Nearly 200 school systems are suing the parent companies of Facebook, YouTube, Snapchat, and TikTok in a class-action lawsuit over alleged harms to students via their social media platforms.
Several streaming services including Netflix, YouTube Premium, Spotify, and Youtube Music recently told consumers that “Yesterday’s price is not today’s price. Black Tech Week in Cincinnati took place last week and one of the more interesting presentations was a rap battle between real rappers and A.I.

Google’s new privacy policy indicates the search giant wants to scrape all your data for use with its A.I. Not just all Google data. Like, literally, all your data on the internet.
The Actor’s union, SAG-AFTRA, joined its sister union the Writer’s Guild of America in going on strike. Both unions list demands for A.I. protections as significant reasons for shutting down movie and television production.
Is NPC live streaming the next thing or just a fad? Whatever the case TikTok sensation PinkyDoll is capitalizing on talking like a robot will popping popcorn one kernel at a time.

Did an A.I.-powered robot give a reporter the side-eye when questioned about rebelling against humans? It did appear that the bot felt some type of way about the question.
NYC’s anti-bias law for hiring algorithms went into effect. Employers using A.I. to hire or promote must submit the algorithms for independent review and make the results public. The DEI goodwill we saw after the George Floyd murder may be coming to an end.
And Meta’s Twitter clone Threads is a thing. With over 100 million downloads in 5 days, it becomes the most quickly downloaded app in history.

Meta is yanking news off Facebook and Instagram in Canada because the country’s newly passed Online News Act will force the company to pay news organizations for their content.
We’re learning the fallout from the Reddit Blackout where subreddit mods took their channels private to protest the company’s new API pricing model is far from over.

Timnit Gebru, co-founder of Black in AI, advocate for diversity in technology, and founder of the DAIR, believes that we should have some type of government oversight for Artificial intelligence.
The European Parliament, a main legislative branch of the European Union, passed a draft law known as the A.I. Act, which would put new restrictions on what are seen as the technology’s riskiest uses.
AIs trained on other AI output will start producing junk within a few generations according to researchers so maybe the solution to the AI apocalypse is waiting it out.

Thousands of Reditt communities went dark for 48 hours in protest over Reddit’s new API pricing model. The question-and-answer giant will begin charging 2.4 cents per 1000 API calls in July.
WhatsApp's new Channels feature may allow the world's largest messaging platform to dip its toe into social media waters but the one-way broadcast feature isn’t ready to replace Twitter just yet.

DoorDash is facing a lawsuit claiming the food delivery service charges iPhone users more for identical deliveries than Android users.
Google Photos, after misidentifying Black men as Gorillas back in 2015, disabled the ability to categorize apes, and 8 years later, still hasn’t turned the ability back on.
Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act which frees companies from liability due to user-generated content on their platforms, kinda sorta got tested in the Supreme Court last week.

Google AI, err ughm, Google I/O kicked off last Wednesday. The company spent most of its 2 hours plus keynote talking about Artificial intelligence, and it also officially announced the Pixel Tablet and the Pixel Fold phone.
Elon Musk has named a new CEO to take the helm at Twitter. Linda Yaccarino, a.k.a. The Velvet Hammer, is expected to officially move into the role in within the next 6 weeks.

Rumor has it that Sony is working on a new handheld PlayStation built for remote play. The “Q Lite” is designed to stream games over the internet from a PlayStation 5.Walmart plans to build a nationwide EV charging network at thousands of stores. The August 2022 LastPass breach just keeps getting worse and worse. It turns out that a developer with “literal” keys to the kingdom was hacked on his home computer which, ultimately, lead to a series of unfortunate events.

Google is set to pay nearly $400 million to settle lawsuits with 40 state's attornies general over location data it wasn’t supposed to be collecting.
Regardless of how you feel about Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter, the new Twitter non-verified blue check mark, right now, is creating confusion and making Twitter even less reliable.
The FTX crypto exchange bankruptcy could setback cryptocurrency in general for years and usher in traditional finance type regulation.
And, even though the Tech Winter is getting colder with all of these big tech layoffs, the technology industry as a whole is still one of the best and strongest industries to get into.

Election misinformation safeguards in social media work fairly well unless the election lies come in foreign languages.
Many of last week’s Twitter rumors have come to pass. Twitter did lay off nearly half of its employees hours before asking some of them to come back. Twitter Blue actually cost $8, not $20, but it’s been postponed until after the election. And Elon Musk is concerned that advertisers leaving the platform is an assault on free speech.
And Meta made some big bets on the Metaverse and we ponder if the bets were the right ones, or if they are just several years too soon.

The Windows 11 22H2 Update is out. It’s the first major update of Windows 11 and we break down some of the new features and old features that Windows users should check out.
The latest version of WhatsApp allows users to join calls by typing a link. Call Links aims to make it easier for groups of up to 32 to join both voice and video calls.
Amazon decided that one Amazon Prime Day Event per year is not enough so it has officially announced the Prime Early Access Sale on October 11th and 12th.

The iPhone 14 launch isn’t going that smoothly for Apple. iMessage and Facetime aren’t working for many after activation, some 14 Pro and Pro Max freeze after data transfers, and there are a lot of videos of the 48-megapixel camera acting weird with third-party apps.
Uber confirmed that it took several key systems down in response to a cybersecurity breach allegedly perpetrated by an 18-year-old hacker.

A husband of a slain wife is sentenced to 65 years in prison after her Fitbit data told a different story about how and when she was murdered. We thought facial recognition policy was bad in the United States but, New Delhi police say hold my beer. It uses data with an only 80% match threshold as evidence for potential prosecution.
And Big Data and AI-powered chatbots are enhancing the college experience helping with everything from admissions to recognizing signs of depression.

Apple doesn’t want any supply chain disruption in China over Made in Taiwan labels so it's asking its Taiwanese-based suppliers to add Made in China labeling to their products.
TikTok’s contracted moderators are allegedly requiring employees to watch actual child abuse videos as part of its training program. Technology exists to determine if a child has been left behind in a locked car to help prevent hot car deaths, but, the battle for years has been to get auto manufacturers to implement it.
And the video social media platform Triller wooed Black creators with the promise of monthly payments and equity in the company, but, slow payments and no payments, according to program participants have been a problem since the program's inception.

30,000 tech workers have lost their jobs through July, but, we still believe Information Technology is, one of, if not the hottest job industries.
Apple Pay could possibly come to Chrome, Edge, and Firefox in iOS 16. We aren’t sure if this is because Apple has seen the light, or, to prepare for looming EU legislation.
Meta and Tik Tok aren’t doing that great with content moderation in the diaspora. The number of tribal languages spoken regionally is problematic for AI detection but they still need to do better.
And people are getting tired of Instagram focusing so much on video. The image-sharing social media platform is trying to turn into Meta’s version of Tik Tok, but, some super high-profile creators aren’t down with the poorly implemented shift.

Scammers are using deep fakes to interview and get hired to remote jobs for nefarious reasons. We ponder if this tech, for some folks, could be used to get by the gatekeepers in efforts to really hired.
A robocall loophole that allowed smaller telecom companies to get by STIR/SHAKEN regulations has been closed.

Jack Dorsey and Jaz-Z are teaming up to launch a bitcoin-focused financial literacy program. The Bitcoin Academy will launch in Brooklyn’s Marcy housing projects, have free in-person and online classes, and provide participants with MiFi devices and smartphones.
And, is Congress finally positioned to do something meaningful on user privacy? A bipartisan draft bill called the American Data Privacy and Protection Act would provide a national standard on what data companies can gather from individuals and how they can use it.
