When we look at greed it is all about building your treasure up for you. It's about worrying about your needs before others. Furthermore, it's about building your future. It's a selfish mindset and it indicates that your master is not God.
In Part 5 of Deadly Deeds, we take a look at the sin of lust and how to overcoming these natural cravings that can become so destructive.
This week of the deadly deeds series, we address the sin of pride. We have a tendency to follow an ‘I felt moment’ and begin to shift our eyes on ourselves, instead of on God. When we lose our priority of God as first, it turns into pride way too often. We combat pride with humility, in particular, valuing others.

Today in our series on The Seven Deadly sins, we try to understand why we become so angry and how God wants us to respond to these deep and sometimes uncontrollable feelings.
Sin takes a number of different forms but ultimately separates us from God. We try to replace going to God as our source of life with things that just can’t replace him. As we start a series on The Seven Deadly sins, we discuss the anatomy of sin so we can better understand it and God’s call for our response to it.
Often life’s situations leave us asking the common question - why? And even though we find assurance that God is in control, we still long for deeper answers to life’S questions. Although God doesn’t always give us the answers we desire, the Apostle Paul does give us some helps to get us through the dark times.
Often in our faith journey, we encounter detours. These are the times in our lives when nothing seems to go as planned, or we think we've gotten off-track, or our "plan A" becomes "plan B." What we learn from the scriptures in the account of Exodus 13 is that often God detours our lives to build up our faith in Him. In His faithfulness to us, he uses detours to prevent us from going backward in our faith or to keep us from becoming complacent in our faith.
What's the worst day of vacation? We'd all agree it's the last one. It's the day we have to get ready to go back to our regular lives, our routines, and our jobs. But the beauty of our spiritual journey is that this trip is one-way. Last week, we started the story with Lazarus' resurrection, and today we end it with Jesus'. But there is a distinction. Lazarus had to have his grave clothes removed for him, whereas Jesus simply passed through his. That's because Jesus was in a glorified state whereas Lazarus had simply returned back to his same body. Here is an aspect of the resurrection that is often lost at times. We are not just looking forward to a “2nd life” or an extension of this current one. No... we are looking forward to new life, which includes an entirely new existence. An existence that not only isn’t bound to the material, but that is not subject to the sickness, disease and defeat we suffer now.
"Just as we make a decision to surrender money for a vacation, the discipleship journey starts with a decision… a surrender. A decision to yield one's life to Christ. Thomas, along with the other disciples, decides he's willing to go to Jerusalem with Jesus even if it means he will lose his life for it. For many people, Christianity and faith are things they add to their life the way we add fitness or a hobby. The journey has to begin with losing one's life, though… full surrender."

When it comes to the word, there's plenty of biblical evidence that suggests that God speaks through those he has called to the office of preacher and teacher. The question for us is, do we come to church on Sunday expecting to hear the word of God? What should our attitude be? What should we be receiving?

There are those who show Jesus respect, and there are those who respond to what Jesus has done in their lives. The question for us is, "Which one are you?"
So… does prayer change things? The answer is yes, it does… but only when we do it according to the guidance of the Scriptures. Rather than praying to get what we want, we must pray that God's will be done and have faith in His plan.

Our belief that divine healing is available today is rooted in our understanding of what was accomplished within the atonement Christ provided at the cross. More than simply God being compassionate or empathetic towards our suffering, it has to do with Jesus arresting and reversing the effects of the Fall within His creation. But divine healing is a topic that has to be understood within the context of other core beliefs if the believer is to be balanced in their walk of faith. While everyone may not experience this side of heaven, it is something we hold that every believer will receive in eternity.
A timeless criticism of the church has been that it is all about money. If we’re honest, there have been enough abuses within the religious realm to warrant this belief. Hence the need for a core belief that gives the right teaching and perspective on the matter. God’s approach to our finances is the same as His approach to our time and the abilities He gifts to us. He expects good stewardship. Our wise and worshipful use of these resources is a direct reflection of whether we understand God’s mission and agenda here on this earth.
The turn of the year represents an opportunity to make commitments. Whether it’s fitness, education, career or simply better life balance people strive to renew their focus on what they deem important. But what about our faith? Should we renew our focus on our walk with God? The answer, even according to the Scriptures, is “yes!” But there are certain facets of renewal that need to be adhered to if our pursuit of the spiritual is to actually last longer than the average New Year’s resolution. There are, in fact, requirements of renewal and we focus on those in this message.
The angel’s response to Mary’s question “How?” was “the Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.” In other words, Mary was not expected to bring the Messiah into the world through natural effort and means. It would take her submission and reception of the Spirit. We have been given the same promise today. Do we hear not just the angel to Mary, but Jesus to his disciples... His Spirit is the greatest gift we have today this side of eternity. Are we living lives surrendered to Him?
The angel told Zechariah that John’s purpose will be to “make ready for the Lord a
people prepared for Him.” Christmas is a time filled with preparations. Events, gatherings,
parties, presents, productions. But key for us spiritually is to realize we share in John the
Baptist’s role. We are to be “preparing others” for Jesus’ return. Do we hear the angel’s
proclamation that there are preparations to be made? Who are we telling about Jesus? Who
has God appointed to us to help prepare for His arrival?
God has had a plan of redemption from the beginning. The gift of the Messiah is
like a person who has planned their Christmas shopping in May as opposed to the person who
is out shopping on Christmas Eve just hoping something pops up. The angel’s message to
Daniel was “there is an appointed time” and a sequence of events. That timeline, and that plan
is still proceeding today. Do we hear that? Are we “listening” to the Scriptures that our focus
has to be on the King’s 2nd coming, and not just His 1st one? How are we adjusting our life to
live in light of His 2nd Advent?

Our church on any given Sunday has people in it who feel like they are on the outside, even if they have attended for a long time. How do we reach those people and combat the enemy's lies about their identity in Christ?
There are three predominant ways that we can impact those who feel like they are on the outside: by practicing correction, by pursuing the individual feeling left out, and by practicing hospitality in the true biblical sense of the word.
In the conclusion to "The Same Faith" series, we take a look at Philippians 4 where Paul pleads with Euodia and Syntyche to agree. These women aren't problem makers, they are people who Paul says "have struggled together in the gospel," but they have hit a disagreement. Paul had a similar conflict with Peter at one point. Through their struggle we see that in ministry, there will be conflicts and differences of opinion. There will be friction. The call for us today is to find harmony and unity, finding common ground where there is not hatred or an allowance made for the entrance of the Adversary.
The Apostle Paul speaks of those in opposition as being enemies of the "cross of Christ." That core phrase sits at the center of Christianity. We only follow Christ. There is a commitment to the truth that Paul brought to the Philippian church. He says, "Whatsoever things are true [or pure]... think on these things" (Phil 4:8). For us, there are a ton of people leaving Christianity today and "deconstructing their faith." We can't do this. You can't dismantle the truth of Jesus. There needs to be a commitment to the Scriptures and not a detour from that.
Ever taken a photo of an important moment only to realize later it was out of focus? A subtle shift of the lens or shake of the camera resulted in an image focused on something entirely other than intended. The same can be true of churches today that fail to "focus" on Jesus' call towards BOTH obedience to Him as well as love towards others. Explore with us how Paul illustrates this in Philippians 2 by taken an out-of-style approach in his praise and adoration of an otherwise unknown colleague named Epaphroditus. One of the more powerful passages in the New Testament is Philippians 2:6-11 which speaks of how Christ emptied Himself of His place in divinity to come to earth. He "humbled Himself" and became like us in order to save us. Paul says "You should have the same attitude" as Christ, and he can speak, given how he gave up the status he had in Jerusalem to become an Apostle. For us today, we recognize the call of Christianity is toward selflessness. Since our culture today seeks recognition and status, having the same humility as Christ Jesus requires us to view things differently.
In a culture where values, morals and truths are rapidly changing, the church needs to anchor itself to the Scriptures more than ever. Using the text of Philippians as a frame of reference, this series will explore Paul's call for the church to ensure it has the same mind, the same truth and the same heart as the other churches that boast alignment with Christ. In this first part, we explore what it means to have the same enthusiasm for the Spirit's leading that the early church had inn spite of detours, difficulties and different avenues.
Why is it that we think nothing about spending money on restaurants, vacations and entertainment but then suddenly get skeptical when it comes to giving to the church? After all, the call to give a portion of our finances to the church is something directly supported by the Scriptures meaning that it's God's command for us to give, and not just the greediness of the local pastor. So why does God ask for our money? If He's the Creator of the universe and controls everything... what need does He have of our hard-earned money? The truth is more spiritual than sacrificial as we explore this topic in this teaching.
It's an age-old question that has regained prominence today in the church. Our culture seems completely upside-down in it's thinking and reasoning. For the church this has become dangerous given the generally accepted attitude that people who disagree with certain mindsets can be shamed and shunned as hate-filled bigots.
