Ask a Better Question: Recent Episodes

Jennifer Daily Gress

No matter where we look, asking better questions is the key to opening up new thinking, possibility, understanding and most importantly.....generating different ACTION! Want different results? Let's look close by- our thinking. Especially in the face of work, life or global challenges; let's use the principles of mindfulness to.....ask better questions and from there make positive change.

It's been more than a few minutes, and a lot has happened!

The climbing trip was amazing, and no I haven't even attempted climbing since, but that is no reflection on how great the experience was. I think it served other purposes actually...

Some reflections on joy.... experiencing it, appreciating it, and maybe even seeking it out.

Plus- a new yoga studio! Kali Yoga!

Wow, this sounds like a fun title, right?

I have a lot of thoughts about this. Alcohol is sold as the answer to pretty much everything: the way to have fun, be cool, connect with others, and conversely, also how to deal with sadness, disappointment etc. So, what does this look like when serious grief shows up? I'm sharing my experiences with this, and also highly aware that I do not want to be preachy on this subject. We all have to get through and manage in the best way we can.

I sincerely dislike 'Top 5' style episodes, but here we are. These are my best ideas for grievers and their supporters. I hope it is helpful, and please feel free to share further thoughts and ideas.

If you are looking for grief support, a group of people who have gone through similar loss can be incredibly helpful. There is no shortage of groups you can find online- and some offer in person components too. My only suggestion is to keep trying to find your people- once you find them, it is worth it. Here are the ones that worked best for me.

Experience Camp for grieving kids through 12th grade. Cannot recommend this camp enough. (They also offer an adult program and family program.)

If a tree falls in the forest, and no one hears it- does it make a sound? I like existential questions of philosophy, and this one resonates on a couple levels for me.

Also, there is a LOT of emphasis on the first year after losing someone, but what happens on day 366?

I’m sharing a few thoughts about why this question is so difficult when in the midst of grief, or really any challenging life stage. Also, I am a chronic over-thinker, so that doesn’t help in this scenario.

I also share the Buddhist parable , 'The story of the second arrow'. The message of this story is one that I revisit very frequently. It illustrates the difference between pain and suffering, which for me has been a helpful distinction in many moments.

Flashback to…… International Women’s Day, March 8, 2020.

My friend and co-conspirator Judy @garagefitness and I dreamt of sharing The Class by Taryn Toomey live in Buffalo to honor and celebrate women. Thanks to generous support from @lululemon, it actually happened! We were blessed to have the inspiring and powerful @emilychristinemara travel to Buffalo from NYC and lead hundreds of women in an amazing group experience……..one week before the world shut down.

It’s now been 2 years since I took what I thought was a break for a few weeks. I considered starting again so many times, but it felt too overwhelming. I wasn’t sure how to begin and what to say.

Somehow, a few weeks ago I felt like starting, and so I recorded a 15 min. ‘ice breaker’. Trust me, it’s messy. But, guess what- that’s exactly where I’m at. I usually obsess over details and trying to make everything perfect, but I’m experimenting with going the other way here. I ramble, probably don’t make sense and likely contradict myself, but I think that is more real than any kind of perfectly scripted talk. Ultimately, I think there is some value in sharing messiness. It’s always connected with me when others shared their real story. And, I can’t just begin again here without acknowledging the loss and grief I’ve been going through in the past 20 months.

So, if you are interested in listening, here it is.

Today's conversation might just change everything you thought about accounting and accountants....

It was a pleasure to talk with Dawn Scott, CPA about being a disrupter in the professional services field and how she has created her firm with her own rules. Hearing how she interacts with her clients and cares about their business is a breath of fresh air in a field which isn't always known for personality and connection. Dawn is also the host of the podcast 'The Empowered CPA' where I was a guest several episodes ago.

We talk about Dawn's unique approach to how she works with her clients and that being a female in this industry doesn't have to mean changing anything about yourself in order to succeed.

Ashley Middleton has been a corporate diversity facilitator since 2014 and she also has a great podcast entitled 'Figuring it Out'.  She recently released an episode called 'Being Black in America' and we unpack more of the ideas she shares. Ashley and I also crossover in the wellness fields and tie this all into our understanding and practices of mindfulness.

It goes without saying that racism and all its manifestations are very complex. Speaking for myself, I know this is a journey that I'm relatively new at- so I know I'm not getting everything right. I'm learning along the way and doing my best to share what I'm learning. Fortunately, I have some great people in my life like Ashley who are willing to share their time and energy to have these conversations.

If you are curious about the dynamics of power, influence, getting what you want and being a better negotiator- do not miss this conversation with Professor Alison Fragale, Ph.D.  Alison.  Alison is an expert in these areas and presents it all with expertise and humor.

We discuss our origin story of growing up in Pittsburgh,  the differences between women and men when it comes to negotiations and some fascinating insights into power and power dynamics.

As someone who does not feel like negotiating is a strength,  I'm encouraged that she describes it as a skill that can be learned!

I especially was intrigued by her answers about power dynamics and short vs. long term consequences for how people act when in positions of power.

Alison will be releasing a book in 2024 and in the meantime you can find her at:

A festive holiday conversation with my sister Colleen Simonds before my holiday break….

Tree flocking…..what is it and why do it? Are you a supporter or consider it holiday sacrilege?

Where do we come down on holiday folklore? Santa, Elf on the Shelf…..why not include the Easter Bunny and The Tooth Fairy too?

‘Loves Entertaining’ Is this something to aspire to or a recipe for anxiety? (do people really need food bat this things, or could we leave that part out?)

Do structured activities make for more fun?

Colleen’s holiday message for people begins with ‘This might sound bleak……’ :)

Eat red & green M&Ms in your PJs on the couch late at night (snuggling with a baby if you have one nearby).

Happy Holidays to all!

Thank you Dr. Bethany Lema for taking on what is a personal and sometimes scary subject for so many people (myself included)....hair loss. UGH. I share my own struggles and approach to dealing with this and I'm so grateful to Bethany for sharing the medical science behind all of this. As you'll hear, this is not an easy situation to diagnose and treat- but hopefully you'll come away armed with more knowledge and some possibilities if you're dealing with hair loss too.

Bethany also discusses her experience of the relationship between stress and dermatological issues. (spoiler....might there be a mindfulness link here too?)

We also talk about other top derm. questions for women especially such as anti aging treatments and products, sun protection and what are the best drug store brands to use?

Lisa Prefontaine is a licensed mental health counselor and shares so much important information in this conversation. I've been wanting to talk to a professional about this subject for a while after seeing one news article after another about how alcohol use and dependency among women is increasing, especially since the pandemic. Let me say that her approach is a wonderful combination of science, research, experience and compassion.

We talk about habits, will power, physiology, cultural pressure, marketing, and she offers some self reflective questions to consider when we're curious about our relationship with alcohol. This is a complex issue and she reflects that nuance in all that she shares. If you're interested in connecting with Lisa or working with her, you can find her here: https://www.lisa-prefontaine.com/

She also speaks to the mind and body connection around substance use and healing.

A few of the questions she shares- with kindness.
- What is my intention with this drink?
-Is this the healthiest way for me to cope?
-Where does alcohol fit into the person I want to be?

It was a privilege to hear directly from WNY Women’s Foundation CEO Sheri Scavone about the state of child care in our region and her work in that area to support women and families.

I learned so much from this conversation and came away with seeing it as a two-fold challenge. On one side, there is a need for economic resources to increase availability, access and affordability of child care. Additionally, child (and all) care workers need to be paid a fair wage that reflects how important this work is. That piece leads me to the other challenge which I see as a changing of hearts and minds. The reality is that care giving still has a way to go in the US as far as being seen and invested in as critical economic and societal infrastructure- though post pandemic it is more obvious than ever before. Asking Sheri why this work isn’t valued more highly, she links it back to sexism and racism.

The good news is that there is evidence of progress and there are supporters in Erie county working hard on this issue.

Sheri has both the data and the experience to speak to all of this and I hope that you’ll listen to the episode and then stay connected to the latest work in our community and state to support child care and families. Maybe even advocate for child care solutions yourself at your place of work? See the link below to connect with and support the WNY Women's Foundation.

This episode with Buffalo writer and workshop facilitator Nanette D. Massey jumps right into the conversations we do and don't have about race.

Next Saturday Nov 5th, Nanette and renowned author Robin DiAngelo (White Fragility) will co-host an event at Canisius College entitle 'Real Talk About Race'. We talk about the event, the nature of Robin's work in this space and the importance of walking away..... uncomfortably. Just like in the gym or at yoga class, we know that physical discomfort in training is necessary to build strength and grow. Same here.

Nov 5th Event Registration here:
https://www.eventbrite.com/e/real-talk-about-race-robin-diangelo-and-nanette-d-massey-registration-416799216677?aff=ebdssbcitybrowse

Nanette shares a lot of food for thought in this episode and it may produce some discomfort, which I think means that we're having a real conversation. A few of the things I'm thinking more about that she shared are....

"It's not about White people as individuals, it's about the system as it's set up."

"Everyone has a role to play"

"We're not talking about 'issues' we're talking about humanity and people."

I also respect and feel her conviction in what she is up to:
"I am up to no less than moving the needle for racism in Buffalo and in the world."

I love a good summary! It just feels so.....complete.

Just  me today for this summary and wrap-up episode of the first series.

Mindfulness in the Corporate World.....what are some of the best questions to come out of these conversations?

PS- I feel I have to add this: I bring up Donald Trump in an example about bias towards women seeking leadership positions and I need to say that I acknowledge there are a multitude of serious issues associated with him which I do not cover in this podcast!  For the purposes of this example, I picked one siloed micro point.

I'll be taking a couple weeks off from the podcast and then returning with another series....see you then!

Fun conversation with my friend Steve Procknal! A semi-official ambassador for Buffalo, I can't think of anyone who loves this community more. He gives back through his natural enthusiasm and creativity whether it is organizing memorable large scale events at the Bills Stadium or showing up in costume to cheer on the Shamrock Run.

Today we talk about what it takes to create community and Steve has some great experience in this area, co-founding the free fitness November Project here in Buffalo over 5 years ago. It's still going on every Wednesday morning (no cost) at 6:10 am at Hoyt Lake, 52 weeks a year!
Personally, I've gained so much from participating which I initially only did to be polite to Steve . As it turns out, I ended up meeting new and wonderful people AND running two half marathons. November Project is a special thing and I highly recommend checking it out. As they saw- come as you are....just show up.

https://november-project.com/buffalo-ny/

A few key questions we discuss.....
What is the responsibility of leaders to create community?
What are the obstacles to creating community?
How can we contribute to the communities we are a part of?

Also- Endurance Events! Namely Badwater 135
Known as 'The World's Toughest Foot Race' 135 mile run in Death Valley,
Steve has crewed for this race not once but twice! What are the lessons we can learn and apply about community that is created at endurance events? What qualities do these events bring out in those who participate, support and spectate?

DEI: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. This episode is about that, but really so much more. As you may have concluded by now, I'm a believer in mindfulness as a way to transform our thinking. And why? Ultimately, because I think that we'll have a better world for doing so.

A kinder, more dynamic and interesting world if we all have the ability to bring and be our full, best selves.

Part 2 with Steve Bell!

We didn't quite complete this conversation after one round, so we come back for more.
A few highlights from my notes.....

-Leadership and what is the responsibility of people with platforms and us as individuals ?
- To establish trust through communicating.

  • Communication doesn't have to be grandiose or institutional- it is also powerful 1:1.

  • Taking responsibility for what goes wrong. It's easy for leaders to take responsibility for wins and what goes right.

  • How do companies decide to respond to social issues? (or not)  What is the Edelman Index?

  • How do a company's principles factor into this equation?

-**Listening: 'We don't come by it naturally, we have to learn it. Listening conveys respect, interest and trust."

-**Power of truth vs. Power of propaganda
-Wanting to believe something provides the fertile ground for propagandists.

Who better to speak with about mindfulness as it relates to communicating than Steve Bell?

His professional career is all about communicating, whether in journalism with the Buffalo News, marketing and PR at Mower or as an independent voice to shepherd clients through a crisis situation.

Beyond that, Steve is a good friend, engaged citizen in Buffalo and a fighter for civil rights. I value his opinion and perspective always and appreciate his measured demeanor and wisdom. (Especially over the past few years.)

A few of my favorite questions  from our conversation are....
- What is more important, the message or the messenger?

  • What is the role of silence in communication?

  • How do we achieve the intersection between the self interest of an organization and an individual's self interest?

Who are some great communicators to learn from?
- Simon Sinek   https://www.ted.com/talks/simon_sinek_how_great_leaders_inspire_action?language=en

  • Seth Godin https://seths.blog/

  • Dr. Ibram X Kendi  https://www.ted.com/speakers/ibram_kendi

Most of us have probably heard that mindfulness is helpful for stress management. And it is- but what can mindfulness look like beyond just stress management? Could it be a key to transformational thinking and positive change? I think so!

In this introductory episode I share my 2-step hypothesis  about how mindfulness practices can reveal different thinking. And a big part of that is asking better questions. (Although my nature is to prefer answers over questions.)
