On this episode of the Connected Aviation Intelligence Podcast, Craig Foster, co-founder of Valour Consultancy, is the guest to discuss their new report, "The Market for IFEC and CMS Systems on VVIP and Business Aircraft – 2022."
The report estimates non-geostationary satellite orbit (NGSO) based systems (excluding those with legacy Iridium satellite phones) accounting for about 14% of the IFC terminal installed base by 2031.
“Since the last iteration of this report was published in 2020, SpaceX and OneWeb have made huge strides with the former signing up its first business aviation client for Starlink and the latter securing two industry heavyweights as distribution partners in Gogo and Satcom Direct," Foster says.

Shift5 is a cybersecurity company that focuses on protecting transportation and military infrastructure and assets from cyberattacks. The company was co-founded in 2018 by Weigand and Josh Lospinoso, a former US Cyber Army Officer who previously founded RedOwl Analytics, which was acquired by Raytheon/Forcepoint in 2018.
Weigand is responsible for executing Shift5’s long-term growth objectives. Prior to Shift5, Michael served eight years in the US Army as an Airborne, Ranger qualified, Infantry officer and was selected as one of the first Cyber operations officers.

On this episode of the Connected Aviation Intelligence Podcast, Ben Griffin, Vice President of Mobility Services, OneWeb, joins to discuss how the introduction of their Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite could provide a paradigm shift for in-flight internet service in the near future.
Last week, Eutelsat and OneWeb reached an agreement combine, bringing together satellite assets in Geostationary Orbit (GEO) and Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) for multi-orbit service. Since this interview was conducted on the day of this major announcement, the discussion does not focus on the Eutelsat-OneWeb agreement, however Griffin does provide some initial reaction on how the partnership might benefit their plans for in-flight connectivity (IFC) in the future toward the end of the conversation.
Griffin does however explain why their LEO constellation a perfect match for IFC service because of the amount of capacity the systems will make available, low latency, and global coverage, including over the polar regions. The OneWeb executive also provides perspective on how the company is evaluating the results of a recent test of their partially completed LEO network conducted on a Boeing 777.

On this episode of the Connected Aviation Intelligence Podcast, JP Floyd, Air Canada 787 Pilot and Senior Director of Compliance and Standards for Aero HygenX, joins to discuss autonomous aircraft disinfection technology.
Aero HygenX, is a Canadian tech start-up founded by pilots and experts in aircraft maintenance. The company has developed an autonomous robot called "Ray" that uses UV-C technology and motion-sensors to self-navigate the aircraft cabin while disinfecting air and surfaces throughout. Several airlines including Avelo, Ethiopian Airlines and Zambia Airways have adopted their robot disinfection technology.
Floyd also provides some perspective on some of the challenges of flying throughout the pandemic over the last two years as well as some of the goals Aero HygenX wants to achieve with its disinfection technology.

Michael Weigand is the chief growth officer of Shift5 Inc., a startup firm providing cybersecurity services across commercial and military segments of aviation, rail and other forms of transportation.
Weigand is a former U.S. Army cyber officer who co-founded Shift5 in 2019. During his live presentation given at the 2022 Connected Aviation Intelligence Summit, Weigand gives an in-depth technical overview of how connected aircraft systems work, why they’re vulnerable how airlines can develop an Aircraft Network Security Program.
The FAA first established its Aircraft Network Security Program in 2015 as an Advisory Circular for airlines that operate aircraft featuring connectivity. Weigand goes well beyond explaining how airlines can develop an ANSP into giving a detailed explanation as to how specific aircraft computers and data bus networks function, and why he believes there is no such thing as an “un-connected” aircraft for airlines anymore even with those that do not specifically feature passenger-facing connectivity onboard.
Below is an interesting observation given by Weigand during the presentation:
“I want to suggest that the industry not focus on the infotainment and passenger connectivity systems as the primary cyber threat to the aircraft. Candidly, from a security professional’s perspective I don’t care that the passengers don’t have Wi-Fi, because that system was degraded by a malicious actor. We care about flight safety first and foremost, it’s really the flight deck, it’s the green side of the aircraft that the conversation needs to be focused on, and I think previous security research done initially by the hacking and academia community has kind of mislead the industry to talk about what’s going on in the cabin and not in the flight deck.”

IAMA was first launched in 2019, and has grown its membership and subscribers to include Collins Aerospace, CarlisleIT, Envoy Aerospace, Etihad Engineering and Lufthansa Technik among others. The organization has been striving to improve the aftermarket supplemental type certification process for airlines and lessors since its inception. Schulz provides some progress updates after the first IAMA member completed the first IAMA audit process, an outlook for 2022 and some thoughts on how the process for acquiring, modifying and operating in-flight connectivity on aircraft continues to evolve.

On this episode of the Connected Aviation Intelligence Podcast, we discuss the ongoing work between the aviation and telecommunication industries regarding the deployment of 5G C-Band services and the associated interference issues that deployment presents for some aircraft radio (or radar) altimeters.
Since November, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and aviation industry leaders have been trying to establish a long-term solution that will allow 5G C-Band wireless services and flight operations to safely co-exist. The central issue on both sides of the 5G C-Band deployment results from the close proximity of the new 5G services from AT&T and Verizon in the 3.7-3.98 GHz band and the 4.2-4.4 GHz band where aircraft altimeters reside.
Witkowski, who chairs the Deployment Working Group of the IEEE Future Networks initiative, provides some perspective as to why the deployment of 5G C-Band services should not be a major concern for airlines, while also suggesting some possibilities for a long-term solution that could satisfy both the aviation and telecommunication sides of the debate.

John Wade, president of the commercial aviation division of Intelsat, joins the episode to explain how the company's introduction of software-defined satellites will revolutionize in-flight connectivity (IFC).
Intelsat signed a contract with Airbus to build two OneSat satellites operating in multiple frequency bands that will power their next-generation software-defined network earlier this year. John talks about how that technology will improve in-flight connectivity performance and also gives a status update on Intelsat's current install base in terms of connected commercial aviation aircraft.

Sentient Jet, a subsidiary of Directional Aviation, is well known within the private jet charter market for pioneering the jet card, which is purchased by customers with all-inclusive hourly rates. In May, Sentient expanded its jet card program beyond the U.S., offering jet card owners trips between New York and London, with more European destinations available from their new London office as well.
Collins also gives some perspective on the importance of in-flight Wi-Fi on flights booked by Sentient.

On this episode of the Connected Aircraft Podcast, Tiina Tissari, Vice President of customer experience at Finnair, joins to discuss some of the adjustments made by the Nordic airline over the last year under the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on air travel in Europe.
Finnair continues to operate a limited network and expects gradual passenger demand recovery to begin around the third quarter, according to their April 27 interim report. While there is still some uncertainty ahead for Finnair, like most European airlines, the carrier is re-opening passenger flights to New York after a break of almost one year and has maintained a relatively strong reputation with its passengers, holding a Net Promoter Score of 54 between January and March 2021.
Tissari provides some perspective on how Finnair is making its passenger experience more contactless with new digital technologies onboard and at the airport, among other changes that they're enacting.

On this episode of the Connected Aircraft Podcast, Sally Ng, associate professor for the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, joins to discuss the results of a study on in-flight cabin air quality recently published in the Journal of Indoor Air. Supported by Delta Air Lines, the research may be the first to comprehensively measure particle concentrations likely to be encountered by passengers from terminal to terminal.
To better understand the circulation of airborne particles, Delta approached Ng to conduct a study of multiple indoor environments, with a strong focus on air travel conditions. Using handheld instruments able to measure the total number of particles and their mass, Georgia Tech researchers examined air quality in a series of Atlanta area restaurants, stores, offices, homes, and vehicles — including buses, trains, and private automobiles.
They also trained Delta staff to conduct the same type of measurements in terminals, boarding areas, and a variety of aircraft through all phases of flight.
In all, the researchers evaluated measurements from 19 commercial flights with passenger loads of approximately 50 percent. The flights included a mix of short- and medium-length flights, and aircraft ranging from the CRJ-200 and A220 to the 757, A321, and 737.

On this episode of the Connected Aircraft Podcast, Cam Murphy, the managing director of FEAM, joins to discuss the airline maintenance and engineering services provider's experience expanding its U.S.-based operations throughout 2020 and into early 2021 under the many regulatory and operational challenges posed by the impact of the COVID-19 crisis.
Holding an MBA in Aerospace and Defense, Murphy has helped institute many of the organizational and cultural changes at FEAM including; building brand awareness, instituting employee and customer relationship and retention strategies, and upgrading the company’s IT infrastructure. FEAM was founded in 1992 by his father, Fred Murphy.
Their latest expansion includes a new hangar added at Miami International Airport. According to Murphy, the business has also been seeing an increase in demand for maintenance services from air cargo operators, many of whom are preparing to start transporting or already are flying with COVID-19 vaccines.

Volare, based at London Oxford Airport, provides chartered flights, refurbishment, engineering, and management among other aircraft services. According to Dryden, in 2020, Volare saw demand for business travel drop by 80 percent, while demand for family and vacation travel increased by about the same amount.

Van der Meer discusses the deployment status and schedule for VistaJet's new in-flight connectivity technology, LuxStream, across their global fleet of private jets. Vista Global – the parent company of VistaJet and XO - became the launch customer for LuxStream in September 2019, bringing in-flight Internet speeds of up to 25 Mbps in the United States and 15Mbps globally via SES's managed Ku-band satellite network exclusively to business aviation operators.
The current VistaJet fleet includes 60 aircraft based in Malta with 29 total Global 6000s and the remaining spread across Challenger 850s, 605s, and 350s. In the U.S. they have a fleet of Global 5000s and eight Challenger 350s along with the XO fleet of Citation Xs and Challenger 300s.

On this episode of the Connected Aircraft Podcast, Michel Bielecki, a doctor at the University of Zürich Centre for Travel Medicine, WHO Collaborating Centre for Travellers' Health, Epidemiology Biostatistics and Prevention Institute, and Patrica Schlagenhauf, also a professor at the University of Zurich discuss their recent narrative review of the air travel industry's efforts to prevent the spread of COVID-19 on airplanes and at airports.
Their review, entitled, "Air travel and COVID-19 prevention in the pandemic and peri-pandemic period: A narrative review," was recently published in the Journal of Travel Medicine and Infectious Disease, and aims to assess the status quo of air travel measures in the context of COVID-19 as of October 2020 and to examine their scientific basis if appropriate.

On this episode of the Connected Aircraft Podcast, David Fox, vice president of in-flight and connectivity services for Deutsche Telekom joins to discuss how his company has been expanding its presence in supporting cabin Internet and mobile network access in-flight across Europe and other regions of the global commercial airline market.
With David, we discussed how Deutsche Telekom is expanding its presence in providing in-flight connectivity and services for airlines, and David provides some perspective on how they’re trying to make the process for airline passenger journeys transitioning from one airport, to the aircraft and then on to the destination airport and the way that passengers stay connected in each of those phases.
We also ask David how Deutsche and others are trying to make that process more seamless, as well as some other in-flight connectivity related topics they’re working on.

On this episode of the Connected Aircraft Podcast, Jack Mandala, CEO of Seamless Air Alliance, joins to discuss the organization’s latest in-flight connectivity standard, “OpenIFC” Release 2.
Seamless Air Alliance was established in 2018 by Airbus, Airtel, Delta, Sprint and OneWeb as a coalition with the goal of driving down the price and increasing the availability of in-flight connectivity service, technology and upgrades. Following its publication of the world's first inflight connectivity (IFC) standard earlier this year, Seamless Air Alliance, a global community of airlines and technology leaders driving solutions to advance inflight connectivity, today announced the completion of Seamless Release 2.0.
This latest Release defines the information provided by each network component, enabling suppliers to design and build OpenIFC products using the modular architecture and open interfaces from its first release.

On this episode of the Connected Aircraft Podcast, James Pavur, an Oxford University cybersecurity researcher and PhD student provides insights into his experience performing "satellite eavesdropping" on aircraft in-flight Internet data.
Pavur was part of a team of European experts that used home television equipment and specialized software to enable satellite eavesdropping on in-flight passenger Internet data, as Pavur demonstrated during a live presentation at Black Hat 2020. The team’s setup included a Selfsat satellite dish with a TBS-6983/6903 PCIe card/Digital Video Broadcast-Satellite tuner computer card.
Using the dish and tuner in combination with a program called EBS Pro that enables personal computer users to find and view satellite television feeds, Pavur's team was able to analyze 4 terabytes of data on signals from 18 satellites in geostationary orbit.

On this episode of the Connected Aircraft Podcast, Peter Skaves, chief scientist and technical advisor for advanced avionics for the Federal Aviation Administration gives some of the agency's latest guidance on how commercial airlines can protect connected systems onboard.

Skaves has been with the FAA for 29 years, publishing numerous white papers on issues such as aircraft systems information security protection, systems safety, and development assurance processes, software, electronic flight bag, communication systems, and Technical Standard Orders (TSO) for security consideration.
"We believe that the greatest threat is the exploitation of aircraft electronic access points via public networks such as the internet or counterfeit computer integrated circuits," Skaves said during the presentation.

The discussion provides some unique insight into how Intelsat will move forward with its plans to close an acquisition of Gogo's commercial aviation IFC business, while Iriarte also provides some perspective on why his airline is keeping the Wi-Fi service active across its entire fleet despite the economic impact of COVID-19 forcing a major internal restructuring.

Barnett recently published a study using recent flight, COVID-19 positive cases and other data and research results to approximate the probability that an air traveler in coach will contract COVID-19 on a US domestic flight two hours long, both when all coach seats are full and when all but middle seats are full.

On this episode of the Connected Aircraft Podcast, Richard Koe, managing director, WINGX Advance GmbH provides insights into what the up and down global flight activity in July across business and commercial aviation means for the industry’s COVID-19 recovery.
According to WINGX`s weekly global market tracker, global business aviation traffic saw an overall 20 percent decline compared to 2019, an improvement on the 30 percent deficit in June year-over-year, but a step backwards from mid-July when activity was approaching 85 percent of last year´s volumes.

On this episode, we’re joined by Tyler Stubblefield, vice president of flight operations for XOJET.
Stubblefield provides some perspective on how business aviation operators such as XOJET have seen new interest in private air travel amid the drastic changes to the way commercial airlines operate due to the COVID-19 global pandemic. XOJET has also adjusted cleaning processes and logistics for arriving at a fixed based operator (FBO) airport and chartering a flight.
According to Stubblefield, membership-based private aviation operator also recently switched its headquarters from California to Florida and has not grounded any aircraft or removed any pilots from service in an effort to remain ready for what they feel will be a nearer term recovery in business jet travel demand.

Jet It is a business aviation operator launched in 2018 that operates a fleet of HondaJet Elite aircraft and has introduced a unique business model to the private travel market.
The company uses days rather than hours to sell shares of aircraft to customers, and this allows owners to only pay for the direct operating costs of the aircraft. That equates to $1,600 an hour.
Jet It currently operates a fleet of five HondaJet Elites, with plans to add more throughout the rest of the year.

During the 2020 Global Connected Aircraft Cabin Chats series, Azman Ahmad, GM Product Management, Saudia Airlines, joined program chair Mark Holmes for a discussion on how he sees the airline passenger experience changing amid the impact of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.
Saudia’s in-flight entertainment offerings include more than 4,000 hours of content and the airline also features IFEC managed through its UON service. The Middle Eastern airline operates a fleet of 142 aircraft, including such models as the Airbus A320 and Boeing 787.

On this episode of the Global Connected Aircraft Podcast, we caught up with Jean-François Parent, head of engineering and chief engineer for the Airbus Canada Limited Partnership’s A220 program.
The chief engineer explains how the A220 and all Airbus airliners are designed to prevent air contamination under normal operating conditions.
When at cruising altitudes, the cabin air is a mix of fresh air drawn from the outside of the aircraft and passed through High-Efficiency-Particulate Arrestors (HEPA) filters designed to remove particles in the air down to the size of microscopic bacteria and virus clusters.
The air that is supplied to aircraft lavatories and cargo compartment is evacuated overboard, preventing any return of contaminated air in the cabin. The forward and aft cabin air is distributed from the top of the cabin through airflow channels integral to the passenger baggage overhead bins. It is extracted at floor level. There is no flow forward or rearward along the cabin.
As airline passengers begin to slowly get back on aircraft, this discussion can help explain how a modern airplane keeps their cabin air clean and refreshed. New and innovative technologies featured on the A220 are also discussed in this episode.

On this episode of the Global Connected Aircraft Podcast, we caught up with Scott Borton, director of national air logistics for Quest Diagnostics, one of the leading medical lab services companies in the United States.
In addition to the medical labs and patient locations managed by the company, Quest Diagnostics also operates a fleet of 25 total aircraft, including the Pilatus PC-12, Beech B58 Baron and Embraer Phenom 100. Right now, these aircraft are flying about 88 flights a day to 63 different locations across the U.S., transporting some very precious cargo, including COVID-19 specimens and samples.
Their goal is to deliver collected samples to the company’s labs by 2 AM, so that diagnostics can be complete and results are ready by 8 AM the next morning.
We also asked Scott about the logistics of supporting a 20-minute turnaround time for aircraft that make multiple stops throughout the day, and whether or not his aircraft feature any type of in-flight connectivity.

On this episode, we caught up with Max Conrady, Senior Vice President Cargo, Fraport AG to discuss what it’s like to manage air cargo operations at one of Europe’s busiest airports during a global pandemic.
While the travel restrictions from the outbreak of the COVID-19 coronavirus have caused a dramatic reduction in the number of passenger flights occurring right now, the volume of air cargo operations has remained relatively similar to the levels they were at during this time a year ago.
According to Conrady, who oversees all of the air cargo operations at Frankfurt Airport, they’re still managing about 250 air cargo flights per day. The Fraport executive also discusses how they’re managing parked aircraft and some of the regulatory and data exchange challenges they’re dealing with.

On this episode, we caught up with Luuk van Dijk, co-founder of Zürich, Switzerland-based startup and provider of autonomous flight control technology, Daedalean. On April 1, 2020, Daedalean and the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) jointly published a report entitled, “Concepts of Design Assurance for Neural Networks.”
The report is the result of 10 months of work between EASA and Daedalean. According to EASA, the jointly published report is the result of a 10-month collaborative project between the two organizations with the goal of investigating the challenges and concerns of using Neural Networks (NN) in aviation.
Some of the results of the project will serve as a key enabler towards the certification and approval of machine learning in safety-critical applications onboard aircraft.
During our interview with van Dijk, he explains the differences between artificial intelligence, machine learning and how neural networks is effectively a subset of these concepts. The former SpaceX engineer also discusses some of the near term use cases of neural networks within aviation, including how they have been flight testing the use of one for image recognition, object detection and visual landing systems over the last few years in drones, air taxis and manned aircraft.

Orbis International operates the world’s only Flying Eye Hospital, an MD-10 converted into an ophthalmic hospital and teaching facility that flies to developing nations around the world to bring training local doctors and nurses.

California-based JSX, formerly JetSuiteX, is the launch customer for SmartSky’s upcoming air to ground in-flight connectivity network.
The public charter provider operates more than 330 flights out of seven airports, with a fleet of Embraer 135s and 145s. JSX is a subsidiary of private charter JetSuite, and focuses on providing short haul flights at prices that compete with commercial airline business cabin fares.
SmartSky expects its air to ground network to become fully operational by the end of the year, and when they do, JSX will be the first operator flying with their connectivity onboard.
We caught up with Angela Vargo, vice president of marketing at JSX, to learn what they’ve been doing to prepare for the launch of the new high speed in-flight connectivity technology.

More than 20 companies are members of the Seamless Air Alliance, working together to establish open architecture standards for in-flight connectivity, including the likes of Airbus, Sprint, Delta Air Lines and Etihad Airways.
A research study released by SAA at this year’s World Mobile Congress in Barcelona concluded technology standardization would increase the value of the in-flight connectivity market by $11.4 billion. In our discussion, Mandala explained their open standards work for in-flight connectivity and the new Hotspot 2.0 Wi-Fi services they launched and demonstrated at the 2019 Paris Air Show.

Ruben Santamarta, a cyber security researcher with IOACTIVE, used a "backdoor" vulnerability to demonstrate his ability to hack into an in-flight commercial airplane's satellite internet modem.
We discuss the demonstration with Ruben and his IOACTIVE colleague Josep Pi Rodriguez. The cyber experts discuss how the flaw that allowed the hack to occur was resolved by the industry.
