Tonight's special guest is Dr. Rivka Edery, Psy.D, LCSW, UK, a survivor of childhood abuse on every level, who is intimately familiar with the challenges of surviving, and thriving, in the aftermath. As a social worker, Rivka discovered that many of her clients had experienced childhood trauma, too, causing them to feel isolated, disconnected, and avoidant in adulthood. However, they struggled to recognize the impact of their experiences. "I understood their reluctance to confront their vulnerable inner selves. This is because I had also experienced a disconnection of my own." Rivka explains, "I experienced complex trauma as a child, and most acutely, I experienced attachment-loss trauma as my parents were mired in their own problems. They were completely unavailable, and I suffered in excruciating silence." She goes on, "I strongly believe in the transformative effects of twelve-step programs for those who have undergone trauma. A blend of sincere accountability, soul-searching, and being nurtured by a Higher Power can be a solution that is beneficial for all." She became a first time author specializing in trauma recovery and spirituality with her first book, 'Trauma and Transformation: A 12-Step Guide'. "I finally understood how my childhood experiences impacted my behavior, thoughts, and relationships, a relief that motivated me to uncover the root cause of my chronic disconnection and inner isolation." She concludes, "I've found healing for my inner child." She's been a mental health clinician and researcher over the last decade, and holds a doctorate in psychology. Rivka is longtime NAASCA family member and an active participant in the group.
