On this episode of the podcast, Lisa and I talk about the Two Types of Pain: The Pain of Disappointment and The Pain of Discipline. Temporary discomfort from discipline is much lighter than the lasting pain of not reaching your potential due to lack of discipline.
Hebrews 12:11 says, "No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been TRAINED by it."
"We must all suffer from one of two pains: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret. The difference is discipline weighs ounces while regret weighs tons." --Jim Rohn

What do you want to be true in your life a year from now that’s not true today? This was a question a friend and mentor of mine asked me in 2022 while I was on a sabbatical from my work and contemplating what was next for Lisa and myself. I did not have a clear picture at that time and that one question helped me to get clarity on what was next. There is no doubt it will for you too.
Why is this a question everyone should ask?1. It gives you a lens through which to clarify your vision. 2. It pushes you to think ahead. 3. It places you in a position to REFLECT and ADJUST

In this episode of the podcast, Lisa and I talk about King Herod the Great and his evil decision to kill all the male children two years old and younger to answer the question, "Why talk about evil at such a precious time of the year?"
[Mat 2:1-12, 16-20 ESV] 1 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, 2 saying, "Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him." 3 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; 4 and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. 5 They told him, "In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet: 6 "'And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.'" 7 Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared. 8 And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, "Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him." 9 After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11 And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. 12 And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way. ... 16 Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, became furious, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had ascertained from the wise men. 17 Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah: 18 "A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping and loud lamentation, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be comforted, because they are no more." 19 But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, 20 saying, "Rise, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child's life are dead."

In this episode, Lisa and I start our Christmas conversations about Elizabeth and Zechariah -- John the Baptist's parents -- and how they handled the news from the angel Gabriel that they were going to have a child in their advanced years.
BIG IDEA: It can be easy to go through the motions of faith until we are faced with the impossible. Luke 1:5-25 (ESV) 5 In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, of the division of Abijah. And he had a wife from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. 6 And they were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and statutes of the Lord. 7 But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and both were advanced in years. 8 Now while he was serving as priest before God when his division was on duty, 9 according to the custom of the priesthood, he was chosen by lot to enter the temple of the Lord and burn incense. 10 And the whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the hour of incense. 11 And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense. 12 And Zechariah was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him. 13 But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. 14 And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth, 15 for he will be great before the Lord. And he must not drink wine or strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb. 16 And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God, 17 and he will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, but to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready for the Lord a people prepared.” 18 And Zechariah said to the angel, “How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years.” 19 And the angel answered him, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I was sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news. 20 And behold, you will be silent and unable to speak until the day that these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time.” 21 And the people were waiting for Zechariah, and they were wondering at his delay in the temple. 22 And when he came out, he was unable to speak to them, and they realized that he had seen a vision in the temple. And he kept making signs to them and remained mute. 23 And when his time of service was ended, he went to his home. 24 After these days his wife Elizabeth conceived, and for five months she kept herself hidden, saying, 25 “Thus the Lord has done for me in the days when he looked on me, to take away my reproach among people.”

On this week's episode, Lisa and I talk about the effects of making excuses. The bottom line is that when you make excuses... you miss out. Stop making excuses...and make progress....FIND A WAY!
Two quotes:"If you really want to do something, you'll find a way. If you don’t, you’ll find an excuse."
"You can make progress or you can make excuses...but you can’t make both."
The effects of making excuses:1. Other people become the blame because Your attitude is about self and you refuse to accept responsibility. In other words, you’re a chicken. 2. It doesn’t just limit growth. It prevents growth. 3. It perpetuates generational dysfunction. 4. You avoid hard conversations therefore, the relationship never goes anywhere. 5. It limits your capacity to handle pressure…which is a privilege. You can’t take the heat.

This week Lisa and I talk about the five marriage mindsets people have towards marriage. This is from the SYMBIS assessment tool from Les and Leslie Parrot.
We want your marriage to soar… But your attitude will determine your altitude!
In our marriage coaching, we recently started using the SYMBIS (from Les and Leslie Parrot) tool to capture a clear snapshot of the couples we work with AND give them feedback on who they will be with for Jo the remainder of their lives.
This tool assesses your attitude towards marriage, your individual & relational well-being, your contexts (social support, finances, & expectations), & your dynamics.
WHERE DID THE FIVE MINDSETS COME FROM?
The SYMBIS research team interviewed more than 3,600 young adults (18-30), an equal number of men and women, spread evenly across the ages, and unpacked the following FIVE attitudes.
Those five mindsets (or attitudes) and their MARRIAGE THEMES are:

God's Word says, “A gentle answer turns away anger, but a harsh word stirs up wrath.” In this episode, Lisa and I discuss practicing gentleness in a brutal world.
Gentleness is Kindness.
Kindness is Grace.
Grace is what saves us.
Therefore, gentleness is a fruit of the Spirit of God that is produced in Christ-followers.
A lack of gentleness comes from a spirit of pride and immaturity. On the other hand, gentleness is cultivated in the soil of struggle and fertilized in the solitude of time in God's Word.
Ask these questions to "check your pride" at the door so you can practice gentleness...

In this episode, Lisa and I talk about Embracing Failure. Our prayer for you is that your failure doesn't define you, but rather, REFINES you. Remember... God NEVER wastes a hurt. He will leverage your failure for His glory and your good. Trust Him and Watch Him!
QUOTES
“Failure is really a pile of garbage that you are either standing on or lying under.” (Dave Ramsey)
Winston Spencer Churchill famously said “Success is not final, failure is not fatal; it is the courage to continue that counts”
Thomas Edison (speaking of the light bulb) — “I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.”
What to do when you fail…
Failing sucks! Embrace the suck!
Know your value! You have value…not simply because of your success or achievements but also because of the wisdom and knowledge gained from your Failure.
Failure hurts! But don’t fear! Don’t fear…God never wastes a hurt!! Own your failure…but watch God redeem your failure and transform your life and influence. (ie Peter)

There are two questions every person should ask:* When I wake up, do I look at my phone or do I review my purpose? * What do I want to be true in my life a year from now that is not true today?
Lisa: Savor—agreeable taste or smell…to delight in
“To taste, breathe in, appreciate”
Psalm 34:8 and Matt 4:4
Spencer: Renovaré | to renew; restore | Romans 12:2 (ESV) Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
How do you live out your one word?* Create a Spotify Playlist * Read books that hones in on your word. * Share your one word with others * Create a picture with your one word and hang it where you can see it * Stay on a Bible Reading Plan

GREAT JOY
What's the Difference between HAPPINESS & JOY?
Luke 2:10 (ESV) And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.
The phrase GREAT JOY is listed 15x in ESV.
JOY BREAKS SOUND BARRIERS…
JOY TRANSCENDS RACIAL BARRIERS…
JOY OVERFLOWS IN HOPE…

ACROSTIC
PEACE is both a gift & a fruit

In this third part of the Healthy Heart, Healthy Home, Healthy Here series, Lisa and I talk about what it means to be healthy in your workspace and how the heart is the keel bulb for your lifeboat.
Leadership is a thru-hike
Most impactful message I've ever heard...besides the Gospel: “Be Patient-Be Present-Be Deliberate” / Chadd Wright / first lesson learned on the Basic Course just before we packed our packs (Oct 2021).
How did Jesus influence others?
Romans 12:9-21 is the Model for all to follow:
Romans 12:9-21 (NIV) 9 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. 11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. 12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. 13 Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. 14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. 17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. 18 If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. 19 Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord. 20 On the contrary: “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

In this episode, Lisa and I sit down with Dan Reiland, Executive Pastor at https://12stone.com/ (12Stone Church) in Lawrenceville, GA, and talk about the Five Undesirable Realities of Fear. What’s the difference between a moment of fear and having a spirit of fear? How do you assess fear? Healthy and Unhealthy Fear What are the effects of elevated and sustained levels of fear? Fear causes us to pull back Chronic Worry Creeping Cynicism Physical health
FIVE UNDESIRABLE REALITIES OF FEAR: Fear holds your mind captive. Say no to your fears! Don’t allow them to take residency in your soul. Fear diminishes hope. There’s ALWAYS hope. What can you do? Take action. Fear convinces you of the need to hide. You are exposed. A lack of authenticity causes you the inability to connect with others at a heart level.“God often gives others as part of the remedy to break through the fear but you can’t because you are not authentic with anybody.” Fear causes you to lead defensively. "You can’t win from a position of defense in leadership. You spend all your energy in protecting what you have."Fear dampens your joy. "The devil loves to insight fear. Fear suffocates the soul."Solutions: Don’t bottle up your fear. Name the fear. When you name the fear…you begin to tame the fear. You make the fear smaller when you define it…it makes you smaller when it defines you. Take action. What can you do about it? Let God handle what you can’t handle.

Pain is a privilege. Pain produces steadfastness (James 1:2-4) Pain proves you belong to God...you are a son or daughter of His (Heb 12:7-11) Pain is temporary (2 Corinthians 4:7-18)
Blaming focuses on the problem OF pain rather than on God's purpose IN the pain. When you focus on God's purpose in the pain... … your MESS becomes your MESSAGE …your SCARS become your STORIES …your WOUNDS become your WORSHIP …your TEST becomes your TESTIMONY …your GRIEF becomes your GLADNESS …your BRUISE becomes your BLESSING …your TRAUMA becomes your THANKSGIVING …your HEARTBREAK becomes your HOPE …your FAILURE becomes your VICTORY!
Pain is a privilege because of how God uses it to complete us. Embrace the pain. Embrace the despair. It is in the pain and despair where God meets us and brings us through it! Contact us at thecordof3@gmail.com Cord of 3 on IG: @cord_of_3 Spencer on IG: @sbreedlovefca Lisa on IG: @breedlovelisa

In this episode of the Cord of Three Podcast, Spencer is preaching at his good friend's (Bruce Lovin's) church... Bethesda Baptist Church in Union Point, GA. How do you SURVIVE, EVADE, RESIST and ESCAPE temptation? In Matthew 4:1-11, Jesus faces an onslaught of temptation from our common enemy...the devil... who prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. However... Jesus did not succumb to this attack. He survived, He evaded, He resisted and He escaped. HOW? Hint... To survive, evade, resist and escape temptation...there's only ONE thing you must do. JUST ONE. It's not easy... you have to "embrace the suck" of temptation without giving in. It's not easy... you have to be disciplined in your pursuit of God. It's not easy... but you can survive... you can evade... you can fight... you can escape! Just do this ONE THING... (listen for more)

But embracing the suck is an attitude that welcomes it because you know you God is using it to grow you. But when life sucks...it's easy to be distressed and feel dejected. If that's you...there's hope! In today's episode, Lisa guides the conversation with Spencer about the depression and anxiety he was diagnosed with in September of 2017. In this episode... Lisa and I are "on the road again" headed to a basketball tournament in "May-retta" (Marietta), GA, for our daughter's basketball team. Spencer did something stupid, confessed, and learned some lessons. (roll my eyes) Lisa wraps up her final week before Christmas break. We talk about coaching. Here are a few things we talk about... Is today's athlete different? Coaching the heart behind the jersey. What separates the good coaches from the not-so-good ones? What do you love about coaching? We all need coaching. EVERYBODY needs a coach! The late Howard Hendricks, Dallas Theological Seminary professor, put it this way... everyone needs to have a Paul, a Barnabas, and a Timothy. In other words, they need to have someone who mentors them, someone who is walking with them and encouraging them, and someone they are mentoring.

You are going to hear some screaming motorcycles, ambulances, and 18-wheelers buzzing by, and you may hear my HEMI rev up a bit.. it all just adds to the ambiance. We thought, what better way to launch the Cord of Three podcast with the first episode being On the Road...to a wedding. In this episode, we talk about our beginnings, our firsts, and our irks.
