In today's episode, Nia Thomas is joined by special guest Alison Reynolds to dive into the fascinating world of data-driven decision-making, the importance of self-awareness in leadership, and the complexities of personality profiling tools like Myers Briggs. As they explore these topics, they'll discuss the role of organisation development (OD) in creating holistic approaches to talent management, the changing landscape of work-life balance, and the power of cognitive diversity in solving today's complex problems. Get ready for thought-provoking insights and captivating conversations that will leave you inspired to embrace your own self-awareness and unlock your full potential.
Alison has a diverse background in HR, with extensive experience in the field before transitioning into freelance work. Surprisingly, she was never a big fan of psychometrics, especially personality-based ones, particularly when it came to using them for recruitment purposes. Alison firmly believes that individuals have the ability to adapt their behavior, and that self-awareness is key to personal growth and effectiveness. As an HR director, she preferred using the well-established Myers Briggs tool for leadership development, as it was not licensed for recruitment and aligned with her belief system. Given her familiarity with Myers Briggs from her past role, it was a natural choice for Alison to pursue certification in it when she started freelancing.

On this episode of The Knowing Self Knowing Others Podcast, our host Nia Thomas is joined by the esteemed guest, Dan Pontefract. Dan is a renowned author and speaker with extensive experience in corporate culture change and leadership development. In their conversation, they delve into important topics such as leadership habits and behaviours, the significance of agency and self-awareness, and the concept of work-life balance. Dan shares insights from his recently finished book, "Lead Care Win," which explores leadership habits and behaviours. He emphasises the importance of self-awareness for both leaders and non-leaders alike, and how it is intertwined with the twelve work-life factors mentioned in his upcoming book, "Work Life Bloom."
The key takeaway is that leaders need to reflect on their own self-awareness and consider the needs of the people they lead. Self-actualisation is highlighted as the starting point for leaders in each work and life factor. Trust is another crucial aspect discussed in the episode. Dan breaks down trust into three key pillars: authenticity, consistency, and advocacy. Building trust requires leaders to demonstrate these qualities, including vulnerability, staying within a certain range of behaviour, and advocating for team members even when they are not present.
The conversation also touches on the importance of empathy in leadership, exemplified by cognitive, emotional, and sympathetic empathy.. Dan's work on "Work Life Bloom" is highlighted. The goal of work-life bloom is to achieve a balance where both work and life factors are positive, resulting in feeling "blooming" in both domains.

I'm both fascinated and terrified by the pace of exponential change and VUCA. Disruption, innovation, creativity, and disruptive transformation inspires me. I'm excited how the convergence of ideas, humans, and technology might improve the quality of life for all, advancing education, reducing poverty, protecting our planet and ...the list goes on. But the accelerating pace of technology also terrifies me, specifically when it comes to the growing knowledge gap, shifts in power, and widespread naivete of the masses.

Sophie tells her story…….
“As my personal story will attest, I know the “stickiness” of doing a job that doesn’t truly fulfil you and the impact it has had not only my life, but that of my family and friends too.
At the age of 32, I quit my job as a HR Director in London – which gave me a lot of stickiness – high salary, stability, and status – all things that I had been working hard for all my career. I also had a young daughter to raise and a mortgage and bills to pay.
And I was miserable… unfulfilled, stressed, anxiety ridden, working long hours, 4 hour commutes a day, no social life, lack of family time and stressed out. Eventually, these feelings overruled the stickiness and I could not deny my true feelings. I craved FREEDOM!! I wanted to have complete control over my day, I wanted to be my own boss, and HAD to break free of the confines of an office. When I could see the world carrying out life outside the office windows – what was I missing out on?!
So I quit. With nothing but my drive, passion, goals to make my dream of being my boss a reality, and my desire to shift my life to a space that was dramatically different from the unfulfilling job that I currently held.
Eight months after quitting, I found myself standing on the TEDxFolkestone stage, delivering a talk about an idea that I am so truly passionate about, with 7 clients under my belt, a whole new network and community of friends and clients who truly inspire me, and I felt like I was making a real valid contribution to the world. I have found my freedom, I’m acting on my passion, and I’m living my purpose.
Now a further two years on, with significant business success, health, happiness and an abundance of new knowledge and focus, I am here to help you discover what your freedom, passion and purpose is – in whatever shape or form that may take – to become the best version of yourself you can be, and to live your best life.”

Matt Phelan is Co-Founder & Co-CEO of The Happiness Index He's focused on sharing the vision of Freedom To Be Human with a global audience.
Matt is happiest when spending time with loved ones, particularly anything that is outdoors in nature.
What does Matt say about himself on Seedrs?
I started my first business, a marketing agency, in 2008 right before the last big financial crisis. Although I can’t recommend starting a business when the world is in melt-down, we certainly had to learn a lot of lessons very quickly at the time!
My first business was actually integral to building The Happiness Index. Not only did the idea come from one of our customers (who is now our Chief Marketing Officer), but our CTO at the time built V1 of our product. It was initially an in-house solution we used! Quickly our customers started asking to use it too, and now we provide a platform that’s used by thousands of people across over 100 countries.
What is The Happiness Index (from Seedrs)?
In a nutshell, we provide a SaaS platform that helps HR and People professionals measure their team’s happiness and engagement. Traditionally, emotions are left out of the workplace, but neuroscience shows us that we need to unite both the head and the heart. By understanding how employees are thinking and feeling, businesses will thrive.
Matt is the author of Freedom To Be Happy: The Business Case for Happiness.
Matt also did a TED talk in 2022. Here's a link to Matt's TEDx Brighton talk

Better leadership means happier teams, and better output. Gunther ventured into IT and software development after graduating as Engineer in Electronics in 1992. His Agile adventures started with eXtreme Programming and Scrum in 2003. It was the start of seven years of dedication; years in which Gunther gained experience with Scrum with various teams in various organizations and diverse domains. Upon this foundation, Gunther became the inspiring force behind some large-scale enterprise transformations in 2010. In 2011 he became a Professional Scrum Trainer for Scrum.org.

Gunther created the acclaimed book Scrum – A Pocket Guide in 2013, with a second edition published in 2019 and a third edition in 2021. Ken Schwaber recommends it as “the best description of Scrum available”. In 2020 Gunther published 97 Things Every Scrum Practitioner Should Know; a collection of essays from field experts across the world. Several translations of his work are available.
When not travelling for Scrum and humanizing the workplace, Gunther lives and works in Antwerp (Belgium).
