These businesses generated just 1% of the total gross revenuefrom all classifiable companies that year, while roughly 14% of the Americanpopulation identified as Black.

In 2021, Black or African American majority-owned firmsprovided income for approximately 1.4 million workers, with estimated annualpayrolls of $53.6 billion. However, most Black-owned firms tend to be smallerenterprises. Two-thirds of these businesses had fewer than 10 employees, 13%had between 10 and 49 employees, and only 3% had 50 or more employees.Additionally, 16% reported having no employees at all (employment size isdetermined by the number of paid workers during the March 12 pay period accordingto the ABS).
