Are you an academic physician who starts Monday with big plans—only to end Friday wondering where the time went? If your week keeps running you instead of the other way around, it’s time for a simple reset strategy that actually works.

In this episode of The Academic Revolution Podcast, I’m showing you how to start your week with intention—so you can lead it instead of just surviving it.

You’ll discover the 4-step reset strategy I teach my coaching clients to shift from reaction mode to purposeful progress:

  1. Make a clear plan – Block time for professional goals, personal priorities, and non-negotiable boundaries.
  2. Preview your week – Anticipate challenges so nothing blindsides you.
  3. Set your weekly intention – Anchor your energy on what excites you and visualize your Friday wins.
  4. Identify cautions & triggers – Stay ahead of distractions, emotional drama, and unexpected roadblocks.

When you lead your week with clarity, you protect your mental energy, move your most important projects forward, and finish Fridays feeling accomplished.

A colleague that got their grant rejected might be more committed to their academic success than the person who is procrastinating on their grant writing

Not getting funded or having a manuscript rejected is never fun. Never!

But lingering on it will compromise your career advancement. Not only that it will block you from fulfilling your dreams and ambitions as a physician and in life.

In this episode, we’ll discuss how you can play to win versus failing by inaction or fear of failure.

Have you ever been in a meeting with a bunch of circular discussions that led nowhere? No action was taken. No changes were made. Everyone left and we continue to do business as usual. Painful isn’t it? What a waste of everyone’s time.

The root cause of this is very simple. Lack of expectations.

People don’t know why they are invited.

There are no clear expectations.

Nobody is clear on what we are actually trying to accomplish.

In this episode, we will fix that! I will teach you how to set clear expectations from the start so your meetings are a success.

Have you ever sat in a meeting that could have been an email? You and everyone else wasted an hour of time and got nothing done?
Sadly this is a common occurrence in medical organizations and academic medical centers. According to some studies people waste about 10 hours per week in useless meetings. That is 5 days per month and 2 months per year of lost productivity! Let that sink in for a moment!
Crazy right?!
What could you do with that extra time? How much more could you and your team accomplish?
In this episode I will teach you 4 critical strategies you have to master before the meeting ever occurs. This is part 1 of a 2 part series about meetings. So make sure you subscribe to my podcast newsletter to not miss Part 2 of this series.

Do You know Your Value (s)?

In this episode, you’ll discover the key difference and how it applies to the success of your academic career and life! This topic is straight from Pillar #2 Leadership Identify from my Physician Success DNA Method.

A lot of people talk about knowing your value these days. If you truly know your value and can communicate that to your organization then you can negotiate a higher salary or support.

To some extent that is true.

However, have you ever noticed that a salary increase (if and when it happens), academic promotion, or some practical support, never really gives you long-term joy and fulfillment? Soon enough whatever extra we might get is not enough.

This is where knowing your values comes in. Values are the real driver of more fulfillment and less stress in an academic career. Knowing your values is a North Star that defines everything else.

The real question is do you know YOUR values?

Take a listen to this episode as we unpack the difference

In this episode, you’ll learn the critical importance of your thinking and how to clean up your most important asset YOUR MIND!

You might never feel you have enough of it. In contrast to money, time is finite. It’s the most precious resource you have. Considering that time is finite, how does that affect your decisions as a leader, as a physician, as a spouse, parent, or friend?

In this episode, you’ll learn how to look at time as a finite resource and to establish your relationship with time in a way that serves you and your professional and personal goals. Through this, you’ll discover the secrets to creating more time!

Do you ever feel you just don’t have enough time?

There are just so many things to do and not enough hours in the day.

Chances are that if you are an academic physician juggling multiple responsibilities and your personal life, you feel strapped for time. And you are looking for solutions. Have you ever noticed that the latest faculty development course on time management or one of the gazillion books on this topic have actually never changed how busy you are, or how much time you have?

That’s because most people look at time management from the wrong angle. Instead of managing our time (which btw you can’t!) we need to look at our relationship with time.

Once you do that you will have more of it!

In this episode, you’ll discover where a lack of time really comes from and how you can change your relationship with time, and the stories you have about “not having enough time”.

Also, If you haven’t done so already, follow the podcast so you never miss an episode.

What if you would run your academic physician career, like a business?

I used to say that “We should all learn a bit from the industry!”

I am sure there are a couple of ideas we can learn from the marketplace or the industry sector on how to run an academic career more efficiently, like a business. We would be a lot more productive.

System inefficiencies, wasted time, and money?

The good news is you can begin to change the system from within by starting with yourself.

If you are the boss of your career (hint: you actually are!) how would you do things differently?

What would you do? How would you BE? What would be the key characteristics of someone who actually manages their career like they are the boss?

How would you show up for yourself and others ?

One of the key ways to get off the hamster wheel and break the Cycle of Academic Doom is to learn how to get the right stuff done. Most people make the mistake to work from a to-do list that quite frankly never gets done. It’s a laundry list of stuff that you believe you need to do in order to be successful or feel accomplished.

This couldn’t be further from the truth. In my famous Ditch the List Bootcamp I will teach you how to break that mentality, get off the hamster wheel and get the right stuff done with more ease. You really don’t want to miss it! Academic Physicians just like you come back for this training over and over again because of the breakthroughs they have been getting.

Leadership is such a popular buzzword these days. But what does leadership actually really mean?

In medicine there is a huge misconception of what leadership means.

Most physicians fit into one of two camps when it comes to leadership.

One group that never wants to be a leader. They might feel that they don’t have the skill or talent or just don’t want “that job” because it might be a lot of work.

The second group wants to be a leader to acquire a position or title and climb the academic ladder, but quite often doesn’t really understand what leadership is. They might also not realize that there are skills that can be learned to be a more effective leader. And who is to blame? We don’t learn these skills in medical school, our training or even our faculty development courses.

In this episode we will uncover new concepts of what leadership really is and encourage you to be a leader right where you are at. Because like my mentor John Maxwell always says:Leadership is influence. Nothing more. Nothing less.

The biggest lie we have been told in academic medicine and truthfully that we have been indoctrinated with our entire medical training is a belief that keeps so many struggling academic physicians trapped.

And it is this: You've got to work harder than anyone else to get ahead.

Today I want to talk about productivity and how this concept of “I just gotta work harder” is keeping so many academic physicians on the struggling bus feeling overworked, exhausted, and trapped.

Chances are that if you are like most physicians you feel like you have to work nights and weekends just to get caught up. And everyone else is doing it, so that’s just the way things are.

In this episode, I’m going to uncover that the more you work the less productive you actually will be and the real ways to increase your academic productivity.

If you haven’t done so already, follow the podcast so you never miss an episode.

In this episode we are going to shake things up a bit and talk about TRUTH versus FACTS.

You’ll discover the difference between truth versus facts and how it is critical for every physician or scientist in academia to understand the difference. Knowing the difference is essential not just in your role as physician or researcher, but also for life in general.

Years of medical training have taught us how to think and WHAT to think. We might have adapted things as truth that are “just facts”. And as you’ll learn in this episode facts change.

Facts are only as good as our current level or knowledge AND awareness.

And much of what we believe is subject to our perceptions and interpretations.

It’s time to sharpen our thinking and become a student again and question everything. Understanding these principles will help you tremendously in your personal and professional life.

If you haven’t done so already, follow the podcast so you never miss an episode.

Have you ever considered how perfectionism is affecting your academic career and what it is actually costing you?

Perfectionism is ingrained in our culture in medicine. Perfectionism is great for the patient. After all, we want to deliver the best care. And taking a sloppy approach could cost a patient's life.

Taking a perfectionism approach is also great for a technically perfectly executed experiment or research study, but really detrimental to your academic career.

However, have you wondered what causes research projects, publications, and grant applications to stall? Perfectionism gets in the way! That’s why perfectionism is the #1 academic career killer for many physicians and scientists.

In this episode on perfection, which is from Pillar #3 (Mental Mastery) of my Physician Success DNA Method you’ll discover what perfectionism is really about.

Perfectionism is not about perfect. It’s about hiding and fear to get your work out there.

You’ll learn how perfectionism is closely connected to imposter syndrome and procrastination, and the reasons for that.

Once you listen to this episode you’ll have a new awareness of perfectionism and how to overcome it. Take a listen.

If you are like most academic physicians grants often seem to snug upon you at the last minute and you find yourself in a frenzy to meet the deadline by writing late nights and weekends. This leaves most physicians feeling stressed out, exhausted, and overwhelmed. And often we tell ourselves: I will never let that happen again. Next time I plan better.

In this episode I’m going to share 5 mistakes most Struggling Academic Physicians make when preparing for grants. This lesson is from Pillar #1 (Performance Habits) of my unique Physician Success DNA Method.

These 5 common mistakes are:

  1. Fail to plan
  2. Set urgent over important
  3. Let others take over your agenda
  4. Underestimate how long it takes
  5. Underestimate how much you can get done

You’ll discover why most people make these mistakes and what we can learn from them and what to do instead.

Take a listen.

**Most academic physicians exactly know what to do in order to create a successful career. Get published. Get funded. Get promoted. Simple isn’t it?

Yet so many Struggling Academic Physicians get stuck somewhere. Why is it that some just seem to make progress while others face procrastination, imposter syndromes, and self-doubt?

In this episode, we’ll talk about Mental Mastery, which is Pillar #3 of my unique Physician Success DNA Method.

You’ll discover why Mental Mastery is an absolute requirement for your academic success.

Let’s be real, most academic physicians know exactly what needs to get done to move their research projects forward but somehow something always seems to get in the way.

Knowledge of what to do is rarely ever the issue. Otherwise, everyone with a library card or internet access would be skinny, rich, and happy. Or in our world a well-funded investigator.

What you’ll discover in this episode is how harnessing the power of your mind and your thoughts put you back in control of your career.

**Most Struggling Academic Physicians wait for a position, a scientific achievement or an academic title to make them feel like a leader in their field. What most colleagues don’t realize is that waiting for the position or title will keep you stuck.

In this episode, we’ll talk about Leadership Identity, which is Pillar #2 of my unique Physician Success DNA Method.

You’ll discover why Leadership Identity is critical to your academic success.

So many Struggling Academic Physicians feel like they are not really naturally leaders or lack the leadership skills. Many physicians feel trapped in an academic system that is often challenging to work in. They are hoping for a promotion or climbing up the rank in the hopes things will get better on the other end, and that they will finally have more resources to help them do what they want to do so that they can finally be the leader in their field and be successful.

What you’ll discover in this episode is that this is a broken strategy and how to become a better physician leader today, so that you can do what you feel passionate about.

**As an Academic Physician, you have all heard or said this quote: “The institution doesn’t love you back!”

In this episode, we are going to take this apart and start thinking about a new way to feel valued in academic medicine.

So many Academic Physicians struggle to keep multiple balls up in the air with all the competing commitments we have. Teaching, patient care, research, and administrative responsibilities. Not to mention all the “good citizen” jobs we are supposed to participate in. That does not leave much time for family or personal life. No wonder so many academic physicians feel overwhelmed by pleasing everyone, often feeling undervalued.

In this episode, you will discover how to create an academic institution that actually loves us back. It starts NOT by waiting for your academic center to love you back but by starting to value yourself first. Once we move our attention from THEM to US we shift our focus and actually increase our productivity at the same time.

Take a listen and discover for yourself how you can move from Resignation To Revolution and start creating change in Academic Medicine.
