GLP-1 Medications: Questions My Patients Ask Me (Part I)
In this episode of the Metabolic MD Podcast Dr. Paul answers the questions on Ozempic, Wegovy, Monjauro, and the other GLP-1 medications that he is most frequently asked – both by current patients, or by people thinking about starting them. Questions answered include: Who is eligible to use these medications? Who should not be on these meds? What are the most common side effects? How bad are they? How can the dosing be customized to my particular situation? Are these medications addictive? What is the best diet to follow while being prescribed these medications? Dr. Paul answered these and many more questions that he is frequently asked by patients on GLP-1s, or people who are thinking about starting them.
Low Carb diets are great for preventing prediabetes and diabetes, and, of course, losing weight. For nearly 10 years Dr. Paul has helped patients “go low carb”, to reverse insulin resistance, and avoid the blood vessel diseases caused by high blood glucose (kidney failure, strokes, heart attacks, etc.). But low carb diets are almost always high in fat. Does eating low carb mean a higher cholesterol level will follow? Usually not, but occasionally a higher fat diet will result in a higher cholesterol level. Is that higher cholesterol then a problem? In this podcast Dr. Paul is joined by Lipidologist (cholesterol expert) Dr. Richard Saxon. They discuss how low carb, higher fat diets can be the solution for not only overweight/obesity but many metabolic health issues like prediabetes and high blood pressure. They also discuss how in that minority of patients who have preexisting cholesterol issues, or cholesterol issues exacerbated by low carb, higher cholesterol can be effectively evaluated and treated.
