In this episode, we dig deep into tachograph compliance, an area attracting increasing attention from the Office of the Traffic Commissioner. With more investigations, rising enquiries, and a growing number of tachograph-related hearings, it’s clear the focus is sharpening.

But what’s driving this spike? And why now?

We break down the familiar, but still common, compliance pitfalls, including:

  • Insufficient training, analysis, and follow-up
  • Incorrect recording of double manning
  • The risks around micro movements
  • Missing mileage (with some operators still tolerating 3–5km discrepancies)

After unpacking the tachograph landscape, we shift gears to look at handling“difficult conversations” and the people skills every transport manager needs to keep their operation moving smoothly.

We also cover the new EU Entry/Exit System (EES) — what the stricter rules mean in practice, how the changes will affect commercial vehicle movements, and what operators can do now to prepare with confidence.

When one of your staff makes a mistake, do you turn a blind eye or is it the case that you've had enough and wild horses won't stop you from disciplining them? Everyone makes mistakes, but in the transport sector a small mistake can lead to large repercussions, so proportionality is really key. This week the team discussed:

  • handling minor infringements made by staff;
  • drugs and alcohol testing;
  • transport consultants - witness or representative?
  • examining the importance of authorised fleet size v actual vehicles in the goods and passenger sector.

Any accident involving your vehicles or employees is a stressful experience and one that requires a careful and considered approach whether the accident is of a minor nature or one with catastrophic consequences. Having a plan in place before an accident occurs is critical to an effective response. Don't be left out in the cold by confusing the employment status of your drivers. Current HMRC guidance suggests that it will be ‘very rare’ that a commercial vehicle driver will be genuinely self-employed (regardless of the label given to the relationship) and Traffic Commissioners now scrutinise the arrangements operators have in place for engaging their drivers. So called ‘self-employed’ drivers are a major concern for HMRC and the Traffic Commissioners and can result in serious tax consequences as well as findings of loss of good repute. This week the team discussed:

  • self-employed drivers and the implications for operators;
  • maintenance issues and Public Inquiries; and
  • what operators need to know about certain ESG procurement requirements for entering into contracts with large companies.

  • How does maintenance link in with having an accident?
