7/22/16 Update: I figured out the logic of planning for the flamethrower. Not for the locals, the CIA, the press, for witnesses, or eliminating evidence. The burnt bodies gave Kahina the cover-story to excuse your lie in the eyes of Lois and Clark. Yes, Lex could have had Kahina lie about fire even if Anatoli didn’t burn bodies but then Lois and Clark would be on to Kahina immediately. They’d know she was lying. L&C might not be able to prove it, but it would get them investigating rather than doubting themselves. Lex ordered Anatoli to burn bodies because while L&C know Superman didn't use heat-vision, they could still believe that Kahina would come to that conclusion and testify about it.

A sentimental essay and subjective exploration of Clark's character arc and the birth of the superhero. Briefly revisiting Man of Steel to find a beautiful truth in Batman v. Superman we can all apply. Understanding and empathizing with Clark's burden beyond just bearing the weight of criticism. Refusing to take Superman the symbol for granted. Answers, insights, and commentary on:
A beautiful lie, the ugly truth, an ugly lie, a beautiful truth The beautiful truth beheld by Martha and Jonathan Jonathan always dreamed of the Superman What is the Superman? = What is the superhero? Erring on psychology rather than unerring icon Not taking "good is a conversation" for granted How dialogue (lines) sacrifices dialogue (conversation) Lois possibly picking the Superman over Clark Clark feeds, Darkseid hungers, Superman teaches all to feed themselves Clark counting the cost of the Superman, an uncertain symbol, with Martha Batman is not a superhero until Superman shows him Not a misunderstanding of Superman, pursuing an understanding of Superman Clark's consistent characterization on the hotel balcony Paradox of hope and protection challenges Clark's faith Showing how Clark works out his values, ethics, and morals Twice Lois says, "You came back." Lex knows he seeks to spread a lie Superman is one... Superman dies... the superhero is born Death protects Superman while expanding the superhero for his return The Justice League works out the logistics and expands the definition Superman was inspired by us You are not alone

Creative choices. The tornado scene intended a "cave of questions" to organically shape Clark's character, rather than 12-years in an actual literal cave. Exploring why the alternatives of Jonathan living, saving a child, or dying of natural causes frustrate this intention. How to find themes and how this scene fits-into and supports those themes. "If you wanted and expected sameness, perfection, tradition, and safety... why in the world would you ever invite an alien immigrant into your life? The alien immigrant represents something new, different, foreign, and challenging."
Answers, insights, and commentary on:

Judgment. How emergency decision-making works; Judging those decisions with justice, fairness, and reason. Compassion, empathy, grace, understanding, open-mindedness, and the willingness & imagination to entertain other perspectives definitely helps... but we systematically analyze the unconscious processes that account for fast, intuitive decisions with science and real-life examples. Primarily a diegetic analysis, we use seven questions as our framework:
Why didn't Martha let Hank out? Why did they go for the overpass? Why go back for Hank? Why didn't Jonathan send Clark? Why didn't Clark act? Why did Jonathan hold up his hand? Why did Clark abide by that?
Answers, insights, and commentary on:
The wisdom of knowing that you don't know and uncertainty The Dunning-Kruger Effect and the Impostor Effect Cognitive biases like hindsight bias, anchoring effect, priming, risk aversion, etc. Deliberate and elemental analysis for fair judgments Reasonable Person Standard with the same knowledge, experience, and circumstances Why don't we use a perfect person or optimal behavior standard? Answering mailbag questions largely defending the DCCU and first reactions to the Suicide Squad cast photo. This episode was recorded in two segments, the first just hours after watching Avengers: The Age of Ultron then as that was about to be published, David Ayer released our first look at the cast of Suicide Squad in costume, driving Doc to skip sleep, sanity, and stability to serve some speedy reactions in a subsequent second session. In this episode, we'll go over the purpose of the flashbacks, see what we can learn from the classroom scene, tackle whether Clark is a thief, look at the subjectivity of Superman, explore some of the themes of the film using a parable, and finally, we discuss that infamous answer: "Maybe." We've got some very short clips from D.J. Des Jardin, Diane Lane, and Dylan Sprayberry. Maybe we raise the following questions:
Why use flashbacks instead of a chronological structure? Is Superman a criminal? How did the editor show passage of time with the cuts? Why is Mrs. Ross visiting good for Clark's secret? How do legalism and principles differ? Will BvS feature flashbacks like MOS? How does the parable of the old and new garments apply to MOS? Why organically grow Superman from principles instead of retreading codified absolutes? What distinguishes the kids on the bus from the strangers under the overpass? Why did Jonathan say "maybe" to Clark? How does a teenage pregnancy help explain that answer? What does bar mitzvah have to do with Man of Steel?

We touch on the topics below:
Why do I say "reasonable minds will differ" every episode? What virtues did Clark show in this short scene? What is the significance of calling him "Greehorn" three times? How do the filmmakers show us Clark's limitations here? Why is a Superman with limits a good thing for storytelling? When does Clark show optimism, hope, humility, and possibly humor? Why did they have Clark yell when propping up the derrick? Why didn't Clark use super speed to rescue the workers? What did Clark's heroism cost him? What is the definition of heroism? What's the difference between classical, literary, and modern heroism? How to answer the criticism that Superman is not a "real" hero because he's strong and invulnerable? Do you have to be a paragon to be a hero? Why does this scene come before the flashbacks?

In this episode, we're looking at the secret identity. What's being protected, how it was maintained in Man of Steel, and if it can be preserved going forwards. We address all the questions below and hear what David Goyer has to say about the secret identity's future.
Why would the government not pursue the identity? Did Lois confirm that she knows Superman's identity? Did Lois's first article compromise Superman's identity? Did Lois's second article blow Superman's identity? Did Lois reveal the identity by yelling Clark at his farm? Did Superman expose his identity by giving up his ship? Did Superman expose his identity by giving his age? Did surrendering give away his identity? Did Superman expose his identity by saying he's from Kansas? Did The Battle of Smallville give away Superman's identity? Did the kiss give away Superman's identity? Does Perry know? Does Suicide Squad change things? What technologies can help keep the identity? How can the government, The Daily Planet, or Lex Luthor help keep the identity? Can the trope survive modern reality?
In this episode's mail bag:
"Did Zod realize he'd lose his powers by making Earth like Krypton? If he didn't how would he rule all those people with powers?" "Why did it have to be Earth? Why couldn't Zod have terraformed Mars or another planet?" The possibility that Superman's invulnerability can be controlled by his will, so if he wants to shave, he simply lowers his force-field to become like a normal human being. Did Warner Brothers mandate Snyder include Batman? Will Snyder be required to have Batman beat Superman and give Batman more screen-time?

In this episode, we listen to Zack Snyder talk about Superman, his approach to Man of Steel, and whether he is adapting Superman from The Dark Knight Returns. Then I finally get to some mailbag questions!
Some Superman fans are afraid that Superman is going to be disrespected by Batman at Snyder's hand in the upcoming Batman v. Superman. Some believe that the realistic tone of Man of Steel shows favoritism towards Batman. Some fear that Snyder prefers Batman over Superman and that alleged bias means building up Batman at Superman's expense. Some fear Snyder is trying to adapt The Dark Knight Returns into BvS and shoehorn its Superman into the DC Cinematic Universe. There are concerns that BvS will be a Batman-centric film and that Superman will be short-changed his development before Justice League.
While combing through hours of interviews for Man of Steel Answers Insight Commentary (MOSAIC), I've quickly put together some of Snyder's comments which would tend to dispel or address those fears. BvS is not a DKR adaptation. It's a film that will develop Superman to the point that we can get to a Justice League. After carefully cultivating a realistic tone for us to relate to Superman, Snyder isn't going to betray that for Batman. Snyder holds Superman in too high regard for that. In this episode's mail bag:
Does Batman getting top billing in the title matter? What about the Kryptonite rumors? Can DC catch up with Marvel? What about Lex Luthor on the Suicide Squad? Set photos of a Batman landmark event?

This is part one of a two part series where we cover Superman's potential weaknesses in Man of Steel. In this episode, we cover how the atmospheric weakness interacts with Kryptonian powers, the environment, and equipment:
We begin with the basic theory and parse what Jor-El tells us about Kryptonian powers. We then point out the problems with the basic theory as complicated by the Kryptonian helmets in Smallville. We then try to reconcile the issue with a few different theories.
While covering our topics, we will discuss and answer the following questions:
Why Superman's strength doesn't come from Earth's atmosphere. Why Zod wore a helmet in Earth's atmosphere, what he was breathing, and why he didn't suffer respiratory distress when he lost the helmet. A better analogy for the function of the powers than drinking. The function of Zod's helmets and why they didn't wear them during the attempt coup on Krypton. How the Prequel Comic is still a stumbling block.
