practitioners and thought leaders from around the globe. We found it a great way to get introduced to a new topic or just learn what others are doing in their day-to-day job to contribute to better quality and high performing software.
Alois Mayr gives us a great overview of Istio, why it is such a hot topic right now and he covers the key use cases offered by its core component Envoy: traffic routing, deployment automation, secure communication, logging and monitoring.
Alois is Product Manager for Kubernetes at Dynatrace and therefore always trying to drive the product forward to support use cases our customers are demanding. This includes: what’s happening within Istio istelf? Does it impact latency between services? How about code-level and not just request level visibility? Our users also demand end user monitoring as well as the ability to support full stack and cross platform. In a recent meetup I saw Ernst Ambichl, Chief Product Architect at Dynatrace, talk about the Dynatrace architecture, how the requirements impacted some of the decisions and how Dynatrace now supports thousands of hosts on a single Dynatrace tenant (SaaS or Managed). I got to chat with Ernst to recap the highlights of the Dynatrace architecture and how he and his team uses Dynatrace in their daily development work to ensure a scalable, reliable and high performing monitoring solution for all Dynatrace customers, partners and trial users!

Live at OpenStack Summit, I got to chat with Peter Hack ( https://www.linkedin.com/in/peter-hack-84b9a5/ ), Senior Solution Engineer at Dynatrace. Peter discussed technical solutions with many of the attendees that stopped at the Dynatrace booth. Most attendees were focusing on infrastructure monitoring of OpenStack while it turned out that monitoring the containers, services and applications that run on OpenStack is as critical as ensuring a healthy infrastructure. In part 2 of our chat with David Jones (@davidlewisjones) of Dynatrace, we discuss two specific cases of performance during the Big Game. On the one hand, we saw optimizations being applied to Lady Gaga's sight almost up the time of her halftime show, ensuring great performance and a wonderful user experience. On the other hand, 84 Lumber's site crashed under the success of their ad and we discuss whether that crash was an outright failure, or did it lead to a greater success in their promotion efforts.

He told me that one of the biggest challenges in the last year was the growing number of production installations of Dynatrace and the increased number of support tickets we saw. In the first PurePerformance Café episode Bernd explained how his team has reduced cycle time of the code pipeline from 1w to 2h for core Dynatrace components. I wanted to learn more about how he sees the role of his team – the Test Automation Team – which provides the actual pipeline and the tooling that allows developers to push code faster through a pipeline. The most interesting comment he made was: “I am a Developer. Initially I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do Test Automation – but what we do here is developing an actual product and touching every piece of technology you can imagine. This makes me love my job!”. Got to chat with Bernd Farka (https://www.linkedin.com/in/bernd-farka-6a13a456/en ) – Integration Architect at Dynatrace – talking about how their Test Automation team was challenged with too long execution time of builds. Dynatrace provides Agents for multiple technologies and multiple platforms. That combination and other factors caused full test cycles to take up to 1w. Bernd explains how they broke up the code base into components, moved to Jenkins, Docker and Git and how these measures now allow them to give developers feedback within 2h instead of 1 week.

As many companies Coop choose a “New Stack” approach for building the new mobile platform. While MS Azure proofed to be a good choice it was clear that Operations and Development had to also think about how to monitor, understand and manage the additional complexity they just added. Electric Cloud started DevOps Enterprise Summit 3 years ago – working with Gene Kim and others helped them to transforming it into a key conference where large enterprises share their DevOps transformation stories.
In this chat we talk about pipelines, containers, microservices, cloud and how Electric Cloud helps companies to build pipelines in a technology and cloud agnostic way – including Dynatrace as one of the tools in the DevOps Toolchain to provide key metrics for the automated feedback loop.
Andi is at Star West in Anaheim (Disneyland). Besides joking with Mickey Mouse and Donald he also got to chat with Kirk Tuxhorn from Neotys about how load testing companies see and deal with the “Shift-Left Performance” movement. It is all about automation, integration and opening it up to a transforming set of performance engineers who are now embedded in the “DevOps / Continuous Delivery” Teams.
For some reason, Andi was in Madison, Wisconsin. He got a chance to catch up with Derek Abing (https://www.linkedin.com/in/derekabing ) from Sentry Insurance. They talked about the evolution of Dynatrace AppMon & UEM within Sentry Insurance. In particular, how it evolved from App Monitoring to Enterprise System Monitoring replacing several of their other tools they had in place such as SCOM, OpenView, SiteScope. Derek was also part of our Dynatrace AppMon & UEM 6.5 Early Access Program and sees this as a major step forward to make everyone a Performance Expert thanks to the enhancements in the Web Dashboards, Transaction Flow and the Automatic Problem Detection.
Andi is at JavaOne in San Francisco. In this episode of PurePerformance Cafe, Andi talks with Pieter Humphrey (@PieterHumphrey) from Pivotal talking about Platform as a Service (PaaS) and how the benefit of having developers focus on just writing code can also be a challenge as bad code can do a lot of harm in terms of PaaS and IaaS costs.

Alexander Scheran and Arno Huetter (@ArnoHu) share their insights on how Dynatrace Engineering changed over the last 10 years, how they managed to keep developers in the center of innovation, what culture means for them and how in general the day-to-day life at Dynatrace R&D looks like allowing them to rapidly develop and deploy software on a continuous basis. Their teams help their customers transform towards a new “DevOpsy” way to develop, test, deploy and run software. In the interview they reflected on what type of transformation their customers go through, how to start, where they struggle and how important monitoring and metrics are in that process.
Close to the end of the show it was time to have a quick walk through the Dynatrace Booth. Joking and talking with my colleagues about performance and about our different tool offerings such as Dynatrace Synthetic, AppMon & UEM, DCRUM or Ruxit. Bill and his company make the Internet 20 times faster -> just like PiedPiper – but in their case it is for real and not just a TV show! We get an insight into how their technology works which allows their customers to move data faster over the internet by optimizing package routes. It’s like “The Waze” for internet traffic. I saw it live – really impressive!

His big topic is: Quality of data that monitoring tools capture!
He discusses several use cases where monitoring granularity down to 1s is very critical – especially on the infrastructure side in order to identify intermittent problems. On a transactional level, it is important to see every transaction all the time – sampling won’t cut it as you can't do real root cause diagnostics if you don’t know the difference between good and bad. Challenge the tool – pick the one that gives you the data you need –don’t fall short with sampling!

Chatting with Dominic over a coffee on his current performance issue with their .NET Application: a memory issue their customers faced when running their apps. He talks about which diagnostics tools he used, where he struggled, and why he had to use different tools to actually find the problem.

Page Performance is very important for eCommerce and therefore for Grainger. Key items for them right now are to find the best metrics and define “actionable” alerting for Ops in case something goes wrong. We also discussed the “Shocking News” given by Tammy Everts and Pat Meenan who claimed that Render Time is not influential for conversion and user experience! WHAT does that mean for us now?
