In today's thought-provoking episode, we delve into the poignant topic of the modern death of the American Dream. Join us as we explore how the once attainable vision of prosperity and success is now crumbling under the weight of hard economic times.
We begin by examining the skyrocketing cost of living, highlighting the housing crisis that has made homeownership a distant dream for many. We reveal how soaring mortgage rates and stagnating wages have locked an entire generation out of the housing market. We also discuss the staggering cost of higher education. With student loan debt reaching unprecedented heights, we discuss how the pursuit of a college degree has become a financial burden rather than a stepping stone to success.
Furthermore, we shed light on the plummeting marriage rates, discussing how economic instability is leading to a delay in major life milestones. Through personal stories and data, we explore the changing dynamics of relationships and family planning in the face of financial uncertainty.
Throughout the episode, we also touch on other vital aspects such as modern technology, job market challenges, and the mental toll of chasing a dream that seems ever out of reach. This episode is not just a discussion; it's a wake-up call to understand the evolving challenges of the American Dream and what it means for the future.

Social media has become an integral part of modern life, but it can have detrimental effects on the mental health of young men. One key reason is the constant comparison with others that social media encourages. Young men often see idealized versions of their peers' lives, which can lead to feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem. Moreover, the culture of seeking validation through likes and comments can create a dependency on external approval, which can be damaging to one's self-worth. Additionally, the exposure to unrealistic body standards and toxic masculinity ideals prevalent on social media can contribute to body image issues and unhealthy behaviors. So don't wreck your brain with social media. Tune in to find out how.

Proponents of NoFap believe that regular engagement in these activities can lead to various negative physical, psychological, and social consequences. By committing to NoFap, individuals hope to regain control over their sexual impulses and redirect their energy and focus towards more productive pursuits. Advocates claim a wide range of potential benefits, including increased self-esteem, improved mental clarity, enhanced motivation, and better relationships. However, it's important to note that the scientific community remains divided on the validity of these claims, and more research is needed to fully understand the potential impact of NoFap on individuals' lives. Ultimately, the choice to practice NoFap is a personal one, with its effects varying from person to person.
To start the conversation, the guys talk about their first time hearing about the movement as well as providing a formal definition and their preemptive opinions on it before delvin into the research. Moving on, they discuss more on why the movement became so popular including the recent self-improvement trend for guys before going through how the movement was founded. This causes Casey to explain the recent trend of dopamine control supported by creators like Andrew Huberman. Continuing the conversation, the guys discuss how chronic masturbation can affect your relationships both with partners and family before diving in to some statistics such as how often guys of different age groups masturbate/watch porn. This causes Josh to bring up men's recent decline in testosterone where the guys debate what has been the cause and go through some more statistics before describing the harms of chronic masturbation. Wrapping things up with some solutions, the guys discuss how to separate porn and masturbation habits as well as seeking caution with online gurus giving out fake promises, and where to find support online if you are having issues.

The mental health care systems in the USA and UK exhibit distinct approaches and challenges. In the USA, mental health care often relies on a mix of private insurance and public programs, leading to variations in accessibility and quality. While there's a range of services available, including therapy and medication, the costs can be prohibitive for many individuals. In contrast, the UK's National Health Service (NHS) offers a more centralized approach with free or low-cost mental health services.
Josh and Casey go into depth on the differences and what each system offers a young man in need of mental health treatment. To start, the guys give their first impressions on which system they think is bitter, including their perspectives before researching the differences and where they would rather live. Next, the guys do a more in-depth breakdown with some help from ChatGPT summarizing all of the differences between the two systems. Moving on Casey breaks down how and when the U.S. started taking mental health seriously at a government level before getting into some statistics on how much mental healthcare in the U.S. costs per person and as taxpayers. Switching gears to the U.K. Josh breaks down their healthcare setup including the proper process to see a therapist before breaking down some wait time and spending statistics. The guys end the episode giving their final opinions on which system is better for which people and if they would still prefer to stay in the U.S.

Dr. Volling is the Lois Wladis Hoffman Collegiate Professor of Psychology at the University of Michigan. Her research focuses on early social and emotional development, parent-child interaction, and family relationships. She has conducted extensive research on the role of fathers and children's development and continues to work with international collaborators, students, and post-doctoral fellows to advance research in father-child relationships.
Parents significantly shape men's mental health through upbringing and socialization. Positive, nurturing parenting can foster emotional resilience, self-esteem, and open communication, equipping men with effective coping skills. Conversely, parenting styles marked by emotional neglect or societal pressures can contribute to mental health struggles, highlighting the crucial role parents play in influencing their sons' emotional well-being. Josh and Casey ask Dr. Volling about these relationships.
To start, Casey asks Dr. Volling about her background including why she wanted to study parenting before Josh asks how fathers can affect the mental health of their children as well as the impact of fatherhood on young dads. Dr. Volling's remarks cause Casey to bring up if parental anxiety/depression can spread to children before the guys ask how having one vs. two parents can affect your mental health. Staying on topic, Josh asks if there are differences in single mothers vs. fathers before discussing why there has been an increase in single-parenting. Continuing forward Casey asks if we should encourage co-parenting and if there are any drawbacks to having unmarried parents. Switching gears, Dr. Volling gives her best advice on raising a child to fathers before answering how testosterone levels and traditional masculinity norms can affect fatherhood.

Young men today are becoming heavier. Sedentary lifestyles, characterized by increased screen time, less physical activity, and limited outdoor play, contribute to reduced calorie expenditure. Additionally, the proliferation of easily accessible, high-calorie, and processed foods has led to poor dietary habits and overconsumption. Of course, Josh and Casey touch a lot on stress and mental health issues and how they play a role. Lastly, we have societal changes, such as decreased social stigma around larger body sizes and changing cultural norms potentially contributing to a less significant concern about weight.
To start, Josh and Casey get into some of their best guesses on why the obesity epidemic has gotten so bad before sharing some of their own struggles with staying in shape. Next, Casey shares some statistics on the differences in obesity statistics worldwide before Josh discusses his European eating experience. Moving forward, the guys discuss the obesity/income relationship as well as how obesity can hurt your mental health. Continuing on the guys discuss potential ways to cure societal obesity before going over some statistics on the obesity/mental health relationship in adults and kids. Ending with solutions Josh and Casey go through their list of keys including getting your mental health in order, avoiding fad diets, starting small, and group fitness.

Modern dating apps are digital platforms that connect people seeking romantic relationships or casual encounters. They have become immensely popular due to their convenience, accessibility, and a vast pool of potential matches. However, they can be challenging for young men for several reasons. The apps often foster a competitive environment, where men may struggle to stand out among numerous other profiles, leading to fewer matches and responses.
Additionally, some apps tend to prioritize superficial factors, making it harder for young men to showcase their genuine personalities and interests. Finally, the prevalence of ghosting and casual attitudes towards dating can leave many young men feeling frustrated and disheartened.
On today's episode, Josh and Casey go deep on the subject. They discuss their own personal experiences while providing advice and insight on how they have found success on the apps and beyond. To start,

The Barbie and Oppenheimer movie openings mark a significant moment in the film industry, as they delve into two distinct yet interconnected themes that resonate deeply with audiences. "Barbie" challenges traditional gender norms, portraying the iconic doll as a symbol of empowerment and self-discovery for young girls worldwide (maybe a little too much). On the other hand, "Oppenheimer" is a biographical drama shedding light on the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the brilliant physicist behind the Manhattan Project. This film explores the psychological toll of scientific brilliance and the weight of responsibility on Oppenheimer's shoulders.
Both movies provide an opportunity to address men's mental health issues, as they depict the internal struggles faced by their male protagonists (some more than others, wink wink). By portraying vulnerability, the films encourage conversations about the importance of mental well-being and challenge the stereotype of stoic masculinity. This cinematic duo paves the way for an inclusive dialogue on mental health and promoting understanding for young men. Josh and Casey waste no time sharing their opinions on both films, messages they send to viewers, and what can be concluded regarding young men's mental health.

To start the conversation, Dr. Levant goes through his background and some of the research he has participated in. Next, Josh asks him to define the term he coined - Normative Male Alexithymia - meaning the consistent inability of men to convey their emotions. This causes Casey to askswhat the causes are, including any societal factors before Josh asks about its long-term effects and how it gets diagnosed/treated.
Switching topics, Casey brings up Dr. Levant's book "The Tough Standard", where he asks why it is easier for women to display their emotions. Next, the guys discuss the long-term effects of having the wrong ideas about masculinity including poor health and violence specifically toward women. Today we have on Dr. Alyssa Maryn. She is a postdoctoral researcher in the HOPELab at the University of Calgary. Her research focuses on sexual consent, stigmatizing responses to gender-based violence survivors, and online masculinities.
Today's online masculinities, such as incels, red pill, black pill, and discussions around sexual consent, have become hot topics in contemporary discourse. Incels, short for involuntary celibates, often harbor resentment towards women due to their perceived lack of romantic and sexual success. The red pill ideology stems from a metaphor in the movie "The Matrix" and promotes a worldview that challenges conventional gender norms and highlights men's issues in society. Black pill ideology takes a more pessimistic stance, embracing fatalistic beliefs about dating and society. In the realm of sexual consent, discussions have centered around establishing clear boundaries, promoting affirmative consent, and addressing issues related to consent education. These online movements and debates have sparked discussions about masculinity, gender dynamics, and the need for healthy, respectful relationships in today's society. To start Dr. Maryn goes through her background including why she started studying the incel community and sexual consent issues. Next, she gives some definitions on what the different color "pills" mean and their relation to incels before moving into the origins of the incel community. Moving forward Casey asks about the irony of masculinity requirements among incels before Josh asks if there are different groups/categories within the community and how they can break out of their struggles. Switching gears Casey brings up Dr. Maryn's other line of research about consent issues including what guys can be doing better today in that area before Josh asks how we can better handle legal cases of sexual consent in a better manner. To conclude Casey asks how guys can be more supportive of women when reporting sexual assault cases and break through the social stigma.

College has long been hailed as a crucial stepping stone towards success and prosperity. On today's episode, Dr. Julie Pearlman stops by. She is an ophthalmologist based out of the Chicagoland area. Her and Josh discuss all things eyes. Everything from glasses, to cataracts, to eye color-changing surgery, to glaucoma. Josh throws a lot of questions her way, and Julie does an amazing job of answering everything as simplistically and easy-to-digest as possible. Questions asked include: With so many eye drops available, how can a person choose the best one? Are glasses better than contacts? Are we ruining our vision from constantly staring at screens? Is blindness correctable now? And much much more!

Marcelo Ogata (aka @BugDreamer) is an underwater filmmaker and photographer. For over ten years, he has been to more than 40 different countries and has logged nearly 4,000 dives with his camera. He is completely self-taught and has had the privilege of working with incredible operations and brands while exploring the most biodiverse destinations on Planet Earth. He uses his camera as a weapon to help fight oceanic degradation and pollution.
Together, Marcelo and Josh dive (pun intended) into how he got started, favorite dive spots, tips for being a better underwater filmmaker / photographer, and so much more. They also nerd out (just a slight bit) on the various incredible corals and species seen in oceans around the world today. Even if you are a novice photographer or have no knowledge at all, you will most certainly learn some new things in today's episode. Marcelo is incredibly friendly, and he transfers that kind demeanor into his passion to help save our fragile oceans.
I HIGHLY recommend checking out some of his work, which is nothing short of spectacular. He can be found on Instagram (@_bugdreamer_) as well as his Youtube (@bugDreamer), Facebook (@bugDreamer), and of course his personal website (https://www.bugdreamer.com/).

Casey Eisenberg joins us again for another special episode of Shared Experiences. He is joined by his roommate, Abhi Yadava. Ironically, both Abhi and Casey work for the same company. They each share what their experiences (pun intended) has been like thus far. We break into the nuances of the traditional workplace setup and how things have evolved. We talk remote work, efficiency in the workplace, the supposed millennial laziness factor, and how things should be changed for the better.
Growing up with Indian parents, Abhi tells us what expectations came with that and Casey shares his own personal/cultural anecdotes as well. What pressures are there? How connected do you truly feel? What are the stereotypes? They had also traveled to India together, so they elaborate on the differences between life there and in the states as well as what they learned upon reflection.
This wouldn't be a Shared Experiences podcast if we didn't at least touch upon dating. So, we are of course given status updates on their love life's and talk about the difficulty of dating today.
Lastly, as a fun side segment, we discuss influencers, entrepreneurship amongst young people, and the growing impact of social media.

He is an oceanographer at NASA as well as the head of their OMG: Ocean's Melting Greenland mission. On top of all that, he is also a graduate of second city and one of the few scientists who tries to bring a softer, more comedic approach to global warming.
Why does climate change sometimes lead to more extreme cold? Is nuclear energy the way of the future? What is the response to climate change deniers? How much does deforestation contribute to global warming? All these questions and more are answered on today's episode.

Men's fashion often does not get enough attention. However, today, we are going to change that. Asif Somji is a personal men's stylist based out of Dubai. He knows the in's and out's of the fashion industry and how to have men looking their best. He decided to stop by and spread his wealth of knowledge.
Josh and Asif discuss the beginning. How an unfortunate battle with cancer turned into a blessing in disguise and helped Asif find his path. Transitioning into the state of men's fashion today, they discuss style and how it differs based on location. They determine if there is truly an overall look that represents "good" style. Moving onto fast fashion versus high end, they discuss the pros and cons of each, sustainability in fashion, and why designer brands should actually be given more credit. Should you invest in cheap men's clothes? How about designer men's clothes? It all gets answered. Lastly, they discuss how men can up their style game. Where to start if you have no idea. What materials to look for, how to incorporate colors into your wardrobe, and grooming habits that can turn any man into a style icon.
You can find Asif on Instagram (@styledindubai). Click the link to have a look. He also writes for The Rake Middle East, The Permberley Magazine, and Arte & LUSSO. So, if you have a chance, definitely be sure to check out some of his articles.

You may have heard of the infamous Venus Flytrap. Well, did you know that there are over 1000 different species of carnivorous plants! However, what exactly is a carnivorous plant? The official definition is "any plant especially adapted for capturing and digesting insects and other animals by means of ingenious pitfalls and traps." Some other species in existence are sundews, butterworts, pitcher plants, roridula, aldrovanda, and many more! I highly recommend a Google search to check out some of these amazing plants!
Today you are bound to learn loads more about them because our guest, Domonick Gravine, knows all about the subject. He is the founder and owner of RedLeaf Exotics: a specialized carnivorous plant nursery based out of Tennessee. Though, he specializes in growing a specific species known as Nepenthes or pitcher plants. His plants are huge and insanely beautiful.
Together, we shed light on how to grow these magnificent plants. We also get into what goes into running a nursery and growing a business online. Domonick grows many different variations of Nepenthes, so we talk about some of the crosses he has and the difference between the highland and lowland plants.
If you are interested in learning more about his nursery, RedLeaf Exotics, check out his website here. He sells a wide array of different plants! Also, be sure to check out their Instagram page as well as YouTube page!

Ah, roommates. Depending on the situation, they can be both a blessing and a curse. Let's look at the pros. The biggest being they help split the rent. For those trying to save money, having a roommate is by far the most economical option. Also, assuming you get along well with your roommate, it can be great to have a live-in companion. It's someone you can rely on for socializing and hanging out with. Now, as for the cons, i'm sure you are familiar. There's the chance that you live with somebody with whom you don't have anything in common with nor do you have similar living habits. Perhaps, they're messy, or they're too loud. Or maybe they aren't good about paying on time or even paying at all.
Obviously these are just some of the pros and cons. Stephanie and Josh dive deeper into the topic in today's episode. They touch upon the different forms of rooming situations such as when you're traveling with someone, living with a significant other, living with just a friend, etc. Each of these scenarios provides there own set of difficulties and comforts that are discussed. Of course, Stephanie and Josh also share their personal stories and experiences with sharing spaces, and they attempt to be unbiased in answering the question, "is it worth living or rooming with someone else"?
We would love to hear some of your shared spaces experiences. Have you had a bad roommate or a really good one? Let's hear your story. Please send an email to the address below with the subject heading "shared spaces".

Growing up today is not what used to be 50, even 30 years ago. Since the advent of the internet, cell phones, and social media, the way in which kids spend their time has changed dramatically. As a result, parents have had to adapt when it comes to parenting style leading to a generation of kids that have been overly-sheltered and coddled.
Now, it's still a complex topic. Arguably, when raising kids in the past, parents were too little involved in their children's activities and whereabouts. With parents being more mindful of their kid's doings, perhaps children today are less likely to get into trouble. There are definitely pros to parents being involved in their children's life, but just how much is too much? And are today's children and teens benefiting from this style of helicopter parenting? Those are just some of the questions Josh and Stephanie attempt to answer in today's episode.

There's no question Amazon has gone practically unchecked in recent years. The company's hold on the retail market has expanded its grasp farther than anyone could've possibly predicted. They currently own 41 subsidiaries and brands and are worth more than 1.7 TRILLION dollars! What does the future hold for "mom-and-pop" shops?
While there is no definitive answer, Josh and Stephanie certainly have their opinions. Stephanie has been trying her best to avoid using Amazon, but just how difficult is it? That prime membership really sucks you in: amazing movies, free two-day or even one day shipping, discounts, and so much more. The difficulty of breaking free from the amazon-sphere is no easy task. Josh and Stephanie also share their tips on how to avoid being completely sucked in and other alternatives to the platform.

In today's episode, Ben Rose helps simplify the process of financial planning and investing. Josh and him discuss allocating assets and resources as well as getting plans in place for both the near and distant future. They also get into the economy, as it stands today, and what Ben recommend's from a monetary standpoint. There will be a Part 2 in the not so distant future, where they will get a little more detailed and specific on these topics so be on the look out!
