What does it really take to retire at 30?
In this REWIND episode of Money Noticias, Sunem and Israel sit down with Purple, the creator of APurpleLife.com, who achieved financial independence and retired in 2020—at just 30 years old.
Purple, a Black woman who worked in marketing, began documenting her journey to financial independence in 2015. By strategically tripling her income through job hopping and cutting her expenses in half using domestic geo-arbitrage, she reached FI faster than most—without sacrificing her quality of life.
Today, she lives a nomadic lifestyle, traveling the world and spending her time birdwatching, stargazing, writing, and redefining what “retirement” can look like.
This episode challenges the idea that early retirement is boring, unrealistic, or joyless—and offers a refreshing, practical look at how flexibility and intentional living can accelerate your path to financial freedom.
What you’ll learn in this episode:
- What financial independence really means—and how to define your “enough” number
- Why job hopping can be one of the fastest ways to increase income
- How domestic geo-arbitrage can lower costs while improving your lifestyle
- What life after early retirement actually looks like (spoiler: it’s not boring)
- How to balance aggressive saving with enjoying your life now
- Why staying open to change can unlock unexpected opportunities
If you’re curious about early retirement, financial independence for women, or building wealth in a nontraditional way, this episode is a must-listen.

125: In this episode, hosts Sunem and Israel welcome Lucia Diaz. Lucia is a published illustrator and co-author of Viva Latina, created in collaboration with Sandra Velasquez, the visionary CEO of Nopalera.
As a sought-after public speaker, she has delivered impactful talks for prestigious brands, including American Express, Target, WBENC, We All Grow Latina, and Latinas in Tech.
In her work as an illustrator, she has partnered with iconic global brands such as DIOR, Tiffany & Co., CHANEL, Giorgio Armani, SAKS, DVF, and Carolina Herrera, elevating events through live sketching and art that captures the essence of culture and elegance.
Lucia Diaz's passion for illustration stems from a deep desire to ensure Latinas see themselves authentically represented. Growing up, the only Latina she encountered in history books was Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor. This lack of visibility inspired her to take action. Studies indicate that Latinas constitute only 3-5% of the figures featured in U.S. history textbooks—a statistic that does not reflect their profound contributions to America’s legacy.
Through her art, storytelling, she illuminates the power of representation. Whether creating inspiring illustrations or leading dynamic workshops, her mission is to celebrate Latinas, amplify their voices, and ensure young girls—like her goddaughter—see themselves in stories of wisdom, strength, and achievement.

111: In this episode of Money Noticias podcast, hosts Sunem and Israel Tovar are joined by Alfredo Matos.
Alfredo started pursuing big goals early in his youth. He attended CROEM, a public boarding school for talented students from which he graduated high school at 16. He started engineering school immediately in Mayagüez but he paused college to join the Army as a Guardsman. He attended boot camp at 17 and the Army deployed him during the Global War on Terrorism, becoming a veteran at 18 years old.
In his mid 20s, after graduating engineering school, Alfredo moved from Puerto Rico to Georgia and started his professional career in the nuclear industry, with about $45,000 in debt. After a while leading a typical suburban life in the Atlanta metropolitan area, Alfredo realized something was missing. He had a great income, but there was no freedom. Alfredo found that he and his wife had fell in a trap called “the rat race”. The more money they earned, the more they would spend, and most people around them were deeply in debt. But they had both come from low income families and knew that they wanted to change their family tree. Alfredo started budgeting, eliminating debt aggressively, investing in real estate and investing in the stock market. This resulted in achieving "Coast Financial Independence" in their mid-thirties. When Alfredo started sharing with others what had worked for them, more and more people asked him for one-on-one help. He fell in love with the opportunity to change people’s lives through financial empowerment and eventually left engineering to become a full time financial coach.
In 2024, they moved back to Puerto Rico where Alfredo now supports small business owners helping them develop and retain talent through his workplace financial wellness program called “Invierte En Tu Gente”.
