The first 20mins of the day is CRUCIAL Episode 62 of the Harbir Singh podcast is all about morning routines. How do you spend the first 20mins of your day? I've experimented to dozens of different techniques after reading books and following the lives of successful people including "the miracle morning" and "what successful people do before breakfast". Personally, I have found a simple routine works best for me. 1. Loud 10mins simran first thing, I use a countdown timer on my fitbit. 2. Reading, I am reading "noise" at the moment 3. A few press ups before your shower is a great way to prime the body for the day.

In episode 49 of the Harbir Singh Podcast, we have the edifying Tripat Singh Ji from Mohali Chandigarh (Punjab, India). NB: This is the first of many podcast episodes in Punjabi, with the aim of accessing more Sikh personalities from India and around the world who may not be fluent in Punjabi. If you struggle to understand Punjabi please leave a comment and I will create English captions. Tripat Singh is a truly inspirational individual, as you will hear, he started off as a high level wrestler in his youth but did not train in adult life. He was very close to his wife and after her death, turned to exercise as an outlet for his grief. His family were initially concerned for him considering his adult and his high ambitions (started off running 5k's with no training and then went on to run several full marathons). He turned towards gym exercises (calisthenics's and weights) when despite his high cardio volume he was not losing belly fat. His Instagram page is a eclectic mix of gym based exercises which inspire awe, as most people half his age cannot do the types of exercises he is doing. As well as helping himself he is helping many others and runs free exercises classes for 2 hours every morning (6 days a week) for his local community. Recently babaji helped an elderly woman rehab from a slipped disc in her neck through exercise and is an exercise zealot believing that we should start with whatever we can do and slowly build up. Babaji also has a passion for life long learning; completing a UK based personal training course, dietetics course, Ayurveda course and acupressure course whilst running a successful textiles business.

In Ep #45 we have the articulate and knowledgeable Jasmeet Singh talking on the sensitive topic of abuse in the Sikh community. Abuse in all its forms (emotional, sexual, financial, physical) exists and is documented in every community, including the Sikh community. More recently, Sikh parcharaks have been exposed online via social media and online mediums and the me too movement has helped in raising awareness within the community.
Personally, I know of people who have been abused by religious figures while they were children. These individuals haven't come forward and made the abuse public and I know only about the abuse because they are/were close friends who confided in me.
Abuse within any religious community is a contentious topic, victims are often not believed, blamed or ignored.
Abusers are often in a position of power, are respected, and will look for those they deem easy targets (estranged, financial difficulties, mental health issues). Furthermore, these 'Godmen/woman' have avid followers who idolise them and will rise up against anyone who makes any allegations against the person they idolise.
This unilateral power can make it difficult to put safeguarding measures in place from the start and potentially doesn't help the abuser either by, creating ample opportunities for abuse.
I respect Bhai Jasmeet Singh for talking about this sensitive topic and we will no doubt get a backlash from diehard fans of 'babay' 'saints'.
Objectively Bhai Sahibs' advice would protect parcharaks as well as safeguard the vulnerable...

End of Year Review | Goal Setting Wins, Tips & Tricks, Hacks #Ep39 In episode 39 of the Harbir Singh Podcast, I share my hacks, tips and tricks for goal setting and set yourself for having a great 2022. I discuss the method that has worked best for me:
Brian Tracy's goal-setting method; 1. Number a page 1-15, write goals 2022 at the top of the page, write the important areas of your life in the subheading as a prompt (i.e family, work, health, and seva). List an equal no of goals for the year under each category; remember balance is important.
The second key investment of time is into a gratitude practice. 1. Number a page 20-40 and make a list of things you are grateful for this year, in each key area. This practice develops a skill and trains an area of the brain called the RAS, to find and notice more good in our lives. The practice has been miraculous for me and has greatly improved my quality and life and relationships. It takes a little time investment and practice but the results are well worth it.
The most important part is to review what you have written in 6months to a year, you will be surprised and filled with joy. When you set an intention and write it down, great things happen and when you count all of your blessings, they multiply.
Thanks for all of your support in 2021, I wish you a great 2022.

On this week's podcast (Episode 33 of the Harbir Singh Podcast), we have the endearing Jas Kaur Sleep Coach. I have a close relative who has a newborn at home and we often discuss how hard the early stages of a child's life are, my personal belief is that the main reason it's so hard is due to sleep deprivation. It not only takes you don't get enough sleep, maybe you manage 8 hours on rare occasions, the problem is that you never get adequate restorative sleep or deep REM sleep and so you always feel exhausted. Jas is a compassionate sleep coach advising parents through the toughest part of the journey. Ep #30 of the Harbir Singh Podcast with the wonderful Gurpreet Kaur from Intuitive Knowledge. There are several research papers related to technology and mental health. For example, social media likes and comments provide a similar release of dopamine as cocaine does. The more you use social media the less happiness you will experience and the more anxiety, depression, and suicide. Regardless of the negative effects of social media, we will not stop using it, with this in mind, this conversation shed some light on how you can take steps to improve your behavior and mental health.

In episode #29 of the Harbir Singh Podcast, I have the opportunity of discussing an urgent topic with Bhai Dharmveer Singh from Edinburgh. Bhai Dharmveer Singh shares his experience of what it's like to have a heart attack, the period leading up to the event, and his health transformation journey. He is incredibly brave and honest to share such a personal experience and he is doing this for the sole, commendable purpose of helping others. Heart disease is the biggest killer of males worldwide and south Asians are in a high-risk group because of their ethnicity. We discuss this topic in-depth including smart tech and its uses in identifying heart attacks, the reluctance of men to get checked when they have symptoms, the diet that halved Bhai sahib cholesterol and helped him lose 2 stones (16kg), and how heart attacks affect everyone in our community. Get tested - blood test for cholesterol (every 2 years) and blood pressure check every month. Get insurance - It's important for us males to be responsible and get insurance if we have dependents. Be safe - if you're suffering from any of the symptoms of heart attack (list below) it's important not to show bravado or delay and get checked ASAP.
Symptoms of a heart attack:
Chest pain, fullness, or discomfort. Pain in your arm(s), back, neck, or jaw. Stomach pain. Shortness of breath, nausea, or lightheadedness. Sweating. Fatigue
I've linked to a video of another young, healthy, vegetarian/vegan, with no family history. These instances go to show that it can happen to anyone.

Raj is an avid listener of this podcast and reached out following a previous episode with Barinder "Killa B" Singh, a commonwealth kickboxing champion who has overcome drug and alcohol addiction. I've known Raj for years and he has always been an honest and genuinely nice guy, I was surprised as anyone to hear of his 20 year battle with binge drinking and equally as inspired by it, considering how fit and healthy he is now. His story is a testament to fact that people can change and how it's never too late to turn your life around. Raj is now paying it forward and helping other people transform their lives and become healthier.
Topics discussed...
🍺 How alcohol has become embedded in Sikhs - regardless of the fact that it is forbidden in the Sikh faith, theirs no escaping the fact that the majority of the Sikhs (people born into the Sikh faith) binge drink. 🍺 Risky behaviors such as fights, marriage problems, health issues, and hangovers associated with binge drinking. 🍺 How many Sikhs have formed the habit of drinking as a release from the stresses and strains of life and how it potentially robs us of the opportunity to find other healthier releases from our problems such as friendships, sport, and exercise. 🍺Escapism and how ANYONE of us of potentially 2 or 3 bad decisions away from alcohol dependency = A. Alcohol is usually easily accessible B. It's usually acceptable in mainstream Sikh families C. It's normalized behavior as it's part of most socializing events and kids grow up seeing their elders drinking. D. Alcohol is usually portrayed as positive behavior in TV and movies and this has an effect on our subconscious. E. Sikhs will likely have members of their extended family/immediate family or friends who drink and so exposure to drinking culture may be present and some people may see how others use alcohol to bury their issues (modeled behavior). 🍺 The power of sangat / the company we keep.
Personally, I witnessed violence, conflict, and other distressing incidents when I was young. I didn't want these in my life and alcohol always seemed like the culprit. I think witnessing these incidents put me off, that along with getting into training and above all, god grace saved me from suffering the same fate during my formative years.
Having worked in Southall and Slough for the last 11 years, I have met a handful of people who have been able to turn their life around and change their habits, Raj is one of these remarkable and blessed individuals.

After the popularity of Episode 20 with Bhai Harman Singh from Basics of Sikhi, I wanted to interview many more gursikhs, who have experiential knowledge of Sikhism. Bibi Manmohan Kaur (Southall) is the nan of my wife Dr Darshan Kaur. Amongst her many achievements; recovering from a heart attack and stroke, working until 80, living by herself most of her adult life (her independence), doing seva (public service) in the panj pyaray (5 spiritual sikhs), sitting for 16 hours a day in simran and being a massive positive and ongoing influence on my wife's life. What an honor to have Bhai Harman Singh (originally from Calgary 🇨🇦 Canada, currently in Pennsylvania 🇺🇸 USA) on for episode 20 of the Harbir Singh Podcast. Recording this episode was hugely inspiring for me and forced me to reflect on my own jevan and how I spend my time.
We discussed topics including How to get into Sikhi What was Jagraj Singh (Founder of Basics of Sikhi) like How Bhai sahib became a parcharak
The nuggets I took away from this podcast was to also stay in sangat (the people might change but the institution of sangat will always remain)
And
Keep headphones in and listen to kirtan or katha all the time as it's far better than listening to slander and gossip.
You can connect with bhai sahib here Instagram.com/harmansingh Facebook.com/harmansingh Twitter.com/
Bhai sahib also runs a weekly live zoom katha: Tune in LIVE on Fridays & Saturdays on Zoom (cutt.ly/nanakprakash) 6pm PST. Listen to the audio recordings of the Katha on our various platforms: https://srinanakprakash.captivate.fm

🤺 Warrior Diet: How To Lose Weight Fast Without Exercise - 10kg in 1 Month | Ep#15 Episode #15 of the Harbir Singh Podcast ® is from the archive and is the first podcast style interview I recorded. This episode is about a dietary intervention known as intermittent fasting and specifically a protocol (type) of intermittent fasting known as the warrior diet. There's a number of different protocols (types) of intermittent fasting such as the 5:2 diet (eating less calories on 2 days a week and eating normally for the other 5 - made popular by the BBC documentary by Dr Michael Mosley) and 16:8, eating within an 8 hour window in the day and water fasting for the other 16 hours. The Warrior Diet is an intermittent fasting protocol developed by health and fitness author Ori Hofmekler. The diet is essentially an extended period of fasting followed by a short period of feasting. Hofmekler created the Warrior Diet in 2001 after years of observing himself and his colleagues in the Israeli Special Forces. Fasting is not a new concept. Perhaps the earliest records of fasting date back to ancient Greece, when philosophers touted the virtues of fasting. Hippocrates and other prominent healers were also advocates of fasting.
Today, fasting, better known as intermittent fasting, has become a popular practice in the wellness world due to positive results from dozens of indepe weight loss studies.
Babban Singh shares his own personal experience and remarkable results. Babban starts with explaining why he lost weight without exercise (he had a back injury and physically couldn't exercise), he discusses his motivation (again due to his back but it's also useful if you're preparing for your wedding!). Lastly he discusses the ins and outs of how to do intermittent fasting properly, how long you have to do it for and how to deal with hunger when fasting.
