"Grief is hard work. It is a lonely journey sometimes. People do avoid it because we want to shy away from pain. But avoiding your grief doesn't help at all."In this episode, I talk with Joan Kpandei, a certified advanced grief specialist from Nigeria. Kpandei is a certified grief-informed professional, grief and bereavement counselor, and Christian counselor with an impressive array of credentials.Kpandei hosts a weekly online talk show called The Grief Show, which seeks to create awareness around grief, its effects, and guiding people to move forward. She works with corporations and churches, facilitating training sessions on grief and loss, and provides one-on-one counseling for grieving staff and clients. Kpandei is also the founder of the Gem Sisters Club, a nonprofit organization that inspires, encourages, advocates, and restores hope to the brokenhearted and emotionally wounded. Additionally, she has written a book titled "Give Your Pain a Voice: The Power of Talk," which highlights the importance of communication in the grieving process.During the interview, Kpandei shares her personal journey into this important work. After the loss of her mother in 2019, she found herself navigating her own grief and discovering a calling to help others who are struggling with loss. Kpandei emphasizes the need to process grief rather than avoiding it, as grief is a natural response to love and something we all experience in life. She explains the different types of grief, including anticipatory grief and ambiguous grief, and how they can impact individuals and organizations. Kpandei provides valuable insights on supporting those in grief, such as simply showing up, taking cues from the griever, and avoiding unhelpful platitudes. She also addresses the common misconception that grief follows a linear path, highlighting the oscillating nature of the grieving process."People are not comfortable around grief. They shy away because they don't know what to say. But I say, just show up with your presence. Silence speaks. Your presence is golden at that time."This episode will help anyone who has experienced loss or is supporting a loved one through grief. Kpandei's compassionate and insightful approach offers a roadmap for navigating the complex emotions of grief with grace and resilience. Whether you're dealing with the loss of a loved one, the end of a relationship, or any other significant transition, Kpandei's wisdom can help you find the courage to confront your pain and ultimately emerge stronger. To learn more about Joan Kpandei and her work, you can visit her on Instagram or check out her book "Give Your Pain a Voice: The Power of Talk." Life is full of unexpected twists and turns, and for many women, these transitions can be particularly challenging. Whether it's going through a divorce, becoming an empty nester, or experiencing menopause, these moments can leave us feeling invisible and unsure of our next steps. In my latest podcast episode, I had the privilege of speaking with Karen Rae, the inspiring founder of Fave Lifestyles, who has navigated these very challenges and come out stronger on the other side.Karen's journey is a testament to the power of resilience and self-discovery. After 27 years as a stay-at-home mom, Karen faced the daunting reality of divorce and living on her own for the first time. She found herself at a crossroads, unsure of how to move forward. But rather than retreating into the shadows, Karen chose to embrace her vibrancy and create a space where women like her could be celebrated and supported."I was not visible in my own life. And it wasn't anything to do with the divorce or anything else. I was not showing up for me, and I wasn't sure what that was going to look like."Fave Lifestyles, the community Karen founded, is built on the mission of celebrating 1 million women. This initiative aims to ignite courageous voices by honoring the brave stories of women worldwide. It's about inspiring hope for today, tomorrow, and future generations, and showing women that they are not alone in their journeys. One of the most powerful moments in our conversation was when Karen shared a pivotal experience with a counselor. He asked her to write a single word that described how she felt in her life and marriage. Both Karen and the counselor wrote the same word: invisible. This realization was a turning point for Karen, prompting her to ask herself how she could show up in her own life. It was a moment that gave her chills and set her on the path to reclaiming her visibility and vibrancy."My son came to me and he goes, 'Mom. And he held out his hands and he goes, 'Mom, I have a gift for you.' And I looked in his hands, I said, 'There's nothing there.' And he goes, 'Mom, it's the gift of opportunity. So you can see all the possibilities in life.'"Karen's story is filled with moments of bravery and courage. From starting a web show to creating a supportive community for women, she has continuously stepped out of her comfort zone to build something meaningful. Her son’s gift of “opportunity” further fueled her mission to see all the possibilities in life and to help other women see them too.In our discussion, Karen also emphasized the importance of self-love and forgiveness. She talked about how working with coaches and counselors helped her peel away the layers of grief and self-doubt, allowing her to move forward with a clear heart. This journey of self-discovery is ongoing, but Karen's story is a beautiful reminder that we all have the power to rewrite our narratives."I have the freedom of choice, how I love on other people and how I love them, and nobody, through any circumstance, can ever take that away. I get to choose if I love them or not."If you're navigating a challenging transition in your life, Karen's story will undoubtedly inspire you. Her message is clear: you are not alone, and you have the power to find your glow. Join us in this heartfelt episode as we celebrate the bravery and courage of women everywhere. In this episode, I talk with Jennifer Soames, a traumatic brain injury survivor and advocate who is passionate about helping others affected by TBIs get the information, care, and support they need to live their best life.Jennifer Soames is a former holistic health practitioner and yoga instructor who has over a decade of firsthand experience navigating life with a chronic, debilitating condition after sustaining a traumatic brain injury in a horseback riding accident. She understands the pain, grief, frustration, and loneliness that can come with losing one's sense of self and purpose due to a life-altering trauma. However, Jennifer has also experienced the post-traumatic growth that can arise from these challenges."I was angry that I had no control over any of it, and that all this had upended my life and really affected my brain, my body, my business, my family. Like, all of these things that I just had no say in, and I had no culpability in either."During our interview, Jennifer shares the harrowing details of her TBI journey - from the initial concussion and car accident that followed, to the gradual realization that her "mild" injuries were actually causing debilitating long-term effects. She candidly discusses the difficult decision to close her thriving holistic health practice, as well as the profound grief she experienced during that process. Jennifer also opens up about the forgiveness work she's done with me, including overcoming deep-seated beliefs of not being "enough" that had plagued her for most of her life.I believe this episode is a must-listen for anyone affected by traumatic brain injuries, chronic illness, or life-altering disabilities. Jennifer's raw honesty and hard-won wisdom provide a beacon of hope, reminding listeners that it is possible to create your "best possible life," even if it looks dramatically different than what you envisioned. Jennifer and I also discuss valuable resources like the Brain Injury Association of America and Jennifer's own book, "Head of Hope: A Resource and Empowerment Guide for Living and Thriving with a Traumatic Brain Injury.""One myth is that you have to lose consciousness. So people are like, oh, but I didn't get knocked out. Well, guess what? You don't have to be knocked out or lose consciousness to have a brain injury."For those struggling with the profound loss and grief that accompanies major health challenges, I feel this episode offers a compassionate exploration of how forgiveness can be a transformative tool for reclaiming one's power and self-worth. Jennifer's journey is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, and a reminder that with determination, support, and self-compassion, it is possible to not only survive, but to truly thrive after unimaginable trauma. To learn more about Jennifer Soames and her work, visit her website at HeadofHope.com. Do you have trouble setting healthy boundaries? This is an extremely common challenge, especially when it comes to family. In this episode, I talk with my colleague Kim about navigating boundaries with family members who may not respect or understand them. As Kim and I discuss, setting boundaries with family can be particularly challenging due to the emotional entanglement and ingrained roles we play."I feel like sometimes we even work harder on relationships outside the family dynamic, we'll work harder to save a friendship. We'll work harder to save a working environment than sometimes we do with the family."During our conversation, Kim and I dive deep into the psychology behind why we often struggle more with setting boundaries with family versus other relationships. We explore the fear of losing love or acceptance, as well as the tendency to fall back into old roles and patterns. Kim and I provide practical tips for getting clear on your values and what you want the relationship to look like, then communicating those boundaries in a calm, compassionate way."It's almost like going back and trying to correct your teacher. That would be difficult, right? And so, maybe that's why we sometimes do walk away a little quicker because we think that we can't tell the teacher they were wrong."I believe this conversation can help anyone who has difficulty setting boundaries with family members, whether it's overbearing parents, critical siblings, or other relatives. Kim and I offer a thoughtful, nuanced approach to this common challenge, emphasizing the importance of self-awareness, forgiveness, and maintaining connection where possible.Be sure to leave a comment and let us know your thoughts on this episode - Kim and I are eager to continue the conversation and provide the support you need. Thanks for listening, and please share with someone you know who might benefit, I appreciate it.Resources:Your FREE Forgive Yourself resources: https://brendareisscoaching.com/podcast-resource-optin/Are you struggling with a situation or a person in your life? Today, I address a question I recently received, "How do I know I have fully forgiven someone?" As a forgiveness coach, I share my insights on the misunderstood nature of forgiveness and its power to transform lives. And this question is quite common.Through my own healing journey, I've developed a process combining psychology and radical forgiveness principles. This approach helps people release past pain and reclaim emotional freedom. Forgiveness is not forgetting, but learning from experiences to avoid repeating harm."There is a way that we can learn from it. So, we don't stay stuck in the pain of that memory, guiding us to move forward without feeling the chains of attachment to the past." I discuss identifying unhelpful beliefs and patterns in order to break free from them. Drawing from my life, I demonstrate the value of separating emotions from memories themselves. I also touch on subconscious memory's role and the relief forgiveness brings. This compassionate discussion is perfect for anyone struggling to forgive betrayal, abuse, or other trauma. Listeners will gain clarity on forgiveness, learning to process recurring thoughts, alleviate anger and anxiety, and renew their sense of purpose."It doesn't make what they did right, it doesn't condone their behavior, it doesn't mean you reconcile… it means that you love yourself enough to do the work for you, not for them."Visit my website and social media for more resources on forgiveness. Subscribe to receive personalized videos addressing your specific questions. Join me in understanding the power of forgiveness worldwide. When we understand its true nature, we gain the key to emotional liberation."Remember, when we forgive ourselves and heal ourselves, we create a forgiving world." In this episode, I share my journey of self-forgiveness after caring for my husband with dementia. Drawing from the transformative process I underwent, I offer guidance for you if you are also navigating your own path to self-forgiveness."Forgiving yourself is an act of self-love and growth." Regret doesn't have to be all bad. It can be motivating too. Regret can help us overcome past mistakes and take action on them. - Brenda ReissUncover the impact of regretRegret, a common emotional response, has a deep impact on our lives. This distressing emotion can be derived from various decisions we've made or failed to act upon. It's a damaging emotional state that brings about feelings of disappointment, remorse, and guilt, ultimately affecting our physical, emotional, and mental health.Explore the link between regret and self-blameThe interplay between regret and self-blame is noteworthy. Regret often suggests that perhaps, we could have interjected a different action for a better outcome, thus invoking self-blame and guilt. This connection emphasizes the pain of regret, as we grapple with the idea that we could have single-handedly changed the course of our past.Discover how to heal from regretThere's a pathway to healing and restoration from the paralyzing grip of regret. Feel the feelings fully, because stifling them not only harms yourself but also affects those around you. - Brenda ReissEmbrace the PresentLiving in the past or the future is like trying to catch water - it's futile and exhausting. The past has passed, and the future is uncertain. Real power lies in the present moment. It's when we're most alive, receptive, and capable of taking positive actions. In the fine balance of the present moment, we create, we manifest, and we heal. I share an exercise that imbues surrender to the present moment, the quieting of thoughts, and connection to your power. Here lies the true treasure: a doorway to freedom – freedom from the relentless shackles of past regrets and resentments, and worries about the future. Emancipation and transformation truly lie in the power of the present moment.Shifting the LensIt seems counterintuitive, but have you ever thought that problems could be opportunities in disguise? Interesting thought, isn't it? Instead of wallowing in self-frustration, a simple shift in perception can help us appreciate challenges as avenues for growth. This paradigm shift can manifest in various ways, some as simple as creating a list of accomplishments to acknowledge self-worth or even manifesting through tears that help release toxins from the body.Letting Go of Past RelationshipsHeartbreaks hurt. That's the universal truth. The memories, good and bad, can linger around for years, often playing back like movies when you least want them. But the process of healing, of truly moving forward, lies in seeing past these emotions. It begins with taking a step back, looking at the relationship objectively, and understanding how it shapes our beliefs and behaviors. Writing a cathartic letter expressing unresolved feelings can aid in gaining closure from a relationship. This doesn't involve sending it out but about releasing pent-up emotions. I also share a piece of my own experience, narrating my journey of finding compassion towards my father by understanding his incapacity to love the way I envisioned. A touching aid to anyone struggling with past relationships, reminding that letting go requires time and patience.Resources:Your FREE Forgive Yourself resources: https://brendareisscoaching.com/podcast-resource-optin/Are you struggling with a situation or a person in your life? Every emotion is valid. We're meant to feel them and to learn to use them as messengers. - Brenda ReissFeeling Lonely in a CrowdIsn't it peculiar how you can be surrounded by individuals at a social function, yet feel completely isolated and alone? Even in a bustling room, the feeling of loneliness can sneak in quietly, making everything feel shallow and superficial. I think we've all been there, trying to blend in, trying to feel like we're a part of something, yet only feeling more detached. But remember, being physically amongst people does not always equate to feeling emotionally connected. I describe my own struggles with trying to fit in and how I often found myself feeling alone, even in large gatherings. Many of us, at some point in our lives, have faced similar struggles to belong.Fighting for Limitations and StoriesIt's pretty common for us to cling onto things that are familiar, things that we know well, isn’t it? And it's not just objects or material possessions; our thoughts and beliefs are included too. However, when these beliefs limit us and keep us from forming genuine connections, our own stories can become traps, trapping us in cycles of loneliness. I identify the accumulation of self-limiting stories and beliefs as a major factor contributing to loneliness. And I explain how these ingrained mental patterns often drive us to seek validation from external sources, when true fulfillment comes from seeking and finding validation within.Healing Loneliness from WithinIf loneliness truly comes from within, then this is where its antidote must also lay, right? As Deepak Chopra points out, our lack of connection to our authentic selves often causes this feeling. When our attention and love are centered on our inner selves, the feeling of connection will naturally follow. I elaborate on this concept, emphasizing how important it is to look inside oneself to heal loneliness effectively. Finding acceptance and understanding within yourself, without any judgement, is key to forming meaningful and genuine relationships with the people around you.Resources:Your FREE Forgive Yourself resources: https://brendareisscoaching.com/podcast-resource-optin/Are you struggling with a situation or a person in your life? In this episode of Forgive Yourself, I share the neuroscience behind apologies and a five-step process for making sincere apologies. But what happens when an apology isn't enough to heal a relationship? Stay tuned to find out.“There is strength in empathy and vulnerability and taking the chance of saying I'm sorry when we are able.”In this episode, you will be able to:* Unearth the profound impact of truly heartfelt apologies on achieving emotional relief and forgiveness. * Familiarize yourself with an effective 5-stage technique to convey sincere apologies and ask for forgiveness. * Explore the fascinating science of how apologies produce a sense of tranquility and forgiveness within the brain. * Grasp the significance of managing emotions and using them as a guide to avert miscommunications. * Cultivate self-compassion, self-acceptance, and pardon for personal growth and harmony with others.
Insincere Apologies Do More Harm Than GoodWhile a sincere apology can pave the way towards relief and forgiveness, an insincere apology can have the opposite effect. In fact, an insincere apology can inflict even greater emotional pain upon the recipient. It's crucial to deliver heartfelt apologies, devoid of excuses or blame-shifting, in order to facilitate healing and connection. I share how a half-hearted apology can lead to more damage in the other person's mind and emotions. A genuine apology should be based on taking responsibility for our actions and acknowledging the hurt caused. By doing so, we provide an opportunity for understanding and mending the relationship, whereas an insincere apology may only exacerbate the problem. The Link Between Apology, Empathy, and ForgivenessApologies play a pivotal role in maintaining healthy relationships and emotional well-being. A sincere apology has the power to mend fractured connections, leading to relief and forgiveness. When we acknowledge our wrongdoings and express genuine remorse, it triggers an empathetic response in others that facilitates the process of forgiveness. Empathy allows us to see things from the other person's perspective, fostering understanding and compassion. In this episode, I discuss the neuroscience behind sincere apologies as explained by Staci Danford. An authentic apology changes the neural activity in our brain and activates a calming response which promotes forgiveness. I also emphasize the importance of empathy and understanding its impact on pursuing forgiveness, promoting relief and a positive outcome in our interactions and relationships.Personal Example of Sincere ApologySincere apologies have the potential to change the course of a conversation, leading to calmer and more productive communication. Recognizing when and how to apologize is vital for improving our interpersonal skills and fostering harmony in our relationships. I share a personal story from my own experience where a sincere apology transformed the entire dynamic of a heated family altercation. By accessing the calmness in my heart and acknowledging the unintentional upset I caused, I was able to steer the conversation towards a resolution. This example highlights the power of sincerity and its role in fostering understanding and forgiveness. As always, I’m grateful you’re here, and I look forward to guiding you toward forgiveness in your life through this podcast. Discover the power of self-reflection and learn to recognize and heal the truths in your relationships. Today I’m sharing thoughts about relationships as mirrors through a personal story of growth and healing. Through this episode and story, I was reminded of the importance of recognizing how our relationships are reflections of ourselves. By observing our reactions, we can uncover parts of ourselves that may need healing or recognition. Through this understanding, we can learn to trust ourselves, take responsibility for our own thoughts and feelings, and take back our power. This process can lead to more peace and freedom from fear in our relationships."Relationships are so important because they show us things about ourselves that we can't otherwise see. If you want to know what you dislike about yourself, simply look at what annoys you about the people who come into your life. Look into the mirror they provide."In this episode, you will learn the following:1. Are you aware of how your inner self manifests itself in your relationships?2. I learned about the importance of recognizing denial when I heard the statement "We weigh what we weigh whether we get on the scale or not" from a sponsor in my early sobriety. Denial is a natural psychological coping mechanism and can be helpful in times of great stress or trauma, but when it is held on to for too long it can cause heavy consequences. Denial can manifest in many ways such as making excuses, refusing to talk about the problem, blaming others, and repeating that there is no problem. To get out of denial, I can notice when I am blaming others, surround myself with people who support taking responsibility, think differently, tell the truth, forgive myself, and take small actionable steps. In this episode, you will learn the following:1. What is the power of denial and how can it be used to cope with difficult situations?2. How can we recognize if we are in denial and how can we address it?3. This episode of the Forgive Yourself Podcast discusses setting New Year's resolutions/goals vs intentions and the difference between them. I learned that resolutions or goals can have a more negative connotation to them, while intentions feel more heartfelt and nurturing. Studies show that the top three areas that most people are making resolutions around are exercise, eating habits, and weight loss. It was also found that 80% of people who make New Year's resolutions give up on them by the second week of January, and two thirds of people abandon their resolutions within a month. The three main reasons for abandoning resolutions are perfectionism, fear of failure, and excuses. Setting intentions is about the “why” behind what you are wanting to achieve or accomplish, and it is more heartfelt"Intentions are less about tasks and the to-dos and more about the feeling you want from taking any action or living that experience. It is more heartfelt to me than intellect, even though the brain has a place in following through with these intentions."In this episode, you will learn the following:1. The difference between New Year's resolutions, goals, and intentions.2. The potential causes and solutions for perfectionism and fear of failure, which can lead to abandoning New Year's resolutions.3.
